With nearly 500 trail descriptions, this classic guide from the Appalachian Mountain Club provides enough information for years--if not a lifetime--of hiking. The book's goal is to give complete coverage of trails in the White Mountains National Forest; it achieves this goal by providing history, geography, and shelter information as well as trail highlights such as spectacular viewpoints and lightly trampled getaways.
The guide includes the lower-lying lakes region in southeastern New Hampshire and numerous trails up Mount Washington, the highest peak in New England. Trails, drawn on large, foldout topographic maps, range in difficulty from easy to advanced. Experienced hikers seeking to become members of the Four Thousand Footer Club will find 65 4,000-foot-plus peaks in the area. --Dolores Kong

Customer Reviews:
A wealth of information!.......2000-03-16
If you're interested in finding out about the Ozarks for the first time or if (like me) you've been to the Ozarks many times this is an excellent book. It starts with a thumbnail history and description of the Ozarks but the bulk of this book is devoted to supplying information on the entire region. This information includes geographic features - rivers and streams, caves, lakes, and topographic properties. Also included are descriptions ranging from a paragraph to several pages on just about every stream, lake, town, and park in the Ozarks. I learned new and interesting facts about areas I've visited many times before. If you love the Ozarks this is a great find!
Book Description
Nathan Malone has been homeschooled his whole life. He’s never spent much time with kids his own age and he’s never dated. His mother is now busy with his new twin sisters, so Nathan must enroll at the local high school for his senior year. On the first day, a girl on a motorcycle catches his eye and Nathan is excited to discover the girl is also in his English class.
Not only does Lisa ride a motorcycle to school, but she’s a loner who seems to come and go as she pleases. She doesn’t care what anybody thinks of her. Nathan is intrigued—he’s never met anyone like her or had such strong feelings. When he and Lisa finally start spending time together, he’s the happiest he’s ever been.
But Lisa has a tragic secret and, when she decides she’ll handle it herself, Nathan has to make a choice. Can he ever let go of Lisa?
Customer Reviews:
A touching coming-of-age novel.......2007-02-10
Seventeen-year-old Nathan Malone has led a sheltered life. He is home-schooled by his mother and doesn't spend a lot of time with kids his own age except for his best friend Skeet. Nathan is suddenly thrust into a strange new world when he enrolls in one of Atlanta's largest high schools for his senior year. He has a lot of hard lessons to learn about love and loss during his first year in high school.
LETTING GO OF LISA, a heartwarming novel by Lurlene McDaniel, revolves around Nathan's relationship with Lisa Lindstrom. Lisa isn't the type of girl who Nathan's mother had hoped he'd bring home. She rides a motorcycle, wears leather pants and acts like she doesn't care what others think of her.
Every boy at school wants to know Lisa, but she won't give them the time of day. Nathan manages to crack her tough outer shell by being himself. He shares his feelings with her even if she isn't willing to open up to him.
Nathan sees right through Lisa's tough act when she brings her friend Jodie to his garage to try out for his country band. Jodie is a great singer, even though she's very shy, and Nathan hires her to be the lead singer of The Heartbreakers. He knows that Lisa cared enough about her friend to want to help her; Jodie never would have tried out on her own. Soon after Jodie joins the band, Lisa has an excuse to spend more time with Nathan and listen to his music. As Lisa and Nathan get closer, a romance also blossoms between Jodie and Skeet.
When Lisa starts disappearing from school in the middle of English class, Nathan wonders where she goes. He soon discovers that she has a secret, and he has a choice to make. Will he be able to let go of her?
LETTING GO OF LISA is a touching coming-of-age novel with no stereotypical characters; Nathan and Lisa are both complex individuals with real feelings. Lurlene McDaniel does a great job of making the book sentimental without being sappy and keeps the dialogue believable. It's an enjoyable read for people of all ages.[...]
could not put the book down.......2006-11-10
it was shipped very quick and the book was very good. it was one of those books that you don't want to put down it was so good.
Magic Carpet Ride.......2006-10-27
Nathan Malone, 17 has been home schooled all of his life. The birth of his identical twin sisters, Abby and Audrey prompt his overly protective mother to allow him to attend the local high school in a suburb of Atlanta. The boy's father gives this decision his blessing.
