              Book Description

In this extraordinary memoir, Nobel Prize–winning author Gunter Grass remembers his early life, from his boyhood in a cramped two-room apartment in Danzig through the late 1950s, when The Tin Drum was published.

During the Second World War, Grass volunteered for the submarine corps at the age of fifteen but was rejected; two years later, in 1944, he was instead drafted into the Waffen-SS. Taken prisoner by American forces as he was recovering from shrapnel wounds, he spent the final weeks of the war in an American POW camp. After the war, Grass resolved to become an artist and moved with his first wife to Paris, where he began to write the novel that would make him famous.

Full of the bravado of youth, the rubble of postwar Germany, the thrill of wild love affairs, and the exhilaration of Paris in the early fifties, Peeling the Onion—which caused great controversy when it was published in Germany—reveals Grass at his most intimate.

3 out of 5 stars Fiction is often truer than memoir.......2007-10-11

The book was well-written, but the vagueness of what actually happened and lack of emotional depth of this memoir was disturbing. Has the author taken full responsibility for his actions? Why is this story being told only now? I get the impression that this man is a consummate narcissist. His fiction is truer than his non-fiction.

              5 out of 5 stars Ethical problems.......2007-09-07

At a play in NYC a few years ago when one character describes to another German children burned alive with napalm in the allied bombings, a playgoer behind me said, "good".

In the shop today I was restoring a Nuernberg Trial document containing a photo (among others) of a German soldier executing a terrified nine-year-old.

And here is Grass's autobiographical account of a kid in Nazi Germany and a youth in its aftermath. Everybody should read this book.

In Plato's CRITO Socrates said we are divided into two types, those who believe that it is right to return harm for harm and those who believe in doing no harm at all. These two types will always be fighting, Socrates says, because they really have nothing in common. Everybody should read that book, too.

              5 out of 5 stars German Fan.......2007-08-31

I had heard the controversy this book stirred up, and I was curious as to how much sidestepping there would be. Let me tell you, Grass is brutally honest here and he holds nothing back. Do not think for one minute that he hid anything in his life -- it's all there in his books for you to see, and he tells you point blank where to look for the clues.

A definite must read for anyone interested in Germany history.

              5 out of 5 stars Grass's Masterpiece.......2007-08-30

This beautiful, almost unbearably moving, profoundly honest, wonderfully complex and poetic work will surely come to be known not only as one of Grass' very best, but also as one of the truest books on the Hitler period. With extraordinary care, Grass, as he peels the onion, explores the nature of memory, creativity, and truth itself. His homage to his mother is one of the most beautiful ever written. This is as good as memoir gets. I highly recommend it to all serious readers, thinkers, and seekers of Truth.

3 out of 5 stars The great work is behind him.......2007-07-30

"Peeling the Onion" is not a great book, but it is not a bad one either. One wishes for a more straightforward, clear narrative, still, there are powerful and moving passages within this muddled book.
Grass joined the SS and kept it from public knowledge for decades. Now he has made it public and has apologized. His life and most of his political positions and activism since the end of World War II, have made up for his youthful membership in the SS.
The great work is behind him: "The Tin Drum," "The Flounder," "From The Diary of a Snail" and other good if lesser novels. With "The Rat" clear evidence of his literary decadence appeared, yet "The Call of the Toad" was refreshingly good.
For anyone seriously interested in post World War II literature, "Peeling the Onion" is a must, if flawed, read. Better yet,go back and read "The Tin Drum," which is undeniably a masterpiece.

3 out of 5 stars Life After Car Accident.......2007-07-03

Anna was a reasonably happy teenager. She got along well with her parents and her younger brother and sister. She had good friends, was a champion at karate and even thought Hayden, one of the guys in her karate club, might turn into her boyfriend.

She was at the top of the world that summer afternoon. She had just won a karate tournament and Hayden offered to drive her home. On that car ride, everything changed.

It isn't until much later that Anna remembers all of the accident. All that she knows is that she is in the hospital with pain everywhere. In the accident her neck was broken, her ankles both mangled, and her thumb broken in twelve places. She couldn't seem to concentrate on anything, and she lived for the pain pills she was given four times a day.

When she is finally out of the hospital, Anna struggles to redefine who she is. She had intended to become a gym teacher, to continue on and receive her black belt in karate, to take a bicycle trip across Holland. Instead, she finds she can barely move around her own house. School and friends no longer seem as important as they once did. Hayden is acting weird and guilty all of the time and Anna is thinking her life may not even be worth living.

