5 out of 5 stars Unique, warm and courageous story of an environmental pioneer who saved the Ridley Turtles.......2007-09-29

Evelyn Sizemore was not only the best person to write this book, but possibly the only person who had the passion and grace to tell this story so beautifully. The added bonus to this book is Evelyn's black and white photographs. Amazing how the current message of sound environmental policies for the protection of endangered animals confirms the pure wisdom of their early struggles to save the Ridley turtles on the beaches of South Padre Island some 20 or 30 years ago. These two women were way ahead of their time and inspire us all to stand in our truth as they did in theirs.

The Turtle Lady: Ila Fox Loetscher Of South Padre is the life story of a truly remarkable woman who, after the death of her husband, devoted herself to preserving the sea turtle Lepidochelys kempii (Kemp's ridley), from extinction. A superb biographical portrait of a woman who was a pioneer aviator, through her marriage and tragic widowhood, to her years as a devoted environmentalist and animal lover, The Turtle Lady is not to be missed. This is an engaging depiction of a truly remarkable and selfless life. The Turtle Lady is especially recommended reading for wildlife and environmental protection activists.

3 out of 5 stars Forgot to caution against muggers.......2000-08-17

The book provides fine lists of places to stay and visit, but fails to caution against the muggers. I was violently mugged, drug through the street and choked by my purse strap until my partner smashed a full beer can into the guy's head. This happended less than one block from our hotel off La Rambla in Barcelona. Stories like this were common from others in our hotel and from those we have told about it since. Beware in Barcelona! day or night!

3 out of 5 stars not for student budgets.......2000-08-07

I am a student and Fodors is definitely not the guide book to use if you are a student. Let's Go is better for the truly budgeted person. Let's Go also has more detailed maps.

Looking at the accreditations of the writers impressed me in that they had the inside scoops on hotels and restaurants, however they also all speak Spanish. For the non-native speaker, you can be treated less friendly in places where the local Spanish are favored over tourists.

There were some bright spots in the book, like the coverage on Cordoba and the little blurbs on the history of certain well-known sights.

          5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2000-06-23

I go to Spain every summer and you dont have to go to Spain to see the beautiful buildings and scenaries. This book has it all! If your doing a report on Spain or just want to know about or look at the wonderful places their this BOOK has IT ALL!

5 out of 5 stars Fodor's Spain is the best of many Spain travel guides.......2000-06-18

Fodor's Spain 2000 travel guide excels in many facets: it offers travelers both cultural information and vital travel hints such as excellent hotels, restaurants and can't miss sights. We used Rick Steve's book and found it helpful but Fodor's was indispensable. One of the nice features is that is offers choices of hotels and restaurants for many different price ranges. It also provides excellent maps. The phone numbers and prices are accurate. On the downside, information on regional travel was sparse and not helpful. All in all, an excellent travel guide.

High school condom distribution and a hotly contested sex education curriculum set a small New England town's blood boiling and books burning in The Year They Burned the Books, an issue-driven novel by Nancy Garden. Jamie Crawford is the senior editor of the "Telegraph," her high school's newspaper, but the publication of her editorial in favor of the school's new policy to distribute condoms happens to coincide with the election of a new, highly conservative school board member. As a result, Jamie suddenly finds her editorial voice gagged. Soon the school's health books have been removed from the classrooms for "review," a conservative parents' group stages a library book burning, and Jamie's beloved teacher is forced to resign as the newspaper's faculty advisor. Jamie's personal life also becomes more complicated as she tries to deal with her physical attraction to Tessa, a new girl at school. Then, on top of it all, Jamie and her best friend Terry (who is openly gay) are the victims of an attack by a group of conservative students and Jamie has to decide if she can handle the consequences of coming out.

