After I read Falling from fire, I'm very interested in this novel. It not only a goog book but also gives us a lot of knowledge. At first I feel this book is very boring, but the more I read, the more interest I feel. The important person in this book who name's Teri. Fourteen-year-old Teresa Dinsmore lives in a small town with her much-divorced mother, Jeanette, her Rowdy pot-smoking sister, Samantha, and her younger half-brother, Andrew. When Teri's birthday came. They celebrated for her, but the fire caught with their house... At the end of the story, there have a sentence that I liked it: "And for the first time it occurred to me that no one had come to rescue us from the fire. We had come to rescued ourselves." It tells us a important things: when we are in problem (no matter how bigger the problem is), we can not only wait someone to save or help us, we also should rescue by ourselves. It's really a good book that we read, I got a lot of knowledge from this book, even from the fire. It will follow me all my life, Thank you!

Falling from fire is about a girl named Teresa. In the story something happens on her birthday. (It has to with fire) when the fire happens,Teresa wonders if this would change her life forever. When she goes back to school everyone likes her that didn't like her before the fire. Teresa also goes through trouble with her family.
I would recomand this book to others. I think it's more of a girl book, but boys could read it too. I think it's a good book for teens. It also tells you that sometimes there people who matter a lot more to you then others and you have to make sure u no which ones.

The great classic of macroscopic thermodynamics.......1998-07-23

Seeing this book still in print makes me think that not all is lost. For decades everyone looked for Planck's treatise in order to give unity to his or her collection of facts concerning heat, as well as depth to the whole thing. The careful and elegant exposition still satisfies these needs, though the main trends have changed. The purity of the macroscopic approach championed by Planck (in fact a competition against Boltzmann) may seem now an exageration. You will not find interpretations in terms of molecules, for instance. On the other hand, the charm of the purely macroscopic approach is undeniable. After the introductory chapters the reader will notice an emphasis towards chemical equilibrium. This is, in fact, common to almost all thermodynamics texts of that time (Sommerfeld's , for instance) and is due to the fact that one of the main scientific efforts of that time was to try to synthesize ammonia, badly needed for agriculture and explosives (wars were much mo! re frequent then). The problem was eventually solved, for gaseous reagents, by Planck's students Guldberg and Waage and, especially, by Nernst, with the discovery of the third law of thermodynamics. This, by the way, receives a very detailed and interesting treatment in the last chapter, named The Absolute Value of Entropy. This alone would be worth the reading.

Interesting but limited.......2000-04-14

This is a refreshing book filled with the sorts of comments a good lecturer might provide during his lectures. It is probably not that good as a text itself, but might make an interesting optional readings book for a graduate class for this reason (and it is relatively inexpensive for books in this limited market). He is much more forthright about the classical/quantum measurement uncertainty issue than are most textbook treatments, and makes a lot of interesting points (such as that thermodynamics as taught usually really involves stationary distributions only). A nice interesting coverage of the basic issues, with much thought in evidence, and many loose threads to many issues in non-linear dynamics, insights into what is acutally going on, limitations of standard treatments, etc. There are also comments on the philosophical foundations of stat mech, and references to more or less recent solutions to important problems, giving a feel for work in the area. There are no exercises.

Excellent Version of a Classic.......2007-05-11

These comments refer to the Norton Critical Editions version of Hard Times edited by Monod and Kaplan. Hard Times was originally published in instalments in Dickens' periodical Household Words in 1854.

This well-known Dickens' satire criticises utilitarianism as advocated by the likes of Mills and Bentham. In part due to its publishing format, Hard Times is somewhat less verbose that other Dickens' work. I see this as a strength - opinions differ. From my perspective, what makes the Norton Critical Addition especially worthwhile is the contextual information supplied in the second part of the text regarding 19th century British political, philosophical and economic thought.

I recommend the Norton Critical Addition to anyone looking for a good version of this classic.

"'Tis a muddle".......2001-03-30

Or so says Stephen Blackpool. Like many of the Hands (factory workers), Stephen Blackpool feels stuck in a life of mediocrity. He and others like him are trampled by the Mr. Gradgrinds and Mr. Bounderbys of the world...

Hard Times is Dickens' critique of just how evil capitalism is at its heart. Before modifications of capitalism (like sexual harassment laws, child labor laws, civil rights, the 40-hour work week), commercial life, especially factory work, was dangerous to not only the body, but the mind (some would argue that this still is the case). And when someone wants out of that life, it isn't always as easy as walking away.

Dickens also criticizes the Gradgrind philosophy of Fact, Fact, Fact! There is no pleasure found in Fancy or imagination according to Mr. Gradgrind, and Gradgrind drills this into his students and children. The results of his philosophy do not surface right away. However, soon his daughter lapses into indifference, his son rebels and becomes a selfish thief, and a student of Gradgrind's (Bitzer) shows the coldness of Fact, Fact, Fact.

The symbolism is often blatant and comical (such as the name of one teacher, Mr. M'ChoakumChilde), but there is also some very disturbing criticism (reality will take a "wolfish turn, and make an end of you") that still gives me the chills.

Also, there is a mass of scholarly criticism that rivals the novel in length, a very nice addition.

This is truly one of Dickens' great works. It is just as powerful as "A Tale of Two Cities."
