Book Description
When something major occurs in your life, you are never the same again. In
Nerves Out Loud, seven women writers share pivotal moments from their teen years, concentrating on an event or series of events that changed their lives and turned them in a new direction. By telling their stories passionately and fearlessly, these authors encourage young women everywhere to grab their youth and their sense of self and hold on tight as they examine who they are.
Told in each woman's unique voice, these stories are conveyed sometimes with humor and sometimes with terror, but each with a sense of urgency and honesty.
After the Flood - Melanie Little
Melanie's youth has been spent under the enormous pressures of competitive figure skating. When stress leads her to quit, she faces disappointment from her parents, a sense of failure within herself, and the deep emptiness that comes when something that has taken up your whole life is suddenly gone.
Fourteen Turns - Carellin Brooks
In a world of adults, Carellin is faced with a trade-off between a comfortable home and a foster father who bombards her with sexual advances. She struggles to keep both her body and her sense of self safe.
Will You Kiss Me? - Marnie Woodrow
Desperate to care about girly things, Marnie believes that her urge to kiss girls is strange and unusual. When her best friend hands her a note, Marnie realizes that she isn't alone and experiences the tremendous sense of freedom that comes from understanding and accepting oneself.
Home - Madeleine Thein
Caught in a clash of cultures and family disharmony, leaving is a reality in Madeleine's home. In the middle of the night, in anger, across the seas, one family member after another disappears, yet left at the center, strong and constant, her mother remains.
Nerves Out Loud - M.K. Quednau
Within the realities of domestic violence Marion summons the courage to survive tragedy and to find her voice through writing.
The Skinny One - Karen Rivers
Filled with a power that comes from denying herself, Karen wages an incredible, angry battle within as she tries to reach elusive and unrealistic goals that she has set for herself and her body.
Going Crazy, Wanna Come? - Susan Musgrave
With her trademark humor, Susan invites readers into her wild teen years on the run -- from school, to California, from a mental hospital. With the help of other writers she realizes she isn't crazy -- she's a poet.

Definitely Recommend.......2002-02-18
Covering a variety of topics, this book has something every teen can relate to. Highlights include powerful accounts by Melanie Little, Marnie Woodrow, and Karen Rivers. The book ends on a low note with a rambling essay by Susan Musgrave but is an otherwise strong book.

Book Description
In this significant revision of his ground-breaking book, Hecht uses a compelling narrative presentation. Students will see the wonder of physics as Hecht uses real-life applications, an unparalleled art and photography program that motivates conceptual discussions, a presentation that anticipates students' questions, and an approach that emphasizes contemporary physics while interweaving historical perspectives.
Building on the numerous strengths of the First Edition, this book is now thoroughly revised throughout with approximately 800 new problems, a new five-step problem-solving framework for all examples, new sketch-art accompanying many examples, more biological applications, new do-it-yourself experiments, and so much more.
Customer Reviews:
One word to describe this book: Horrible.......2005-12-26
I'm really mad at our school for having this as our textbook.
This book talks too much about the history of physics than to focus on concepts and how to solve problems. It doesn't tell you what kind of equations you should use for what type of problems. Some answers on the back of the book are wrong.
This book is bad for both self studying and for class supplement.
This book is just not for studying physics nor for anything else. I'd say it's garbage.
urnightingale.......2004-01-17
THis is an excellent book...but you really have to be committed to learn anything (esp. Physics). You can't expect to just read through once and understand everything. This book makes the reader think deeply about physical concepts, but again, you have to be committed to grasp them throughly. It is a very interesting book. Excellent resource for to-be-researchers. In fact, it introduces the reader to very interesting facts about different researcher. I used to read it like a story book (some chapters took about a day to read) but i enjoyed it. If you want to learn physics and want to learn it with an open mind, this is the best book. I have taken an engineering physics course also and their book was very boring and confusing compared to this one. so..enjoy!
