The thermodynamic characteristics of biochemical reactions.......2007-01-02

This little book explains what was known when it was written
(1971) about how energy can be stored in molecules like glucose
and adenosine triphosphate (ATP, the universal energy carrying
molecule in living cells) and released again later to power those
processes in the cell that require energy input in order to
proceed. The author was one of the leaders in research in
understanding the thermodynamics of biochemical reactions. Its
major topics include:

- Overall energy flow, from sun to plants to animals and to final
dissipation as heat.

- Thermodynamics and the nature of "free energy".

- ATP. The explanation of what exactly is a "high energy
phosphate bond" and why energy is released when it is
hydrolyzed is the clearest I have seen in my limited reading.

- Photosynthesis.

- Biosynthesis, the synthesis of sugars, proteins, lipids and
other biological molecules from simpler precursors.

- Active transport, the "pumping" of ions and molecules against
chemical or electrical gradients.

- Physical motion, especially in muscles.

So long as it is read as a supplement to more contemporary
accounts, I think this is still an interesting book and still
worth reading. I especially liked it for its clear focus on the
issue of energy transfer and its clear presentation of the
meaning of "free energy". Lehninger was one of the "stars" of
biochemistry and, even where his exposition is now seriously out
of date, it is always interesting to follow the thinking of a
fine and educated mind working on a hard and interesting problem.

Of course much has been learned that Lehninger couldn't have
known in 1971. There are places where he says "it is not known
how ...", or "several alternative theories have been postulated
for ...", but now in 2007, we do have definitive explanations for
those unknowns. So _Bioenergetics_ is no longer a cutting edge
book and can no longer be read in the hope of getting an
up-to-date understanding of the biochemical issues involved.

Although the book is old, from my inexpert point of view, it
appears that there were no serious errors in it. The author only
says something is true if the evidence supporting it was strong.
Where something was not well known, the author was very clear
about saying so and, where speculation was indulged in, it was
also clear that he was speculating. You won't learn the latest
results in molecular biology from it, but I think it can be read
without fear of absorbing false theories.

Some background in organic chemistry is desirable in order to
understand the book. A very basic introductory course is
sufficient. Without that the book can still be read and enjoyed,
but it will be hard reading.

I give this book 5 1971 stars. It wouldn't be fair to rate it in
terms of 2007 science, but I think if you've read this far in my
review you'll get the idea of its value.

First book I found on the subject. I even didn't know Bioenergetics per se before I found this book. Gosh, I just can not believe how much I learned from this book. It has given the definitive base for my concepion of the Universe. It is as readable and enjoyable as a novel or any kind of literature. I think it has influenced me more as a human being than as a Chemistry student. As also an Anthropology student, I found this book impactating. Well, I'll say it again, I just can not believe how much I have learned from this book.

There's plenty of play-by-play baseball action here, described in the jargon of the sports page, and boys looking for a straightforward sports novel with a bit of sex thrown in will be willing to forgive the half-baked psychology of this simple story that tries to be more than it is. Patty Campbell is half baked.......2001-03-18

Patty Campbell's Amazon review of "Plunking Reggie Jackson" refers to the book's "half baked psychology." If confronting your own deficiencies and finding the courage to confess and overcome them is half baked psychology, then we should all be taken out of the oven prematurely. "Plunking Reggie Jackson" is, like Bennett's other books, gritty, truthful, and multi-level.

Like his other sports novels, the book is authentic in its portrayal of high school athletes, their pressures, their boosters, coaches, and the like. Most reviewers have perceived Coley Burke as a sympathetic character with the courage to be (and become).

Maybe Patty Campbell needs to go back to the muffin tin; she might learn something.

This book reviews the phylogenetic data derived from molecular methods and from classical morphology, and analyses the contribution each can make to the study of evolution. Molecular biology and traditional areas of evolutionary biology such as morphology have not enjoyed a particularly happy marriage. Molecular biologists have the advantages of modernity, high technology, and visibility: their results often seem to represent the cutting edge of science, superseding and outmoding what went before. A fail attempt to explain complicated concepts.......2000-03-21

This book is very easy to read since it targets undergraduate, mostly sophomore or junior. Cengel tries to explain heat and mass transfer concept using long paragraph to read as an attempt to avoid formula derivation.

This attempt is a horrible approach since students will not truly understand the concepts. Proper derivation should be printed as a mathematical proof/background.

A lot of error in the printing caused the problems inconvenient to solve. The nice feature of this book is that it provides important data in both SI and English units.

Very good presentation of material but many errors.......1999-05-04

The book presents the material in an easy to understand manner. The illustrations are superb and the main ideas and relavant equations are highlighted. The book however, contains numerous errors. There are problems at the end of chapters where different numbers are used in the solution than those given in the problem statement. These errors are widespread throughout the text. There are other problems with information given, for example equation 6-48 on page 374 where there are errors in the signs used.

The first heat transfer text written in plan English.......1999-04-13

Dr. Cengel presents a balanced coverage of the major topics in heat transfer. He also adds three chapters dealing with practical applications not found in most heat transfer text books. Dr. Cengel also includes numerous practical problems to help the reader learn and understand each concept. The problems are "real-life" in nature which aids the understanding of the more difficult concepts. The one short-fall in this text is that some of the more technical aspects helpful to the professional engineer are lost in the student-friendly translation. The text references the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software, describe in an Appendix, which provides a useful means for computer analyses of the problems.
