Indulge your inner canyon.......2007-04-16

It's almost as if there are two Grand Canyons. There's the one on the calendars and post cards, the big view from the rim. Then there's the inner canyon, the one experienced only by river runners and hikers. And sometimes--rarely--by readers. Rarely because it's hard to do justice to the canyon. The canyon is all about Time, and it takes a lot of time to even start to get to know it well.

The University of Arizona's Desert Places series teams up leading authors and photographers to offer personal explorations of famous landscapes. Yes, in its desert climate too the inner canyon is quite different from the cool, pine forest rim. The team for the Grand Canyon is Ann Zwinger and Michael Collier, both of whom have spent a great deal of time getting to know the canyon. And it shows.

In the course of the river trip in this narrative, Ann Zwinger offers us her usual graceful exploration of wonders large and small. She is a careful naturalist who notices the smallest patterns, yet she is also ready to find the largest poetry: "I work my fingers into the interstices of this cool rough rock that contains all earth's hopes and dreams. I think that if there is any place I can ever come close to glimpsing the age of this earth, the forces that formed it, the heat that melded it, the seas that overlay it, the time out of mind of sand grains formed, raindrops fallen, breezes wafted, sunshine shafting, all that went on and on in dogged perseverence, millennium after millennium--it is right here, right now."

Grand Canyon photographers seem prone to the same syndrone as canyon painters. You can usually tell which ones have spent too little time here: they've learned the rules of landscape painting in art school, and now they try to force those rules onto the canyon. But the canyon has its own unique rules, rules made of light and shadow and subtlty. Most artists and photographers aim for grandeur, not even grasping the concept that the inner canyon is an intensely intimate place. Fortunately Zwinger's intimate prose is matched by Collier's intimate photos. A rim tourist wouldn't even recognize many of them as being the Grand Canyon: there are slot canyons, flowers, rock formations. But best of all, half of the photos feature people, usually small figures against a sinuous landscape, often only shadows, shadows pondering, shadows that are not anyone in particular but universal human shapes. Shadows that evoke some of the mystery of canyon and time, life and earth.

Shayla Fox's life seems to take turn after turn for the worse. First, her estranged father left her mother for good. Then he remarried a woman Shayla does not like in the least. But worst of all, he has a new daughter named Gift --- a daughter born on Shayla's birthday! Shayla feels as if she has nothing of her own any more, not even a special day. Her grandmother, her sister, and her mother all try to help Shayla. Grandma Augustine is a wisecracking wise woman. Although Shayla feels like her drama is unbearable, Grandma Augustine constantly reminds her to be thankful that she is alive and whole and smart. Grandma Augustine knows that Shayla can be melodramatic and so she gently tells her grandchild that her life, like most people's, will be filled with a little rain, but it's up to Shayla to make sure her sorrows don't turn into a big, overwhelming storm.

A girl who does have a stormy life is Shayla's best friend Kambia. (Their friendship was detailed in author Williams's first book, WHEN KAMBIA ELAINE FLEW IN FROM NEPTUNE by Lori Williams.) As this second novel opens, Kambia's life has only gotten more complicated. A year prior, Kambia was found wandering, alone and amnesiac. Adopted by the Dreyfuses, Kambia is caught in a search for her identity as well as having to find a place for herself in the world. Shayla must help Kambia heal, even as anonymous notes and packages start to plague her friend and bring her to the edge of sanity.

Most of the time Shayla feels as if she's caught up in a world full of problems whirling about her, just waiting to reach out and snatch her.

SHAYLA'S DOUBLE BROWN BABY BLUES presents a harsh picture of contemporary life in the African American community. The families are strained nearly to the breaking point but held together by a web of women. These woman show their strengths and vulnerabilities while keeping life going, despite upheavals, dangerous events, and secrets from the past. Women like Grandma Augustine carry with them the promise of a brighter future, even when that promise seems to be withheld by violence and uncertainty; they never allow hope to become totally eaten away. By sharing her enduring strength with her granddaughter, Augustine demonstrates that it is possible to bear the shocks of life and, in time, overcome them.

This isn't the kind of book you can say you enjoyed; "enjoy" simply isn't the right word. But it does tell a powerful story in tight well-crafted prose that lingers in the mind and in the soul long after the story has ended. Lori Aurelia Williams's characters are so solid, they seem as if they've been hewn out of rock instead of the airy stuff of imagination. It's the kind of book that makes you want to hold your own family just a little nearer, just a little dearer. See for yourself.

Many young adult books cannot be compared to the technique and writing style of Lori Aurelia Williams. In her sequel, Shayla's Double Brown Baby Blues, Williams gives her characters conflicts in which many readers are able to relate to, or can understand based on human emotions. Williams heroine, Shayla, is a bright beautiful young lady who has a strong sense of self and faces many problems to determine her self worth. I would recommend this book to any and everyone, espcially young adults, because its a comming of age book and many young people can relate to Shayla's problems.

