A Guide to Nature in Winter is an un paralleled introduction to the wintertime natural world. Nature is never dormant: on close observation, a silent, snow- blanketed winter landscape reveals itself as the setting for intense and purposeful activity in the plant and animal worlds. Because natural activity is greatly simplified in winter, though, it is the ideal season to introduce oneself to the complex series of relationships that tie the natural world together.
Perhaps this volume is better described as eight comprehensive field guides in one. Donald Stokes covers thoroughly the eight prominent aspects of winter most easily studied in the field: winter weeds, snow crystals, wintering trees, evidence of in sects, birds and abandoned nests, winter mushrooms, tracks in the snow, and ever green plants. For each topic, he provides a general introduction, a key to field identification of items within the topic, and a natural history description of each item (arranged alphabetically, by common name).
The 485 stunning pen-and-ink drawings that grace these pages make accurate field identification easy and convey a feeling for nature in its entirety. A Guide to Nature in Winter will inform and entertain nature lovers, winter walkers, cross-country skiers, campers, birdwatchers, armchair naturalists - in short, everyone interested in understanding the marvels held by nature in winter. The combination of an expertly organized text and splendid illustrations enables readers to see, clearly and piercingly, the winter landscape as a bountiful whole.
Donald Stokes is a naturalist and teacher. Deborah Prince is a freelance artist. Both live in Massachusetts.

Product Description
The charming color illustrations by Vicky Kitanov are based on the gumnut creations by May Gibbs. Ms Gibbs, who moved from England to Australia when she was a young child, created a mythology of the Australian bush with her little gumnut children and the Banskia man. She used native Australian flora and fauna in her pictures. The pictures are reminiscent of the Root Children books. This is a children's counting book. About 8.5 inches tall by 10.5 wide, 24 pages, illustrated endpapers.

REVIEW FROM TRAVELWRITER MARKETLETTER.......1999-06-18
This is the review that appeared in TravelWriter MarketLetter that goes to travel writers all over the world...
"The Table of Contents for this book is very reader-friendly. Under each chapter heading are all of the chapter's subheads, with page numbers, so if you want to reread the paragraph on seasickness, for example, you find it under Chapter 2, page 35, and find it quickly. The first several chapters tell the many differences between sailing on a small ship and a large one, discuss costs, things to do, places small ships can go, and the many questions the reader might have about small ships. There's a chapter on life aboard a small ship, with detailed descriptions, then one on saving money on cruises with various ploys, and a chapter on ship profiles which takes up more than half the book describing more than 200 ships. The final two chapters are about barge cruising on canals, and sailing in small romantic schooners. It's all good, juicy writing, even if your cruise is not imminent. But if you are about to take a cruise, it will save you money, prepare you, and insure that you have fun."
Small ships that go to off-the-beaten path places.......1999-05-26
This is a book that tells what life is like on small ships (fewer than 500 passengers) and it includes everything from cruise ships to barges, freighters, dive boats, sailing ships. You can search by destination and find ships that go to wonderful places that you can't go to in big ships.

Book Description
Why had he come to her, with his dark secrets from a long-ago past? What was the purpose of their strange, haunting journeys back into her own childhood? Was it to help Dab, her retarded older brother, wracked with mysterious pain who sometimes took more care and love than Tree had to give? Was it for her mother, Vy, who loved them the best she knew how, but wasn't home enough to ease the terrible longing?
Whatever secrets his whispered message held, Tree knew she must follow. She must follow Brother Rush through the magic mirror, and find out the truth. About all of them.

Struggle between perseverance in the face of obstacles.......2006-12-12
Although the book Sweet Whispers, Brother Rush was extremely well written and encompassed many wonderful aspects of fantasy writing; I question the quality of the content for young readers. The book touches on many sensitive issues such as child abuse, disease, drug use, sex and developmental issues; which leads me to wonder what age group this book was primarily written for. I do not feel that this book was allowed to evolve into a traditional fantasy theme book because of the focus of the content of Tree's past.
For me personally, reading this book with the knowledge of it being written for a young reader I couldn't get past the topics of the book to really enjoy the fantasy aspects. Although I do think the story showcases' human nature and the struggle between perseverance in the face of obstacles and personal responsibility, I do no think that the content of the book was not worthwhile for young readers. Overall I think Sweet Whispers, Brother Rush was well written and portrayed some common themes found in fantasy books; however the content was lacking for a young reader and this in turn makes me not warmhearted towards the book.
Childhood favorites.......2005-07-12
I liked this book in middle school. So I read it again recently to take a walk down memory lane. I remember now why certain parts of it were confusing. Like why was the mother the way she was? I didn't understand the relationship between the mother and daughter. I just didn't identify with the characters. The main thing I liked about the book and other's that I've read by VA Hamilton is that her books will make your imagination soar. I was kind of on the morbid side when I was younger, I liked reading about death and ghosts, so I guess that's why I liked this book. Good for a teenager.
Nakita At Richview Middle School.......2004-03-11
My book was about a girl and her brother. They lived alone in a house. The girl name was Tree. her brother name was Dab. It was a man will Tree thought it was. It was a ghost. She liked the ghost and she wanted to tell her brother but she did not know how. Dab was slow. He use to taik and get his words wrong. All the girls like him. tree use to see the ghost. It made her see her life that she have not done. a woman can to give them food to eat. They had a wonam who came to clean they house for them. The book was good. Tree had to go to school and look out for her brother. Tree was 15 and Dab was 17 years old. some people can relate to the book. So the book is good. Tre e sometimes came home before Dab. She thougth something had happen to him. Read the book it is good.
The Great Book Of Brother Rush.......2000-02-25
I thought that the book"Sweet Whispers Brother Rush" deserved 5 stars because it is a great love novel but at the same time you can't put it down. It is deffinetly one of the best books I ever read and more than a 1 time read.
Sweet--Not, Bitter--Yes.......1999-12-06
I just finished reading this great book. Why is it great? It would make a wonderful stage play and I'm surprised that no one has done it yet. Hamilton is a master at characterization. The mother and daughter along with their relationship are entirely believable and complicated. Hamilton captured that fine line between love and hate which teens experience with their parents. This book is much better than "Catcher In The Rye!" Buy this book. Read it. You'll be glad you did. And watch out for those fine lookin ghosts hang'n out at da Sevn Levn. See ya dude!

