    Book Description

A FLORIDA FISHERMAN MEETS ONE OF NESSIE’S AMERICAN COUSINS…
“It was as if someone were staring at my back. You know, the type of feeling when the hair seems to stand up on the back of your neck. I turned around and looked directly into the face of a giant sea serpent! Its head and neck were raised out of the water to the height of about 10 feet. The frightening thing was staring at me with two dull, dark eyes five inches across. The head was slightly larger than the neck, probably about 36 inches in diameter. The thing stared at me for at least a minute, moving its head slightly from side to side. Then it disappeared beneath the surface.” —from Chapter 5

5 out of 5 stars Opportunities in dendrochronology.......2000-05-04

This is a nice friendly book that looks into the question which species of trees offer opportunities to build dendrochronological series. The vast majority of these is not used at present, or only in a very limited sense. In 402 pages, with 563 figures, the book lists species in 1) Eurasia and Japan, 2) North America and 3) the Southern Hemisphere. Each species treated is illustrated by: a line drawing (morfology), a photograph of the habitus, one or more climate diagrams, a distribution map, a photomicrograph of a cross section (often at 40x) and some 'radiograms' (strips showing many growth rings). Note that these pictures are not all always present for each and every species: the especially promising species get more attention than the less promising. The quality of these drawings and black&white pictures is pretty good, but perhaps not quite up to the standard that might be expected at this price. Obviously this book will be of most use to those working on dendrochronoloy: the professional and serious amateur. Dendrochronology is in itself not a particularly difficult discipline: it is open to anyone with plenty of time and devotion, some basic tools and enough storage space.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Read...& You Don't Have to Be From Buffalo to Dig It!.......2002-04-10

I latched on to Mr. Lewyn's fine volume while looking up some reference material on Buffalo. For those of who are familar with that material, you know how incredibly sparse the topic is. Car-Free in Buffalo goes beyond its immediate subject, and does a good job of depicting how urban-dwellers in the late 20th and the early 21st Century strive to exist without the dreaded automobile. Mr. Lewyn has done Buffalo and the rest of us a fine service by writing producing this work and I look forward to his companion work on Atlanta!

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Never Missed a Thing.......2001-03-09

As Mr. Lewyn's former Southern bartender I can attest without having read the book that Michael can suck up more facts and figures than a Hoover Upright! If he has cast his eye on Buffalo then nothing will be missing from this book. The man doesn't miss a thing! Though it will do me little good in Arkansas I will be purchasing this book in the near future to show off to Michael's former friends and associates. Keep up the good work Michael!

    5 out of 5 stars my masterpiece.......2001-03-08

As the author of this book, I naturally think it is wonderful. This book isn't just about public transportation -- it is a neighborhood by neighborhood guide to Buffalo. I even mention specific stores and restaurants that you might want to try (though on the negative side, this means some of my information might be out of date).

1 out of 5 stars Great Gag Gift.......2004-08-16

If you have friend who's a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fanatic, manga/comic book lover, this would be a great gag gift. Page after page of hilariously bad dialogue. Spitting out horrible line after horrible line. The drawing isn't the greatest either. the characters have huge foreheads and bodies sometimes out of proportion. If nothing else, the only redeeming quality about this horrible exploitation of a movie franchise, is the main male character proclaims something along the lines of: 'She is sixteen, She is Perfect!'

    1 out of 5 stars If only I could give a zero.......2004-08-14

The translation was melodramatic at best. The cultural note stating that an ancient chinese coin was worth about $1.40 was painful. My question was: "Is that in Ancient American Dollars?"
The artwork was good, but could not compensate for the piss poor narration and atrocious dialogue. I did not find the action to be particularly imaginative.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful artwork and an interesting story.......2003-01-12

Contrary to what most people seem to think, this comic is not based on the movie of the same name. The movie was based on the fourth in a series of five novels by Wang Du Lu. The comic begins with by adapting book three and, if I've heard correctly, will adapt all the way through book five.
Anyway, the comic itself is definitely a sight to behold. There is so much detail and the art is so fluid and the colors are so vivid it just demands a second read to take everything in. The story is very interesting, beginning with two thieves attempting to steal the Green Destiny (a sword with great power) which of course results in some truly beautiful fight sequences. The pacing is perfect. It never seems rushed or too slow. Once you sit down and start reading, you won't stop until it's finished. And that leads me to my only complaint: it's too short, especially for the price. Though it is a very entertaining read and the production values seem to be pretty high (it is in full color) the story itself is only about 80 pages long, and those 80 pages go by really fast. I finished it in only about 20 minutes, maybe less.
Overall, an excellent and entertaining graphic novel. I'm highy anticipating the next volume.

5 out of 5 stars Top of the list of best movie-based graphic novels........2003-01-02

This is a stunning example of Andy Soto's dedication to both his art and the material. The result is profound, inspiring and a delight to read.