Teens love controversies, especially those involving young people, and there is scarcely a hot topic here that Garden doesn't touch. Yet in spite of the scene-stealing issues, Garden's timeless message that hardship shapes character is illustrated well in Jamie's transition from a "maybe," (as in "maybe gay, maybe straight")to a "probably" by novel's end. An excellent choice for use in high school discussions about censorship and free speech. (Ages 13 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert

          Book Description

By the author of Annie on My Mind

When Wilson High Telegraph editor Jamie Crawford writes an opinion piece in support of the new sex-ed curriculum, which includes making condoms available to high school students, she has no idea that a huge controversy is brewing. Lisa Buel, a school board member, is trying to get rid of the health program, which she considers morally flawed, from its textbooks to its recommendations for outside reading. The newspaper staff find themselves in the center of the storm, and things are complicated by the fact that Jamie is in the process of coming to terms with being gay, and her best friend, Terry, also gay, has fallen in love with a boy whose parents are anti-homosexual. As Jamie's and Terry's sexual orientation becomes more obvious to other studetns, it looks as if the paper they're fighting to keep alive and honest is going to be taken away from them. Nancy Garden has depicted a contemporary battleground in a novel that probes deep into issues of censorship, prejudice, and ethics.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-03-16

Good book on the startling nature of homophobia, especially for younger readers (grades 8-11)

4 out of 5 stars Sexual and Religious Turmoil.......2007-02-23

Jamie is a high school student in a small New England town, and she is the editor of her high school's newspaper. She thinks she may be gay. One of her best friends, Terry, thinks that he may be gay also. They don't want to tell anyone else, though, for fear of being targeted more by bullies in their class.

The school year starts with controversy--the nurse's office has implemented a program to distribute condoms to students who go to the nurse's office for them once a week. Jamie writes an editorial for the paper in support of the condom distribution, and the school paper and its advisor are attacked for it.

Then things go really downhill. A woman with a hidden agenda is elected to the school board, on the campaign promise that she will help people in this community return to values and morals. When she is elected to the school board, she starts a very conservative religion-based group. Their mission is to remove from the school's curriculum any mention of anything except abstinence as a method of birth control. She argues that the schools should be teaching that sex before marriage is morally wrong. This woman also wants removed from all libraries and all curricula any mention of homosexuality, especially if it is presented as simply an alternative lifestyle, instead of something evil and wrong.

Jamie's life is in turmoil. She feels as though she can't admit she is gay when the environment in her town has turned to violently against homosexuality. She feels bad for her friend Terry, who is trying to have a relationship with another student, Ernie, who is desperately trying to repress the fact that he is gay, for fear of what will happen when people find out. Jamie is attracted to a new girl at school, but can't figure out if this girl is gay or not. To make matters worse, Jamie's old best friend, Nomi, is a member of a church group that states without exception that homosexuality is wrong. Jamie is stuck in the middle of the controversy. Will she stay true to herself?

This was a really compelling story of what it is like to be gay in high school these days. I liked that the main characters, despite all of the stuff going on around them, were strong and at peace with themselves and their sexuality. The story was complex and didn't really have easy solutions, which is realistic for these issues today.

3 out of 5 stars Ripped from the headlines.......2005-02-13

Author Nancy Garden has received critical acclaim for her work, including the American Library Association's Margaret A. Edwards Award for her lifetime contribution in writing for young adults.

Garden is no stranger to the issues presented in this book. First, she understands what is to be gay youth. Secondly, she knows what it is to be the target of censorship. Her book _Annie on my Mind_ was burned on the steps of the Kansas City School Board building (1993) and removed from the shelves in Olathe, Kansas.

Although printed 6 years ago, it feels as though it were ripped from today's headlines. Homophobia is rampant and using hatred and/or fear of homosexuals is perfectly acceptable in today's political climate. Recently an Alabama state legislator introduced a bill to bar the use of state funds "for the purchase of textbooks or library materials that sanction, recognize, foster, or promote homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle." The bill would also remove items already in libraries and prohibit theatrical productions at state-funded institutions of such classics as Tennessee Williams's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof or the appearance of classroom speakers who discuss homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle.

In today's political climate I recommend everyone read _The Year they Burned Books_ for a look at the affects of censorship. It's an easy, yet thought provoking read. This is one fictional story that is relevant today.

          4 out of 5 stars Oy vey!!!.......2003-05-22

Could there be anything else in this book? Censorship, homophobia, the religious right, sexuality, suicide--I can't think of a book that attempts to tackle so many issues at once. Not that Garden doesn't handle all of the issues well. I am particularly impressed with how she works in a minor physical altercation--a level of homophobia not seen in her earlier novels, and, I suspect, a reaction to the homocide of Matthew Shepard the same year. This novel raises many questions and is a must read for gay and straight teenagers.

