5 out of 5 stars A simply astounding, rich survey of all the creatures which live in the region.......2006-03-03

Wild Belfast: On Safari In The City is an amazing book: a city guide which covers all the wildlife of the city, from insects to birds and mammals. From inner city parks and gardens to adjacent area meadows, wetlands and woods, Wild Belfast offers a simply astounding, rich survey of all the creatures which live in the region - and how best to see them. Packed with color photos and natural history, this is one of the most amazing books available - we can only hope other urban areas will receive such insights. Very highly recommended indeed; even if you never visit Belfast and know little of the area, but are passionate about wildlife and natural history.

3 out of 5 stars Great guide for 2003... but now outdated.......2007-02-08

This book must've been great back in 2003 but many of the restaurants they list have gone out of business or moved. There are also many amazing vegetarian restaurants that have opened since 2003 that are not listed like Kung Food in San Diego. This book is in serious need of an update.

But it's hard to feel special when you've spent your life shuffled from one foster home to another. And now that she's at the East Tennessee Children's Home, Maddie feels even less special.

She longs for a place to call home. She even has a "book of houses" in which she glues pictures of places she'd like to live. Then one day, a new girl, Murphy, shows up at the Home armed with tales about exotic travels, being able tot fly, and boys who recite poetry to wild horses. When Murphy offers Maddie something she has never had before, Maddie begins to wonder if she has finally found someone who feels like home.

Where I'd Like To Be is a great book by Frances O'Roark Dowell. It is about a girl named Maddie who lives in an orphange and keeps to herself. She hardly tells anyone her secrets especially about her scrapbook of dreams. Her scrapbook contains magazine clippings of things she wishes she had like a big house, dogs, etc. One day her scrapbook is revealed. One of the boys at the orphange becomes friends with Maddie. Eventually she trusts him enough to tell him about the scrapbook and dreams. This is a heart-warming book that you should read. To find out what happens to Maddie read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A review of Where I'd Like To Be.......2006-02-04

What if when you were a baby, a ghost saved your life? Well, according to Granny Lane, that's what happened to 11 year old Maddie. She longs for a family and a place to call home and feels that it's hopeless. After all, who adopts an 11 year old? But maybe it wasn't as hopeless as she thought.
Maddie may seem a normal kid to you, she goes to school, has great friends, is in after-school activities, but then you go to her home. She has shared a room with people who come and go as often, it seems, as the seasons. Maddie lives at the East Tennessee Children's Home. She wants a home so badly she has a "book of houses" and a "book of people." Throughout the book she and her friends find that they are all a family, a strange one, but a family none the less.
Where I'd Like To Be, is a book that all people should read for a heart warming tale. I think what I liked best is that you can almost feel each character's emotions as they change. I think anyone who likes a story that makes you glad for what you've got, should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Really Interesting Book.......2005-03-20

Great book, especially for young girls in their search for self. This book surely must be based, at least in part, on some observations from East Tennessee Christian Home in Elizabethton, Tennessee because the author has cited several times East Tennessee Children's Home (where the novel is set), as well as Allen Avenue (the actual location of The Home), and Elizabethton, Tennessee (the city in which the novel is set). I certainly encourage young girls to read the book, as well as their parents. I think it will lead to more understanding on both sides.

          Book Description

Why everything we think about fundamental physical laws needs to change, and why the greatest mysteries of physics are not at the ends of the universe but as close as the nearest ice cube or grain of salt.

Not since Richard Feynman has a Nobel Prize-winning physicist written with as much panache as Robert Laughlin does in this revelatory and essential book. Laughlin proposes nothing less than a new way of understanding fundamental laws of science. In this age of superstring theories and Big-Bang cosmology, we're used to thinking of the unknown as being impossibly distant from our everyday lives. The edges of science, we're told, lie in the first nanofraction of a second of the Universe's existence, or else in realms so small that they can't be glimpsed even by the most sophisticated experimental techniques. But we haven't reached the end of science, Laughlin argues-only the end of reductionist thinking. If we consider the world of emergent properties instead, suddenly the deepest mysteries are as close as the nearest ice cube or grain of salt. And he goes farther: the most fundamental laws of physics-such as Newton's laws of motion and quantum mechanics -are in fact emergent. They are properties of large assemblages of matter, and when their exactness is examined too closely, it vanishes into nothing.

