Covers the basics about Surtsey.......2003-01-14
This book was aimed to be read by a younger audience (kids ages 7-14). It covers information about formation of the island and the colonization of the island in a simple written manner. I also like the way it divides the book into 11 chapters and adds something about the poetic Edda at the start of each chapter to relay how mythology interplays with realistic events like the formation of such an island. But as an adult reader, I still had more questions after I finished the book.
The book does not go in depth about the geological nature of the island. Yes, the island was formed from a volcanic eruption, but what is the nature and quality of the land? Will it be settled by Man as it has been by birds and plant-life? What is the future of such an island? (The book implies at the end that it will be destroyed, but does not tell the reader the specifics of how/when/why). I was looking to answer such questions more in depth about this new island.
The stength of this book lies in its remarkable pictures. If only you could get some of these astonishing pictures as a poster and hang them up on your walls...You would stare at them in awe for hours!
As far as buying it...it would be worth your money if you have kids who like volcanos or like to read because they would be able to appreciate it more. If not, it would be worth getting it to read at a public library or a used book. I would not spend too much money obtaining it.

Customer Reviews:
Out of date - misleading information (2001 version).......2004-09-19
While this travel guide is quite valueable for some content, it is sufficiently out of date as to be questionable for many items. My wife and I just returned from Paris. We used this guide successfully for some items, but the version we have --- 2001 --- has misleading information about musuem times. We actually got kicked out of our tour of the Louvre (and did not get to see the Mona Lisa) because the tour book said that the Louvre was open late on Mondays and Wednesays - NOT TRUE anymore.
If you use this book, verify the information BEFORE you make your plans (sort of makes the book worthless in this sense as a trip builder).
The Hidden Treasures of Paris.......2000-12-19
Well, maybe not quite hidden, but for the first time visitors, it meant a lot to read about high points of interest. The humorous and sometimes irreverent tone of the Tripbuilder was appealing, and certainly more personal.
Perhaps the best advice was the tidbit about spending time at the top of the Samaritaine department store next to the Louvre. For the price of a glass of wine or capuccino, we marveled at the incredible panoramic view of the heart of Paris.
The book itself was extremely handy and fit perfectly in a jacket pocket or even a small purse. It was easy to use because points of interest were color-coded (even noted what would be interesting to children) and numbered for those who braved walking around this beautiful city. The more adventurous would surely find the quick reference guide to public transportation helpful.
Can't think of a better guide to take on a first-tour trip than the Tripbuilder. As we cover more cities, the Tripbuilder series is all the information we need.
This was the only quick-reference guide I needed.......2000-05-22
I'm truly hooked on the Tripbuilder books for travel. The color-coded and numbered keys to areas of interest, the map of the city, and the guide to the metro, as well as various tips on things to see and do all contribute to an amazing experience. Paris doesn't need to be "sold" as a tourist destination, but this book contributes so much to giving the visitor a better appreciation of what the city offers (as if that's possible!).
The historical annotations provided the much-needed perspective on the significance of everything we were seeing.
I especially liked the occasional bursts of humor that had me guffawing, and that added to the whole experience. Thanks for including the tip on going to the rooftop of the Samarataine for a panoramic view of Paris. We did just that, and enjoyed ourselves so much we stayed for two hours --- and all it cost was a glass of wine and capuccino.
Best travel guide that I found........1999-03-22
We took this travel guide to Paris and it was the best one out of a handful of more expensive guides we took along. It contains names, descriptions and interesting facts of all the tourist places; tells you how to get there, and how much it costs. It has a handy color-coded metro map on the back cover as well as a fold-out street map at the center fold. All this in a small, purse-fitting size. It's the only travel guide you'll need to see all of Paris, and makes a great souvenir after you get home.

