5 out of 5 stars Frommers' Nepal 1999.......2000-01-03

This was the first book I bought to get ready for my trip to Nepal. I have not gone on that trip yet, but after reading this book I felt ready to tackle any travel encounters that may come my way. This book has extensive travel information to Nepal, dozens of phone numbers and up-to-date internet URL's related to Nepal and travel needs, as well as good information about hotels, restaurants, sights, you name it. This is a fantastic book to start out with if you are planning on visiting Nepal, and the price here is much less than what I paid for it at B&N. Happy traveling!

5 out of 5 stars Well presented, thoughtfully written, accurate and useful.......1999-01-30

The evaluations of activities were accurate, and the helpful hints on planning really helped us optomize our trip. When you use this guide, you'll imagine that the author is really there with you.

Moo Nelson is fat--pale white blubbery fat--and he gets rained on every day at school for it. The jokes, the insults, the snide laughter, the beatings--all of it he calls the RAIN. Moo has learned to "umbrellarize" it, to walk through it with his eyes down. Because after school there is always the bridge--a place where he can where he can watch the cars go by on the highway and find some shelter from the RAIN.

That is until the day he sees two speeding cars, a crash, a scuffle, and a murder on the bridge. Moo is the only witness, and his story is not what the police want to hear. If he tells the truth, Keith Vine, a notorious bad guy, will go free, and Detective Inspector Callan will retaliate by sending Moo's father to jail for welfare fraud. If he lies, Vine will take violent revenge. The secret pressures mount on Moo from all sides--money and gifts, threats and beatings--until he chooses to kiss the RAIN, to take action against his tormentors.

Kevin Brooks again shows the brilliance that won him acclaim for Martyn Pig and Lucas. The story emerges through a murky stream of consciousness; Moo's working-class British voice swirls past the boulders of plot events. Moo is befuddled, hurting, and enormously touching as he struggles toward a dimly perceived Right Thing to Do, and misses the mark badly. This third YA novel from Kevin Brooks' is evocative of the best of PBS' Mystery! Series. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

            Book Description

Moo Nelson likes to be alone. Overweight and shy, Moo is constantly mocked and bullied by his cruel classmates. He's happiest spending time on a secluded bridge above the highway, watching the cars go by. One day, from his special spot, Moo witnesses a crime that changes his life forever. He sees a car chase and a murder--and suddenly Moo's a celebrity of sorts. The police, the lawyers, and even the bullies are now really interested in Moo. But so is one shady character who seems intent on tracking Moo down. Now all Moo has to do is find out the truth behind the crime...before it's too late.

4 out of 5 stars Kissing the Rain.......2006-12-16

I read this for a Lit Circle, and I must warn you: this book IS confusing. If you are looking for something easy to understand, then stay away. But if you are looking for something that makes you rethink how life is, or maybe even relate to, then this is alright.

Moo is fifteen, fat, and goes to the bridge to get away from The Rain, which is what he calls it when he gets bullied. One night, he is watching the traffic down below and thinking in his head, and listening to the swooshing, and he witnesses a murder. So now he's stuck between the truth and lies, and he basically has nothing to do and no way to know what's right and wrong.

I suppose the way it's written, which to me sort of reminded me of a journal entry, can be annoying at times, but it is interesting to hear Moo's tale.

3 out of 5 stars Moo? Moo who? The cow?.......2006-04-24

This book is about this boy named Moo who witnessed a car crash. This car crash also led to a murder. Moo is one of those boys who always get made fun of because he is fat, and never gats any attention at all. Everyone who knows about the crash and murder (including the bad guys) want Moo to talk to them and tell them every single detail that he saw. Moo won't do that; he likes all the attention that he can get, whether it is negative or positive. The guy who is getting charged with the murder hired some professionals to try to get Moo to change his statement about him. You will have to read the book to see if the bad guys can get Moo to change his mind about his statement.
I didn't like this book because I thought that it didn't take off, and get interesting fast enough. I don't have a good enough attention span for these types of books.
I would recommend this book to readers who like all types of books, and don't judge a book by its cover.

5 out of 5 stars I simply love this book........2006-04-23

Okay, I admit that when I first read this book, after a few chapters' reading, I found this book was really BORING and regretted buying it.
But as I moved on to the last chapter, the kissing-the-rain thing hit me. Kiss-moo-or-die, I had never thought of it could be changed into the kissing-the-rain way.
That was when I started to find this book AWESOME. And though in the end we do not get to know Moo's decision, the ending isn't bad.
I am currently recommending this book to all my friends.=)

            5 out of 5 stars IT'S FREAKIN' AWESOME!.......2006-03-13

When I read every page I LOVE the capitalized words like when Moo's thinkin: "DUHDUHDUHDUHDUH.... what-the HELLS THAT????? Dad probably fell out of bed- KABOOM!!- wake up the whole damn village." I find Moo's thoughts amusing and HILLARIOUS! Although I'm only on the 8th chapter, I can tell anyone whos likes funny books and loves a good mystery should read this book!

