Clearly written, accurate, and informative........1999-03-21
We used Offa's Dyke Path South by Kay et al to walk from Capel-y-Ffin to Knighton in the Summer of 1998. The trail was clearly and accurately explained and historical notes made our three day journey even more enjoyable. The maps were good, however I would recommend that you still take a compas and ordnance survey map, just in case. In conclusion, we found the Guide was well worth the purchase price and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone considering walking Offa's Dyke Pathway.

Follow Your Hopes and Wishes.......2007-05-25
The Rookie Arrives By: Thomas J. Dygard. If you're somebody who likes good sport story, this is one for you. It has all the thinks that are good about sports. You have a rookie coming out of high school thinking he is going to be the best and you know how a rookie has a major ego and never turns out to be what he thought. This player, Ted, gets his shot in the majors, but after a couple of months he doesn't think this was the best decision, until... he gets his chance to show himself. There are no dislikes I had for this book. It is a all around good book. This book makes you won't to follow your dreams and try as hard as you can for something you want to do and eventually you will get your shot.
The Rookie Arrives .......2006-02-04
Ted Bell is a high school graduate. Baseball is his favorite sport, and this would be his dream career. Soo Ted is signed with the Kansas City Royals. He is begining his new career. But there is one problem Ted is not playing out on the field, someone else is out there replacing him. There are times that he does play, but that doent work for him. Will he be able to Play??
For Baseball Fans.......2004-04-06
In the book The Rookie Arrives the main character (Ted Bell) is a cocky, self-centered 19 year old that has just graduated from Genoa High School in Oklahoma. On the baseball diamond he is a star third baseman and at the plate, really crushes the ball. When he receives word that he has been drafted by the Kansas City Royals, he thinks that he will automatically get the starting job at third base with out being tested first. He is wrong. The Royals already have an all-star third baseman (Lou Mills) that is solid in the field as well as the plate. But when Lou is invited to play in the all-star game he is hit by a pitch and becomes disabled for a month. Will Ted strikeout or will he go over the wall and touch'em all?
In this book Mr. Dygard does a great job of making you feel like you are in a rookie baseball players shoes. He instills a sense wonder for the new cities that Ted experiences on the road games, and the awe that he feels the first time he steps into the realm of major league baseball. When I read this book I felt as if I were ready to be the next baseball legend.
The Rookie.......2002-03-23
The Rookie Arrives is an excellent book because the book tells you that you have to be patient to achieve a goal. This book is about a star baseball player named Ted Bell.Ted Bell is an excellent baseball player and enters his name in the MLB draft. He gets drafted by the Kansas City Royals. He is impatient and wants to play, but little does he know,he just had to be patient.
A Rookie Arrives.......2001-05-03
In the book The Rookie Arrives by Thomas Dygard, Ted Bell is a high school all American superstar baseball player. He gets drafted by the Kansas City Royals right out of high school. The story tells about how hard it is for athletes turning pro right out of high school. It goes through how hard it really is to be in the major leagues. Dygard does a good job telling the life of an athlete that is very talented. He also explains the harsh side of being a professional and never getting a chance to play. Dygard's message is that a lot of athletes should continue in school to get more experience at an even higher level. The main character, Ted, goes through a lot in this story but his main goal in life is to play in the major leagues, not to play for a big college team. He turns pro against his parents will and with having a lot of colleges wanting him. I would recommend this book to everyone because Dygard explains how many young athletes dream of playing pro and will go through almost anything to get their. I especially recommend this book to the people who have a problem with athletes leaving school early to turn pro and have never had a passion or a love for a game.

If you are into baseball The Rookie Arrives by Thomas J. Dygard is the book for you. Ted Bell and the Kansas City Royals travel all around America to play baseball games. Ted Bell makes the Royals baseball team, straight out of high school.
This is a must read book because its exiting, and adventurous. You will keep wanting to turn the pages. See if Ted Bell gets starting shortstop for the Kansas City Royals.
The author who wrote this book has written many more books. Thomas Dygard was born August 10, 1931, and died in 1996. He lived in America and the state was Arkansas. You have to read this book I give it 2 BIG thumbs up!

