Book Description

The day I entered the classroom
for the very first time,
I was floating on a cloud of happiness.

For ten-year-old Dora Cookson, going to school for the first time is a dream come true. After moving from Utah to a homestead in New Mexico, Dora can't wait to start school, to learn, and to make new friends. There's only one problem -- Dora may be as old as the fourth graders, but she has to start in the first grade. Some kids snicker and say it's because she's dumb. But one girl named Cora Beth doesn't think so, and becomes Dora's first friend at school.

Soon Dora and Cora Beth are doing just about everything together, from practicing writing and spelling to playing with their favorite dolls to jumping rope. With the help of Cora Beth and her teacher, Dora is working hard to catch up to her grade. Then an unexpected event changes their lives forever. After tragedy strikes, will Dora be able to catch up and pass the test to get into the fifth grade? Or are other things more important now?

5 out of 5 stars new kid.......2006-02-02

Climbing the Rainbow is a great story, and is a really fast read. The story takes place in Utah, which is where Dora Cookson has recently moved to from Mexico City. I really enjoyed this story, because I could relate to it so well. When I was fourteen years old my family moved to Idaho from Colorado, because my grandmother died. My family was the only family my grandfather had left, so we moved here to be with him. It was very hard for me to be a teenager, and move to a new town. Many people were very rude and not open to making friends with me. Dora had the same problem. Cora Beth noticed Dora's pain, and introduced herself. Katherine, who I am still best friends with today, did the same for me as Cora Beth did for Dora. Through this whole book I felt for Dora, because I have been in her shoes. It is hard to make new friends, especially during the teenage years. If you have ever been a new kid, or opened up to a new kid, this book would be great for you to read. You will be able to relate!

4 out of 5 stars Climbers Galore.......2000-05-01

A beautifully photographed subject, the text provides outstanding detail on different plant varieties in addition to general information on climbers--growing them and sustaining them. The book is organized by types of climbers and I will say it expanded my thinking about climbers and their uses. An excellent three pages on care and cultivation, with pruning diagrams. Those might just be worth the price of the book itself. The downside is that it is not area specific and I wonder which of those in the book are either available or suitable for southern California.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, up to a certain point.......2003-12-05

My Nepali boyfriend gave me this little book to learn his language, since when I met him, I had nothing good to say about his country because I knew nothing about it. I was grateful for alot of things in the book, like grammer, sentence structure, who you speak to, cultural tips, etc. But I found the pronunciation guide horrible. They do not explain the differences between many sounds, and only explain certain consonants. They introduce the Devanagari script rather suddenly with no explanation. It would be helpful to know HOW to read it and understand what is written instead of just recognizing it by sight and nothing else, although that is good too.

The dictionary was helpful in the back, but very limited. It only went over words mentioned in the book, and didn't broaden words from outside of what was reviewed. I liked the book as a starter...but even my boyfriend admitted that some things were not said right. (Not as they speak it today, it's too old-fashioned, etc.) I kept having to go to him and ask him things, and the whole point of me having the book was so he wouldn't have to try and teach me. (hahahaha)

So, I guess I would recommend it to people who know nothing about Nepali, but be sure to have someone to ask questions. It's bad enough when you are running blind with a language you haven't heard of before.

5 out of 5 stars Handy little phrasebook at a nice cheap price.......2003-05-29

I was surprised that the two reviews prior to mine gave such a bad rating. Well, I'm half-Indian, I was born in the north-east of India near the Himalayas with very close contact with Nepalis in my early childhood and I couldn't actually see what the problem was with this book! It's small, compact, glossy, useful and very cheap, I mean what else do you want if you are only looking for the basics.

However, I can read and speak Hindi and know basic customs (which are actually explained in the phrasebook, for example food etiquette) so perhaps that made a difference. Hindi is closely related to Nepali and written in the same Devanagari script. You can actually learn the Devanagari script from this phrasebook which I find sets the Lonely Planet phrasebooks above most phrasebooks. If you don't want to learn the script, then the phonetic tranliteration system used is the correct one generally used by linguists, which ensures a word is correctly pronounced by the student, even when reading in English. This is why I prefer Lonely Planet phrasebooks as once you master the basics of script and pronunciation along with basic grammar (yes, it has a solid basic grammar section as well) you actually have a good base to further learn the language if you want.

I found the phrases in it very useful. You get a very good starting point for customs, ordering food, hotel rooms etc. As I said, it's also in a nice, very small size. Amazing actually how much information is packed in considering how small the phrasebook is.

2 out of 5 stars Just buy the book in Nepal.......2002-01-05

And you find better ones. Lonley planet again fails to deliver with yet another product. The organization is poor, bad choice of phrases, etc..

Heres a tip: skip the book, goto Nepal, meet some Nepali's talk with them, learn a little, then go to the millions of bookstores in Khatmandhu and find a book that fits your needs.

It may be this one, but I doubt it.