Customer Reviews:
Book #9 in the Making Out Series.......2002-03-24
It's Thanksgiving vacation on Chatham Island, Maine, time for families to come together and be thankful for their everyday blessings--well, in theory. Except this holiday, the Passmore and Geiger families will be tested on how strong their bonds are when they welcome a new sibling, a possible new boyfriend, and a father's new girlfriend to the table. Yes, let the drama begin. ;)
On the Passmore's side, Zoey's father invites his 19-year-old love child (Lara McAvoy) to dinner--and doesn't tell his wife or two kids she's coming until that day. When Lara does arrive (this is Zoey's first time meeting her), her parents ask her to move in for the time being since she's nearly homeless. Zoey is definitely against her parents' decision. From what she assessed of her new half-sister, Lara is a complete loser, mentally dulled by drugs and alcohol and a strong magnet for scuzzy men like her last convict boyfriend. However, there is one person who is absolutely thrilled about Lara's move: Jake McRoyan, Zoey's ex-boyfriend and possibly Lara's new boyfriend. (Has anyone else noticed how "incestuous" relationships are on this island? I guess there are so many boyfriends/girlfriends you can go through before you start dating each other's siblings.)
Meanwhile, Claire and Nina Geiger get to meet their father's new girlfriend (Sarah Mendel)--and her gorgeous 17-year-old son, Aaron. Needless to say, both girls are utterly transfixed by him (along with just about every other girl on the island), but Claire is more so than Nina, since Nina already has a terrific boyfriend (Benjamin Passmore). After that dinner, Claire is bound and determined to get Aaron, even though he's obviously not very interested in her but, instead, attracted to Zoey, although she, too, has a boyfriend (Lucas Cabral), who's a total slug next to Aaron. My guess: the slug eventually gets the boot--and good riddance!
"Zoey Plays Games" is the ninth book in the Making Out series. If you like teen drama/romance, then I highly recommend this series. It's not too cheesy for readers who aren't particularly prone to read such books either; in fact, this series is quite witty and humorous. And if you like Zoey's character, then don't miss any of the other Zoey-oriented books: Zoey Fools Around (#1), What Zoey Saw (#6), Don't Tell Zoey (#13), Zoey Speaks Out (#18), Always Loving Zoey (#22), Now Zoey's Alone (#24), Zoey's Broken Heart (#26), and Zoey Comes Home (#28).
Zoey 's naive.......2002-02-08
In book 8,I felt that Zoey forgave Lucas a bit too quickly. I understand her confusion at seeing her parents together after all that confusion errupted on book 6. However, she is naive to think that she could just forgive and not deal with the issues.
I am not just talking about Lucas and Claire making out. I am referring to feeling so pressured to have sex. In her mind she may have just figured that it was a guy thing and that is how boys are. She has truly found someone that is her equal. I give two thumbs up for Aaron and Zoey.
Quietly I give two thumbs up for Jake and Lara. I think they can best understand each other and no one else can. I like how Jake denied that beer, even thought he was craving it. That took real courage.
Claire deserves to be by herself. The thing about Claire is that she knows that she doesn't have to be manipulative and underhanded to get what she wants, she just chooses to. Which in itself is bad, because the only thing she will have to look forward to is alone in antartica.
please katherine write a number 29!you're books are so great.......2000-04-25
when i picked no#12 in my local libray i was sooo happy that fate drove me to it, cos since then i have made sure ive read all 28 of them but the thing i still{begging KA to write no#29up to a 1000} want more. if you dont go out much please pick this up,you don't know what you're missing. i have read all her books from making out, ocean city, making waves to animorphs.i love her work keep it up. making out deserves a million stars not just five.if their is a book lover like me thank God.
I thought it was great just like the rest of them!.......1999-08-18
I think Katherine Applegate really made this book to the teenage level and our dialog. I really thought that maybe she was a teenage writer because she displayed the feelings of her characters so well!