The Rookie Arrives By Rocky Nikci.......2006-11-06
If you think that a rookie in any sport can't do anything that
spectacular than a veteran think again. A rookie from
Genoa High School gets drafted to a major league team call
the Kansas City Royals. When this rookie got drafted he
expects to be playing third base. Instead hes on the bench
watching a veteran play third base.
The fictional book that I read was The Rookie Arrives
by Thomas J. Dygard. The Rookie Arrives was the winning
book by Thomas J. Dygard. Thomas J. Dygard made other
action sports books like Halfback Tough, Outside Shooter,
Point Spread, Quarterback Walk-On, Rebound Caper,
Running Scared, Soccer Duel, Tournament Upstart,
Wilderness Peril, and Winning Kicker.
The main character of this story is Ted Bell. Hes a
rookie third basemen that got called on by the Kansas City
Royals from Genoa High School. Ted a person who is
expected to play third base, doesn't.The veteran Lou Mills
is playing third base. So now the rookie Ted is sitting on
the bench until the All-Star game. The veteran Lou Mills is
the starting third basemen for the American league. On the
veterans first at bat he gets hit on the hand by the baseball.
Now rookie Ted Bell has a chance to show manager Hank
Quincy and his other teammates what he can do.
The setting of the story is in a hotel, on a baseball
field, in New York, Chicago, Kansas City, Milwaukee, and
Toronto. When rookie Ted Bell gets his very first pinch hit
Major League home run off of Buster Krump. Since Lou
Mills was out for a month Ted Bell was the spotlight man
he did amazing fielding and hitting. In Ted Bells fielding
he had only 3 errors and amazing play such as diving plays
and plays stop the from going to left field. Ted Bells
Hitting was amazing 7 singles 4 doubles and 6 home runs.
The biggest thing went wrong Ted Bell got himself in a
slump. He was hitting horrible, than his fielding was bad.
Than one day in a hotel Cal, Boyd, and Bomba told Ted
that were are going the ballpark to stop your slump. After
swing after swing after swing and after game after game
after game Ted finally got out of his slump. Since after his
slump Ted Bell was fielding and hitting better. Than
veteran Lou Mills has returned.
I recommend this book to people who likes action and
sports books. I think that this book was excellent I liked
how the author expresses Teds feelings about things that
come up.
Inconclusion, the return of Lou Mills shocked Ted Bell
and thought that he would not play third base anymore but
the help of relief pitcher Cal Hanley told Ted to wait and
the time will come. The time came when Ted Bell called
Cal and Ted said when will my time come Cal than said it
came veteran Lou Mills is getting traded, Cal said it was
announced by manager Hank Quincy. Ted Bell will now
become the everyday third basemen for the Kansas City
Royals.

Book Description
Microbial growth and contamination ("Biofouling") in water systems represents a significant threat to the quality of waters produced for the microelectronic, pharmaceutical, petroleum, paper, food and other manufacturing industries. Biofouling can lead to biologically induced corrosion ("Biocorrosion"), which can cause severe damage to the equipment. Both biofouling and biocorrosion are frequently not recognized in time, underestimated, or linked with the wrong causes. The book represents a new approach by introducing biofilm properties and dynamics as basic principles of biofouling and biocorrosion, thus providing a better understanding and the means of fighting the undesired effects of biofilms. The most important features are: Case histories of biofouling in water treatment.- Detection and monitoring of biofouling.- Reverse osmosis membrane biofouling.- Biocide efficacy and biofouling control.- Plant design considerations for preventing biofouling.- Case histories of biocorrosion.- Detection, monitoring, control and prevention of biocorrosion.- Fundamentals of biofouling and biocorrosion mechanisms.

Book Description
For fans of Brian Greene and Stephen Hawking, a guide to the most important theory in modern physics, in a tour de force of science writing
There are two scientific theories that, taken together, explain the entire universe. The first, which describes the force of gravity, is widely known: Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. But the theory that explains everything elsethe Standard Model of Elementary Particlesis virtually unknown among the general public.
In The Theory of Almost Everything, Robert Oerter shows how what were once thought to be separate forces of nature were combined into a single theory by some of the most brilliant minds of the twentieth century. Rich with accessible analogies and lucid prose, The Theory of Almost Everything celebrates a heretofore unsung achievement in human knowledgeand reveals the sublime structure that underlies the world as we know it. BACKCOVER: This highly accessible volume explains the Standard Model to the everyman, using literary references and easy-to-follow analogies to make clear mind-bending physics principles.