Great sequel to When Kambia Elaine Flew in from Neptune.......2002-11-17

In this sequel to When Kambia Elaine Flew in from Neptune, Shayla's father has a baby daughter with his new wife. The baby is born on Shayla's birthday and has Shayla's eyes. As Shayla is learning to accept the new baby, Gift, she is also dealing with Kambia, who is getting threatening messages from someone while she is trying to recover from what happened before. Also in the midst of everything, Shayla meets a boy named Lemm. Lemm is a gentlemen who does a lot of sweet talking, and really likes Shayla, but he has real problems too. This is a great book, and anyone who liked the first book will really like this one too.

Flawlessly produced and aptly narrated.......2001-11-07

Shayla is young, black, and feels that now that her father's new wife has given birth to a baby (born on Shayla's own birthday!) that she has been replaced in her father's affections. Shayla can't even confide in her best friend, Kambia Elaine, because of not wanting to diminish Kambia's own happiness at finally being part of a loving family in her own right. Nor can Shayla confide in a new friend, Lemm, when she discovers that he has his own troubles and tragedies that he is trying to keep secret. Lori Williams' Shayla's Double is a superbly written, emotionally articulate novel of unconditional love, human heartbreak, and family relationships. Highly recommended for young listeners 10 through 18, this 10 hour, 30 minute Listening Library unabridged production is flawlessly produced and aptly narrated by heather Alicia Simms.

this was a great book, just as good as Lori Aurelia Williams's first book. it focuses on friendship and growing up. shayla must deal with some really difficult issues. her father has a new baby that she fears will take her place and someone begins sending Kambia packages that remind her of her childhood, sending her into her own little world for hours at a time. i can't wait to see what else williams writes.

An Absolute Gem.......2007-06-30

Understanding Einstein almost sounds like an oxymoron. Is it really possible to understand one of the most brilliant people of the 20th century? Well, this book goes a long way in trying to provide the reader with an understanding of Einstein and his contributions to science and other areas of human endeavor. The author places Einstein in the context of our unfolding history of ideas as seen from the perspectives of science, psychology and philosophy, just to name a few. Since the "Idiot Guide" series are meant to be introductions to topics and not graduate level thesis', I was amazed at how much material was actually covered in a book of this kind. Being a big fan of Einstein's and having read most books out there about him, this book goes a long way in bringing together a wide diversity of material available on his theories and life. His most important discoveries ae cleary explained and even his shortcomings are touched upon. Like the author's other book on the "Theories of the Universe", he brings an interdisciplinary approach to the material, that always gives you more than just either his theories or biographical material. You will definitely be much closer to "understanding" Einstein after you read this book.

Worthless!.......2007-05-02

"Understanding Einstein" attempts to cover major scientific developments from Aristotle to post-Einstein, as well as details of Einstein's life - all in 432 pages! Clearly anyone but a COMPLETE IDIOT would know this is not possible in any meaningful way - especially one attempting to understand relativity.

Material is mostly presented as givens, with little/no insight as to the "Why?" Further, even the examples used are not necessarily correct.

Example 1: Einstein's conclusion that acceleration and gravity are equivalent is first postulated, and the example utilized (a moving spaceship in which light from outside hits the spaceship's interior at a lower level - ergo it is bent by gravity - is a non sequitur because the spaceship need not be accelerating for this to occur.

Example 2: Moring mentions a glitch in Mercury's orbit that is not explained by Newtonian mechanics, but is by Einstein's gravitational mathematics. That's all - no details, no insight, no understanding, and no value.

Example 3: Moring ends up referencing post-Einstein theories that assert variations in the speed of light, contrary to Einstein. That's all we get - no explanation or resolution. Further, the book doesn't even reference recent experiments that have brought light to a complete stop, or attempt how this meshes with Einstein.

Bottom Line: Read something else if you want to understand much of anything in the physical sciences.

Very informative.......2007-01-04

I haven't finished the whole book, but it is already my favorite. It is a trip through history. The author builds science theory, and discovery through the ages, social climates, and general thinking in the given era. It's a great quick reference for scientist, and dates of discoveries. I highly recommend this book for anyone interest in digging deeper in to science. It is fascinating.

Mixed Impression.......2006-10-26

Positive: A fairly easy read, well written.
Good biographical material dealing with Einstein's work, social, and political views.
Non-mathematical accounts of general & special theory of relativity, and quantum theory.

Negative: discursive, somewhat superficial accounts of the history of physics.
The thread of the author's arguments are frequently lost through his excursions into philosophy, religion, and the psychology of the unconscious. Some of this is pretty superficial and the comnnecttions made between these fields and contemporary physics is, in my opinion, a real stretch.
The discussion of time and relativity is at times confusing because the distinction between the observer and the event is not made clear.

Very good read........2004-04-02

If you're looking for an introductory level overview of physics, from the earliest thinkers to modern theories that seem stranger than fiction, look no further. Although I read it cover to cover, I still read chapters and segments from time to time. The author writes in a manner that is easy to follow and very interesting. Highly recommended.