TWO THUMBS UP!!! this book rules.......1999-05-04
Zoey and Lucas(not to mention her parents) kissed and made up. But Aaron Mendel, the son of Claire and Ninas' father's girlfriend, comes to Chatham Island. Zoey and Claire both fall for his nice guy act. He threatens Zoey and Lucas' relationship. Jake starts to fall for Lara, with mixed results. Christopher may make a life-changing decision. Nina thinks that Benjamin is cheating on her(with Aisha, of all people). Benjamin may also make a life-changing decision. This book rocks! That's all I can say, except READ IT. Next- Nina Shapes Up.

Thirty Years that Shook Physics: The Story of Quantum Theory
ASIN: 0521093554 |
Book Description
Mr Tompkins has become known and loved by many thousands of readers (since his first appearance over fifty years ago) as the bank clerk whose fantastic dreams and adventures lead him into a world inside the atom. George Gamow’s classic provides a delightful explanation of the central concepts in modern physics, from atomic structure to relativity, and quantum theory to fusion and fission. Roger Penrose’s new foreword introduces Mr Tompkins to a new generation of readers, and reviews his adventures in the light of current developments in physics today.
Customer Reviews:
Challenging, enlightening, enjoyable.......2005-11-21
I am nothing more than a humble interested amateur and my formal science education is limited to some advanced classes for my high school diploma many years ago. I picked up "Mr Tompkins" following a conversation with a physicist sitting next to me on a long flight. I found it to be an excellent introduction to modern physics in general and quantum mechanics in particular. I found it challenging and I wouldn't claim I understood every last detail, but it is definitely not necessary to have a profound knowledge of mathematical and physical concepts to read this book. The writing is witty, precise and thoroughly enjoyable. In fact I was so intrigued that I went and picked up two other books (Alice in Quantumland and Taking the Quantum Leap), both of which I found harder to read and not as suitable for the uninitiated as Mr Tompkins.
Mr. Tompkins in Paperback.......2005-10-05
It was a great transaction, Good prices, Great quality, and FAst delivery
Fun with physics, Gamow style........2005-07-14
Here are Gamow's two 1940's Mr Tompkins books popularizing modern physics, in one tidy package. An earlier reviewer has suggested that this book be produced as an animated educational film, a good idea, but I picture it as being more of a computer enhanced live action video. The chapters on relativistic geometries and cosmological models could really be audio-visual treats, and it's hard to imagine a better basis for a script explaining the strange new world of physics to the interested lay public. The lions-share of what science now claims to know about the world was developed from a seemingly strange handful of theories thrashed out in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Gamow was both a party to this theoretical explosion and a gifted writer. Most of what has occurred in physics since these books were first published, has essentially been the refining of the ideas discussed here, so, for the most part, the science is still significant. But while Gamow had some important cosmological ideas -- he predicted the cosmic microwave background radiation, the discovery of which earned Wilson and Penzias a Noble Prize (in which Gamow should have shared, but did not) -- he also bet on the wrong horse when it came to cosmological models.
Gamow cleverly and artfully presents the three basic cosmological models being argued from the 1930s through 1965.* The context is a night at the opera in which noted physicists sing the virtues of their respective theoretical opinions. First up is no other than the initial developer of the expanding universe ('big bang') model, the Belgian physicist and cleric, A. George Lemaitre. The Lemaitre universe is a majestically wondrous, one-off, elegant masterpiece. He sings, "Z' splendeur of z' origine. . . Worrk of Z' Lorrd!" Second is the oscillating or 'bouncing' model, and this piece is sung by Gamow, who at that time favored the concept of an eternally recycling universe (bang, expand, contract, re-bang, expand, contract, ->, etc). The third and last piece to be sung is of the Bondi-Gold self-maintaining or "steady state" universe, so famously preferred by Hoyle. Appropriately, this singer is generated mysteriously from intergalactic space, singing "Was never formed in time gone by. . . But is, has been. . .shall ever be. . ."