Customer Reviews:
Best introduction for a layman.......2007-06-14
"The Theory of Almost Everything" is an excellent book, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The early parts may seem a little turgid for anyone who has already encountered the subject, but Oerter's approach justifies the reading.
I am particularly impressed with the way Oerter establishes the equivalence of the Schwinger and Feynman approaches, and then moves seamlessly between them to explain various aspects of the Standard Model.
Oerter's description of the Lagrangian and its role - potentially difficult stuff, is presented with great clarity and finesse.
His dispassionate coverage of the limitations of the Standard Model, towards the end of the book, is also highly commended: For all of its accomplishments, the Standard Model clearly is only a step along the way.
Having previously read recent works by Bruce Schumm and Martinus Veltman (both of which I also enjoyed), I would recommend Robert Oerter's book, "The Theory of Almost Everything," as the best layman's introduction to the Standard Model that I have encountered.
useful, but uneven.......2007-01-08
The early chapters of the book are so condescending that I nearly put the book down. The author's needlessly lowbrow examples include soccer moms, ants on rollerblades, and pandering digs at Republicans. Corny humor abounds-- high school computer nerd humor. It really gets annoying, so be forewarned.
But if you stick it out until the middle chapters, the book starts showing a bit more respect for the reader (though the corny humor continually remerges every 10 pages or so). After beginning too simply, the book almost becomes too dense and difficult by the end, but there's a nice middle ground about halfway through where everything starts to come together.
In intellectual terms, what I like best about this book is that it does teach the reader many things that are not to be found in other popular physics books. What I like least, other than the condescending jokes and politically correct grandstanding, is the lack of any sense of drama in the book. The author states from the start that he is giving a systematic overview of the standard model, not a history. But oftentimes it's difficult to give the former without a good dose of the latter (see the brilliant and ultra-dramatic history of nuclear physics in the first several hundred pages of Richard Rhodes, *The Making of the Atomic Bomb*. I wish Rhodes had written a history of the standard model.)
I'd recommend browsing this book in a library, since it's a good quick read but not one that you're likely to consult multiple times. I already feel kind of dumb for buying it so trustingly. But in all fairness, you'll learn something here. Just be ready to hold your nose now and then.
Interesting and readable.......2006-10-27
I found this book to be an interesting and readable introduction to the modern theory of particle physics. One does not have to be a professional physicist to understand this book, and I came off with a lot of useful understanding, much more than I had when I first opened the book.
There is one serious criticism I have of the book, which occasions my giving it only four stars and not five. The author seems not to have a clear picture of the level of reader he is writing for. He introduces equations, which may put off a total novice, although he doesn't really USE the equations, and might as well leave them out and be more inviting to such a novice. But for someone like myself, with a background in a related subject (quantum chemistry), a little more delving into the equations and their consequences might be useful. It has been said that each quuation added to a book cuts its potential audience by half; the author almost deliberately flouts this dogma, while not taking advantage of any additional understanding that might be gained by going into the equations.
But the writing itself is very readable, and I recommend this book.
thrilling!.......2006-09-28
I'm a physicist, but not a particle physicist. I like reading books written for the layperson. I can broaden my knowledge a bit, and for topics I know well I can enjoy reading how someone else explains these topics. It's always helpful to have a background in physics when reading these kinds of books, but I think this book would read well for any curious reader.
It seemed like a fascinating mystery novel to me. Even though I knew what the book was building up to (the Standard Model), I was excited to see how the plot unfolded. The writing is very smooth and comfortable. I had a hard time putting it down. I brought it to the beach with me.
I recommend reading it twice. If you read it carefully the first time and are still confused, then a second read might straighten much of that out. You may find that some topics are still confusing. With this subject, you can't expect miracles!
I'm glad the author mentioned string theory. Some particle physicists are so defensive about the Standard Model that they wouldn't mention string theory. For further study on string theory, read Elegant Universe by Brian Greene.
Overall, a great book! Well written, and fun to read.
Good, clear book.......2006-03-26
I write this review as a frequent reader of physics books, not a professional of physics. I have found the book very clear. It gives a good overview of the Standard Model, avoiding the most speculative and innovative theories that are the focus of most of the best-seller books in the last years. It is easy to understand, although you need to have certain knowledge in particle physics, and provides with a good introduction to the main "confirmed" theories in this field.
I have not awarded the fifth star because I think there are other books that are superior to this, such as "Deep Down Things" or "The Fabric of the Cosmos" (with a different scope). Anyway, my global perception is that it is a very good book.