Nathan marvels at the life experiences of his peers; he chafes at the sheltered life he has until then led. When he meets Lisa Lindstrom, he is awed by this fearless girl who rebuffed a pompous, popular football star and who rides her motorcycle to school.
In time, the pair bond, along with Nathan's faithful friend and country music collaborator, Skeet. Nathan does a lot of maturing over the course of that school year. He meets Lisa's mother and live in boyfriend, who are genuinely interested in his well being as well; he learns acceptance.
Nathan grows to love the girl and even follows her when she leaves school early. He discovers she is making regular trips to the hospital every afternoon and her medical secret.
Once the secrets are aired, including Nathan's tragic loss of 6-year-old sister in a drowning accident when he was 3, the two realize that they have more in common than their different lifestyles would ever have suggested.
An intense book that might make you cry, but it is worth reading. You will love the indomitable spirit of these two young people and the characters will leave you thinking about them for a very long time. The story makes me think of the 1968 Steppenwolf classic, "Magic Carpet Ride." Lurlene McDaniel is a master at her craft and you won't be disappointed. This book is worth every page.
WONDERFUL!.......2006-08-20
I love this book! This is so good.
A seventeen-year-old Nathan Malone has been homeschooled his whole life and his mother had taught him everything he had learned. Until Mrs. Malone gave birth 2 twin daughters so she couldn't teach Nathan. Nathan decided to go to high school for his senior year, but his mother didn't want him to go there...but he did go to high school. Nathan met a motorcylce girl name is Lisa. She acted so tough and ignored everyone at school. Nathan tried to act so cool around her. He tried to get her out with him, but she turned him down. Finally they became friends. A strange thing is Lisa keeps miss the school and Nathan wondered what happened to her. So then at school, Nathan followed Lisa to the....the hospital. What was she doing there? Something test? Well go find out. :D
Nothing But the Ususal.......2006-07-27
I was at Barnes and Nobles the other day with my boyfriend when I decided to check on the Lurlene McDaniel section in hopes that she has finally written another book. I found My Secret Boyfriend which she had written long ago but that I did not have and then spotted this title. I was so excited because I thought for sure it was a new book and it was!
As usual the book was excellent! I don't ever expect them not to be because McDaniel is truely an amazing author and reading her books are something I love.
If you are a fan of her stories that draw tears, this one will not dissapoint you

Book Description
Genius demystified, the Dummies way!
In 1905, Albert Einstein revolutionized modern physics with his theory of relativity. He went on to become a twentieth-century icon-a man whose name and face are synonymous with "genius." Now, at last, ordinary readers can explore Einstein's life and work in this new For Dummies guide. Physicist Carlos Calle chronicles Einstein's career and explains his work-including the theories of special and general relativity-in language that anyone can understand. He shows how Einstein's discoveries affected everything from the development of the atom bomb to the theory of quantum mechanics. He sheds light on Einstein's personal life and beliefs, including his views on religion and politics. And he shows how Einstein's work continues to affect our world today, from nuclear power to space travel to artificial intelligence.
Customer Reviews:
Covers a broad range of topics in physics.......2007-08-20
An excellent book which clearly describes not only Einstein's contributions to physics, but the contributions of many other physicists who went before him like Galileo, Kepler, Newton, Maxwell, and Lorentz and who were his contemporaries like Planck and Bohr. In highlighting Einstein's contributions, he covers a wide range of topics including dynamics, electromagnetism, atomic physics, and quantum mechanics. For a more detailed description of physical concepts covering a broader range, I highly recommended his book on superstrings, etc.
It's Delightful!.......2007-07-20
Helps to stretch this old brain of mine when I thought that I was all through with learning.
The book that convinced me that Einstein is understandable.......2007-04-10
This is the book to read if you want to understand relativity but don't know mathematics. As a biologist, I read 6 chapters in one night. Dr. Calle's analogy made use of my commonsense and everyday experience to the best. From the history and philosophy of physics described in the book, I figured out what theoretical physics is and how physicists do it. I still have questions not answered by the book, but I finished the book and want another one by the same author.
I wish all the science professors have Dr. Calle's communication skills and interest in teaching.