Don't Get It Unless You Want To Become An Idiot..........2006-12-29

What seemed like a good book in the bookstore turned out to be a disaster. I am a sophmore student in high school and I barely passed physics with a 70 last semester.
Don't get this book. It is so annoying. (Sorry to the author in case he is reading this), but this book doesn't help at all. He basically repeats the same information five different ways. All we need to do is hear it once.
I am a huge idiot's guide fan. Most idiot's guides authors have enormous passions with what they are talking about. However, Johnnie does not have a passion at all in his writing. No inspiration to the reader to want to learn the material.
Instead of just telling us the formula for universal gravitation, tell us also why we need it. Why it is important.
If you can handle the constant repition than go ahead and read it, but it will take a lot of effort to dig through it.

Facts in doubt.......2006-08-26

I just came home from a visit to my local book store, where I happened to pick up a copy of this book to browse for a bit. At one point the author tries to explain Bernoulli's law but only succeeds in demonstrating that he does not understand it himself. He tries to connect Bernoulli's law with the creation of lift on an airplane wing in a way that is demonstrably wrong (NASA has a proper description of this topic on their web site -> Amazon does not allow URLs). He argues that accelerated air will assume a lower pressure and uses the well known formula of Bernoulli to do so. This is in fact not true and can be proven with very simple class room experiments. The author needs to violate basic physical boundary conditions to make his claims come out right and does so freely. The theory he bases his explanation on is in wide spread circulation but none the less completely wrong. This shows to me that the author is simply copying from other sources, without applying any scrutiny to the facts.

How can you teach physics if you are not willing to learn it properly yourself and if you think proper fact checking is just a waste of time?

A Great Review of Highschool Physics.......2004-08-22

I have to admit to having nearly failed physics in highschool on account of breaking so much lab equipment. Mr. Dennis' book was a great review of classic physics without the hazards of flying hockey pucks off the airtable(breaking the poloroid camera) or squirting latex emulsion into the microscope(permanently jamming the focusing mechanism). I would have liked a section on some of the newer ideas such as string theory and dark matter, but the book was a thoroughly enjoyable review of the Newtonian science of movement

Horribly edited.......2004-06-16

I studies physics over 20 years ago in high school, so perhaps I'm rustier than I realized. BUT, what seemed like a helpful book was seriously marred by repeated inconsistencies between the diagrams and the description of the diagrams in the text. "km/hr" in the text are shown as "km/m" in the diagram; symbols are different; in one case, the text clearly meant to refer to "t" [the symbol for time] but the symbol was just dropped ["if it moves for hours" instead of "if it moves for t hours"]. Plus, the author does a good job of setting up the basic explanations, but when giving example problems, he relies on the diagrams to explain the solutions. Since the diagrams are often wrong or inconsistent, it left me a little muddled. I'm not sure how anyone made it through this book. Didn't they have a copy editor?

Typos and forced humor.......2004-06-13

At first blush, in the bookstore, this seemed like a great book--but the typos in chapter 2 are infuriating! For example: on page 15 of 2003 edition you travel 15 miles in 3.0 minutes and their answer is 30 miles an hour! Nooooo!!!! Please, this is supposed to help idiots--not be written and proofread by idiots... This is very sloppy publishing and it cannot be tolerated!
A few pages later, the reader is treated to a defintion of acceleration in which a crucial symbol is completely missing.
If not for the typos I would have overlooked the forced enthusiasm in the preamble to the discussion on dimensional analysis, but "All right. Hold on to your hats. Here goes!" begins to annoy one after wasting too much time finding their typos...This is my first Idiots Guide, and it will likely be my last! Shame on the Penguin Group, the parent company!

An African Fidel Castro.......2006-06-27

Sankara was a great revolutionary, not just a fighter, not just defiant, but a thinker, a man who sought to united the working masses of his country against imperialism and for progress. Reading his writings give wisdom not just to African revolutionists, but to anyone in the world who thinking about how to defend working people against the imperialist offensive, how to move his people to progress.

In this regard Sankara's writings are important because he is not a phony leftist spouting rhetoric, but a thinking leader of his people trying to educate, trying to involve and trying to give leadership to the peasants, the women, the workers, because he knew real revolutions are made not by leaders or elites, but by the masses.

In this Sankara reminds me very much of another fighting leader, a man Sankara worked with and stood shoulder to should with Fidel Castro. Imperialism and reaction may have silenced Thomas Sankara's body, but as long as these words are available, his ideas will never stop leading people in struggle in Africa and in the world. This book had a tremendous impact on my personal and political ideology. It had so much impact that I named my first child Sankara! He also emphasizes the importance of international solidarity of all oppressed people. "He who loves his own people also loves other people." Thomas Sankara is one of many heroes that suffered from imperialism's bullets. Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr. Patrice Lumumba, Augusto Sandino, Amilcar Cabral, Maurice Bishop and now Thomas Sankara speak from the grave, "Don't Shoot...You Can Not Kill Ideas!"
