Book Description
Beginning with Darwin's work in the 1870s, Foundations of Animal Behavior selects the most important works from the discipline's first hundred years—forty-four classic papers—and presents them in facsimile, tracing the development of the field. These papers are classics because they either founded a line of investigation, established a basic method, or provided a new approach to an important research question.
The papers are divided into six sections, each introduced by prominent researchers. Sections one and two cover the origins and history of the field and the emergence of basic methods and approaches. They provide a background for sections three through six, which focus on development and learning; neural and hormonal mechanisms of behavior; sensory processes, orientation, and communication; and the evolution of behavior.
This outstanding collection will serve as the basis for undergraduate and graduate seminars and as a reference for researchers in animal behavior, whether they focus on ethology, behavioral ecology, comparative psychology, or anthropology.

A Book Only an Ethologist Could Love.......2003-03-12
The subtitle for this mess should read "a collection of old, dry, and often inaccurate papers that only an ethologist could love." Seriously, though, this was a waste of paper and ink.
At best an uneven foundation.......2002-02-06
After the publisher's excellent FOUNDATIONS OF ECOLOGY I was all set for an equally good set of papers and commentaries on Behaviour. Alas 'tis not yet to be! While this collection has some useful stuff it is by no means as far reaching or as selective as the ECOLOGY volume. Although the editors have picked out some key pieces, many of the papers reprinted here have vanished into deserved obscurity, and one emerges at the end with as long a list of "should have been includeds" as one went in with. Animal Behaviour was (and is) far more dynamic and exciting than this Foundation would have us think & I find that this volume stays in a remarkably pristine condition on my shelf rather than in the proper place for a good book -much marked up & in the eager hands of an enthusiastic student!

Book Description
Principal Giraldi has given Pip an ultimatum: Either he stops skipping classes and begins seeing a counselor after school, or he's expelled. But what really scares Pip is the thought that Giraldi might call his father. His father is what really scares Pip.
From an outstanding new author comes this heartrending story of a sixteen-year-old boy on the edge. Pip has been killing his time by getting high-trying to avoid thinking about his family life, trying not to notice that his younger brother isn't the same sweet, happy kid he used to be. Now Pip's being forced to think. Will he follow his father's destructive path, or will he invent his own future, one that might not include addiction and cruelty?

Bottled Up.......2007-03-03
Pip is desperate to leave behind his life, and all of his problems. He does this by getting high, drinking and cutting classes. He feels his family, including an alcoholic dad, a doormat mom, and a needy little brother, dont understand. Hes busted by his principal and is given the choice to either take counciling, or be expelled. Pip must turn his life around for the sake of himself, and his brother.
bottled up........2006-05-15
Bottled Up is a great, relatable book for any average teenager. Pip struggles with his alcoholic father at home and overbearing teachers at school. He is responsible for his little brother as well as keeping his grades up and making sure his drugs and alcohol use under the radar.
It's a good read.
Powerful, realistic book about the pressures teenagers keep bottled up inside.......2005-12-26
Pip is bottled up. He has an alcoholic father prone to violent rages, a zonked-out pill-popping mother, and a little brother who looks up to him as the biggest hero in the world. To escape from the pressure of protecting his brother from his father, Pip escapes in drugs and alcohol. The narrative is told from Pip's flippant, jaded point of view , mocking authority figures and just trying to ease the pain of everyday life.
A concerned principal steps in to urge Pip to turn his life around. Is Pip ready to accept personal responsibility and deal with his family issues? Does he have the strength to avoid repeating this father's mistakes and treating his own brother like Pip himself was treated? The book doesn't deliver any magic solution wrapped up in a nice little bow. This is a powerful and realistic book about the pressures that teenagers keep bottled up inside.
Bottled Up.......2005-10-21
This book is a good for any teenager or adult that might be interested in reading a good story that in fun and interesting. The book is about a boy named Pip who is into drugs, drinking, and ditching school. Because his father is a very abusive man to both him and his brother, he drinks all the time before and after school and he is always high when he does drink. Pip tries to protect his little brother even though he bugs him profusely. A dilemma that Pip encounters is with his principal, he says that either he goes to counseling or he will be expelled. His decision is to go to counseling for both the alcohol and the drugs. In the end he ends up clean and back on the right track in his life. The one thing I didn't like is the story left you wondering weather or not the dad also got help, it leaves you wondering what happened to him. My favorite part of the book is when he realizes the most important thing, which is that he needed to help his brother if he didn't want to do if for himself he needed to do it for him, his only little brother.
Bottled Up.......2005-10-18
I really only picked this book up because I liked the spine.. little did I know it was soon to be my favorite book to date. In the story, Pip struggles with drug addictions and cravings as well as problems at home including taking care of his little brother and dealing with his alcoholic father. Most teenagers could probably relate to at least one aspect of the book.
sldkjasldjasldja... it's just such a great book; WITHOUT A DOUBT recommended to any teenager.