          3 out of 5 stars A Controversial Story.......2001-11-29

The Year They Burned the Books is about a group of high school students who run the school newspaper. When the paper's editor, Jamie Crawford, writes an editorial supporting the new Health Ed curriculum, which includes condom distribution, a controversy erupts. Jamie and her friends' views are opposed by fellow students, the new school board member, and even Jamie's good friend, Nomi. Can Jamie still keep her friendship with Nomi while coming to terms with her own beliefs and sexuality? I liked this book because most of the characters and situations were realistic and believable.
The only things I didn't like were Lisa Buel's comments; they really made me mad. In this case for me, being fair to everyone was difficult. Something that confused me was why some of the kids were so Bible-obsessed. I have never seen kids like that in my life. Also, I don't remember any passage in the Bible saying homosexuality was evil. What Bible were they reading?

                Book Description

From Markov Jump Processes to Spatial Queues aims to develop a unified theory of spatial queues that yields concrete results for the performance analysis of mobile communication networks. A particular objective is to develop the most natural generalization of existing concepts (e.g. the BMAP) toward the needs of mobile communication networks. To these belong the spatial distribution of batch arrivals and users in the system as well as time-inhomogeneous (e.g. periodic) arrival intensities and user movements. One of the major recent challenges for the stochastic modelling of communication systems is the emergence of wireless networks, which are used by more and more subscribers today. The main new feature of those, which is not covered by classical queuing theory, clearly is the importance of the user location within the area that is served by the base stations of the network. In the framework of queuing theory, this opens up the natural extension of classical queuing models towards queues with a structured space in which users are served. The present book is intended to introduce this extension under the name of spatial queues. The main point of view and the general approach will be that of Markov jump processes. We start with a closer look into the theory. Then we present new results for the theory of stochastic processes as well as for classical queuing theory. Finally we introduce the new concepts of spatial Markovian arrival processes and spatial queues. The main text is divided into three parts. The first part provides a new presentation of the theory of Markov jump processes. We derive a number of new results, especially for time-inhomogeneous processes, which have been neglected too much in the current textbooks on stochastic processes. For the first time, the class of Markov-additive jump processes is analysed in detail. This extends and unifies all Markovian arrival processes that have been proposed up to now (including arrivals for fluid queues) and provides a foundation for the subsequent introduction of spatial Markovian arrival processes. The second part contains new results for classical queues with BMAP input. These include the first explicit formulae for the distribution of periodic queues. The class of fluid Markovian arrival processes is introduced, and we give statistical estimates for the parameters of a BMAP. In the third part, the concepts of spatial Markovian arrival processes (abbreviated: SMAPs) and spatial queues are introduced. After that, periodic spatial Markovian queues are analysed as a model for the cells of a wireless communication network. From Markov Jump Processes to Spatial Queues is intended to reach queuing theorists, researchers in the field of communication systems, as well as engineers with some background in probability theory. Furthermore, it is suitable as a textbook for advanced queuing theory on the graduate or post-graduate level.

Our times can be best understood from those that have come prior. Reading Polybius's The Rise of the Roman Empire is one of the good historical sources to assist in this process. A Greek statesman, who saw the rise of Roman first hand and wrote about it.

Greece was waning in 200 BC and Roman was rising and the Mediterranean gained a new empires. His book is more a personal overview and historical discussion of the events in tune to Tocqueville's Democracy in America, but less a study like the brilliant Capitalism and Civilization in the 15th to 18th Century by Braudel. If you like reading the Roman histories from Livy, this will give you an understanding of the early part of the history, while still a republic. Learn about the effect of Hannibal and the destruction of Carthage in 146 BC.

It is just sad that a lot of his other writings have been lost to us.

                4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2005-11-03

As stated by previous reviewer Polybius treatment of the encounter between the Roman Commander Regulus and the Spartan General Xanthippus (leading the Carthaginians), and the "lessons learned" from their encounter justifies buying this book. You can still learn from others mistakes.

