5 out of 5 stars Just What is Says.......2005-09-02

This book is everything I look for in a travel book; concise, useful info and it has good color photos and maps. The content is well organized and it also gives useful tips that I wouldnt normally think of, such as catching Mont St. Michel bay in winter during bird migration season.

HIGHLY recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for France.......2001-10-21

We used this book to supplement a two month trip to France. It provides information that you will not find in other guide books and if you are used to mixing nature with culture, then it is a must to have along. We saw things we would never have seen, but for having this book. Places that one might think are insignificant take on added importance and meaning. We also used Wild Italy in Italy. Note that these books are not the only travel books you should have in France and Italy. They supplement your other travel books.

5 out of 5 stars Forget Paris - Go Wild and Wonderful.......2001-03-22

Okay, spend a few days in Paris, and then when the crowds, the traffic and the little dogs overwhelm you, get out your copy of Wild France and seek some serenity. Packed with information, this reliable, portable and well-organized guide to wilderness areas of France is valuable for planning your trip and contains many evocative color photos to help you remember your adventures when you get back home. The book divides France into nine natural regions and suggests the best wild habitats to visit in each one. The sections are written by different experts, with insider views on the local environments. Easy-to-read maps at appropriate scales help you find your destination by car or public transit and then hike, bike, ride or row to viewpoints. In addition to the color photos, there are detailed line drawings of special trees, plants, birds and animals that you may encounter. Included are addresses, phone numbers and websites of tourist offices, park offices, museums and outdoor adventure firms, plus suggested hotels and camp sites. Our favorite walk: through the Massif de Ste. Baume in October, walking out of farmland into open oak woodland, and then into the deep shade and silence of an ancient European forest of oak, beech, holly and yew, meeting an occasional family picking wild mushrooms, climbing higher and higher on a path that pilgrims - including popes, saints and kings - had taken for almost two millennia.

Too bad this is out of print. Great way to find the natural beauty of France. Lots of information that we just didn't find in other guide books. If you are used to mixing culture with nature, then get this book for the nature.

    Book Description

A result of collaboration between the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) and CAB INTERNATIONAL sponsored by the Commission of the European Union, this two-volume set contains data sheets and illustrations on pests of quarantine significance for Europe and the Mediterranean region. Coverage extends to insects, mites, fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, and parasitic plants. The volumes also include organisms found outside Europe and the Mediterranean that present a risk to the region, as well as those which are present but have restricted distribution and are subject to phytosanitary controls. All 188 data sheets from the first edition have been revised, some data sheets covering groups of similar organisms have been split up, and 56 new sheets have been added, resulting in a total of 300 data sheets. This set represents the definitive reference source, not only for those with specific interests in plant quarantines, but also for all concerned with pest management.

      5 out of 5 stars Pure Gold.......2005-05-12

This book, along with The Cave of Time, made everybody my age in the early eigties want to choose their own adventure, either in this series or any of the other clones that it brought about. What UFO 54-40 teaches us is the blatant futility of aspiring for a perfect or utopian society unless we as a people learn to collectively cheat and read ahead in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Kidnapped by aliens!.......2005-04-01

You were aboard a supersonic jet, going from New York to Paris, when a huge, gleaming white cylinder shoots out of the clouds. The next thing you know you are inside the spaceship the Rakma, a captive of the U-TY, masters of the space craft.
Will you cooperate, pretend to cooperate or try to escape? What you decide to do might free you or enslave you for life. This Choose Your Own Adventure book seems a tad more logical. Choices sometimes result in major changes. The story line is interesting and the artwork by Paul Granger is cool. There is even a layout of the spaceship. The character of Kim Lee is even cute! One of the better of the series.

5 out of 5 stars CYOA done right.......2004-07-27

This is one of the few CYOA books that I felt deserved special attention. You learn and discover new things with every choice made, and things don't change willy-nilly just because you went left instead of right. What I mean here is the cause doesn't changes, only the effect. The endings are also concrete and mostly void of the abstract, questionable type. Take a look inside the ufo!

