Plant litter and fine roots are important carbon (C) inputs to soil and a direct source of CO"2 to the atmosphere. Solid-state carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (^1^3C-NMR) spectroscopy was used to investigate the nature of C changes during decomposition of plant litter and fine roots of mulga (Acacia aneura F. Muell. Ex. Benth.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), lucerne (Medicago sativa) and buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) over an 18-month period. Alkyl C was closely associated with total N concentrations in all litter materials during decay and as alkyl C increased so did total N, indicating an increase in refractory biomacromolecules. Mulga phyllodes had the greatest alkyl C concentration of all litter and fine root materials, and also exhibited the NMR peaks assigned to tannins that may slow or hinder decomposition rates and nitrification. Mulga litter and fine roots decomposed slower than all other litter materials and the soil under mulga had the highest soil C concentration, indicating slower CO"2 release. The alkyl C-to-O-alkyl C ratio is generally used as an index of the extent of decomposition, but is not useful for the decay of woody components. Of all the NMR ratios studied that may indicate the extent of decomposition, the carbohydrate C-to-methoxyl C ratio proved to have the strongest and most consistent relationship with decay time, fraction of mass remaining and total C, even though increases in alkyl C were observed with decreases in carbohydrate C.

Horrible, I hated it.......2000-01-16

If ever their was an author that should have never learned to write, it is R.L. Stine. After reading this awful book I have found many similarities between this and Goosebumps. His writing is bland and I can predict exactly what is going to happen. The reason why? Because he used the same plot in about 14 other books just with different names. If there was a lower score, I would have used it. R.L. Stine I pity you.

Great Author. Great Idea. Not So Great Book..........1999-09-23

After waiting months to finally get my hands on the book I was not so pleased with what I read. Considering that I like Indiana, and liked RL Stine I figured it would be a good book. Well the plot was okay and the characters were fairly established, but if every time that Indiana is written in the book they replaced it with "Steve Waserbach" it wouldn't have made a difference! It was not Indiana Jones! The setting wasn't an Indiana Jones like setting! How many times have you pictured Indiana Jones going fishing with some 13 year old for fun? I don't think so!

Lattice-gas cellular automata (LGCA) and lattice Boltzmann models (LBM) are relatively new and promising methods for the numerical solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. The book provides an introduction for graduate students and researchers. Working knowledge of calculus is required and experience in PDEs and fluid dynamics is recommended. Some peculiarities of cellular automata are outlined in Chapter 2. The properties of various LGCA and special coding techniques are discussed in Chapter 3. Concepts from statistical mechanics (Chapter 4) provide the necessary theoretical background for LGCA and LBM. The properties of lattice Boltzmann models and a method for their construction are presented in Chapter 5.

This is an outstanding book for anyone concerned with computational models of real physical processes (digital mechanics or digital physics). It is accessible to anyone with a bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or physics. It is also accessible to others with a few years of math courses. Lattice gasses and lattice boltzmann machines are the natural extensions of cellular automata such as the game of life.

Really quite good.......2007-05-06

The stories are very good, and paint a suprisingly vidid picture. Nigel Bruce is a standout as always. I found that sitting quietly in a room listening to the "radio" was a bit dull, and was obviously replaced with television for good reason. However, while commuting, a long car trip, or on a flight, this radio series is an excellent way to enjoy the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The old time commercials are a great touch.

I can only add my enthusiastic approval to that of the previous reviewers -- here is a happier world of mystery, mood, and the magic of radio, where two fine actors bring the beloved Holmes & Watson to glorious life. The period commercials are a delightful bonus, as is the ever-present organ music. The stories themselves are superb examples of pastiche, written with a deep knowledge & understanding of the characters. But in the end, it's those wonderful actors, Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce, who bring the listener back time & time again. Was there ever a Holmes as precise & eloquently spoken as Rathbone's? And while Watson was actually a stronger figure in the Doyle originals, who can resist the warm, avuncular version of Nigel Bruce, all "Harrumph!" with a jolly twinkle in his befuddled eye? So sit back, relax with your glass of Petri wine, and let these long-ago voices return you to a golden age. You'll want to get every collection in this series -- most highly recommended!

The radio programs are exactly as they were 70 years ago, crisp, new refereshing, a time when the world lay on the brink of world war, here people could forget for awhile. I have all 4 sets of the series, it is a must for anyone wishing to slip back in time and hear what the imagination can conjure up.

FLAWED.......2006-01-26

When I learned Simon and Schuster was re-releasing this set on CD, I hoped they addressed the problems with the cassette versions released in the late '80s. They didn't. Oddly, the episodes on the first three discs have some of the original commercials and/or portions of the announcer's closing banter with Watson edited out, bringing the run time to about 25 minutes instead of the full half-hour. To serious collectors of old-time radio, this is unacceptable, especially when the packaging in effect states the programs are presented as they were originally broadcast. The rest of episodes are intact. No idea what possessed S & S to do this, but here we are. Secondly, depending on the episode, the audio restoration is a bit heavy-handed. Too much noise reduction and processing has resulted in some words and bits of dialogue sounding clipped or chopped off. The shows should have been re-mastered for the CD release. These may be picayune issues to most people, but to others like me, they're not.

A great example of Radio's Golden Years.......2005-09-30

Unedited Radio Broadcasts from the late 30's and 40's with Rathbone and Bruce at their best. Originally released on Cassette many years ago but now for the first time on CD. Highly recommended.
