Arthur Conan Doyle (Author of Sherlock Holmes), EO Wilson (famous tropical biologist), W. Somerset Maughm, Joseph Conrad, Alfred Russel Wallace (of Wallace's Line), and Henry Morton Stanley (excerpt from "The Finding of Livingstone") are to name but of few of the all-star authors featured in this book. Contains a huge number of excerpts from fiction novels, non-fiction books and essays, most of which are well-written (see above) and ALL of which are well-chosen. I will be teaching a tropical field course for high school students, and this is a perfect literary journey to help them with theirs.

Things you should know.......2000-12-06

I found that this book was very helpfull but you need to update every six months. There are a lot of better places to stay that you can get from the tourist information desk at the train stations.I want to recommend the Hotel Cervo just outside Malpensa Airport in Milan. It is a great value with excelent friendly service and a free shuttle service to the airport!

Down and Dirty.......2000-09-22

This book is wonderful for the traveller who is doing the home base approach or who is going to primarily big cities. The advantage of making a big city your home base is that they are often hubs for rail lines and often offer a good dose of European art and cultural events. Although the rooms listed in Frommer's are a bit pricey, I found them to be safe and reliable. The maps are terrific and the book is very user friendly. This is one book where it pays to buy the new issue each year. The hotel/pensions listed change almost every year. I took the new book and pieces from the old book as well. All information was reliable.

A feature Frommer's contains that Î particularly like is a down and dirty list of what things cost. How much will a coke cost you in local currency? What is that in dollars? How much is a massage or a museum? Very useful!

A book that stays with you.......2005-05-24

I just finished reading Tomorrow to Be Brave a few minutes ago. What a fantastic book! I couldn't put it down. I will skip summarizing the book because others have done a fine job in doing just that. What I will say is that if you want to read a biography that reads like a novel - a novel that is full of excitement, adventure, and history - then this is a great choice. I had never learned much about the North Africa theater of WWII and it was very interesting to read about it. Especially, the section on Bir Hakeim. A final opinion, I have to completely disagree with a reviewer who said that Susan Travers was sometimes whiny. Ms. Travers was anything but whiny. For any person who has been far from home, far from the normal every day routine (to say the least), who is smelly and hungry and doesn't feel well, they can probably appreciate Ms. Travers fantasizing about a good meal and a hot bath. I honestly don't know how Ms. Travers did it. She wasn't whiny, just honest. That being said, I would strongly encourage both men and women, regardless of whether or not they have any interest in military history, to read this book. It will be time well spent.

North Africa Adventure.......2005-05-04

This memoir of Susan Travers, "The only woman ever to serve officially in the French Foreign Legion" (book jacket) is an intriguing glimpse into the Second World War in North Africa. Travers, who in her younger life admittedly "acquired something of a reputation" (33), found the outbreak of WWII a turning point; determined to use her driving skills for a good cause, she signed up for the Croix Rouge (Red Cross). To be an ambulance driver, however, she had to become a nurse first, something Travers admits was never her strong point. Sent first to Finland, then West Africa, Sudan and the Eastern Mediterranean, Travers' driving adventures are entertaining, and the struggle between Vichy France and the Free French (led by de Gaulle) is riveting. The author does not claim to be a saint, and in fact at one point has one former lover sneaking into bed with her while she is covering up an affair with her employer - all staying in the same house! The great love of her life, according to this book, is General Marie-Pierre Koenig, commander of the North African outpost in Bir Hakeim. This is not an affair of equals, and frankly the picture of Koenig in the book seems to indicate a man who needs to be in power all the time, and will not tolerate any difference of opinion - Travers openly admits this, and by her own admission, is not always happy with the relationship. That aside, the sections on North Africa are illuminating: what the Free French forces were able to do in holding Bir Hakeim is laudable, especially with few supplies and little respect from their allies. Travers later life doesn't take up many pages, and the reader hopes that, after failed love affairs, when she finally marries, she will be happy. For a time, that's true; however, after she and her husband are sent to Vietnam after WWII, things fall apart, and after a brief separation in which he takes ill, their marriage is never the same. I found it interesting that despite her well-deserved heroics, there are many times in this book where Travers is, well, whiny - she complains about no baths or clean clothes, while it's obvious there are more important things to worry about...war is war, after all. I guess you could say these character traits are what makes the book entertaining on another level, but at times, the winging was annoying. Definitely worth reading, you'll learn a lot.

