Astonishing color pictures from the rain forest.......2002-02-22
A very handsome book, full of beautiful color photographs of neotropical wildlife. Definitely the most captivating picture book about the rain forest that I know of. It made me even more aware of the need to preserve the incredibly rich variety of life forms on our planet.

An Inspiring Story Of Friendship.......2004-01-20
I found this book hard to put down once I started reading it. Shirley Chance Yarbro has written a story about an amazing, inspiring friendship that begins for two little girls; Josie, who was poor, and Ginny, who was rich. They met by chance, but had to keep their friendship a secret by meeting in their secret place, "the hollow". You will fall in love with the characters in this fast moving story. I highly recommend it! There is a sequel to this book, "Valle Verde". Another page turner!!!
Wonderful Story of Friendship.......2002-08-01
"Beneath the Canopy" is a unique story rich in history and loyalty. It has an interesting and surprising plot twist that ties the story together in a most heartwarming way. I heartily recommend it to anyone who likes reading about the old South.
Great Book!.......2002-07-14
"Beneath the Canopy" by Shirley Chance Yarbro is a great book. It tells the life story of young Josie Hunnicutt. And it takes place before, during, and after the Civil War. It is an inspiring story of Josie's hard-ships, and also her triumphs while going through life with her only best friend, Ginny Lathrop. You see, Josie was a poor girl, and Ginny, rich. So, in order to keep their friendship strong and true, they would always go sneaking off to their secret place, "The Hallow". There, beneath the canopy. So, if you like stories of friendships, romances, and just plan ol' stories about life, then this book is most defenantly for you. And also, keep looking for "Valle Verde: sequel to Beneath the Canopy" to follow these, wonderfull created, "Canopy" characters.

Excellent!!.......2004-01-20
This is an excellent sequel to "Beneath the Canopy". This book is full of history and romance. Old southern "prim and proper" aristocracy meets the wild west in this one. New characters are introduced, and you will become attached to them quickly. Shirley Chance Yarbro has done a lot of research on the Apache Indians and how the railroad came west to Texas. I highly recommend this book! I have ordered the next book in this series, "Shadows Over New Orleans". I can't wait till it arrives!
Wonderful Sequel!.......2002-08-04
"Valle Verde" by Shirley Chance Yarbro is, by far, her best book yet! It is a terrific sequel to, and even better than, "Beneath the Canopy". I really enjoyed the change from settings, and really liked the real American history put into it. This book would make a great movie! And I am truly looking forward to Mrs. Yarbro's next release(s). I absolutely recommend this book to you readers who have read "Beneath the Canopy".
True Western Adventure.......2002-08-01
"Valle Verde", by Shirley Chance Yarbro, is a story of how peoples' lives can become caught up between history and progress. The author did some good research on the Apache Indians and tells of how the railroad first came to west Texas.
She also tells how greed can bring grief and hardships to innocent people. The story changes locales several times, and that adds interest. All in all, I found it very worthwhile reading.

Description:
Huge areas of the mid-elevation mountains of the French Massif central were abandoned by agriculture after grazing abandonment. They were colonized by pioneer trees, like Scots pine and Silver birch, that have formed monospecific stands in the space of a few years. In such stands beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), a late-sucessional species, has been established naturally. In order to study beech growth and development, beech trees of various ages were sampled under birch and Scots pine canopy. Dimensions, age, radial and height growth of the subject beech tree and dimensions of branches at the top of the canopy were measured. Local competition around each beech was assessed with competition indices and below-ground competition was quantified by root biomass measurements. Despite slightly greater light availability under birch than under Scots pine, beech saplings exhibited superior growth and dimensions at a given age under Scots pine than under birch. However, this trend tended to decrease while beech was aging and started penetrating into the upper tree layer. Although, competition index values were significantly different between birch and Scots pine stands, growth or size were reduced by competition in the same proportions when comparing the two types of cover. Beech fine root biomass was comparable for young and intermediate trees, whereas fine root biomass of both competitor trees and ground vegetation was clearly more abundant under birch. Lastly, branching pattern only exhibited significant differences for young trees, branches were more vertically distributed and of lower dimensions beneath birch canopy than beneath pine canopy. We concluded that beech growth was, in the first stage, more limited under birch than under pine due to a higher below-ground competition.

A Werewolf in Sweet Valley..........2005-12-08
A Book Review: Sweet Valley High: Love and Death in London
And A Date with a Werewolf
Sweet Valley High: Love and Death in London and A Date with a Werewolf are fantastic books! They are written by Kate William, but were created by Francine Pascal. In these books, Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield go to London, England as interns for The London Journal newspaper. Jessica falls in love with Lord Robert Pembroke Jr. Elizabeth is now dating Luke Shepard, a poet at the London Journal. Elizabeth and Luke suspect that the newspaper has been covering up murders that have been happening around England. They think that a werewolf is the killer but Jessica doesn't believe them.
These stories take place in London, England and the main characters are: Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield, who are 16-year-old twin sisters. Some other characters are Luke Shepard, Tony Frank, Sergeant Bumpo, Lucy Friday, Lord Robert Pembroke Jr. and Sr., and Andrew Thatcher. Elizabeth and Jessica are tired of investigating cases that don't matter; such as the case of the missing mink coat and the killer sink. They decide to secretly investigate the murders that the paper has been covering up. The murders look like a wild animal could be the killer. Luke and Elizabeth think that a werewolf might be the killer. They also think that Lord Robert Pembroke Jr. could be the werewolf and murderer.
I loved these books because they are exciting and scary. I recommend this book to girls that are in 5th through 8th grade. You can find the whole Sweet Valley High series at the library. Once again, the titles are Sweet Valley High: Love and Death in London and A Date with a Werewolf. I hope you enjoy them!
Thrilling!.......1998-06-20
THis book is definitely one I would recommend. It keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. Read it!!