Book Description
The principal focus of
Mechanisms and Consequences of Proton Transport is on the gastric parietal cell and the acid secretory apparatus: how it operates and the consequences of malfunction.
Key topics include:
- the fundamental structure and molecular operation of the gastric H
+/K
+ exchange pump;
- gene targeting studies directed at functional changes in the gastric epithelium and its ability to deal with the pathological consequences of acid and
Helicobacter pylori infection; and
- regulation of parietal cell activation by protein kinases and ion transport pathways; the parietal cell as a model to study mechanisms for the translocation, docking, and fusion of membranes associated with regulated recruitment and recycling of transport proteins.
This book provides cutting edge research for physiologists, cell biologists, and gastroenterologists who wish to understand the mechanisms of the gastric proton pump and the consequences of malfunction and pathology.
Book Description
This book provides an accessible introduction to astronomy and general relativity, aiming to explain the Universe, not just to describe it. Written by an expert in relativity who is known for his clearly-written advanced textbooks, the treatment uses only high-school level mathematics, supplemented by optional computer programs, to explain the laws of physics governing gravity from Galileo and Newton to Einstein.
Customer Reviews:
A real treasure.......2006-08-03
How many authors of popular science books begin their books by boasting that they can teach real science to readers who have no math--or no math beyond basic algebra? And then what do you get? Either a tub full of metaphors sloshing about promiscuously or else a math course so compressed it would leave Newton saying, "Duh?" But not in this book. Bernard Schutz takes the reader by the hand and leads him gently on. There is scarcely a bump in the road; yet, by the end of the book, you've not only learned a good deal of physics, astrophysics and cosmology, you've also gotten an inkling of how a physicist thinks. How does Schutz manage to succeed where failure is the rule? Well, partly by magic, I think. But partly by the clever use of simple computer simulations (downloadable for free) and partly by means of a very carefully thought out pedagogical strategy. This gentleman is a teacher par excellence. If you're only going to read one science book in your life, read this one. Just be prepared to spend some time with it.
This book makes me happy.......2005-05-07
I wanted to understand relativity, and tried many books. Up to know i met two kinds of books, the ones which i could not understand because they are to difficult, and the ones with a minimum of math, which are incomplete and oversimplified. I did not understand everything (e,g the Einstein equation and tensors) but most of this book gives me a deep insight in the beauty of relativity, cosmology and astronomy in a way no other book has done.
Nearly perfect.......2004-11-01
This is possibly the best book i own. The book basically covers "all" the important topics in gravity, cosmology and astrophysics. For example equivalence principle, general relativity, gravitational waves, neutron stars, black holes, even a bit of quantum gravity (especially in last chapter) etc etc.
Though i must warn that anyone who reads this book might accidentally turn into a theoretical physicist. Its that fascinating/exciting really and it really makes one feel that this is a special time in theoretical physics (waiting for quantum gravity and new astronomical observations and theories). In this respect it is somewhat similar to popular books.
But i wouldnt call this a popular science book, since it goes deeper into things. For example i have Schutz's "First course in general relativity" and i think that up to the chapter on Einstein's equation it is easier than this. The reason is probably that this book doesnt use explicit calculus (well in a way it does with finite differences) or tensors; for example the chapter dealing with differential geometry and general relativity was pretty difficult to understand without tensors, but it gives very nice intuitive understanding for differential geometry/general relativity. There were other places were i understood something i havent really ever understood but was well explained here. All in all, this is an excellent book on gravity and cosmology and i recommend it to anyone.