Don't Wait for the movie.......2003-03-01

I'm a student of military history. I read a good deal of stuff on the Second World War, studying various battles and campaigns. A few months ago I read John Bierman and Colin Smith's book on the battle of Alamein, and it included information about a woman who'd been in the French Foreign Legion, and served during the battle of Gazala as General Pierre Koenig's driver, enduring the bombardment and siege of Bir Hakeim. I was interested in this, and obtained a copy of the book. Whoa! Susan Travers, now in her 90's, has a story to tell.

The daughter of well-to-do English parents who lived in France for most of her adolesence, Travers spent most of the thirties on the continent, playing tennis, gambling, and cavorting with a series of lovers who were all uninterested in settling down with her. When World War II began, she decided to turn her independant streak (which had led to her learning to drive a car) into an asset, and join the armed forces, fighting for the Allies somehow. She wound up in the French army, trained as a nurse, drove an ambulance briefly in Finland, and then wound up in Africa.

There she served briefly in the campaign in Ethiopia, then was moved to Syria. Here, the doctor that she usually drove for was greviously wounded, and his replacement couldn't stand the thought of a female driver. He complained to his superior, and the next thing Travers knew she was driving for Pierre Koenig, who at the time was a colonel in the Free French army fighting in Syria. Soon the campaign was over, and Travers could set up house with the married Koenig for several months, because the colonel's wife was conveniently absent.

Their affair, however, had to remain secret for the most part. She stayed his driver when the unit he commanded was transferred to the Western Desert in Libya. Soon, the British ordered all women out of the Front lines, but she contrived to make her way back, and was at the post the Free French brigade held for most of the battle. This was Bir Hakeim, a crossroads in the desert that had been fortified with trenches and bunkers dug in the desert floor. Bir Hakeim was the southernmost part of the Allied position at the Battle of Gazala, and it was an important one. After initially attempting to take it quickly by storm, the Germans bypassed it and left its capture to the Italians, who repeatedly failed. The Germans then returned and also failed, and when the post was finally worn down to the point defense was no longer an option, the garrison surprised everyone by breaking out and escaping in their vehicles.

The Bir Hakeim battle makes up the middle quarter or so of the book, and it's a marvelous story. Travers was Koenig's driver for the whole battle, which means that when the breakout occurred, she drove the general's car. The car was hit by numerous bullets, but she and her passengers survived without being harmed.

After the battle, she and the general had to separate (the German propaganda machine made a thing of their affair) and she spent most of the rest of the war driving an ambulance or doctors. When the war ended she managed to enlist in the Foreign Legion, and served several years in overseas posts. Eventually she married a legionnaire, had children, and left the legion herself. When her husband finally passed away, she decided it was time to tell her story. I'm very glad she did.

Hard to stop reading once you have started with it.......2002-01-06

Wow, what a life! Let's be thankful that there were people who kept insisting that Susan Travers' story be written while she was still alive. And thanks to Wendy Holden that story makes such fascinating reading that you find it hard to believe this is the story of a real life. I did not know much about the events of the Second World War that took place in Africa. So, while having been interested in the personal story of this fascinating woman, I got quite a bit more insight into the political events of that time as well. This part is definitely Wendy Holden's second major contribution.

You read this book and ask yourself, "Is this true, did this really happen?" But of course it's true. Only an honest person could bare their soul as does Susan Travers, with the brilliantly sensitive prose of co-author Wendy Holden.

