Book Description

Little botanist / first naturalist

Of John Bartram's nine children, it is William who best loves nature and wants to follow in his father's footsteps. William dreams of accompanying his father as he explores the wilderness of colonial America as botanist to the King of England in search of plant specimens. Using journals, maps, and her own vibrant paintings, Deborah Kogan Ray tells the captivating story of Billy's first trip to the Catskill Mountains and his further adventures as an adult, including a long, perilous journey into the remote wilderness.

A bibliography, biographical notes, and list of plant discoveries complete this remarkable book about America's first naturalist.

5 out of 5 stars a very fine book about a remarkable man.......2005-06-12

This is a fine children's book about the life of William Bartram, one of America's early and great naturalists. The story is told in the form of a journal, written by the young William, and is accompanied by helpful maps and vivid illustrations of scenes from his various journeys. Begun on his eighth birthday, the brief but evocative journal entries tell of the boy's early interest in botany, and of his longing to accompany his father John Bartram on his explorations of the newly colonized Americas. He learns to make detailed renderings of leaves, and to identify the various types of plants in the region. Historical details are introduced casually, in the matter-of-fact manner of a child. He tells, for example, of a war between the British and the French that caused them to cancel a journey, or of his encounter with a friend of his father's -- Benjamin Franklin!! - who explains to him the marvels of electricity. We eventually see the young boy grow into a man, who is both sensitive to nature and respectful of the diverse cultures of the various inhabitants of the land. Particularly poignant is the subtle manner in which the author portrays the young man's attachment to and feeling for his aging father, as indicated in a pivotal scene where the son must rescue his father from drowning. Or in a later scene when William brings stories of a lovely but as-yet unnamed tree. His father has lost his vision, and cannot see the drawings that his son brings home for him, but together they name the species Franklinia, in honor of their mutual friend. In an informative afterward, the author points out that this tree has only survived today due to the plantings of it that Bartram made on his farm. This is a very simple and unassuming story, about a remarkable man, that can be appreciated by both young and old. It introduced me to a part of American history that I knew little about, and even inspired my two children to begin journals of the things they discover in nature.

John Bartram (1699-1777), "the first native-born American to devote his entire life to the study of nature," was an eminently practical man, a scientist devoted to the rigorous description of living things. Among his subjects was the Venus flytrap, along with hundreds of species of plants and animals, fully "one quarter of all the plants identified and sent to Europe during the colonial period." His son William (1739-1823) was, by contrast, something of a dreamer, and far less methodical a scientist than was his father. Yet his lyrical Travels, an account of specimen-collecting in the Deep South, is read today, while John Bartram's work is not. Thomas Slaughter examines their lives, noting the influence both men had on Henry David Thoreau and the English Romantics, especially Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth.

Book Description

The nature of early America as seen through the eyes of a father and son, two 18th-century botanical explorers and their natures as men is explored thoroughly throughout the pages of this book. Slaughter plumbs the depths of the Bartrams' natures and tells a story about what it meant to be men who sought purpose and meaning in the verdant wilderness that still covered much of North America. 15 illustrations. 2 maps.

4 out of 5 stars Did William or Didn't William.......2001-12-18

One wonders if in his collection of seeds and specimens maybe William may have been spreading some.
If this is a biography, it is genealogically lacking for the researcher. Ann Bartram, daughter of John, wife of George Bartram, and sister of William did not die in the same year as her father, as quoted in the book. She died much later. She is on the 1790 Philadelphia County Pennsylvania tax list. Is listed as being ill in the early eighteen hundreds, according to the Wright papers, and her son George Bartram, Jr. is the executor of her estate ca. 1824.
Other than this, it is very good reading and Thomas's revelations of the difference and likeness of this father and son seem typical. Since I am not a word for word reader, I am sure that when I pick it up again, I will find more wonderful surprises

5 out of 5 stars This was an illuminating experience........1998-05-22

Many years ago I read "The Travels of William Bartram" for a seminar course in American Literature. Recently I read "Cold Mountain" in which the main character has discovered Bartram's "Travels" and peripatetically dips into it to pass the time and sharpen his ability to observe nature. Now we have this "Natures" book which details what is known about the Bartrams--father and son. I found Mr. Slaughter's synthesis and presentation of primary sources a model of good scholarship. Perhaps it is just my way, but I found reading about the Bartrams as interesting as so many people found Pamela Harriman. I attribute this to the author's knowledge and perception of them and his ability to bring them alive on the page. I read this book in a library copy, but I just bought my own copy because I know I will want to slip into the 18th century with the Bartrams again.