Mr. Soto excels under the pressure from meeting the Author's wife to research the book. This dynamic approach to interpreting the material provides a fresh story. Soto's illustrations create an intricate level of character design and rendering.

This is only book one. I greatly anticipate book two, but worry that this isn't being marketed to the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon movie fans.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.. Delicate worký.......2002-12-27

    Beautiful.. Delicate work...

In what I hope is going to be a long run of books, Andy Seto takes Wang Du Lu's classic martial arts series "The Iron/Crane Pentalogy" and transfers them into some beautiful Chinese manga.

If you ever wondered what happened before and after the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" this will be the series to watch.

Up until now Wang Du Lu's books have never been translated into English. Seto does an excellent job with the translation and captures the look, romance and spirit of the film with his outstanding delicate art.

This is a MUST buy for anyone who loved Crouching Tiger and would like to know more about the characters and story.

    Excellent read. Flawless art.

                  Book Description

Here is an introduction to physics for high school students, college-101 courses, or students looking for a self-teaching introduction to this sometimes intimidating science. The author makes physics easier to comprehend by using ordinary language to explain concepts. Mathematical techniques, limited to elementary algebra, are introduced and used throughout to provide the necessary rigor and to give students the tools they need to solve problems. Topics introduced include motion, forces, machines, energy, heat, wave motion, noise and music, electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic waves, the properties of light, and an introduction to nuclear physics. This new edition can be used by prospective medical school students to help them prepare for many questions that appear in the MCAT. Material in the text that applies to the MCAT as well as material specific to college-level introductory physics is marked with an asterisk. Also new in this edition is a chapter on electronics, and expansions and updates on many physics topics, including special relativity.

                  4 out of 5 stars Decent enough........2006-10-03

This book does a decent enough job of getting points across simplistically and making the math understandable. It can be slightly confusing at times though, but it's rare.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-05-03

This book was very informative and covered topics not covered in my college text. It is thorough and easy to understand. I would recommend it to anyone at any level.

                  5 out of 5 stars Helpful as a resource.......2006-03-09

I purchased this book to help with the Engineering Physics class I'm enrolled in. When the textbook used in the class is confusing I pull this book out and it clears the problems up. Perfect as a resource.

5 out of 5 stars High score with minimal effort........2003-02-16

This book summarizes the main points in a very lucid and concise manner with small number of carefully selected examples which emphasizes the main idea. Because of the unique format of this book, students can grasp the main idea in a shortest time with minimal effort. This book can be helpful to review the main ideas before the exams or to grasp the main idea before studying the subject in more detail.

2 out of 5 stars Not recommended for a physics student!.......2002-04-08

I tried myself physics from this book when I was in 10th grade, and, although in the early going it could get points across, it eventually did a worse and worse job until, in electricity & magnetism, it had a tendency to confuse. Not recommended - if you are a student who wants to learn physics, get a real textbook, like Resnick & Halliday, or Sears & Zemansky. If you want a great problem supplement, get The Physics Problem Solver, by REA. It is a great book, and a must for physics students.
If you are not interested is studying physics seriously, this book is not that expensive you might want to consider purchasing it. Don't expect to gain any deep understand and you'll probably have to ask some one who does know physics to explain a few points to you, but you'll probably get something out of it.
So, I guess I'd give it 1 star for a physics student, 3 stars for some one who just wants to know a little physics but is not serious on the subject, so it averaged out to 2 stars.

The story opens with a woman in white, a shroud, in a coffin on the water. A fairly odd sort of a both, that one. A bit of a gothic type of story, here.

This is one of those tales where the odd woman that might be a vampire turns up at your doorway trying out for a full length wet t-shirt contest. However, she only wants help, as she and others have been in an accident.

The protagonist does have a psychic aunt though, for some reason.

`The Lady of the Shroud,' written in 1909 by the author of `Dracula' has been an obscure title, and will remain so forever. The book opens with a stunning sequence with a mysterious lady in a small coffin floating off the coast of the Blue Mountain, fictional country in Balkan Peninsula. Clearly Bram Stoker wrote this surprise opening, part imitating Wilkie Collins's style. (`The Lady of the Shroud' is written in the style of assorted documents like `The Woman in White' and of course, `Dracula.')

However, the intriguing opening soon drifts into very lengthy and boring sequences about the reading of a will, which changes the life of young intrepid Rupert Sent Leger. Rupert inherits enormous amount of money on condition that he help the people of the Blue Mountain and the Balkan acquire the independence from the threatening power surrounding them.

[NOT EXACTLY A GOTHIC NOVEL] But how does the titular `Lady of the Shroud' fit in the story? The scanty Gothic elements are provided by the enigmatic woman who knocks on the window of the Castle of Vissarion in the middle of the night. The beautiful lady in white shroud, soaked to the skin, asks Rupert to allow her to stay in his room, and warm herself. Rupert, suspecting that she might be a vampire, lets her in, and finds himself attracted to the majestic beauty of the lady. But who is she?

