Book Description
Detailed descriptions of insect orders, families, and many individual species are illustrated with 1,300 drawings and 142 superb color paintings. Illustrations - which use the unique Peterson Identification System to distinguish one insect from another - include size lines to show the actual length of each insect. A helpful glossary explains the technical terms of insect anatomy.

no phtoraphs.......2007-10-02
I was disappointed. The guide, although complete in many respects, has only black and white drawings. Also there were little in terms of interesting details about the insects, items such as folksy stories or enjoyable tidbits of knowledge. It was more of a science book for classroom.
Another Well Done Peterson Guide.......2007-09-10
This book is just another in the long line of Peterson Field Guides that provides good concise information of key characteristics to help identify the myriad of families of insects. Except for a few color plates, the majority is shown in black and white, so if you are looking for a book to identify strictly on sight, this might not be the book for you. I recommed using this book in concert with the Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of North America which lacks some of the detailed identification characteristics, but uses photographs for all of it's insects.
Very Weak on Pictures.......2007-06-18
When I purchased this book I expected a "National Audubon" type field guide with many color pictures of insects. Instead it was quit thin and only show certain insect groups in color pictures. Extremely disappointed! I guess I should have stuck with Audubon field guides but I thought Peterson guides would be even more extensive. I was wrong! I'll never doubt again.
Field guide to Insects.......2006-11-13
Some of the taxonomy is out of date, some orders and families have changed since the book was published, but its still very useful when identifying insects. There are several illustrations of many of the common species including the colored plates. I used it several times while making a collection for an entomology class and was really glad I had it.
Good.......2006-11-11
It is a pretty good field guide, and pratically more powerful than the regular textbooks for the general insect taxonomy course, although it is an old edition and some taxa have been changed a lot.

Best Insect Field Guide.......2005-05-14
I purchased 6 books about insects for my daughter's biology project (identify 23 insects to the species). This was the most helpful guide that we purchased and is highly recommended. If you plan to buy more than one, I also recommend The National Audubon Society Field Guide to Insects and Spiders and A Field Guide to Common Texas Insects.

Not for the botanically illiterate.......2002-02-02
I bought this hoping that I would be able to easily identify the native shrubs and vines on my property, but it is not very helpful. It is very difficult to use for someone not trained in botany. I should know, as my training is in aquatic biology and zoology. Even with my biology background, I have not found it very useful so the identification part of the title is very misleading. Also, there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to how the plants are categorized. I was hoping this would be more like Taylor's guides to trees, shrubs, etc. with pictures that then refer to a description, but it wasn't.
An important work, but not best for beginners........2001-07-25
I bought this book because I adore "Gardening with Native Wildflowers" by the same authors. I was a little disappointed because this one is not as reader friendly for beginners such as myself. It does fill an important niche by identifying all native shrubs and woody vines of the southeast, as the title implies, and for this I imagine it would be a must for anyone compiling a serious library and/or study on the subject of native plants. The book is chock full of color photographs, each of which is labeled by the scientific name of the plant. However, I would have liked to see the common name there also (there is a common name index). A beginner who does not need to know about or identify a wide variety of shrubs and vines might be better off starting with a general guide to natural gardening that includes a variety of plant types.