The story is spell-binding as our heroine bounces from battlefield to boudoir with breathtaking élan. So many words fall short- courageous, brave, intrepid, relentless, passionate and others- as she and her fellow Legionnaires take their stand on faraway battlefields, most notably Bir Hakeim in the desolate desert of North Africa.

But the most appropriate word to describe ajudant-chef Travers is probably "driven". She sums it up on page 267 as she bids farewell to her dying father: "I'd spent so much of my life seeking his approval that having never really obtained it, his death only left me feeling more empty. Any chance to impress him now was gone and I felt cheated".

'Tomorrow To Be Brave' is a work and a life. It speaks for itself. This woman knows herself and to herself she is true. How ironic and poignant that the "driven" hero of Bir Hakeim was in fact a driver (chauffeur) in the French Foreign Legion. Susan dodges pot-holes and pot-shots as she valiantly drives her paramour, the General, through the desert sands. She is truly an "angel of mercy" as she man-handles her ambulance in the muddy mountains of Italy.

So much history. So much romance. So much intrigue. So much honest pride. So much heartbreak. It's all there. Who needs fiction with a story like this! A little knowledge of French is helpful but read it anyway even if you don't know what "ma cherie" means.

Author Shelley Stoehr, who never seems to flinch at the grit of teenage angst, succeeds again with Tomorrow Wendy, the story of an unforgettable teen named Cary who finds herself obsessed with her boyfriend's sister. As the obsession propels Cary to steal odd bits and pieces from Wendy's room, Cary begins to wonder if, perhaps, she might have a "thing" for Wendy. What's really going on inside Cary's mind? Does she love Danny or his sister? And what would it mean to be gay? Unfortunately, drugs and manic dancing in underage nightclubs cloud Cary's mind even further. The only person who seems to know what she may be feeling is her best friend Rad, who is invisible to everyone else and who talks only in song lyrics. This frank tale of one teen's dangerous spiral through apathy, obsession, and drug-fueled hysteria will certainly be too disturbing for readers under age 14. For older readers, though, Stoehr's novel will completely deglamorize the use of drugs to mask confusion and self-doubt. By the end, even Cary takes fragile first steps toward a cleaner, more realistic way of living.

Disappointing.......2007-09-14

I found this book to be disappointing. I thought the title was misleading; "Tomorrow Wendy: A Love Story". To me a true love story is where the two mane characters go through their problems and end up together in the end. While this book is mostly about Carys' confusion about her own sexuality and her growing infatuation with Wendy. Cary trys to not feel her own emotions with drug use. I was happy when she thought that the drug use was not the way to go, but that was not until almost at the end of the book. This is a book about a teen girls confusion with her own sexuality, but I think the drug use is a bit much for very young readers; not for someone under 13 years of age, but that is up to the parent. If you are looking for a true love story, teen or not, I recommend "Annie On My Mind" by Nancy Garden. But If you are someone who enjoys reading just for reading, One who has a passion for the written word; then this book is not a total waste of time.

Flawed, but interesting.......2001-12-01

There's a good book in here somewhere, trying to get out. Actually, there are *two* good books in here, trying to get out; and that's the problem: they mesh badly. The main story, about the young protagonist's rather unhealthy obsession with her boyfriend's sister, is excellent. Cary is a very well-drawn character, both sympathetic and annoying, smart and stupid. Her desperate attempts to get the Wendy of the title to notice her are often heartbreaking, even as she continues to pretend she isn't really gay, and ignores and takes advantage of the affections of her school's new girl.

Unfortunately this takes place alongside the "other" story, which is the casual, unexplained and unapologetic use of drugs by Cary and most of her friends. This part of the book seems more like background detailing than a part of the story; it was never fleshed out, and wasn't even particularly credible. Cary gets high nearly every day, takes extasy and mushrooms on the weekends, and is a straight-A student? Her boyfriend, the school's dealer, is the most handsome and popular boy in her class? I don't think so.

