    Book Description

Gardens of the Gods reveals the symbolic language of garden design, exploring the gardens of China with their moon gates and im-mortal rocks, the Zen gardens of Japan, and the paradise gardens of Islam. It even looks at Renaissance Italy with their richly mythological imagery, the landscaped parks of England, the gardens of New Harmony in the United States and some striking modern examples of symbolic gardens, including the Tarot Garden of the sculptress Niki de Saint Phalle in Italy. This beautifully illustrated book also includes a chapter with suggestions for creating a 'garden of meaning' and a selected catalog of plants with sym-bolic or mythological associations.

In my opinion this book would be recommended to young adults age 10-15 because is a story where all high school kids face and can relate to maybe having experienced moving to a new school and having to meet new friends and readjust socially. Also teens can relate to this character because maybe of her struggles in the family and adjusting to a new school.

                            Book Description

Inflationary cosmology has been developed over the last twenty years to remedy serious shortcomings in the standard hot big bang model of the universe. Taking an original approach, this textbook explains the basis of modern cosmology and shows where the theoretical results come from. The book is divided into two parts; the first deals with the homogeneous and isotropic model of the Universe, the second part discusses how inhomogeneities can explain its structure. Established material such as the inflation and quantum cosmological perturbation are presented in great detail.

Established material such as the inflation and quantum cosmological perturbation are presented in great detail, however the reader is brought to the frontiers of current cosmological research by the discussion of more speculative ideas. An ideal textbook for both advanced students of physics and astrophysics, all of the necessary background material is included in every chapter and no prior knowledge of general relativity and quantum field theory is assumed.

5 out of 5 stars the best textbook on modern cosmology.......2006-08-21

With the rising importance of cosmology has come an increasing flood of textbooks on modern cosmology. While I have not surveyed all the textbooks out there, many of those I have looked at suffered from serious problems. Recently, I had the opportunity of looking at Slava Mukhanov's new book on cosmology and I was so struck by its excellence that I am moved to post a review on Amazon, something I am not in the habit of doing. The bottom line is that I heartily recommend to any student or physicist serious about mastering modern cosmology. Mukhanov is one of the earliest pioneers in inflationary cosmology and a towering figure over the whole field, particularly when it comes to actual calculation, as compared to mere talk, of the density fluctuation spectrum.

Different people have different criteria for an outstanding textbook. I like a textbook to slice away all the obscure and unnecessary formalism shrouding the subject and to get through to the underlying concepts and the important physical ideas. So, dear reader, if you love heavy dry formalism that does not help you understand physics, then this book is not for you. (An aside: from a cursory glance at some of the reviews of physics books posted on Amazon I was amazed by the number of readers, apparently misinformed and misguided, more interested in mathematics and formalism than in understanding physics.)

There is a whole spectrum of books on cosmology. There are the giant compendia of every imaginable topic, but with almost nothing really derived, such as the book by Peacock. Then there are those books notorious for the amount of hype and hot air they blow. Such books apparently really appeal to people who want to "grasp" cosmology without doing any work; they could just read the hype and "be happy." On the opposite end of the spectrum is the book by Scott Dodelson, which is full of nitty gritty, the real stuff that you need to do detailed cosmic microwave background calculations, and which for that reason I highly recommend to students wanting to become professional cosmologists.

I have not read Mukhanov's book in its entirety. I read the parts on inflation and looked at his treatment of density perturbations. I really like his discussion of inflation, which carries the stamp of authority and deep understanding associated with a master who invented the subject. He cuts to the essential physics of the different approaches and wisely refrains from presenting the one thousand and one inflationary scenarios that have flooded (some would say, polluted) the literature. When he comes to density perturbations, he does it as simply as possible, and most importantly, correctly. Students should be aware of the fact that many of the well-known papers on the subject contain errors, as Mukhanov points out in a very helpful and biting footnote.

I recommend this book enthusiastically to all those serious about modern cosmology.

                            5 out of 5 stars Congratulations!.......2006-07-27

I think this is the best conceptual book in cosmology,
                            I truly enjoy reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the new theories of inflationary cosmology.......2006-03-21

Theories are written to explain observed phenomenon. They are then used to predict future discoveries. So long as the theory continues to work, it is accepted by the scientific community at large. Up until thirty or so years ago the model of the Cosmos was a fairly well agreed upon theory. Then slight problems began to appear, until in 1980-81 the author of this book conducted some experiments and developed theories that applied quantum fluctuations to the large scale structure of the universe.

This began the theory of inflationary cosmology that remedied several annoying little problems in the standard big bang model of the universe.

This is a textbook suitable for students in theoretical cosmology, physics, and astrophysics. It might be suitable for advanced undergraduates, but is more likely to be used in graduate level study. Some knowledge of general relativity and particle physics (and quantum field theory) is said by the author to be helpful but not necessary. I suppose that that's true, but by the end of the book you will certainly have some knowledge in this area. I'd recommend a bit of study in other books before tackling this one.

This book is a good single volume work on the modern view of cosmology. It can be used as a text on the subject. Further it contains a lot of information that will be very useful for even the best experts in the field.

Long-waited excellent textbook on phyical cosmology.
Contrary to many other texts on cosmology, which report
numerous facts, this one is self-consistent and derives
results from the first principles, economically
and often neatly. It covers main topics where
                            theoretical physics operates in cosmology.