I thought the description of Anna's physical condition was more realistic than in other books. I had never thought of what it would be like to live in constant pain, but this book did a good job of conveying that. However, it seemed that the doctors in this book were completely inept. They were insensitive when Anna was scared and embarrassed and hurting, and they made far too many mistakes.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and touching.......2006-06-25

In "Peeling the Onion", Wendy Orr explores the difficult situation of Anna who has just been in a life-altering car crash. Suddenly, everything that she has known changes in an instant making the simplest everyday tasks a challenge. Perhaps worst of all, Anna can no longer participate or compete in karate - meaning that she has no way of releasing her pent up anger and frustration. As Anna questions her life and perceptions, readers too, are forced to examine the same issues.

This is one of those books that I go back and read over and over again. The writing is stark and realistic. It is written in short little glimpses and internal commentaries all in a first-person narrative which adds to the realism. It's an incredible book and a very fast read.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of offensive language and mature subject matter.......2005-05-04

Anna, high school senior, is coming home from winning a tournament when there is a terrible accident. Anna's life is changed completely and she must work through many adjustments - physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually.
This book should be for mature readers only, not only because of the offensive language, but also because of the subject matter (Anna talks of a desire to have sex, she wonders about ending her life, her unmarried friend admits to making love, and there is a description of Anna standing naked in front of a mirror).

5 out of 5 stars Emotional Yet Fantastic Book.......2005-04-08

This book was great. It hooked me in from the first page. The things that Anna went through, she had to give up her dream of being a Phys. Ed teacher because of the accident. She had to choose between two boys that she loved. The experiences that she went through are realistic, I can relate to them. In some bits it made me cry because I really felt for her. I love this book, I would definantely recommend it.

PEELING THE ONION is a smorgasbord that offers a selection from a table laden with a great variety of verse and a taste of many experiences. Some of the experiences will be familiar, some will be entirely new.

Here is another of Ruth Gordon's anthologies in which she shows her respect for young people by selecting poems not originally written for them and poems from many different times and places. PEELING THE ONION is a celebration of the unexpected joys to be found in that most economical and precise of forms: poetry.

                                                  Book Description

For Albert Einstein, 1905 was a remarkable year. It was also a miraculous year for the history and future of science. In six short months, from March through September of that year, Einstein published five papers that would transform our understanding of nature. This unparalleled period is the subject of John Rigden's book, which deftly explains what distinguishes 1905 from all other years in the annals of science, and elevates Einstein above all other scientists of the twentieth century.

Rigden chronicles the momentous theories that Einstein put forth beginning in March 1905: his particle theory of light, rejected for decades but now a staple of physics; his overlooked dissertation on molecular dimensions; his theory of Brownian motion; his theory of special relativity; and the work in which his famous equation, E = mc 2, first appeared. Through his lucid exposition of these ideas, the context in which they were presented, and the impact they had--and still have--on society, Rigden makes the circumstances of Einstein's greatness thoroughly and captivatingly clear. To help readers understand how these ideas continued to develop, he briefly describes Einstein's post-1905 contributions, including the general theory of relativity.

One hundred years after Einstein's prodigious accomplishment, this book invites us to learn about ideas that have influenced our lives in almost inconceivable ways, and to appreciate their author's status as the standard of greatness in twentieth-century science.

This year is the hundredth anniversary of "Einstein's Miracle Year" of 1905. In 1905, Albert Einstein published five scientific papers, all of which were important and three of which are still considered groundbreaking. Many scientists would consider themselves lucky to publish five important papers in a lifetime, which is one of the many reasons why Einstein's achievement is considered such a triumph. And yet, it is rare, even among the well-educated, to find people who really know what Einstein did. Words like "relativity" and "E = mc squared" are tossed around without any real comprehension of their meaning. That is why it is good and not at all surprising to find a book like Mr. Rigden's on the shelf now.

In Einstein 1905, Mr. Rigden takes us through each of Einstein's papers of 1905--the quantum paper of March (often referred to as the "photoelectric effect" paper), the molecular dimensions paper of April, the "Brownian motion" paper of May, the relativity paper of June and the energy-mass paper (with that famous equation) in September. He does his best to explain exactly what it is that each paper said and, simultaneously, what Einstein was trying to achieve. (Not always the same thing.) He is even better at explaining the impact each paper had on the development of physics often far into the future and in ways Einstein both did and did not see. He also describes how many people still misunderstand what the impact of these papers is.