The truths about the lady are far from convincing, even far less interesting than the three female vampires in the Castle Dracula. For all the inclusion of such items as deserted church, `second sight' of Rupert's aunt, and very ritualistic midnight marriage, you will be disappointed if you are looking for any occult element in this book. What little Gothic factor in the first part of the book is dispersed in the second half, in which you read, most incredibly, about battleships and aeroplanes. In spite of the unique topics used here, Bram Stoker never succeeds in incorporating these high-tech items into the story, and his bland prose is not imaginative enough to successfully envision the new world of the Balkan nation.

To be honest, I found most part of the book very boring. Stoker throws several interesting things into the book's story, but he doesn't seem to understand that reading about ten or more pages of the minutest (and dull) accounts of the fictional country's coronation ceremony can be hardly attractive. You just cannot do that if you started a book with the `Lady' in the floating coffin. I know it is cruel to say this, but if the book has a merit, it might be that it shows how Stoker failed to realize and re-create the successful formula that worked in `Dracula' written about ten years before.

In Victorian England, a marked fear of Russia prevailed in the government and the public. As a result of the Crimean War and other Russian threats to the British empire, the English mind was haunted by a shadowy enemy of barbarous Eastern invaders. The influence of this Russophobia is evident in the works of Bram Stoker, who responded to the Russian challenge to British Imperial hegemony through the character of Dracula, a primitive and menacing Eastern figure destroyed by warriors pledged to the Crown. The text investigates the role of Russophobia in Stoker’s fiction, particularly his novels Dracula and The Lady of the Shroud. It offers historical information about Russophobia and the Crimean War, considers Slavic and Balkan connections, and analyzes Stoker’s vampire themes. The resulting work shows how two nations’ histories intertwine in an unexpected literary avenue. Illustrations include numerous political cartoons of the era.

Journalist Jim Corrigan presents The 48th Pennsylvania In The Battle Of The Crater: A Regiment Of Coal Miners Who Tunneled Under The Enemy, the true story of a battle of the American Civil War. When Grant attempted to claim the Confederate railway nexus of Petersburg, Virginia, the resulting stalemate should have been broken by Union commander General Ambrose Burnside's plan to allow the 48th Pennsylvania, a regiment from the mining town of Pottsville, to tunnel under Confederate entrenchments and apply explosives. Yet bickering among the Union leadership, and superb cooperation among the Confederate leadership, led to the Union's downfall at Petersburg and cost an opportunity to bring an early end to the war. The 48th Pennsylvania In The Battle Of The Crater examines the details of this historic conflict with black-and-white photographs, a list of forces in the Battle of the Crater, a table of casualties, a list of soldiers decorated for gallantry, and a wealth of research and detailed notes supporting the meticulous accounting of details. An index rounds out this scholarly and welcome addition to Civil War and military history shelves.

The 48th Pennsylvania in the Battle of the Crater is an interesting, engaging and well-written book. Author Jim Corrigan tells the story in a clear and easy to understand manner. I didn't know much about the Battle of the Crater when I started the book, but my interest never waned. Corrigan keeps you turning the pages with a well-paced style. I enjoyed the background he provided about the major characters, his "big picture" view of the battle, and his presentation of the controversies related to the battle. Additionally, his maps are well done and a valuable aid to readers, particularly those who may not be familiar with the Battle of the Crater. I believe this book will appeal to Civil War aficionados as well as those with a casual interest in this time period. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent work of history .......2006-05-18

Students of the American Civil War are well aware that General Ulysses Grant called the battle of the Crater the "saddest affair" he had witnessed during the war. On that July day in 1864, Union hopes for a breakthrough at Petersburg dissipated with a bungled and tragic attack on the Confederate lines that had been torn apart with the explosion of some 8,000 pounds of explosives. The battle was the culmination of one of, if not the, most daring and remarkable exploits of the war's eastern theatre: the tunneling under the Confederate lines by a regiment of Pennsylvania troops recruited from Schuylkill County and composed largely of coal miners.
With the 48th Pennsylvania in the Battle of Crater, author Jim Corrigan paints a thoroughly engaging and very fair portrait of the events that led up to the battle and the battle itself. The work is well-balanced in portraying both the Union and Confederate side. Corrigan has done a great job in telling of the remarkable feat performed by the 48th PA in the face of great disadvantage and has made sense of all the complicated military, social, and political factors that occured both before and during the battle.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn more about the war in the East and about the 48th Pennsylvania Regiment. This book is an excellent work of history told in a clear and easily understandable manner, despite the many complexities involved in the tunneling and in the battle. Very well-done.
