Book Description
Colin Poole examines all aspects of Tonle Sap, Cambodia's Great Lake: its environment, fauna, history, culture and its beauty, all shown through evocative and memorable photographs, encouraging visits!
Customer Reviews:
Will Photos Spark Action?.......2007-09-06
I visited Cambodia, including Tonle Sap, last November, and was struck by the massive role of the water body in the Cambodian culture, history, and economy, AND its incredible environmental vulnerability.
This book brings this area to life in a way that should spark the kind of international commitment and action that will be required to protect it--and the livelihoods of those who live on and around it now.
I tell my kids about vehicles that can really leverage social change--the photographs of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in winter, eviscerating the argument that there's nothing there so nothing to spoil. Those that fly funders over the clear-cut areas of the northwest North American forests. This is really powerful stuff.
Who's taking the lead on this?

Michael McRae confesses to owning an insatiable appetite for roads less traveled, an appetite born of "a nomadic upbringing as a military brat, my romanticism, and the counterculture ethic of the sixties." His forays to out-of-the-way corners of Africa, Asia, and South America have yielded this entertaining collection of nature-travel journalism. One moment finds him inside the welcome sanctuary of the writer Isak Dinesen's Kenyan plantation, quarters that are quite suddenly overrun by flashbulb-snapping American visitors. Next, he's in Bwindi, Uganda, a mountain reserve also called The Impenetrable Forest that, like all tropical woodlands, is imperiled by international development. For my money, the best piece in the book is "Prisoners of Zuulchin," a humorous but never patronizing recollection of a sometimes-hellish excursion into the Gobi Desert under the care of Mongolia's state travel bureau.

Book Description
Scottie, Tay, Amanda, and Bellathey're an angsty artist's daughter, an indie tomboy, a trust-fund princess, and a new-age yoga goddess. Their friendship totally defies the odds, yet last year, fate (and a whole lot of yarn) brought them together. As the Chicks with Sticks, they survived plenty of knitty friendship dramas. Now they're as solid as a fisherman's sweater. Or are they? As the Chicks begin their second year together, their tight circle faces its biggest challenge yet: boys.
Another fast, fun, and fresh story, accessorized with four hip new projects for people of all experience levels, this will be a hit in both knitting and reading circles.

Chicks with Sticks (It's a Purl Thing).......2007-04-06
Wow, I think that this book has a Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants feel to it, without being too random.
One girl, whose aunt has just died, takes up knitting as a way to calm down. It helps her and her best friend get close again, and they even make new friends.
I don't really know what else to say about this book, except it was cute and really interesting. Although it seemed kind of corny, since I don't think very many girls like that would start knitting, but overall it was fun and light.
Absolutely Amazing.......2007-03-01
THis was absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. I knit so I do think it helps to understand the book abit better. I do think the first one is more interesting though. But other than that, aweseome book!
Even better than the first!.......2007-01-18
I loved it! Elizabeth Lenhard is obviously a fellow knitter and spins a wonderful story along with knitting joys and frustrations and characters that you really care about.
I really enjoyed this book!.......2006-12-30
For all those girl (and guy) knitters out there (and wannabe knitters, and people who aren't interested in knitting at all) this is the book for you! It's about a bond that is created between four very different girls through knitting. They went through friendship troubles, yet seemed to patch up their holes using knitting as a soother and calmer. I can't wait to read the sequel! I am a knitter, and enjoyed how Elizabeth used knitting terms to label each chapter. It was a lighthearted book that sent laughs and humor in each chapter! I would wholeheartedly reccomend this book to everyone!
Whitty and Knitty.......2006-09-19
Scottie is a 16-year-old girl who lives in present-day Chicago. Her life is changing but Scottie just wants everything to be back to the way it was. Her best friend suddenly attracts boys, new pouplar friends, and invations to parties Scottie would never imagine beung invited to. Her favorite aunt dies suddenly and her mom becomes "an It girl of Chicago's art world". Scottie even has trouble sleeping through the night now. Shure sleeping through a 10 o'clock and 4 o'clock train might seem impossible but Scottie did it for thirteen years. Well, you can't rewind time and Scottie becomes misserable. Then late one night when Scottie is rummaging through her purse(the one she hasn't touched since the funeral) and finds a tangled mass of yellow yarn wrapped around two knitting kneedles. She remembers her great-aunt teaching her how to knit at the funeral. Scottie struggles at first with the kneedles the begins to knit smoothly. She does one row, then another, and another. The steady click of medal kneedles calmed her down and she instsantly fell in love with knitting. Then she discovers KnitWit, a small knitting shop down town. The owner befriends her and helps Scottie learn many things, form purling to how to deal with her mother. At knitWit Scottie is reunited with Amanda and they become best friends again. She also meets Bella and Tay, two girls who also go to her school but she would never socialy interact with each other. The foursome become close friends. They even knit togather at the lunch table sometines.
But as always problebs beegin to occur. Tay and Amanda have crushes on two differnt boys and they are not sure how htey will take the "knitting thing". Bella was home schooled by her parents untill high school, so she strictly obeys their laws, untill one day she realizes what she is missing by being so overly obedient. Scottie's mom dosen't see her, rather she looks through her and Scottie is sick of it. Togather the girls try to resolve each others personal problems but like always, things don't go as planned, or stiched.