A Different Universe takes us into a universe where the vacuum of space has to be considered a kind of solid matter, where sound has quantized particles just like those of light, where there are many phases of matter, not just three, and where metal resembles a liquid while superfluid helium is more like a solid. It is a universe teeming with natural phenomena still to be discovered. This is a truly mind-altering book that shows readers a surprising, exquisitely beautiful and mysterious new world.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Less than meets the eye.......2007-01-05

Emergence is an important concept, physically and philosophically, and Dr. Laughlin makes the case intrigingly, if not persuasively. His anecdotal style obscures rather than clarifies his arguments.

The importance of this book may come when future physicists determine whether Laughlin's assessment of the future of physics is the work of a sage prophet, or that of an overcautious member of the scientific establishment. I can predict (having no reputation to risk) that when someone writes a collection of predictions that failed to come true, Laughlin's critique will rank with the 1900 assertion that the Patent Office had outlived its usefullness since everything had already been invented.

4 out of 5 stars Read it for the Science.......2006-12-21

There are some deep insights and ideas that are very well explained. The concept of emergence, and a truly different interpretation of the structure of space-time based on analogies with the structure of materials
are very well elucidated. That part is great. However the book is riddled with personal anecdotes which are intended to be funny ( kind of Dick Feynman wannebe), but somehow end up being weak if not entirely non-sequitor. But don't let that stop you. Not all Physicist can be as entertaining as Feynman - read the book for the science !

          4 out of 5 stars Emergence disguised.......2006-11-20

I agree with most of your reviewers--Laughlin's book is not Nobel
stuff. But give a point. It shows a laid back theorist who has
earned his prize already, and is easing into another perhaps more
important area of physics. In amongst his vignettes of personal
life he is pointing ahead in the understanding of our cosmos.

All "beyond physics" scientific progress emphasizes emergence.
Take for instance the guidance of DNA in evolution. I would in-
clude also the precise definition of the forces of nature. Any-
body out there with ideas to help this concept along?

          1 out of 5 stars Awful........2006-07-31

'A Different Universe' really is a complete waste of time.
Most of the anecdotes are dull. The book has no direction,
and you can find all of the 'science' and more in the
three and a half page article:
Laughlin and Pines, PNAS vol. 97 pp.28-31 (2000)

          5 out of 5 stars Accessible revelations.......2006-03-16

This book is quite a sport in the "popular" science arena. It opens with the premise that you may be of sound mind (as opposed to those authors who can barely contain their plodding indulgence of the great unwashed) and perhaps more than a little unfamiliar with physics (as opposed to writers who suppose you've got at least some basics in quantum theories or you wouldn't've bought it). Although Laughlin certainly doesn't shy away from a quantity of daunting scientific theories, discoveries, inventions that are conundrums even for scientists, he manages to make them comprehensible with anecdotal illustrations and/or similes. Most importantly, however, the joie de vive that propelled the author into his current career is the heart of this piece. The vibrant cosmos is lovingly examined here. Denial and complacency are vigorously challenged. The profound wonder of the real world is refreshed and fortified by "A Different Universe." Reminding us that truth (though it may be on the move and relative), is always superior to fiction.
This won't be the last time I'll read it.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-08-17

I just finished Wonderful Fool by Shusaku Endo, the fifth novel I have read by him. Like the others, this one was outstanding. He wrote very skillfully and deeply perceptively about human nature. Endo always chooses topics, it seems, which are uncomfortable, which draw up against the reader's "flesh" or that part of them that is worldly and selfish at the expense of others' wellbeing. (As a Japanese too he chooses topics which are particularly unflattering for the Japanese people like the crucifixtions of Portugese missionaries in Silence, the experimentation on POWs in The Sea and Poison, and the pornography industry and sex trade in Scandal. In Wonderful Fool his readers see some of the gangs, spend time with the prostitutes, and go around the slums of Tokyo with a hitman, but all as seen from a holy heart of love, it seems clear to me. Endo is not content to remain on the surface of things- his art is nobler than that and his love more burning than that. He brings his reader with him to touch the nerves that run so deep they cross beyond his cultural moment to the universal heart of mankind.