            1 out of 5 stars What a book.......2006-01-30

It was very weird because he never used proper English and always said cos instead of because and there are so many random words that have been fully capitalized. I still have not finished the book but it takes a while for me to read it because of the confusing plot. Recently a couple times I have had to re-read the part before so I can understand it. In my opinion, if you are looking for the intense book that the back says you will be fooled. I went into the bookstore and read the back and thought it looked interesting, but when I got home and began reading it...it was a totally different book than it says. Do not buy this book if your daughter or son likes suspense book because it isn't.

                  Book Description

This unique collection of reviews has arisen due to the belief of the Editors that joints need to be studied as a whole organ. Too often workers concentrate only on one tissue without considering the effects that a pathological change or injury in one part may have upon the whole joint. The synovial joint is a complex unit composed of many separate parts, such as cartilage, bone, ligament, and synovium, all of which play a role in the functionality of the whole. These tissues must exist and work together in close, and often strenuous, conditions. Therefore a certain level of interaction is to be expected.

The authors have been chosen for their wide-ranging expertise, thus contributions range from the molecular and biochemical, through development and cell biology, to histological, anatomical, and clinical studies. Together they provide a comprehensive and useful source of reference for anyone interested in the biology of joints.

                          Book Description

In 1609, the first edition of Shakespeare’s Sonnets was published, featuring the mysterious dedication: “To Mr W.H.” Ever since, the identity of Mr W.H. has been the subject of a series of fascinating theories—but none quite so ingenious as that of Oscar Wilde’s The Portrait of Mr W.H. With a Foreword by Peter Ackroyd.

Cambridge scholar Cyril Graham spent his days performing in Shakespeare’s plays, and, being somewhat effeminate in nature, he was cast in the female roles. And then he made a rather startling discovery—the “Mr W.H.” to whom Shakespeare dedicated his Sonnets could be none other than Will Hughes, the boy–actor of Shakespeare’s plays! But when no one shared his conviction, he resolved to find another way to convince them… Notorious for his flamboyant and unorthodox lifestyle, Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) wrote poetry, plays, and novels; however, it was his theatrical masterpieces The Importance of Being Ernest and An Ideal Husband that secured his reputation as one of the supreme wits of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Wilde's Interesting Proposal on the Mystery of W.H........2006-10-08

Wilde's The Portrait of Mr W.H., is an interesting account of the mystery of W.H., the person Shakespeare devoted his famous Sonnets.

When one reads Wilde's prose, one can actually feel his thoughts and feelings. As critic and author, Peter Ackroyd, comments:

`This is quintessential Wilde, introducing paradox into the realm of speculation and wit into the sphere of art.'

Most English 19th century intellectuals were sincerely obsessed with Shakespeare's Sonnets, because it is the bard's notions on love, art, beauty and what it really means to be an artist.

Rather than spoil the plot, let me just say that the book covers Aestheticism, Literary Criticism and obsession with `literature' which can, in some cases, be worse than opium addiction.

If one has any interest in the Aesthetic movement of that period will find this novella fascinating.

As is well known, Elizabethian England did not allow women to act on the stage as it was viewed as improper for a lady. Thus male actor's had to play the female roles. It is the protagonists thesis that the mysterious W.H. was a male actor who performed most of Shakespear's female roles, thus the Sonnets, and the proposal that the Bard had a particular fascination with the young actor.

The Portrait of Mr. W.H. was written over a time period of a few years, the final draft finished by Wilde while he was incarcerated in the Reading Gaol. This final manuscript disappeared for many years to then turn up in a personal collection.

This short piece is recommended to all those interested in Wilde and the 19th century Aesthetic movement.

5 out of 5 stars Passions about Shakespeare in 19c London........1997-09-05

This little book is about Shakespeare's sonnets, but more than that it is a book about nineteenth-century young men and their obsession with Shakespeare. Two in particular become completely engaged by a particular literary interpretation--that Shakespeare wrote his beautiful sonnets not for a wealthy patron, but to his Rosalind, or rather to the actor who played all his lovely strong women--that is, to an adolescent boy. The book is a cautionary tale about heightened involvement in literary ideas. A literary idea can possess one as completely as opium, and can be just as dangerous