2 out of 5 stars Not a bad dictionary, but..........2000-01-26

The dictionary in the back was helpful, but the organization of the book is not very good and it is awful in explaining pronunciation. After studying it faithfully and trying it out, my Nepali friends, finally, asked in English, "What are you trying to say?" I also learned that some of the information was inaccurate. I hate to speak badly of it, since it is about the only Nepali language travel book on the market, but, hopefully Lonely Planet will consider an overhaul.

There's a cheetah by you, watch out! Help my baby is missing. Did the gorillas take her? Will you help me? Hey why is your friend Halverson trying to take a baby gorilla? Oh you just got snared in a poacher's trap, ouch! It's starting to rain, and I hear there's cholera in the air. What's a movie crew doing here? Learn about matsuko meadows!! You have an appointment to meet Mweri, who can guide you to look for the gorillas, but you don't see him yet. Should you wait for him, or continue on without him? This book has a great variety of good and bad endings, and then some okay ones. The action and stories can be slow, but most of the endings have enough differentiation to be appealing to many readers. This was the fourth qm book I read. I was expecting it to help me make the transition from quantum mechanics to quantum chemistry, but it didn't quiet succeed in doing so. As for QM there exist better books than this (eg Sakurai) and for QChem, I found Szabo's book to be much more better (with less of fundamentals and directly going towards applications)

5 out of 5 stars Philosophy: By Socrates, Quantum Chemistry: By Linus Pauling.......2004-06-29

How would an "Introduction to Philosophy" by Socrates or a "Basics of the Piano" by Mozart sound like? This is something similar. Linus Pauling, the unprecedented pioneer of the application of Quantum Mechanics to Chemistry, had written this book in the 1930s as perhaps the first introduction to QM for Chemists, supported by his colleague, E Bright Wilson, a brilliant chemist in his own right. A generation of Chemists grew up learning from this book, and its content is as relevant and articulate today as it was then. Hundreds of Quantum Chemistry books, some of which are excellent, have been written in the times since it was first published. But this book still retains an incomparable flavour that brings out the fundamental nature of QM and Chemical Bonding. I have to admit that I found this book slightly difficult, because Pauling and Wilson, although being extremely lucid, never compromise on the Math. But gradually I learnt that this is the kind of book which belongs in the same category of, say, Ernest Eliel's stereochemistry book. That means that every moment you spent on it will be worth it, even if it takes you a very long time to go through it. This is one of those books where every word is carefully thought and then stated, making the journey difficult at places, but always rewarding. And why not. It is hard to imagine anyone else writing with so much confidence on the topic. So it is important not to gloss over this book quickly and then discard it as being dry, but persist in reading it and get insight out of it. The book opens with a discussion of Lagrangian mechanics and discusses some simple examples of its applications. It then moves on to the basic principles of QM, and comes to the Hydrogen molecule, which was the pinnacle of succcess for the Physicists. I think that this book has the best discussion of the H molecule ever written. I have seen other excellent Quantum Chemistry books giving a reference to this work whenever they discuss the H molecule. Moreover, I believe that a thorough understanding of the H molecule is of paramount importance for understanding any further application of QM to Chemistry. Discussion of this molecule opens the door to understanding orbitals, spherical harmonics, angular momentum and all the important concepts in theoretical Chemistry. So the book will score top points for this alone. Later on there are excellent discussions of the Variational Method, Perturbation theory and finally the various important approximations like Hartree-Fock theory and the structure of molecules. The appendices deal with detailed discussions of derivation and some mathematical topics. All in all, a clear and extremely lucid presentation, well worth every moment you can spend on it, by one of the greatest scientists of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but goodie.......2003-09-12

This is a great, simple presentation of the Schroedinger viewpoint. There is no Dirac representation and no matrix mechanics. However, there is much to be liked about this book and it is a pleasure to read. Those who are baffled completely by quantum mechanics will find this an enlightening introduction and a simple understandable place to start. This is another one of those lesser known gems.

5 out of 5 stars Simple with everything.......2002-12-19

If you are an undergraduate and you want everything you need, this is the book. The lack of matrix mechanics makes this book unsuitable for serious graduate students, though. I think it would actually be best for 1st or 2nd year serious undergraduate chemists who are well acquainted with differential equations.

5 out of 5 stars Richly historical account of molecular quantum mechanics.......2002-06-12

In many ways, this is still my favourite quantum mechanics text. Why? Because the text is completely grounded in the quantum mechanics of atoms and molecules.

Historically, Linus Pauling spent his post-doc working throughout Europe where he absorbed the, then, new theory of quantum mechanics. However, the physicists that he learnt q.m. from only analysed the physics of, relatively simple, atomic systems. It would require someone with an immense breadth of knowledge in chemistry to make quantum mechanics come alive for molecules. This was Linus Pauling. Pauling first applied q.m. to such diverse topics as: the chemical bond, resonance energy, electronegativity, crystal structure of molecules and hydrogen bonds.