Well, on this question we seem to have a winner, and no, it isn't Gamow's model. As Roger Penrose relates in the foreword, Gamow's bouncing universe and Hoyle's "steady state" model are both dead ducks these days. Seventy-five years of observation and mathematical fine-tuning have made something like Lemaitre's general understanding look like the only serious cosmological game in town. But don't hold that against this artful and thoroughly fun book. Gamow discounted the 'steady state', and most of the science here is still sound and relevant.
*[File this under 'is there nothing new under the sun?': 1600 years ago, Augustine of Hippo recorded (City of God, Book XII) that classical cosmographies all distil into three basic models, the same three considered here by Gamow. (These same three models subsume the "innumerable universes" of Epicurus' speculation and of the recently famous so-called 'strong anthropic principle'.) Augustine bet on the right horse though, reasoning that the 'cycling' and 'eternal' models both seek finally to avoid rather than admit a true explanation. Only the universe-from-nothing (ex nihilo) model admits that the universe has an explanation -- albeit a grandly mysterious one.]
This volume is classic science writing in a most entertaining package, it awaits some creative screenplay adaptor and video genius to make from it the best popular science audio-visual experience ever. Have at it.
It helped me understand..........2004-03-11
I'm a novice at this subject matter, and I've recently started reading introductory books on quantum physics for fun. I read, "The New Quantum Universe" prior to reading this. This easy to read book filled in some gaps that that I had. It helped me grasp some concepts that had otherwise passed over my head when reading the other book.
I understand that this is a classic text and I can see why. It's fun to read, and provides a foundation for further understanding. It explains uncertaintity, radioactive decay, and electron shells especially well.
I may not fully appreciate the concepts I was able to internalize from this book for quite some time. I can say that I strongly recommend it to the layman or anyone who's eager to understand some basics of this incredible field of study.
An alltime favorite!.......2003-09-23
A lovely reprinted edition of a peral from Gamow. The original edition has been out of print for a number of years. This 1993 edition has added commentary and a fascinating bio of Gamow. He was born in Odessa, in what was then Russia, --before the Soviet Union. The story of his escape to the West is straight out of a thriller. Only it is real! Gamow was referred to by a journalist, some time during the Cold War, as "the only scientist in America with a real sense of humor". He can take the most technical stuff and make it simple. Fun too! The book:--Intellectual treats, whimsy, but deep. Illustrated with lovely drawings by Gamow himself. Much of it can be understood by a child, and other parts might require a little concentration. All of it is great fun. Follow your imagination, and while you explore, you will learn about Einstein's theory of relativity. And in unexpected ways! You will see the wonders of physics thru the eyes of a child. With his unexpected thought experiments, Gamow has captured the imagination of generations of readers, and he has inspired a degree of curiosity that comes naturally to children.
The author George Gamow started in nuclear physics, during the Golden Age of Physics, worked with Niels Bohr in Copenhagen, then later in the US, on the Manhattan Project during WWII; and after the War, he was professor in Boulder Colorado. He has a building on campus of The University of Colorado named after him! He is one of the few scientists who wrote popular books. They are precious pearls, and they have been equally popular with my parent's generation as with mine. For awhile they were out of print, but luckely some have now been reprinted in recent years!
Other Gamow titles: Biography of Physics, Atomic Energy [dedicated to the hope of lasting peace], Physics of the Strapless Evning Gown,...We are lucky that Dover has reprinted some of them. Gamow's list of scientific accomplishments includes a 1948 landmark paper on the origin of chemical elements, the Big Bang model, and later work with F. Crick on DNA and genetic coding.-- Do more Gamow editions, Dover!

“[A] haunting story . . . Bears witness to the struggles of an African Caribbean woman as she seeks to find her place in America without selling her soul.” –BEBE MOORE CAMPBELL, Author of
Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine
When Sara Edgehill is given a scholarship to leave Trinidad and attend a college in Wisconsin, she is thrilled. America, the one she has seen in the movies, is a land of dreams, prosperity, and equality. Not like Trinidad, where her parents cast disappointed glances her way because she wasn’t born with lighter-colored skin. But when Sara leaves her island’s brilliant green fields and warm sparkling waters for the pale cornfields of the Midwest, the ties to her home and her past grip her as strongly as America’s cold, winter winds.