5 out of 5 stars Rules are made to be broken.......2003-10-17

I was in third grade when I stumbled upon my teacher's (Mrs. Smith) copy of this book in our classroom. It was the first time I had ever seen a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book. I was enthralled from the get go. As a young child, the ability to choose your path through the story made reading more immediately interactive (as video games purport to be today) and allowed someone (me) with a very low level of patience and attention span to learn to love to read. Above this, there is one very interesting fact about this book. There is an ending that cannot be reached by following the very foundational rules of the book. It must either be found on accident (by turning to the wrong page) or by systematically breaking down the book's paths and realizing one page has no connection to any of the others. It seems very elementary to anyone of any age and experience today, but it struck home to me then a very important lesson - follow your own path, break rules, don't accept anything as fact, dance to the beat of your own drum. Pretty empowering thing to learn from such a seemingly innocuous book huh?

5 out of 5 stars One of Edward Packard's best CYOA books.......2003-05-28

I used to love these books as a kid, and even though invariably thought that those by Edward Packard were the best. This was my third favorite book, behind two other Edward Packard CYOA books Hyperspace and Survival At Sea. This book is only book in the series that also features a unique "special ending" that cannot be encountered through normal decision making. Can you stumble upon paradise?? Get the book to find out!

Recommended for anybody who enjoys the Choose Your Own Adventure genre, and especially for kids who enjoy science fiction.

Few writers distinguish themselves by their ability to write about complicated, even obscure topics clearly and engagingly. James Gleick, a former science writer for the New York Times, resides in this exclusive category. In Chaos, he takes on the job of depicting the first years of the study of chaos--the seemingly random patterns that characterize many natural phenomena.

This is not a purely technical book. Instead, it focuses as much on the scientists studying chaos as on the chaos itself. In the pages of Gleick's book, the reader meets dozens of extraordinary and eccentric people. For instance, Mitchell Feigenbaum, who constructed and regulated his life by a 26-hour clock and watched his waking hours come in and out of phase with those of his coworkers at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

As for chaos itself, Gleick does an outstanding job of explaining the thought processes and investigative techniques that researchers bring to bear on chaos problems. Rather than attempt to explain Julia sets, Lorenz attractors, and the Mandelbrot Set with gigantically complicated equations, Chaos relies on sketches, photographs, and Gleick's wonderful descriptive prose.

4 out of 5 stars A "must" if you strive to understand the mystery of the universe.......2007-09-07

No, this book won't change your life or anything, but if you're an enthusiastic reader of lay science books, like me, it's a must read. Gleick's style can get dense and repetitive at times, but the concepts that he is conveying are slippery, at best. It's hard to get an intellectual bead on them. So the repetition is appropriate.

And if you've ever wondered how in the universe order could evolve out of chaos, this book gives us a peak at the best clues there are to what lies behind the kimono.

This is another excellent book from Gleick, surely one of the best writers alive right now.

4 out of 5 stars An engaging and readable introduction to Chaos Theory.......2007-03-29

Mathmeticians, physicists, and others that unlike me did not find college level calculus challenging may be slightly disappointed with this book. There are no real equations for the Mandelbrot Set on the cover or any of the other areas of the discipline that are illustrated so well throughout the book. I have to say that the book was extremely interesting and difficult to put down. The visual presentation rather than equations seemed effective to me and Gleick is a very good science writer. There is possibly no other book that has stirred interest in this subject as well as this book for the layman in its 20 years. If you're not disappointed that you won't need a calculator to read this, I think you would appreciate the explanations for this new perspective on physics, meterology, biology, geology and math. I think of this book many times when I see alluvial flow patterns in the sand, the veination of leaves, mammotous clouds. It's an eye opener to part of the world that you may not perceive or begin to understand without reading this book.