If you're curious about Einstein and his work, start here.......2006-04-07
I found Einstein for Dummies to be interesting and informative. It was an enjoyable read, and quickly got me up to speed on Albert Einstein and his extraordinary life's work. At $13, it is priced right, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is curious about Einstein.
A beautiful discussion.......2006-03-03
It is the best of the many books that I have read that present Einstein's work in a simplified fashion. The personal data about Einstein is interesting also.

Book Description
From a baby's first words to the great works of literature, language plays an integral part in our lives. Yet most of us know very little about the nature of language--what it is, how we learn it, how it works. Indeed, though linguists, philosophers, psychologists, and other thinkers have
made great strides in the understanding of language, little of their insight has trickled down to the general public. To remedy this, Ronald Macaulay provides in The Social Art an informative, intriguing tour of what we know about language today, in thirty brief, highly readable chapters replete
with jokes, anecdotes, and vivid examples.
Macaulay offers a sweeping look at language in all its aspects. Ranging far and wide, he delves into such topics as child language acquisition, syntax, semantics, writing, style, conversation, swearing, rhetoric, narrative, literature, and the history of English. Each chapter provides an
authoritative overview of a particular topic--from Pidgins and Creoles to the Magic of Words--spiced with intriguing asides. In his discussion of conversation, for instance, Macaulay points out that while many cultures abhor silence in the company of others, among the Western Apache it is normal to
greet strangers with silence (talking begins only when the participants feel at ease with each other). Likewise, in the chapter on the history of English, we learn that many English terms relating to finance--including "capital," "fee," "chattel," and "pecuniary"--all come from words relating to
domestic herds, dating back to societies where one's wealth was measured in the number of cows one owned.
The book also includes many fascinating nuggets about languages world-wide. We read of click languages such as Hottentot, Zulu, and Xhosa, where some consonant sounds are produced by sucking in air to produce clicking sounds (because of the difficulty in producing sequences of these sounds,
Zulu-speaking children practice saying tongue-twisters with numerous clicks). And we sample amusing coinages from Tok Pisin (a pidgin language derived from English): for instance, gras means "grass"; gras bilong fes means "beard"; gras bilong hed means "hair"; and gras bilong pisin means "feather."
And finally, Macaulay raises many provocative questions concerning language. For instance, is the elite version of any language intrinsically better than its dialects, or is it simply (as Max Weinreich put it) "a dialect with an army"? Is there any conclusive evidence that girls develop language
skills earlier than boys? (Macaulay says no.) And is it true that the way people perceive the world is determined by the language they speak, that as Wittgenstein claimed, "the limits of my language are the limits of my world"?
Thoughtful, informative, delightful, this volume is the perfect overview of an art we all practice every day of our lives. An excellent starting point for anyone interested in language, linguistics, or writing, it will give readers a new appreciation of the pleasure to be found in the study of
this uniquely human phenomenon.
Customer Reviews:
Good information. Most useful text in my Anthro 104 class.......2001-12-17
I loved this book because it was easier to read than my other two Anthropology 104 textbooks, Language Shock: Understanding the Culture of Conversation and The workings of language.
The best feature of this book is the glossary, which gives you meanings to some of the most used terms in the book. It has 33 chapters and it reads quickly like an elementary school english textbook.
linguistics survey for the non-linguistical.......2000-01-23
I found this a decent, though not outstanding, survey of linguistics. I'd hand it to a monolinguistic English speaker who was curious about linguistics. I wouldn't hand it to a multilingual or to someone who already knows something about the subject. In fact, I'm far more satisfied with David Crystal's Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language as a survey both for browsing and the more serious lay reader.
I suppose my real complaint *is* that the book is oriented toward monolinguistic English speakers, which I am not. I feel a more interesting introduction to linguistics would have included more on other languages. Not bad, mind you, but understand its limitations.
highly approachable above all else.......1999-12-08
This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in language or linguistics at any level of discipline. Macaulay's style is informative and approachable--how refreshing it is to read a book on the topic of language that utilizes an easily approachable one! The chapters are quite short but make their points and present their theories clearly and succinctly, never drudging out boring pedantry just to fill pages. His is a very down-to-earth style and approach to this often lofty topic.