Book Description
Ricardo Lloyd, md, phd, provides critical and tutorial surveys of the cutting-edge molecular and cell biologic techniques used today in the analysis of cells and tissues in situ. These molecular-based histologic and morphologic techniques are described in step-by-step detail by hands-on experts, often those who have originated or perfected them. Among the techniques presented are laser capture microdissection, in situ hybridization, FISH, confocal laser scanning microscopy, in situ PCR, and tyramide amplification. Applications include the detection of infectious agents and DNA, the diagnosis of undifferentiated tumors and endocrine lesions, the metaphase analysis of whole blood cultures, and clonality analysis. In its integrated, state-of-the-art approach, Morphology Methods: Cell and Molecular Biology Techniques thoroughly details and applies the rich panoply of significant new cell and molecular biologic technologies to all the major problems confronting morphologic studies and diagnostic pathology today.

Book Description
This publication is the first to present the quantitative application of quantum chemistry to organometallic reactions. Great progress has been made in recent years in the calculation of transition states of organometallic conversions in both homo and heterogeneous catalysis. This volume, which contains seven contributions by leading scientists, deals with key reactions of homogeneous catalysis including oxidative addition, migratory insertions, 2+2 additions, the Wacker reaction, and epoxidation. The book provides experimental chemists with an up-to-date overview of the state of the art in this field, and will stimulate an adjustment of views previously based on semiempirical calculations. For researchers and advanced graduate students whose work involves organometallics and catalysis

Creationism vs. evolution.......2007-06-05
If you believe in creationism then read this book with caution. This book tries to brainwash you into thinking that evolution is based on solid foundation and creationism is quack. Buyer beware. I would not buy this book for someone under 18 years of age.
Very Easy Book To Read.......2006-02-25
This book is self explanatory and easy to read. I use this book for my SC 102 class. I'm a senior non-science major and it is really a good book.
Very good book and CD.......2005-09-24
The book is very good and the merchant was excellent in service and delivery.
Nice edition, but it is really necessary?.......2004-04-16
For over thirty years, McGraw has been putting out various editions of this highly successful textbook. Now in its tenth iteration, McGraw has made an important extension. It added a CD (which was long overdue). Plus, the book gives access to an online resource called PowerWeb. Pretty snazzy! You can access whole bunches of material there which is simply not in the book.
Hopefully, this may help motivate some students to learn more effectively. But a disquieting counterargument has arisen in some quarters. Is a new edition really needed? Perhaps an earlier edition would suffice for most students. If so, this would let several buy second hand versions far more cheaply. But if the publisher goes to this edition, and it is made mandatory by a school, then it is far harder for students to find used versions. At least for a few years. And later? When those used editions start circulating, what if the publisher and school then go to a newer edition?
From the Viewpoint of a Freshman High School Student........1998-11-30
This title is a comprehensive look at many aspects of science. Its Study guide is very helpful in preparing for examinations. The book, however, has a complicated way of explaining material. This slight defect may be reduced with the help of the useful appendixes, and study guides.
Book Description
When Guy Davenport looks at the world, the world changes, sometimes just a little and sometimes a lot. And no reader is the same after reading his or her first Davenport essay or story. He is a writer perfectly described by the term “singular,” and in praising his work, from fiction to poetry, from translations to essays, critics all over the world have noted his unique manner, his remarkable erudition, and his startling humor. He is the finely realized perfection of high modernism blended with an American sensibility as old as Emerson’s. For The Death of Picasso, Davenport has gathered twenty-seven essays and stories from throughout his career, more than one-third of which have never before appeared in book form. The whole stands as the author’s choice of the pieces he would have us read today if we are curious about what he’s been up to all this time. The result is an exciting and invigorating selection, a testament to one of the prose masters at work today.
Customer Reviews:
Somewhat disappointed.......2004-04-08
Having previously read and reread Guy Davenports' Geography of the Imagination, I was prepared to say that anything written by him would be worth reading. However, I was disappointed that a man of such erudition would have to resort to some of the homoerotic passages in his The Death of Picasso. Despite this crtitcism, I find Davenport to be exciting because he constantly leads the reader to explore new subjects.
A Perfect Introduction to the Only Author I Re-Read.......2003-10-03
The title story of this generous new collection is one of my all-time favorites. I read voraciously, and have several favorite authors, but Davenport is the only one I habitually return to and re-read. DEATH OF PICASSO will introduce you properly to the MacArthur genius award recipient who remains largely unknown despite being arguably the nation's finest stylist. Guy Davenport's fictions are multi-layered delights. You can root around in them again and again, each time finding new nuggets and making new connections and cross-connections to his other work and to the larger world of fact and literature. D of P includes not just fictions but also criticism, which in Davenport's case mean not dull stuff for insiders but richly detailed and entertaining adventures. If you are looking for enormous talent and knowledge, displayed in writing that always delights, Davenport deserves your attention. The only thing lacking in D of P is his excellent drawings, which he has from time to time employed to add still another layer to his unique confections. Take a chance, buy this book. You may find that you have stumbled across the author you should have been reading all along.
The Best American Writer.......2003-09-15
Guy Davenport is the best living American writer; he compares to Joyce in terms of his technical ability. This book will be an excellent starting point for anyone ready for the possibility.