                    5 out of 5 stars A pop-science take on Chaos.......2007-03-12

Is Chaos theory a new title? Or a catchy name tacked on to the science explained by non-linear math? Either way, James Gleick explains the emergence of a new non-mainstream science movement. Like most of his pop science work, Gleick delves into the history, personalities and impacts of the science, as opposed to the in depth mathematics behind it. Taken as that, it's a worthy book that meets it's goals - documenting what might have been the beginning of a great scientific revolution.

4 out of 5 stars Whoa! What happened here?.......2007-02-24

Chaos is as great a science book as it gets outside of some of the better than your average undergrad science textbooks; i'm talking about the good textbooks like "Project Physics Course" or Morris Kline's "Calculus". As noted by some who obviously have pride in knowing the real thing, these types of books are not the real thing; the real question is 'are they worth anything?' Yes! These general science books that are good general science books are philosophy books.

This Chaos theory book has been ranked pretty highly for its philosophizing as far as I can tell. To say the least, this is where my shock at contemporary supposedly 'intellectuals' goes up! James Gliek goes on and on(he even has a whole chapter called "Revolution" in the book) about how Chaos theory is a new science(o.k. it is), and that this new science raises questions about scientific method; to say the least, if chaos theory challenges you on scientific method, then your already dead in the water as far as an understanding of science and its methods are concerned! In fact, humanity takes steps backwards if a book that argues this stance is so popular with the 'intellectual' community. Ernst Casserir and Jacob Bronowski way back in the stone ages of the 1900's had all this figured out. Jacob Bronowski's books were published because his articles were so popular! What happened?

What happened is a new generation was born every fifteen to twenty years, and they just learned what they needed to.

Getting back to James Gliek's 'Chaos', he talks about how Chaos theory blows up the 'reductionist' views of science. Chaos theory is somehow more holistic than previous sciences. Never mind how he never mentions how Maxwell's electromagnetism 'combines' light with electricity; quantum mechanics derives chemistry, and General Relativity derives newtonian mechanics, he never even mentions how the abstract nature of mathematics works. Mathematics is an abstraction(not the popular notions of empty and vagueness); abstraction is the common form that any set of similar structures can take on; the famous example is how a couple of oranges and apples are two concrete examples of the common form of the number two. Abstraction is a unification; all of mathematics and science concepts are such unifications at one time or another. A strange attractor does not break this scientific methodology; it is as much an abstraction as any scientific concept.

Scientists seem to have lost track of all this including all these transhumanists who just happen to be nanotechnologists

                                    Book Description

Few writers distinguish themselves by their ability to write about complicated, even obscure topics clearly and engagingly. James Gleick, former science writer for The New York Times, resides in this exclusive category. In Chaos, he takes on the job of depicting the first years of the study of chaos - the seemingly random patterns that characterize many natural phenomena. This is not a purely techinical book. Instead, it focuses as much on scientists studying events as chaos itself. Listeners will meet dozens of extraordinary and eccentric people in this learned but highly accessible book.

In Shona Ramaya's tough, lyrical, and ironic stories of a globalized India, pop culture and history fuse

When you bring on the rain, everything changes, my grandmother had said. It's not the same place anymore. The rain takes over.

Set in a globalized community of merging cultures, Operation Monsoon offers an India where Hindu epics are broadcast as soap operas and kidney donations have supplanted reincarnation. These intricate, multilayered accounts show how people use stories to make sense of their lives in an incomprehensible world. A girl romanticizes about a distant cousin, a terrorist in exile, amid the intoxicating Calcutta monsoons. A crippled woman runs a matchmaking agency on the Internet. An IT consultant finds himself on a strange journey in America as he enters the shadow world of "bodyshopping."

Shona Ramaya, praised by Cosmopolitan as a "born storyteller" and by Mira Nair as a writer who "has the rare talent of knowing her characters so well that when you finish the book, you feel they have spoken to you," presents an India of radical transitions, exploring junctures where history or myth cross paths with contemporary events.