Customer Reviews:
Quiet and quirky.......2003-11-12
Much of this little book works as well today as seven hundred years ago, when it was written. The observations on people and their manners sound a little old-fashioned, but still applicable.
At another level, this book is credited with the first clear statements of esthetic principles that guide modern Japanese design. The translator's footnotes show how it draws on works from Confucius, Lao Tzu, and other Chinese classics in building a uniquely Japanese text. I believe the translator missed an allusion to Chuang Tzu in essay number 42, but that does not detract from the generally high quality of scholarship in this presentation. This is a remarkable, first-person statement of the sources of Japanese culture.
Finally, these essays are uniquely products of their place and time. Kenko's view, as a monk, of the secular world affects nearly every essay.
Shonagon's 'Pillow Book' introduced me to traditional Japanese literature. This book, with all its similarities and differences, is a wonderful way to continue that friendship.
A delicious little book.......2001-03-08
The Wordsworth Classics here presents a nice translation by G.B. Sansom of a classic, the Tsurezuregusa of Yoshida Kenko, written around 1330 by a Japanese monk. The format of the work is reminiscent of the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon - short observations, bits of memoir, commentary on the manners and morals of people around him.
There's a minimum of footnoting and the translator's style is smooth and readable. It's a dipping book which will appeal to modern Buddhists and pensive readers alike. As Kenko himself says:
"To sit alone in the lamplight with a book spread out before you, and hold intimate converse with men of unseen generations - such is a pleasure beyond compare."
Spanning the ages.......2000-08-07
Good literature is sometimes called "news that stays news" (originally refering to art). Kenko's work is very much that, as it is simply the random, frank thoughts of a man who lived through a time of great upheval and was involved with many tiers of society. The candor expressed by Kenko regarding life and living rings true with many people in many nations in many times.
Although a certain amount of life experience is certainly necessary before a full aprectiation of Kenko's words can be had, this work still has something for most anyone. It can also serve as an introduction to medieval Japan and Japanese thought. While certainly Kenko's views on things were not the only ones of the time, they represent an ethic and aesthetic that saw its formation around this time and serves as an important guide to understanding the philosophies which developed in Japan.
Keene's translation is one of the few around, and probably the most accurate and easily readable. Though too "literary" at times (the original being "literary", but still strait forward in expression), with a few mistranlsations here and there (though perhaps intentionally so, given the gap in the languages), it still offeres enough to get the feel of the original.
For all you students, this will be a good start into one aspect of Japanese literature, but use this as a stepping stone in to reading original text. The original is not that hard, and a fairly direct translation will help.
Kenko's Time-capsule: A Cultural Survey.......1999-04-09
Anyone interested in or studying Japanese history/literature/culture should read this book. It contains a series of short essays (zuihitsu) and reads much like Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book. These essays range from Kenko's moral opinions about various aspects of life to his aesthetic tastes and thoughts about beauty. These essays are Kenko's opinion, yet they can be taken as the opinions of Japan's society at the time of the writing. Therefore there is a great deal of interesting cultural information and meaning behind Kenko's words. So if you are interested in Japanese Buddhism or religion, this book's a must.
If you are interested in Japanese aesthetics- aware: the idea that beauty is transient/fleeting, wabi-sabi: by becoming aged and through use, an object's history and experience bestow upon it greater value than an object that is new, the idea that uncertainty/non-uniformity/ and incompletion can inspire imagination- by all means read this.