Thieves Within the Pages!.......2002-09-23
This books was in the garbage on my third day in Greece. Travel books usually protect you against unscrupulous taverns and hooligans. But this one included a Santorini locale that threw all the underhanded tricks at you: inflated prices and bait-and-switch bar tabs! This book was excellently written, but became usless when I couldn't trust its recommendations for dinner or a night out. If you have it, double-check its recommendations with another travel book. If the other travel book doesn't include the establishment don't go!
the real thing.......2000-03-08
I thought Dana Facaros gave just the information we needed to get the most out of our holiday, and because we did spend a couple of days in Athens before we caught the ferry we were glad to find that section there as well. What I most enjoyed were her insights...being of Greek descent myself (my grandparents came from Naxos) I often had to smile in recognition. Other English writers just don't get it guite right. I too would treat her to an ouzaki any night of the week!
She knows her stuff!.......1999-07-15
Diana has written a witty, informative and grammatically sound tome. Not too much or too little and with a great feel fo the place itself. And how could you desribe the most emphatic and vivid place on earth? The answer is to do it like Diana does: with knowledge, empathy and a deep understanding of colour, history and human nature. She is the Cyclades to me, and one day l will buy her a drink at a taverna while the sun is setting, and we will discuss our numerous anecdotes that we will share - joyfully, warmly and with great heart!
Title deceiving.......1999-07-10
This book is not a detailed guide to the Cyclades islands as one might expect. I bought this book thinking it would have loads of information on the island of Santorini but was very disappointed to find only 10 pages or so devoted to the island.
In fact the book's title is totally in appropriate. Half the book is devoted to Athens (what's that got to do with Cyclades!) and a quarter to General Info on Greece (History, language etc.) leaving only a quarter to islands coverage (hence the brief descriptions).
A waste of money!

war with the mutant spider ants.......2000-11-13
I liked this book because it had a lot of action and the endings in it were far out! I think this author did a great job on the book. The only thing that I didn't like is that it never told how the mutant ants got to Florida but besides that, it was pretty good. My favorite part was the first time you see a spider ant. In the book I flipped the page and I watched it for a little while and all it did was eat grubs, and I thought it was going to attack me! I would recommend this book to anybody who likes action and a lot of people getting eaten. That's my review for this book.

Story-Good, Pictures-Bad & Ugly.......1999-11-14
The story line for the different adventure were all right, ifyou don't mind getting hurt by one of them, but most of the picturesin there were gross! Like a bunch of whose spider-ants with covering you & a bunch of you team to get the queen. And other about seeing a rabbit get caught in the wed of it & watching it being eaten alive! I think you should find another book, unless you like things being eaten alive!

Book Description
Starch, in its many forms, provides an essential food energy source for the world's human population. It is therefore vital for manufacturers (and ultimately consumers) to have increased understanding of the granule synthesis and its behavior in modern food processing. "Starch: Advances in Structure and Function" documents the latest research and opinion on starch structure and its function as a food material, including structure characterization, processing and ingredient functionality, and control of starch biosynthesis. The multidisciplinary nature of the contents will provide a valuable reference for biologists, chemists, food technologists, geneticists, nutritionists and physicists.

Physics done well.......2007-07-02
Does a good job showing you how to visualize the concepts and then how to apply the science behind it.
Book Description
This volume collects a wide variety of works from a uniquely American literary tradition, the captivity narrative. Beginning with an excerpt from Hans Staden's The True History of His Captivity, which influenced the American captivity narrative, this volume presents accounts by early settlers held captive by Native Americans (Mary Rowlandson, John Smith), narratives by African American slaves (Olaudah Equiano, John Marrant), and others. Collected with the real-life accounts are two captivity poems by Lucy Terry and John Rolling Ridge, and several popular tales and legends on the subject.
Customer Reviews:
Subjective stories of "Captivity" in American Life.......2006-01-08
I read this book as part of a English course at UC Berkeley. The two stories that we were 'assigned' were the Rowlandson & Equiano stories. Mary Rowlandson's tale of being the penultimate Puritan Christian who was taken by "savage Indians" is about as far from objectivity as any memoir from George W Bush. Over and over again, she reminds the reader how horrible it was for her to be kidnapped and put to work among the Indians and how great God was to put her in such a challenge. If you are not a hard-lined Christian, you will be hard-pressed to like her narrative as it is far from truth-ful and only expunges stereotypes. The other main story is by Equiano and it is a much better "read" than Rowlandson's tale. However, when one reads Equiano, they get a sense of the veracity of the situation. But most of what Equiano wrote was not truthful at all. But he, as an African-American former slave, is trying to appeal to the slave-holding audience of white America. Either way, this book is so-so. I would never consider it a work of great literary value.