I enjoyed this collection immensely. The stories are not quite short--about 50 pages each, more like novellas--and it works well that way. The characters are beautifully developed. I could visualize them vividly. The twists in the plot kept me turning the pages. And the plots are rich and satisfying. I went to the author's book reading, and loved it.

5 out of 5 stars This book was fabulous.......2003-09-23

As a first generation American of Indian descent, I found myself totally engaged by the stories in this book. The way Shona Ramaya describes people and events took me back again and again to many childhood memories. I could see the characters, their expressions, I could hear them talking to one another, and I was once again reminded what a rich culture and heritage I come from. I could not put the book down until I was done reading it cover to cover.

The writing is superb! The stories are surreal, yet vibrate with the reality of surviving in an ever-changing world! One of the best books I've read in the last five years.

How come she is not well known? I want to read all her other books. She is an amazing writer! I recommend this book to all who want to read something that will change the way they think about things.

The characters in Shona Ramaya's collection of short fiction 'Operation Monsoon' inhabit the global village forecast by Marshall McLuhan and otherwriters of the 1960s. In these superbly realized stories, modern technology touches the lives of each character. A petulant expatriate Indian programmer employed in the United States attempts to control his little brother, half a
world away, by badgering emails. The wonders of the world wide web provide a business opportunity for a crippled Indian woman, considered "unmarriageable" by her family. A tea-stall boy is revealed to be computer savvy; street vendors and illiterate maids know about email and discuss "dot.coms."
Technology enables these characters to inhabit a shrinking world where a confidence revealed in India results in shocked anger in the U.S. Family feuds between brother and sister fly through cyber space between San Jose and Calcutta.
Modernity at once simplifies and complicates the lives of the characters described. In the United States, we may debate: is it required, or even right, to donate one's kidney to save a life? In India the question becomes: What if one sells this living organ? Is this a noble sacrifice, or a foolish commercial transaction? Aside from issues of modernity, individuals must struggle with age old questions of responsibility. What are the obligations of family in the face of international justice? If your cousin is a terrorist, what crime do you commit if you help him evade the law?
Ramaya deftly creates intricate moral mazes for her vividly realized characters and wisely refrains from providing easy answers. She knows the brutalities of twenty first century life. A nightmare that comes true for one character is that she may have aided and abetted men who sold village girls to brothels in Nepal. The terrorist of the title story is himself broken by state brutality. Yet there is wit in these stories as well. It flows in the emails which connect families separated by oceans and continents and shows in the complex characters we meet. One of Ramaya's more witty creations is an urbane Jesuit priest with a fondness for single malt scotch and exquisite silk shirts. Yet he too is a rounded, complete human being; we realize he is drawn to India by private family sorrows.
Ramaya's skill as an author shows in her sure grasp of several genres. In the story "Re:Mohit" she capably extends the epistolary tradition by creating a story told only in email. The detective story form for the story "The Matchmakers" provides a frame for a probing analysis of attitudes towards women and an examination of how a capable, accomplished woman cripples herself by accepting others' attitudes. The title story, "Operation Monsoon", is at once a reflexive fiction--the title comes from a book within the book--and also a complex meditation on terror and the use of terror by individuals and the state.
Ramaya is at home in many different worlds, and her sense of setting is flawless. Urban Calcutta is as vivid as the room in which one sits reading. Village life in rural India is equally well realized, as is the over chilled air of a hotel in Las Vegas where we find a convention of American academics pontificating on a "Third World" they neither know nor understand.
These are first rate stories: accomplished, absorbing, thoughtful and implicitly philosophical. They can be read as entertainments alone, but reward deeper examination and fulfill the highest directive of art: to hold a mirror up to our rapidly changing world; to illumine the deeper recesses of the mazelike human heart.