Students Beware!!!!.......2003-06-18
I bought this book for a class and was hoping it would help me through it, since my teacher was not the best. It just made it more confusing. The book is littered with information, just too much for a person taking algebra based physics. Most people taking Algebra based physics need a step-by-step approach at learning the subject matter. This book does a poor job at doing so. The concepts are not clear and concise, and fails when attempting to outline major equations. The problems in the back have answers for the odd problems, but how do we access answers to the even problems? Where's the student solution manual? It adds much difficulty to the learning process. Wouldn't recommend it.
Book Description
Three-disc CD-ROM multimedia presentation of the most important principles of the algebra- and trigonometry-based physics course. Content screens provide in-depth coverage of abstract and often difficult principles, building connections between physical concepts and mathematics. The presentation contains more than 350 movies-oboth animated and live video-including laboratory demonstrations, "real world" examples, graphic models, and step-by-step explanations of essential mathematics. An accompanying workbook contains practical physics problems directly related to the presentation, along with worked solutions. This CD can be used with any algebra/trig based introductory physics text.

Customer Reviews:
Just essential.......2002-03-04
This is probably the best reference about Heinlein's works that's ever been written. One of the best thing about it is that it's complete and very well organized, so that you can find whatever you're looking for in a few seconds, very handy.
Since I've bought it I've consulted it hundreds of times, I couldn't do without it.
Essential Must Have For Heinlein Fans.......2001-08-02
This is an absolute must have for any serious Heinlein fan. Gifford obviously put a lot of work and thought into crafting the Heinlein Opus list, which provides a complete compendium of everything Heinlein has written. There are also tidbits about Heinlein work not published as well.
Gifford's precise, clear, and unbiased commentary on nearly all of Heinlein's works is interesting and concise. It does a great service by providing a clear chronological progression of Heinlein as a writer, which gives the reader a fuller understanding of the works produced at a given time in Heinlein's career. I often felt nostalgic when going through commentary because I could remember the work and the period of my life that I read it, and the enjoyment that it brought me at the time.
This book is indeed a companion for Heinlein fans.
Needs to be more--or less........2001-07-31
I was really looking forward to getting this book, but I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed. It is obviously a labor of love, but I would recommend it only for Heinlein fans who have already read most of the Grand Master's works.
It basically consists of an alphabetical listing with comments on all of the published works of RAH and it appears to be quite comprehensive. Some of the remarks and anecdotes are very interesting, but virtually all of them assume that you are already familiar with the plot of the particular story or novel. This is why I recommend it only for die-hard fans. It is no help at all for the reader who has read only a couple of Heinlein's works. I think there should have been at least a basic plot synopsis for each item so those folks could have been pointed to Heinlein pieces that would have been new to them that they might have found interesting.
No work, not even Starship Troopers or Strangers in A Strange Land, gets more than three or four pages of comments (most are less than a page) and the book is only about 250 pages long. Rather pricey, too.
The One Essential Book about Heinlein.......2001-03-10
Many of us waited over 5 years for this book to be published. It was well worth the wait. The author is the pre-eminent Heinlein scholar in the known multiverse ; ) and the information presented is both authoritative and fascinating, without being pedantic. Anyone with more than a very casual interest in the work of Robert A. Heinlein would do well to order this book ASAP. We can only hope that we won't have to wait another 5 years for further work in this area from Mr. Gifford. Anyone seriously interested in Heinlein may also want to check out sff.net. Mr. Gifford frequents the Heinlein oriented discussions there. The book has fascinating commentary about all of the major and many of the minor works of RAH, and Mr. Gifford's included New Heinlein Opus List is the definitive list of the Grand Master's work (and is used and cited by other scholars working in the field.)

Good, but way too short.......2007-03-23
This is a much more hopeful and truthful book then the George Washington Carver book written by Gary R. Kremer. I was just starting to enjoy reading this book when all of a sudden, it ended abruptly (it's only 104 pages long). Maybe someday someone will write a lengthy and deep biography on this kind and gentle man.
A Nice Complement to a fuller biography of Carver.......2006-03-16
George Washington Carver: His Life & Faith in His Own Words is a short book of biography and quotes from this great Christian man. The book is compiled and written by St. Louis author William Federer. This is a labor of love for Federer who remembers as a child receiving a book about Carver that inspired him to emulate the character traits of the former slave.