And it shows. The uniqueness of this q.m. textbook is that it gives immensely detailed references to the different ways the early physicists/chemists attacked the q.m. of bonds in molecules. Many different ansatz's and approximations to pertubation problems are given. And Pauling should know, for he was right in the thick of it. The historical value of these references alone is worth the price of this book. It's a real shame that most modern books leave these out, because a discussion of these approximations methods give a lot of insight to q.m. in molecules.

In contrast, I find modern textbooks on physical chemistry to be often lacking in deep physical insight. However, textbooks written by physicists run into all sorts of esoteric directions like quantum entanglement and the uncertainty principle and as a previous reviewer noted, Pauling's books says nothing about scattering and hardly anything on spin. This is probably because chemists aren't interested in what happens to particles in beams or Stern-Gerlach experiments. They are more interested in ionisation energy, enthalpies and bond energies.

Nevertheless, for out-and-out modern-day quantum physicists, Pauling's explanation of aspects of quantum mechanics will seem quaint, overly pictorial and concrete, e.g. discussion of *actual* orbits. And it is. However, for chemists and even atomic physicists, pondering such esoteric questions clouds the immense power of quantum mechanics in explaining the detailed properties of atoms and molecules.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Creol blues.......2003-01-25

I came on this book by chance, having never heard or Kate Chopin or her more famous book "The Awakening." This slim volume of short stories is my only experience with her still.

The easy pace of the stories, the charming lilt and rhythm of the dialogs, gives a good impression of bayou life, something that I am not very familiar with. Pace is something in common with all of the selections, with none of the characters getting very excited or overwrought, even in the midst of a fight or falling in love. "The Big Easy," they call it, and I believe it from these tales. They are small, psychological portraits, well written and engaging.

"Desirees Baby" was an almost Lovecraftian psychological horror tale, of hidden ancestries creeping unwanted across generations. "The Dream of an Hour" is in a similar vein, with a twist ending. Most of the stories are gentle, understated love stories both romantic ("A Night in Acadie") sad ("At the Cadian Ball," "Azelie,"), forbidden ("A Respectable Woman") and funny ("Madame Celestins Divorce.") I must admit to being charmed by each love story, and hoped the best for everyone involved. "A Pair of Silk Stockings" and "A Gentleman of the Bayou Teche" are both brief glimpses into a small world, and equally good.

I am glad to be introduced to Kate Chopin, and look forward to seeking out "The Awakening."

The first story alone was worth the [money] I paid for this book. It was a sad, gentle social commentary (or maybe not so gentle) that seems very much like the work of someone who would raise so much public outcry (for "The Awakening") that she would never be published again. One or two of the stories struck me as being bitter, but the others were up to her current day reputation. Many of the stories hinge on careful character studies of Acadians, the Acadians being descendants of French families relocated to the United States when Canada become unarguably British. The French dialect used in some of the stories only made the collection richer, in my mind. It would have seemed false to have these people speaking proper English. On reading the other reviews, I tend to agree that it might be a good idea to skip this book and buy Bayou Folk or another more thorough collection. If you know you love Kate Chopin's writing, do that. Otherwise, this collection is a good introduction although it can't beat "The Awakening."

Some of these stories were a mere five pages long, so when i first started reading this collection, i thought i'd be done in no time at all. Of course, i had not realized Kate Chopin had some of her characters speak in dialect. This is something that i have never been able to overcome. There is a reason why written language is standardized, so that it is comprehensible! I don't care if it's in English or Spanish; i have a hard time going through that kind of text. Those stories took me a long time to read, and eventually i lost interest and skipped through entire paragraphs.

The best story, in my opinion, is the one that gives name to the collection. We are creature comforts, and need the occasional pampering. The woman in the story lets herself be spoiled just for one day, no matter how good and unselfish her intentions were for the money. I can identify with her weakness.

The 'romantic' stories were quite bland, and that, combined with the incomprehensible Acadian-speak, did not leave me with a good impression about this author.

5 out of 5 stars A Pair of Silk Stockings.......2000-02-17

Truthfully, I have not read this whole book. What I have read, however, is Kate Chopin's "The Awakening" (which was wonderful) and the title story for this book--"A Pair of Silk Stockings." In my opinion, both were wonderful and everyone should read Chopin. "...Silk Stockings" is a wonderful, meaningful piece although I suppose that some people just cannot see the true depth of such a story.

                                          3 out of 5 stars Mish-Mash.......1999-12-12

Of course I love all of Kate Chopin's work, but this collection overlaps with both Bayou Folk and A Night in Acadie (which one can purchase from Penguin Classics in a complete volume). The only real treasure in this book is a story that may be tricky to find: The Dream of an Hour. The title story is no great shakes. I would recommend buying her more comprehensive collections of stories and using this booklet (9 stories) as a filler for a few missing works. At 80 cents, who can loose?