Book Description
In this compelling introduction to the fundamental particles that make up the universe, Frank Close takes us on a journey into the atom to examine known particles such as quarks, electrons, and the ghostly neutrino. Along the way he provides fascinating insights into how discoveries in particle physics have actually been made, and discusses how our picture of the world has been radically revised in the light of these developments. He concludes by looking ahead to new ideas about the mystery of antimatter, the number of dimensions that there might be in the universe, and to what the next 50 years of research might reveal.
Customer Reviews:
decent introduction, but needs more.......2007-05-07
In an introduction to a topic, one expects lots of figures to explain just about every topic. This book, and indeed the entire series, generally has rather few figures. The series also, generally, focuses on the historical development of the topic and not necessarily on the current understanding of the topic. Therefore, the series sacrifices a better explanation of our current understanding to explain who thought what and when. Nonetheless, this book serves adequately in the capacity of a "very short introduction."
Go figure.......2007-04-02
On page 13 (appropriately enough) of this book, we learn that 'Light travels at 300,000 metres per second'. Alas, there is no explanation of why it has slowed a thousandfold since last I heard. I'm afraid I gave up at that point. The Very Short Introduction books are excellent - than me, you will find no one more enthusiastic about them - but they are prone to typos, and so a book like this, heavily reliant on numbers, enters the series at its peril. You may think I am making too much of one typo, but when the value of a work lies so much in its lists of numerical facts and comparisons, what's the point of persevering with it if you can't trust the numbers?
very good.......2005-01-08
very good for a basic introduction to a most fasinating subject. This books takes this subject, which very intresting and wonderful, can be made terribly dry by a bad writer, and puts it forth in its true glory. I highly reconmend it to anyone whos starting out in physics, or to educators seeking a basic introduction to use in a highschool class room.
Not boring to read.......2004-10-25
This book is excellent for anyone who would like to learn fundamentals of particle physics, or refresh his or her basic knowledge in the area. Particles are on the forefront of physics, with new ones discovered or proven to exist not long ago, with new theories emerging, or old ones confirmed or found inconsistent, chances are what we know about particles today is somewhat different than what you may have learned in school back.
Interesting facts and easy to understand comparisons make this book captivating. It explains the structure of atoms, and subatomic particles, as well as methods and instruments used to study them. Sometimes the book is repetitive, but repetition is one of the key aspects of learning.
Overall, this very short introduction feels very fresh and light to a reader, and the last chapter that focuses on current high priority theories to be proven, gives an excellent outlook of what may await us in the future, giving this book balanced perspective.

Book Description
In this bookthe first special collection of Mehta's outstanding writingsthe distinguished author demonstrates a wide range of possibilities available to the narrative and descriptive writer today. In addition to the eight reportorial, autobiographical, and reflective essays included, Mehta provides an insightful introduction on the craft of the essay.
Customer Reviews:
elegant writing, pleasurable reading.......2006-11-28
This primer reconfirms that few writers have crafted more reflective, personal essays than Mehta has over the years and fewer still offer readers from the West his incredible perspective on the wonders of India...and love. This is a writer who hasn't received nearly the acclaim that he deserves.
A great anthology........2004-02-09
The comments about Mr. Mehta's book in this page are undeserved and truly reflect poor understanding of good writing. The pieces included in The Craft of The Essay are outstanding in content and exceptional in style. Any person that approaches them with attention will be rewarded with an enriching experience. To put it in Mr. Mehta's own words - taken from his introduction to this volume - these essays exude clarity, harmony, truth and unfailing courtesy to the reader. If you want to read flashy, easy, fast-food-like essays, you would be mistaken to get this work. If, on the other hand, you enjoy a fine, well-crafted and well-argued collection, this is the book you want to buy.