For as soon as Sara sets foot in her new home, she must make tough decisions. Wanting desperately to fit in, she begins to understand that in America, the color lines run deeper than they did even in Trinidad. And as Sara forms ties with two other West Indian students–the beguiling, haunted Courtney and the passionate, vivacious Sam–she is irrevocably pulled into the very center of America’s exploding civil rights movement.

Beyond Fiction.......2003-10-27
The widely respected and extremely talented author of When Rocks Dance and Bruished Hibiscus, Elizabeth Nunez brings us another powerful, lyrically superb piece of writing in BEYOND THE LIMBO SILENCE. Among a growing list of gifted writers from Trinidad-Tobago, Nunez chronicles the agonizing personal struggles of Sara Edgehill as she leaves her native Trinidad for a Catholic women's college in radically different Wisconsin. But there's much more to this story than merely "making cultural adjustments in a new environment." The author skillfully and brilliantly interweaves and delicately balances socio-politics and artistry into a bold intellectual defiance of literary convention by inviting the reader into the sometimes unfathomable mysticism of Caribbean reality. And what better historical vehicle to employ than the explosive dynamics of the 60s? I have had the pleasure of hearing Ms Nunez speak before a live university forum and this story to me reads more like a stolen page from her own life that she has chosen to share with us than a fictional account of a young girl experiencing college life in a faraway land. this is vigorously commanding storytelling which I admire greatly. This is a MUST READ novel.

I hear the silence........2002-10-03
Beyond the Limbo Silence, the story of a young woman with a passion
for books who left the opulence of her beautiful Trinidad to attend
a college in rural Wisconsin, reads like a fable with legends and
mythic creatures. Sara Edgehill left home because she felt she was
a sad reminder of what her mother could never have. She needs to
accept that this time in America is her destiny.
Sara's arrival in the early 1960's to this cold alien place where
she is neither loved nor understood is the beginning of a tumultuous
journey. She meets Sam, a young, charismatic African American man
and is immediaely drawn into the turbulence of the civil rights
struggle. And as she struggles to find a place in America without
selling her soul, Sara layers her awakening with the evocative
mysticism of her West Indies culture and she illuminates the pages
of the book. And finally she finds her empowerment.
This coming of age novel about the courage of the sixties is a candid
look at the differences and the sameness of both countries as they
struggled to obtain equality. It is an overwhelming display of the
strength and resiliency of the African dispora. Ms. Nunez has written
a captivating story in a beautiful prose, that's sprinkled with magical
realism. I highly recommend this book.

Very good book........2000-06-22
Not being familiar with Elizbeth Nunez, I was pleasantly surprised at the beauty of her writing. It was poetic without being overwhelming. She excels at setting description and character development. The plot moved fluidly along. I was kept intrigued, and found the book difficult to put down.
There was a need for a more full description of the spiritual terms and rituals in the book, either in text or perhaps in footnotes or glossary form. Because of the lack of this, confusion marred an otherwise delightful read.
I look forward to reading Nunez's other offerings.
A good storyline but heavy going.......2000-02-12
Nunez's book stands out from the many other novels by Caribbean women who have come to America because of the time and political context in which it is set. This makes for a very interesting story, but the novel doesn't meet its full potential because of poor editing. There were many passages that could have been worded more smoothly, and the book as a whole could have been much tighter.
A lesson for those too young to remember.......1999-12-25
Reading this book took me back, vividly, to the era of my youth. Ms. Nunez does a superb job of telling it like it was without being preachy or condecending. I knew right away that I had to pass the book on to my children. My children are so innocent. They just don't seem to realize the hidden pitfalls and subtleties of prejudice. I think this book, with its surprisingly gentle manner of revealing a violent time, will help them understand.