                              Book Description

The first volume of Cosmos, his five-volume survey of the universe, appeared in 1845, though Humboldt had labored on the entire work for nearly half a century. He scrupulously sent sections of the work to other experts for suggestions and corrections. The last volume, put together from his notes after his death, appeared in 1861. The volumes were translated almost as rapidly as they appeared. This paperback edition reprints the Harper & Brothers edition, published in New York in 1858-59.

In The Devil's Larder, Jim Crace has put together an odd and artful little volume that encompasses more of the human experience than it really ought to, given its size and scope. Crace presents us with 64 short fictions about food, which add up to a picture of life that is at once diabolical and innocent, creepily sexualized and free of judgment. In one fable, a mother and her small daughter twist their tongues together, ferreting out the food in each other's mouths: they want to know if food tastes the same from another person's tongue. A game of strip fondue ends with guests covered in burns where the molten cheese has fallen onto their naked flesh. "A gasp of pain. The whiff of sizzling flesh and hair and cheese." Flesh and cheese, that's the stuff. Crace shows us the odd outer limits of desire, and revels in the sheer weirdness of the daily act of eating. --Claire Dederer

                                        Book Description

A sumptuous, scintillating stew of sixty four short fictions about appetite, food, and the objects of our desire

All great meals, it has been said, lead to discussions of either sex or death, and The Devil's Larder, in typical Cracean fashion, leads to both. Here are sixty four short fictions of at times Joycean beauty--about schoolgirls hunting for razor clams in the strand; or searching for soup-stones to take out the fishiness of fish but to preserve the flavor of the sea; or about a mother and daughter tasting food in one another's mouth to see if people really do taste things differently--and at other times, of Mephistophelean mischief: about the woman who seasoned her food with the remains of her cremated cat, and later, her husband, only to hear a voice singing from her stomach (you can't swallow grief, she was advised); or the restaurant known as "The Air & Light," the place to be in this small coastal town that serves as the backdrop for Crace's gastronomic flights of fancy, but where no food or beverage is actually served, though a 12 percent surcharge is imposed just for just sitting there and being seen.

Food for thought in the best sense of the term, The Devil's Larder is another delectable work of fiction by a 2001 winner of The National Book Critics Circle Award.

I have a habit of wandering through the library and picking a random fiction to peruse. Mostly, I find works I feel lucky I chose. This book was an exception to that normal trend. If you enjoy little ramblings on nothing at all, centered around food and strange food concepts with the underlying message that we're all crazed when it comes to food, you'll love this work. If, however, you're not inclined toward reading for meaning or are looking for some deeper meaning, skip this work.

This collection of short tales built on the theme of food is well-written, inventive ... but an hour after reading is it easily erased from memory. In short, great reading when you're constantly being interrupted. The "great" themes: how to time a soft-boiled egg by a hymn; death by botulism; fondue cheese fight ... Although I'm fond of Crace and these stories are enjoyable, there is far too much better literature for me to recoment you spend your time on these.

                                        4 out of 5 stars A Readable Feast.......2003-04-28

Go ahead--take a bite. If you believe your tastes are too pedestrian for the gourmet literary feast served up by Jim Crace in "The Devil's Larder", think again. These tiny tales of human beings and their gustatory obsessions contain the full spectrum of flavors for gourmand and epicure alike.

It's this accessibility that makes Crace one of the most evocative writers of short fiction working today. While it may seem a highbrow undertaking to prepare sixty four miniature stories about food and serve them as a meal, the book never exudes an air of snobbery or literary exclusiveness. Food, in Crace's rendering, is the most democratizing element in the world, through which people and their secrets can be rolled back like a slowly opening can of sardines.

The stories' brevity is their most astonishing strength. With words sprinkled with loving artistry over the pages like ingredients in a souffle, each tale evokes a passion, a pain, a longing, a regret, which many novelists fail to capture in work thousands of times as long. And, while of course each story stands on its own, the thematic integrity of the work makes it feel like a complete five course feast, disguised as a banquet of delectable one-bite hors-d'oeuvres.

What is an aubergine? A rose hip? A cheroot? The author might not expect his readers to know, but to imagine. And it's in daring us to imagine that Crace, a master-chef of the English language, leaves us with a greater sense of who we are and what we might become.

                                        5 out of 5 stars I loved this book.......2003-01-27

For no other reason than the stories captivated me. Each one so full of imagery. I just liked it; sometimes it's hard to say why a book is appealing, but this one is one of my favorites. If you get a chance, read it.

3 out of 5 stars Bit off less than he can chew.......2002-02-27

A pleasant enough diversion, but hardly the illuminating triumph that Crace seems to have intended. Crace is a master of entwining the intimate and the expansive, but he seems to have gotten the proportions wrong here and the book ends up feeling cramped, labored, and unworthy of the attention which generated it or which it has garnered. The stories themselves, while often delightful (although also sometimes dull), are on roughly the same level as good canapes at a fancy cocktail party: try one and you're in awe, four and you're half-sated, ten and you don't even notice them any more, because they've all started to taste alike. And no matter how many of them you pile on, they don't add up to a meal.
