Good for planning pre-trip, but not as helpful during.......2000-08-14
Our initial impression of the Lonely Planet book was too dense to be useful to us. The Frommer's guide, however, had suggested itineraries based on the time one could spend in New Zealand. Even better, the author, Elizabeth Hansen, was available to "consult" on the trip on an hourly basis. Because we'd be toting our 18-month old, we used her services and pre-booked the entire trip.
Once there, we found the Lonely Planet book much more useful. The Lonely Planet guide excels at providing abundant information about towns, including attractions, restaurants and maps giving a rough layout.
For example, one of the folks at a Visitor center clued us into Farewell Spit, an area we were going to forego because it was well off our chosen route. As it turned out, Tahuna Park, our campground in Nelson was pretty bad (right under an airport takeoff path; lots of people permanently living there; undermaintained kitchens), and we didn't relish the idea of spending three days there as originally planned.
The side trip to Farewell Spit was long and we'd have to find some place relatively nearby to the Spit to make it a reasonable trip. Unfortunately, this is where the Frommer's guide was very weak. It caters more to the B&B crowd, and there isn't that much north (or west) of Nelson. The Lonely Planet book, however, paid for itself by suggesting a lot of options, providing maps of the little towns, and listing restaurants where we might stop at for "snack time."
In summary: The Frommer's book is helpful for initially planning your trip.
The Frommer's book has more of a focus on higher-end accomodations, e.g., motels or beds and breakfasts, and covers a smaller area. This is not such a big deal unless you want to venture too far off the beaten path.
We felt the author's services were worthwhile.
Don't underestimate the value of the Visitor Centers scattered throughout New Zealand. They were generally very good at providing local information. Most will also book special activities for you.

Now I wanna watch the movie again . . ........2004-01-22
I finished this book in less than hour - it's only 170 pages long, but it certainly doesn't feel/look that long. Even a slow reader will finish this book in no time.
This is one of my fave films, and I love getting the books based on films or films based on books. This book was a definite exception, as most of them aren't very good. This definitely makes you want to watch the film all over again, reliving the best moments. Of course, some of the sex talk is cut from the book, and some other dialogue is missing - not that I can figure out WHICH, I haven't watched the film in a few months.
The chapters aren't very long, and some chapters - especially Cameron's - sometimes only have ONE line! Which is quite funny. I found Kat's chapters to be the funniest, especially the first one where she moans about her school. Also, in her first chapter, she sees this "mysterious" guy around school - who later we find out is Patrick, this wasn't done in the film.
There's also a great last chapter, from Kat's best friend (the one who LOVES Shakespeare), talking about the original, The Taming Of The Shrew. This last chapter is very interesting, as it explains how the characters got their names from the original.
You also have 8 (very fragile) pages of stills from the movie. The first one isn't shown in the movie, it must have been a cast photo, as it just shows the main characters who have chapters in this book - except Joey of course.
A terrific book for any fan of the movie and it does make it extra-tempting to read The Taming Of The Shrew.
The best book ever!!!.......2002-11-07

This is a great book about teenagers troubles........1999-11-04
This novel deserves a five star rating because it was great and teenagers can really relate to it. Teenagers will enjoy reading this because the characters are very beliveable. For example, Kat is your typical teenager. She lets things get to her sister. Kat loves to antagonize Bianca. What makes it even better is that when Kat finds out that Bianca can't date until she can, she rubs it in really bad. Things are pretty tough on those girls because they live with their very strict father who questions them if they are taking a walk. Their mother left them when they were very young. I can guaratee you that once you start reading 10 Things I Hate About You, you won't want to put the book down.

Book Description
A revision of a successful junior/senior level text, this introduction to elementary quantum mechanics clearly explains the properties of the most important quantum systems. Emphasizes the applications of theory, and contains new material on particle physics, electron-positron annihilation in solids and the Mossbauer effect. Includes new appendices on such topics as crystallography, Fourier Integral Description of a Wave Group, and Time-Independent Perturbation Theory.Customer Reviews:

Great introduction, focused on understanding.......2003-12-05
The first five chapters gives the reader a good insight into the history of Quantum Physics and to why classical mechanics was insufficient. Chapter 6 is an excellent overview of how to solve the Schroedinger Equation in a few specific cases, at the same time as the reader is given a very good "feeling" for how Quantum Mechanics works. The remainder of the chapters focuses on specific situations, applications and phenomena's.
There are plenty of books that use less mathematics, but I do not believe they give a good understanding of the topic. There are also plenty of books that uses a lot more complex mathematics, but they are not for beginners. I recommend this book as an introduction to Quantum Physics for undergraduate physics students, engineers, science professionals, and mathematically literate others.
For reference, these are the chapters in the book:
(1) Thermal Radiation and Plank's Postulate
(2) Photons--Particlelike Properties of Radiation
(3) De Broglie's Postulate--Wavelike Properties of Particles
(4) Bohr's Model of the Atom
(5) Schroedinger's Theory of Quantum Mechanics
(6) Solutions of Time-Independent Schroedinger Equations
(7) One-Electron Atoms
(8) Magnetic Dipole Moments, Spin, and Transition Rates
(9) Multielectron Atoms--Ground States and X-Ray Excitations
(10) Multielectron Atoms--Optical Excitations
(11) Quantum Statistics
(12) Molecules
(13) Solids--Conductors and Semiconductors
(14) Solids--Superconductors and Magnetic Properties
(15) Nuclear Models
(16) Nuclear Decay and Nuclear Reactions
(17) Introduction to Elementary Particles
(18) More Elementary Particles
I liked Appendix A, "The Special Theory of Relativity". In only sixteen pages, the authors succeed to correctly explain the special theory of relativity. I also liked Appendix C, "The Boltzmann Distribution", which was good concise description of classical statistical mechanics (you need to understand it, to understand why it was not good enough).

Dreaming of Hitler: Passions and Provocations
Daphne Merkin Manufacturer: Crown ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0517706261 Release Date: 1997-05-27 |
Book Description
Few writers today have created more stir than Daphne Merkin--admired as much for her personal daring on the page as for the wit and power of her prose. Whether writing about the sexual pleasures of spanking (a piece that elicited a storm of response when it appeared in The New Yorker), losing her religion, her obsession with rock 'n' roll, her own failed marriage, or other vexed subjects, she is always tough-minded, compulsively readable, and at times recklessly candid. From her own cosmetic surgery "fix" to her flirtation with the idea of lesbianism, from the subversive thrill of shoplifting to the hidden madness of family life--she takes on the taboos and sacred cows we're fascinated by but seldom talk about. The bold and startling title essay, in which she confronts the demons of the Holocaust, is an example of this gifted writer at her most affecting: intensely self-probing but profoundly engaged with the world at large.Customer Reviews:

Part of the issue revolves around the fact that she openly discusses fetishes and sexual identity issues that the PC feminists wish didn't exist. In their vain attempts to crush her into shame and silence, they reveal themselves to be no better than their twisted twins on the right.
As for Ms. Merkin: You go girl!