American natural history owes much to gifted amateurs who, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, traveled widely, collected willy-nilly, and then, back at home, devoted years to sorting through their collections and cataloging their contents--an enterprise that introduced scientific rigor into what had been a kind of hobby. So writes literary scholar Christoph Irmscher, who, in exploring the aesthetic aspects of American natural history, considers the careers of several early naturalists, including Charles Willson Peale, John Bartram, John James Audubon, Louis Agassiz, and, in an unlikely turn, the showman P.T. Barnum, who turned a penchant for collecting oddments of nature into an itinerant freak show. All of these, Irmscher writes, delighted in "transforming relatively random assemblages of natural collectibles into works of art," works that would in many instances form the foundations for what are today important collections. Among the many pleasant surprises in Irmscher's narrative is an account of an 1865 trip organized by Agassiz to the Amazon River. One of the participants was the young William James, who would later become a famed psychologist and who wrote admiringly of Agassiz's relentless energy in pursuit of scientific specimens while admitting, "If there is anything I hate it is collecting." Irmscher's elegant book will be of interest to historians of 19th-century science, and to general readers with a fondness for the work of the brilliant, often eccentric, amateurs of the past. --Gregory McNamee

            5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2005-01-14

Awesome! Well written. The earlier series of these books were usally the best. The stories gradually turned into more kid fare as time went on. This being #6 in the series has you as a special intelligence agent out to foil the Russian's plan to intercept and decode the whale's complex song patterns before they dissappear during the winter. I was thinking to myself 'what in the heck does that have to do with national security?' Well, if you meet the right people and ask the right questions, you will be going, 'ohhhhh, I get it!' Along the way, there are greasy enemy agents on your trail, sting operations, car chases, questionable suspects, espionage, and deadly weapons. A treat!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......1999-11-21

This was the first Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book that I everread, when my older brother brought it home from elementary school. After samping a large number of the series, it remains among the best.

Even at a young age, my brother and I recognized the sheer number of kitschy lines invading this book. It had us in stitches, and I'm certain if either of us mentioned the title, we'd begin to recount our favorites. One that sticks in my head:

"'I guess we can't count on you for anything, Jonah, so we'll have to count you out...' Those are the last words you ever hear."

Ah, yes, the plot has something to do with your being a secret agent who has to save the whales. But who ever EXACTLY cared about the plots? It was all a matter of racing through the book to figure out every possible twist. Who can forget the hand-wringing tension of deciding which of four or five different spots would be the best to swim to? Or whether to secretly break into the bad guys rendez-vous house, or simply knock at the front door and bluff your way in? The KGB figures in somewhere, and all the villains are ridiculous Russian stereotypes (who look in the illustrations, if I remember correctly, oddly similar to Stalin, Kruchschev, etc.). This surely did derive from the collective Cold War imagination. I believe Trotsky is even mentioned by name, totally out-of-place, showing a complete disregard for not mixing up the historical facts in young children's brains.

Oh, the flood of nostalgia! Of course, the copy my brother and I had eventually became so worn out, it had to be disposed of, and I've never seen another edition. If I ever found it in a used bookstore, I'd pay the price. But does anyone else remember this classic piece of camp? E-mail me, we'll rap about the glory days of the strange series, and its wonderful seventh volume.

Hardbound. The synthesis of complex natural products has attracted the efforts of the foremost organic chemists, both because many natural products have exhibited significant biological activity and because they have taxed the ingenuity of many brilliant minds towards developing synthetic routes to them. During the last decade, organic synthesis has evolved in an accelerated manner, particularly in the field of stereoselective methods for the synthesis of natural products of increasing complexity. The present volume is the fourth devoted to stereoselective synthesis. The articles included in the book cover the synthetic approaches to marine terpenoids, allenic and acetylenic carotenoids, gibberellins, antheridiogens, fungal metabolites, macrocycle antibiotics, sugar analogues, peptidoglycan analogues, chemical defense agents in ants, medium sized ring heterocycles, Strychnos alkaloids, semiochemicals and bioregulators. The authoritative reviews are all wr

                                          Book Description

Hardbound. The plant kingdom offers a vast largely untapped source of a wide diversity of organic compounds, potentially useful in medicine. With the advent of powerful spectroscopic techniques and improved separation procedures it is now possible to elucidate the structures of compounds isolated in sub-milligram quantities. There has accordingly been a significant increase in the number of new compounds reported in the literature during the last decade. However, efforts at bioassay-directed fractionation of plant extracts have lagged behind, largely due to the absence of pharmacological screens in most laboratories involved in phytochemical research. The present volume contains contributions from a number of leading natural product chemists. The syntheses of the avermectin-milbemycin family of antiparasitic agents, macrolide antibiotics, &bgr;-lactam antibiotics, 1&bgr;-methylcarbapenem derivatives, taxane diterpenes and tumor-promoting diterpenes,