Did you know Missouri can count George Washington Carver as one of our own? After the death of his parents, George was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Moses Carver, residents of Diamond Grove Missouri. He attended school in Neosho, Missouri as well as a business college in Kansas City.
Carver's story is inspirational because of the incredible obstacles he had to overcome, and because of his deep faith in Jesus Christ. He was born into slavery, experienced the loss of most of his family, felt the sting of poverty, and encountered door-closing racism. However, before his life was over, Carver was an internationally known chemist who advised Presidents and Congress, and was offered jobs by prominent men like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. His great mission in life was to help bring education and moral uplift to those less fortunate.
Carver is best known for discovering hundreds of uses for the peanut, which in turn gave the post-Civil War South a soil-replenishing crop that could be turned into a viable economic future. His horticultural discoveries took place at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, led by Booker T. Washington. He would teach his students in the classroom, but also journey out to the poor farmers, instructing them on how to take care of the soil.
The particular focus of Federer's book is the spiritual life of Carver. By reading the private letters Carver sent to his friends, we are able to discover the spiritual depth and passion of the man. In 1921, Carver addressed the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee regarding the endless uses of the peanut. At the end of his address, the chairman asked:
"Dr. Carver how did you learn all of these things?"
Carver answered, "From an old book."
"What book?" asked the chairman.
Carver replied, "The Bible."
The chairman inquired, "Does the Bible tell about peanuts?"
"No, sir" Dr. Carver replied, "But it tells me about the God who made the peanut. I asked Him to show me what to do with the peanut, and He did."
Such anecdotes reveal two of the character traits of Carver. First, he had a deep respect for God and His Word. Second, he believed that hard work and personal industry was often the divine means by which God brought blessing to His people.
Carver's faith was rooted in Christ. He wrote to a friend saying, "Oh how I wish the people would awake up from their lethargy and come out soul and body for Christ." Speaking of his students, Carver said, `I want them to find Jesus, and make Him a daily and hourly part of themselves." When asked about the secret of his success in life, he responded by saying, "It is simple. It is found in the Bible, `In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths."
George Washington Carver was truly a great Christian and American citizen. This book by William Federer makes an excellent companion piece to some of the longer biographies of Carver. Put it in the hands of young men and women, and you will be giving them an opportunity to find inspiration from the life of a man committed to God.
Customer Reviews:
A Disappointment.......2006-04-08
Having read other books on George Washington Carver's life I was very impressed with his faith in God, humility and refusal to accept promotion and monetary gain. Not to mention his incredible scientific contributions to all races. I bought this book thinking it would include a collections of his own writings (which it does) to get a more personal view of the man. Instead it seemed to be a book about George Washington Carver in the author's words. The letters are obviously edited and I found myself at variance with the author on his interpretations of them. Carvers human traits are magnified until he is often portrayed as a egomaniac who continually sought the praise of others and was unsure of his accomplishments. Tuskagee is even portrayed as a plantation! (Chapter 4 is entitled "The Tuskagee Plantation"). The other books I have read certainly did not hide his flaws (which all of us as humans share) but I came away with a desire to read more about a man who I came to admire and desire to emulate in many ways. His humility and sense of God's purpose in his life have been an inspiration to myself and my family. My opinion of Carver remains the same. This book will not remain in our library.
A good introduction to Carver.......2005-10-16
A good introduction to Carver, who was a man of charm and impracticality, intensity and feminine tenderness, humility and immense ego, and who was simultaneously devoted to Christian orthodoxy and an ideosyncratic strain of nature mysticism. Kremer's introduction is nicely written and strikes a proper balance between hero-worship and debunking. Despite the black scientist's unusual combination of personality traits, his virtues and faults remained largely constant throughout his career, so some of Kremer's examples seem repetitious. That's no problem. In books like this one, you can skip and skim in good conscience.
what a brillant mind.......2000-02-02
George Washington Carver is a pioneer.his accomplishments are the foundations of this Country.a must read for all people who want to know about people that have made contributions to Society&the World at large.