This is by no means a book for the faint of heart. Mr. Rigden throws physics terminology around a little to easily for that. However, it is also not a book that requires a serious education in math and physics. It is very readable with hardly an equation in sight. A reader with a good general education and a desire to understand the impact that Einstein had on the world will get a lot from this book because, in the final analysis, the physics is only the means to an end here.

Ultimately, Mr. Rigden is trying to get a handle on the nature of genius in his analysis of some of Einstein's greatest triumphs. Apart from Newton's flurry of brilliance in the early 1660's, there is probably not another period of time in history where so much has been achieved over such a brief period. Einstein's name has become synonymous with genius and everyone would like to know what it was that made Einstein who he was.

Still, in the end, the nature of genius remains elusive. Mr. Rigden has written a great history here but is basically remains on the surface as it must in an investigation like this. One can describe how Einstein was confidently stubborn and how he worked from contradictions to "generalize it and then be guided by its implications until a resolution was found, frequently in the form of profound new insights." True as this may be (and I found his recurring discussion of the continuity/discontinuity problem in physics to be one of the most insightful things I've read recently), this doesn't always lead to genius--as can be seen from Einstein's own later years.

The fact remains that Einstein's work was an achievement almost without equal and that Mr. Rigden has written an excellent account of it. Einstein's work should be better understood beyond being able to mouth a single equation and the term "relativity." Here, in a slim volume, we have a respect for the totality of Einstein's triumphs of 1905 and should be read by anyone who claims to be educated.

The works assembled here introduce George Eliot's incisive views on religion, art, and science, and the nature and purpose of fiction. Essays show her rejecting her earlier religious beliefs, questioning conventional ideas about female virtues and marriage, and setting out theories of idealism and realism that she developed further in her famous novels. Also included are selections from Eliot's translations of works by Strauss and Feuerbach, excerpts from her poems, and reviews of writers such as Wollstonecraft, Goethe, and Browning. Wonderfully rich in imagery and observations, these pieces reveal the intellectual development of this most rewarding of writers.

                                                      Book Description

Subjects as diverse as Ian Paisley's rhetoric and T.S. Eliot's anti-Semitism; poets including Elizabeth Bishop, John Clare, Louis MacNeice and Gerard Manley Hopkins; the art of criticism itself--all come under the eye of one of our most impassioned and exciting critics. Tom Paulin's political nous and intellectual rigour, his championing of the sort of "meltfresh, newpainted, all-in-the-moment" journalism that marked William Hazlitt as one of the greatest critics of his age, and his own exemplary subscription to this school of writing, make Writing to the Moment essential reading for all students of literature and vernacular culture.

4 out of 5 stars The best of a good critic.......2000-05-23

Tom Paulin is one of the better English-language poets working at the moment. Wow, faint praise indeed. Perhaps I should say that I'm a fan of his poetry for fairly irrational reasons; I like the snap and rustle of it, although his recent work is in a slightly more mellifluous vein than his snarling books of the mid-Eighties. He's best known in the UK as a regular panellist on a TV arts review show, when he can be relied upon to lay into anything he doesn't like in his pleasantly whiny Belfast drawl. (He recently savaged Kingsley Amis' Letters ("turgid") and described Saul Bellow as a "reactionary fool", which made me sit up and cheer.)

But he's also, as I say, a fine poet and, on paper, a brilliant, take-no-prisoners critic (as well as being a Professor of Poetry, if that means anything to you.) His essays, selected here from sixteen years' work, range from the wildly celebratory - he goes into raptures about John Clare, and into orbit about Elizabeth Bishop's selected letters - to the unanswerably damning, such as his classic exposure of Conor Cruise O'Brien as being a shifty, self-serving closet Unionist. (The fact that O'Brien much later publicly aligned himself with the Unionists only went to show how prescient Paulin can be.)

I personally think that Paulin is too much involved with a certain canon of Eng Lit. By no means the usual suspects, however, as witnessed by his championing of such relatively outre figures as Clare, the Ulster novelist George Birmingham and the English poet Peter Reading; but still, there's something sentimental about his evangelical love of anything vernacular. He certainly hasn't shouted very loud about the most remarkable efforts in vernacular writing in the last 20 years - the poetry of Tom Leonard, the fiction of James Kelman, the rise of rap, the 90s explosion of young UK and Irish dramatists. He should get out of the study a bit more. Still, he's a good man to have on your side, and he never kids himself that poetry exists in isolation from the rest of the world. That's an achievement in itself.