Book Description

Book Description
Focusing on one of the most productive areas of modern chemical research, this text describes the molecular-level mechanisms of elementary chemical reactions and presents the contributions of molecular beam and laser techniques. The authors assume a basic familiarity with physical chemistry
as they guide the reader from well-known principles to state-of-the-art research results. The goal is an understanding of chemical reactivity and physical rate processes, from the fundamental, microscopic point of view, with emphasis on phenomena and their conceptual interpretation rather than the
details of experimental techniques or theories. The authors have collaborated over many years and are the co-authors of the precursor volume Molecular Reaction Dynamics (Oxford University Press, 1974). This completely new work discusses the following topics: dynamics of molecular collisions;
intermolecular potentials and potential energy surfaces; molecular and ion beam scattering; "direct" versus "complex" modes of reaction; reagent state selection and product analysis; energy partitioning and surprisal analysis; photofragmentation and multiphoton dissociation; electronic, vibrational,
and rotational energy transfer; chemical lasers and laser chemistry; Van der Waals molecules and clusters; and stereospecific dynamics. An appropriate text for advanced courses in kinetics, physical chemistry or chemical physics, and also a timely reference source, Molecular Reaction Dynamics and
Chemical Reactivity presents both fundamental principles and the latest developments in this rapidly advancing field.
Book Description
In his first book ever, the father of string theory reinvents our concept of the known universe and mans unique place within it. The beginning of the 21st century is a watershed in modern science, a time that will forever change our understanding of the universe, Leonard Susskind contends. Several decades ago, Susskind introduced the revolutionary concept of string theory to the world of physical science. In doing so, he inspired a generation of physicists who believed that the theory would uniquely predict the properties of our universe. Now, in his first book ever, Susskind argues that the very idea of such an elegant theory no longer suits our understanding of the universe, and that our narrow 20th-century view of a unique universe will have to give way to the much broader concept of a gigantic cosmic landscapea megaverse, pregnant with new possibilities. His other contributions to physics are too numerous to mention, but his recent victory in an argument with Stephen Hawking over the nature of black holes made headlines everywhere.

The Problem With Math.......2007-09-26
Susskind, along with many other, such as Randall Warped Passages: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe's Hidden Dimensions makes a serious mistake in leaping to the conclusion that reality corresponds to his mathematical models. Along with other string theorists, they assume that if the math they use to build their models contains some number of additional dimensions, then the real world must contain those dimensions. I see this in much of the literature, including, for example Woit Not Even Wrong: The Failure of String Theory And the Search for Unity in Physical Law who debunks string theory, but nevertheless seems to accept the idea that if the math contains extra dimensions, reality must also contain those extra dimensions. Susskind really goes off the deep end with this.
A mathematical model is just that - a model. It is the best math we can construct at this point in time to describe the reality we are trying to model. It is not the reality itself. If the string theorists are successful in constructing a model that includes six or seven tiny dimensions, that does not mean that those dimensions actually exist. All it means is that the best model we can currently construct has to include those dimensions in the math. We must remember that much more math will come along. Someday, we may have a math that describes the same reality without the additional dimensions.
That said, if the string theorists can make a prediction that absolutely, positively depends upon those extra dimensions and if that prediction is confirmed by experimental results, then they may have a case. So far, the string theorists have failed utterly to make such a prediction. Even here, a different math may come along. The night is young.
As good as it gets!.......2007-08-27
TCL is popular science writing of the first order: a fascinating, informative, and highly entertaining tour of what rate as some of the most abstruse theories ever conceived. In Susskind's own words (p. 348):
"My main purpose in wiriting this book is not primarily to convince the reader of my own point of view; scientific arguments are best fought on the pages of technical journals and the blackboards of seminar rooms. My purpose is to explain the struggle of ideas that is about to take front-and-center place in the mainstream of science so that ordinary readers can follow the ideas as they unfold and experience the drama and excitement that I feel."
I can heap no greater praise on Susskind than to say that TCL brilliantly achieves his purpose. It is one of the finest pieces of popular science writing that I have ever read. Somewhere in this book Susskind alludes to another book he hopes to write one day. Here's very much hoping he directs that (and other) future efforts to a non-specialist readership. It is very much to the benefit of science and the public when scientists translate their work for the edification of non-scientists. Kudos to Susskind for joining the ranks of the most able popularizers!
Plain English, finally!.......2007-05-07
Choice book, great theorist writes in plain English..I have read 3 times, always something new!
Why is there Something rather than Nothing?.......2007-01-30
Very illuminative book in understanding the present state of the relevant physics and cosmology.
Really, we have no need of intelligent design theory if progress in science goes on.
Although the book is full of analogies and slogans instead of formulas, it provides a good overview of physics and cosmology.
The book is written in a lively way and thought provoking with challenging concepts.
Not Convincing .......2007-01-21
I'm not a physicist, but I could say that my interest in science stemmed from my background as an Engineer in electronics. And no need to go over the scientific aspects mentioned in the book since others have done a good job. Yet, I was surprised at a scientist, or rather the father of the String Theory, and quite knowledgeable in Quantum Mechanics, would treat man as a separate being from the universe. When we say that the universe is fine tuned to suite us, who is "us"? Aren't we a part of this universe in quantum physics perspective? And although I liked his scientific analogy a great deal and I learned a lot, not to say that I completely understood it, but his Anthropic views and conclusions threw me off balance. I'm sure that he has much more explaining to do before he could come to this conclusion. But generally speaking; if you are interested in science of quantum physics, it is a page-turner and the writer's ability to bring the complexities of this field to a layman's lever was amazing. And one more thing; the title was misleading when the writer used the word "illusion" in juxtaposition with"intelligent design"

woohoo, first review, and "intriguing book".......2000-04-26
On the whole, I can't say I didn't enjoy it, but I had to read various selection of it for my English Honors class (I'm a sophomore in high school) There are some well known essays, some very obscure titles as well. It was interesting, but I wouldnt reccomend it as a recreational reading.