Book Description
Military history as told through the lives and deeds of warfare's most famous commanders, from ancient Greece through the World Wars, VietNam, and the end of the twentieth century
Beginning with Leonides of Sparta, who died at Thermopylae in 480 b.c.e., and ending with General Giap, a Vietnamese leader; Moshe Dayan, commander of the Israeli Defense Force during the 1967 Six-Day War; and Colin Powell, Military Commanders provides an informative overview of the careers and battles of one hundred military commanders and their places in history. Divided by eras, the material covers the ancient world, the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings, the Middle Ages, the Napoleonic period, the American War of Independence and the Civil War, the two World Wars, and the postwar conflicts.
Each entry provides a chronology of major events as well as a summary of achievements. The entries, both fascinating and easy to read, succeed in providing a clear yet nuanced picture of the role of the individual in historical events.
An engaging and thought-provoking book, full of facts, pertinent quotations, and anecdotes, Military Commanders is sure to prove of interest to a wide range of readers.
Customer Reviews:
Don't buy this book.......2007-06-30
The book is full of errors. The quotations are misrepresented, the commanders are put in the wrong era (of the 6 Americans listed as fighting in the American War of Independence, only 1 actually did so; 4 of the others fought in the American Civil War, a hundred years later), other writings, such as Clausewitz' "On War" are denigrated. It's not an accurate, well thought out book, even for the young reader to which it is marketed.
Good Bios Of Military Commanders Throughout History.......2004-12-30
I recently purchased this book and I think that it's a pretty good assemblance of short bios of some of the most sucessful military commanders throughout history and I really like that it includes the well-known(i.e. Napoleon, Rommel, Lee, Jackson, Washington, Hannibal, etc.) as well as some of the "unknowns"(such as Windgate) and have intresting bios on all of them.
The only problem that I have with this book is that some of the quotes are slightly wrong or have been attributed to the wrong person.
With that, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about these people and their achievements.
Book Description
The autobiography of an unsung hero of the Greatest Generation, a leader on the frontlines of American history
John Whitehead began life in Montclair, New Jersey, as a child of the Depression and went on to lead an exemplary life in the years of the Greatest Generation. In this intimate, charming autobiography, he shares his stories and the lessons he's learned about quiet leadership.
He describes how on D-Day he commanded one of the landing crafts at Omaha Beach, and witnessed one of the greatest battles in American military history. Later, in his role as co-chair of Goldman Sachs, he was one of the pioneers of the globalization of international finance that was to change the face of American business. In 1985, Whitehead was appointed Deputy Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan and became the architect of the Reagan administration's successful efforts to wean the countries of Eastern Europe from the Soviet Union and to open up space there for the democratic movements that eventually resulted in the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Most recently, he was appointed by New York Governor George Pataki as Chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which is charged with the task of rebuilding Ground Zero. Whitehead provides a first-hand account of the difficult decisions the LMDC has made in meeting its goals of re-developing lower Manhattan and honoring the victims of 9/11 as the capstone of his remarkable career.
Customer Reviews:
A compelling personal account of a life well-lived.......2007-09-27
A brief summary of John Whitehead's accomplishments thus far indicates the nature and extent of his "life in leadership": most recently, chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC); previously, co-chairman of Goldman Sachs and then deputy secretary of state, second-in-command to Secretary George Shultz, in the Reagan administration; also tenures as chairman of the governing boards (at one point or another) of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the United Nations Association, the International Rescue Committee, the Harvard Board of Overseers, Haverford College from which he earned a B.A. degree, and the Asia Society. It should also be noted that, during World War Two, Ensign Whitehead commanded a Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel (LCVP) or "Higgins boat" that successfully delivered troops to Omaha beach on the first day of the Normandy Invasion.
With all due respect to Whitehead's numerous and considerable accomplishments, however, what most impressed throughout his memoirs is his passionate commitment to being an effective leader of others whose welfare has been entrusted to his care. He has always cared deeply, indeed passionately about sustaining that commitment, whatever the given circumstances may be.