Polybius treatment of the encounter between the Roman Commander Regulus and the Spartan General Xanthippus (leading the Carthaginians), and the "lessons learned" from their encounter justifies buying this book. The rest is gravy.

1 out of 5 stars Sadly, Penguin has abridged Polybius in this edition.......2003-05-25

It is unfortunate that, despite the fact that some of Polybius's Histories have been lost over time, Penguin made the decision to cut out even more from the text that has luckily survived down to us through the ages. To make matters worse, the introduction doesn't really state clearly what exactly has been cut.

Next time I want to read one of the classics, I'll go immediately to Loeb. It's worth the extra cash. Anyone want my Penguin copy?

Dont be confused by the relatively low ranking, this book is good. The only trouble is that it only contains fragments of the greatest historians ever. Though this is what the editor set out to do, you will feel cheated by not having the whole story to read. If all you want is a glimpse at what made the ancient historians so special, this is the book for you. However, chances are that you will want the complete story as well, something this collection cant offer.

                  Book Description

Arthur Eckstein's fresh and stimulating interpretation challenges the way Polybius' Histories have long been viewed. He argues that Polybius evaluates people and events as much from a moral viewpoint as from a pragmatic, utilitarian, or even "Machiavellian" one. Polybius particularly asks for "improvement" in his audience, hoping that those who study his writings will emerge with a firm determination to live their lives nobly. Teaching by the use of moral exemplars, Polybius also tries to prove that success is not the sole standard by which human action should be judged.

As a young man, the historian Polybius was an active politician in the Achaean Confederacy of the second century B.C., and later, during his detention at Rome, became a close friend of some leading Roman families. His History is our most important source for the momentous half-century during which the Romans weathered the war with Hannibal and became masters of the Mediterranean world. F. W. Walbank describes the historical traditions within which Polybius wrote as well as his concept of history.

                    Book Description

Polybius (born ca. 208 BCE) of Megalopolis in the Peloponnese (Morea), served the Achaean League in arms and diplomacy for many years, favouring alliance with Rome. From 168 to 151 he was hostage in Rome where he became a friend of Aemilius Paulus and his two sons, and especially adopted Scipio Aemilianus whose campaigns he attended later. In late life he was trusted mediator between Greece and the Romans whom he admired; helped in the discussions which preceded the final war with Carthage; and, after 146, was entrusted by the Romans with details of administration in Greece. He died at the age of 82 after a fall from his horse.

The main part of Polybius's history covers the years 264-146 BCE. It describes the rise of Rome to the destruction of Carthage and the domination of Greece by Rome. It is a great work, accurate, thoughtful, largely impartial, based on research, full of insight into customs, institutions, geography, causes of events and character of people; it is a vital achievement of first rate importance, despite the incomplete state in which all but the first five of the forty books have reached us. Polybius's overall theme is how and why the Romans spread their power as they did.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of Polybius is in six volumes.

Great history of Rome, translation is okay. Includes the Greek language text on left page, English on right. Please note: This is one of six volumes! This is not clear from the description of the books.

The Penguin version, a better/clearer translation, does not include the Greek. One volume, not complete. May be more accessible for most readers. Is certainly less expensive!

This volume contains nineteen important essays related to the Greek historian Polybius by Professor F.W. Walbank, the recognized authority on the subject. The essays deal with Polybius as a historian, with his views on Rome and with many historical topics for which he is the principal source. A substantial introduction provides a critical account of work done on Polybius during the last twenty-five years. This volume contains nineteen of the more important of Frank Walbank's recent essays on Polybius and is prefaced by a critical discussion of the main aspects of work done on that author during the last quarter of a century. Several of these essays deal with specific historical problems for which Polybius is a major source. Five deal with Polybius as an historian and three with his attitude towards Rome; one of these raises the question of 'treason' in relation to Polybius and Josephus. Finally, two papers (one now appearing for the first time in English) discuss Polybius' later fortunes - in England up to the time of John Dryden and in twentieth-century Italy in the work of Gaetano de Sanctis. Several of these essays originally appeared in journals and collections not always easily accessible, and all students of the ancient Mediterranean world will welcome their assembly within a single volume.