His characters always act from weakness and sorrow and struggle and failure. Gaston, the socially inept, the ugly, the slow-minded, reaching out to Japan with the most powerful thing in the world, love, but covered in a ball of rags.

Like Scandal this novel contained characters deeply effected by warcrimes that those close to them had participated in. The hitman Endo (Endo likes to make the criminal characters reflect identity with him in some way in some of his novels, naming the hitman Endo or making the main character of Scandal a Christian writer, like Endo, of a Life of Christ.) turns to a life of hatred and coldblooded murder when faced with his brother's having carried out orders to burn the occupants of a village and the brother's subsequent framing by his commanding officers. Gaston persistantly, doggedly, beyond all civil tepid-ity, urges Endo from a position of weakness not to go through with his plot of revenge on the officers. Gaston, despite his outer weakness and failure, is a real man, as the character Takamori discerns, because he takes a stand for the right thing despite his weaknesses that he could have so easily taken as excuses not to do what he should. It is integrity to the gospel that Endo has witnessed, bears witness to, keeps within himself. The "fool" is wonderful for this integrity, this sacred obedience, this longsuffering love, which endures blows and persecutions by the ones he is trieing to help, and which has takes the courage to recognize that he can and must help, that he must, despite all his weakness and absurdity in the eyes of the world, come to Japan for love. Hallelujah!

Endo ends by tieing Gaston's mysterious end into the early Japanese story, "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter."

Endo's novel is a marvelously winning and affecting story about the wanderings of a saintly Frenchman (and descendant of Napoleon) through the mean streets of post-war Tokyo.

You have maybe met someone like Gaston Bonaparte? The sort of man who apologizes when you step on his foot; who'd rather be cheated than think someone dishonest. Who is, naturally, held in a sort of weary pity by his family and in complete scorn by almost anyone else.

Endo addresses in this novel what it is that world values and what it does to a man who who is apart from those values. While the rest of the world cannily pursues it's own ends (survival, or better, and reproduction) Gaston is --quite unintentionally--pursuing that proffession which is revered in name but entirely held in contempt in actual practice. Gaston is maybe not a man who is good for much, certainly not in the world's eyes -but sainthood has ever been the most egalitarian of vocations.

There is a powerful case made for man's free will implicitly in this, but also in the novel's character, Endo, who is the opposite and the reflection of Gaston. He too though, is pursuing his end regardless of even himself -to the extent of refusing to take antibiotics for a tuberculosis infected lung.

Perhaps the novel's most poignant theme is it's message that even at our most debased and broken, God has not forgotten or given up on us. Endo's illustration of this is original and startling; Gaston chooses to follow after Endo at a cost and in a way that could only be called insane by anyone the world would call sane.

Endo's writing is simple and elegant and executed in an exciting, almost cinematic manner. It keeps the reader turning the pages through the book's all too short duration. If I had to say something critical about this book, I might mention that the writing is not as smooth as some of Endo's later works -it lacks subtlety at moments and there are plot possibilites which are raised and not pursued. That is just nothing though, to the whole of how wonderful this book really is.

I first read Wonderful Fool in a high school English class, it was out of print so my teacher photocopied 60 copies of the entire book, and it was wel worth it. I loved both the story and the way it was told, with vivid colors and moods. Highly recommended

Didn't Mr Endo pass away in 1996?

5 out of 5 stars This was a great story by one of Japan's finest writers.......1999-10-28

Being a large fan of Shusaku Endo, when I saw this book with an interesting title, I decided to read it. I was very happily surprised. Not only is this excellently written story a very moving tale, but it is often very funny. Endo has used his talent to tell the story of an often foolish man named Gaston Bonaparte, a man with a passion for Japan. He travels to Japan and stays with a small Japanese family. While his old pen pal, the only son of the family, is very supportive of him, the only daughter does not like him at all. Things get even worse when he is abducted by an angry gangster, and eventually forced to make the greatest sacrifice of all. If you like dramatic, moving, and funny stories, make sure you read this one.