And then there's the problem with Cary's imaginary friend Rab, who appears when she needs him and offers advice in the form of lyrics from rock songs. I got what the author was trying to do, but I never bought it.

Either story being told -- gay Cary, and drugged-out Cary -- would have been better off written separately. Together they make an uneven, if interesting, novel, that only gets a mild rating.

This book is pretty good. I enjoyed it and was always curious as to what would happen next. Even when you try to guess what is going to happen, you will be suprised by another twist in the story. It has an interesting story line and is written well. I dont think youll find another book quite like this one.

An extremely thoughtful and original book on the subject of sexual identity. However, the author's addition of a "guardian angel" in the form of the elusive, quasi-musician "Rad", who only speaks in song lyrics, is distracting and irritating. Cary is a sensitive and wholly likeable character, one that is universally familiar to teens. Stoehr's wit comes through in the guise of the "lesbian collective"; yet it is somewhat offensive to aggrandize a group of girls who taunt another for her inability to come to terms with her own sexuality. On the whole, it is an easy and likeable read.

Beautifully written story about teenage and lesbian love........1998-11-02

This is a book I would feel comfortable giving to young adults having trouble dealing with love and homosexuality. The story is written in a realistic and honest fashion which engages the reader all the way to the end. Shelley Stoehr has a wonderful grasp on young adults and how they feel.

Description:
An improvement of methodologies for characterising synthetic resins used in varnishes employed for art purposes has been suggested. Several kinds of standard of the most common polymeric resins (acrylic, vinyl, poly(vinyl alcohol), alkyd, cellulose nitrate, latex, polyester, polyurethane, epoxy, organosilicic, and ketonic) were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Synthetic resins characterization is based on the mathematical treatment of their whole spectrum, dividing it in 13 sections, avoiding the one-by-one interpretation of the absorption bands. The mathematical model takes as variables the maximal absorbance of each section, and each synthetic standard resin as categories. Two exploratory analysis methods, Hierarchical Clustering and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and a classificatory chemometric tool, linear discriminant analysis (LDA), are tested, validating the models by leave-one-out method. LDA is proved to be a powerful tool for grouping objects in categories, providing a satisfactory distinction of polymeric resin standards. The described analytical procedure has successfully been applied to characterization of synthetic resins contained in commercial varnishes.

A good, low cost intro to topology.......2003-07-20

This is a great book, especially considering the price. If you have some real analysis and group theory under your belt, then this will provide an enjoyable introduction to topology. It moves through point-set, basic combinatorial techniques, homotopy theory, simplicial homology, and a brief peek at differential manifolds. The author has done a good job of explaining basic concepts. By putting this in a Euclidean setting, you do not get a completely general approach, but you can cover a lot of (conceptual) ground with some economy.
If you need to brush up on analysis first, I recommend Rosenlict's INTRO TO ANALYSIS.

This book presents a revisionist account of Ralph Waldo Emerson's influential thought on individualism, in particular his political psychology.

Christopher Newfield analyzes the interplay of liberal and authoritarian impulses in Emerson's work in various domains: domestic life, the changing New England economy, theories of poetic language, homoerotic friendship, and racial hierarchy. Focusing on neglected later writings, Newfield shows how Emerson explored the tensions between autonomy and community—and consistently resolved these tensions by "abandoning crucial elements of both" and redefining autonomy as a kind of liberating subjection. He argues that in Emersonian individualism, self-determination is accompanied by submission to authority, and examines the influence of this submissive individualism on the history of American liberalism. In a provocative reading of Emerson's early and neglected later works, Newfield analyzes Emerson's emphasis on collective, or "corporate", world-building, rather than private possession. Tracing the development of this corporate individualism, he illuminates contradictions in Emerson's political outlook, and the conjunctions of liberal and authoritarian ideology they produced.