Customer Reviews:
O'Neill's earliest plays (1913-1915).......2004-09-05
This inexpensive paperback reprints nine one-act plays and one full-length play, combining material that had appeared previously in two volumes:
1) "Thirst and Other One-Act Plays" (1914), containing "The Web," "Thirst," "Recklessness," "Warnings," and "Fog"--none of which were ever truly "lost."
2) "Lost Plays of Eugene O'Neill" (1950), including "A Wife for a Life," "The Movie Man," "Abortion," "The Sniper," and "Servitude"--all of which O'Neill thought had been destroyed but which were subsequently found in the Library of Congress's Copyright Office and edited by Lawrence Gellert, whose introduction is also included in this paperback.
As dramatic pieces, these plays (written between 1913 and 1915) range in quality, from daring to interesting to downright embarrassing; only "Thirst", "Fog," and "The Sniper" were performed during O'Neill's lifetime and none are likely to grace a stage today. Nevertheless, they are fascinating for scholars and writers who might be interested in watching a young, hesitant ingenue transform into an experienced, bold playwright.
A few of the plays stand out. "Warnings" examines the events that lead to a shipwreck, while "Thirst" and "Fog" both depict shipwreck survivors struggling to stay alive in the sea; all three prefigure O'Neill's later series of plays featuring sailors. Although unbearably melodramatic, "The Web" shows O"Neill attempting to write in street dialect for the first time. "Abortion" is a rather scandalous (for its time) and unexpectedly moving depiction of the aftermath of an unwanted pregnancy.
In the volume's one full-length play, "Servitude," O'Neill experiments with dramatic structure, opening with a climactic and shocking scene--what proves to be a preview of the finale. While deeply flawed, the play turns out to be a comedy at heart, exhibiting the satirical dialogue and mature witticisms that were to make him the only American dramatist to win a Nobel Prize.
Ten strong though little-known short plays.......2000-09-26
The ten plays in this collection (A Wife for a Life, Thirst, The Web, Warnings, Fog, Recklessness, Abortion, The Movie Man, Servitude, and The Sniper) were all written in the very earliest part of O'Neill's career, from 1913 to 1915, and were (and still are) all overshadowed by the numerous masterpieces O'Neill wrote beginning in 1920 with Beyond the Horizon. In the years before he began writing, O'Neill spent a great deal of time at sea, attempted suicide, and then came down with tuberculosis and spent six months at a sanatarium, where he discovered the works of Strindberg and others and decided to become a playwright. This is all reflected heavily in these plays: one of them deals with a consumptive character, three are set at sea, and a number of them end in suicides. Also, two of them deal with marital infidelity among the wealthy, a topic that I don't think O'Neill ever returns to in his later works but which was a favorite subject of O'Neill's idol Strindberg (in particular, Recklessness relates the affair between a married woman and her servant, which should sound familiar to readers of "Miss Julie.").
All of the plays except the three-act work Servitude are only one act and under thirty pages long. Presumably, O'Neill felt a lot more comfortable at this point in his career sticking to short treatments of matters that were close to him, and this appears to have been a good idea. Pretty much all of the plays in this collection show definite signs of the powerful tragedy for which O'Neill is known, and, considering how short they are, many of them are quite moving and haunting. While O'Neill had not yet reached his full maturity at this stage, he definitely was well-enough prepared to write very good one-act plays. His later, longer and more demanding works are very justifiably more famous than these ones, but if you enjoy O'Neill's better-known plays, his earliest works provide a very good view of the development of his style and talents, and you will probably enjoy them as well.