As a case in point, after retiring from Goldman Sachs, Whitehead was determined to disengage himself from his various responsibilities and therefore "was dead set against" accepting New York Governor George Pataki's invitation to serve as chairman of the LMDC, following the attack on the World Trade Center. After completing a rigorous analysis of the "pros" and "cons" of acceptance, "it was clear to me that I had to say no." Then, after he looked around his office at all the photographs and memorabilia, "I took a deep breath, and I knew what I had to do. I picked up the phone again and dialed the governor, and when he came on the line I told him I'd accept." There are dozens of other, comparable situations in which White also had to make an especially difficult decision, none of which he later regretted. "I don't allow myself that luxury. What's done is done."
There are several important lessons that can be learned from Whitehead's personal as well as professional experiences that he so generously shares in this volume. Those of greatest interest and value to me include these three:
1. Effective leadership is first and foremost both a privilege and an obligation; those who would lead others must embrace the obligations of trust, compassion, and dedication as well as of rigorous preparation, precise and enlightened decision-making, and courage. It is worth recalling that Dante reserved the last and worst ring in hell for those who, in a moral crisis, preserved their neutrality.
2. Effective leadership also requires not only an understanding and appreciation of teamwork but also a determination to help develop effective leadership skills in one's associates. Hence the importance of recognizing and, yes, celebrating the achievements of others.
3. Finally, effective leadership functions simultaneously within three dimensions: the intellectual, the emotional, and the spiritual. Throughout history, the greatest leaders are those who possess (a) highly refined analytical skills and sufficient knowledge that enable them to make appropriate decisions, (b) a temperament that enables them to sustain a proper balance of what is most important, and also (c) what is often referred to as a "moral compass." As Bill George has so eloquently explained in his book True North, authentic leaders must be authentic people.
When concluding his memoirs, Whitehead observes that he can't help thinking how "lucky" he has been. "Mine has been a good life, filled with lots of fun, interesting experiences, drama, and an engagement with serious issues at the highest level...I have lived at a time when there has been a lot to be done, from fighting the Nazis to battling terrorists. I like to think I have risen to many of these challenges in my own quiet fashion, and I am confident that the next generation of leaders will meet them in their turn. I have been glad to do my part in all of these great endeavors. More than glad. From first to last, I have been thrilled to be in on the action."
John Whitehead is an exemplary leader but also, in my opinion, an exemplary human being. My hope now is that many others, especially those preparing for a career or who have only recently embarked on one, will read and then re-read this compelling personal account of a life well-lived, committing themselves to honorable and productive service when they are also "in on the action," whenever and wherever that may be.
A brief summary of John Whitehead accomplishments thus far indicates the nature and extent of his "life in leadership": most recently, chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation LMDC); previously, co-chairman of Goldman Sachs and then deputy secretary of state, second-in-command to Secretary George Shultz, in the Reagan administration; also tenures as chairman of the governing boards (at one point or another) of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the United Nations Association, the International Rescue Committee, the Harvard Board of Overseers, Haverford College from which he earned a B.A. degree, and the Asia Society.
My hope now is that many others, especially those preparing for a career or who have only recently embarked on one, will read and re-read this compelling personal account of a life well-lived, then commit themselves to honorable and productive service when they are also "in on the action," wherever that may be.
Full of Business Nuggets.......2006-01-05
I am about through with the book and I normally don't make comment until I'm done with a book, but this man is truly remarkable. The author has lived a remarkable business life and the book is an inspirational biography full of relatable business lessons or nuggets. I have had a lot of fun laughing and learning from his life lessons.
On the other hand, I feel that the lesson I have learned most is that a balance of work and life is imperative to me. The author is twice divorced and I believe he dedicated more time to his work life than his family life. I think he is kinda reluctant to talk in more depth about it having only dedicated three pages to the topic. I think he would agree. Nonetheless, I have become a huge fan of John C. Whitehead.
Educational, Honest, and Inspiring.......2005-09-17
I had trouble finishing this book because I could barely get through a couple of pages without getting so inspired that I had to stop so I could take action on my own dreams. As a recent graduate of NYU, I was reminded that my career path will take many unexpected turns and of the possible impact I can have by following my vision and sticking to my values.
This autobiography is written with such authenticity that it is completely relatable. The author's struggle to pay his own way through college in 1939 reminded me of my own in 2000. I could relate to the feelings of triumph. And I could certainly relate to the mortifying mistakes (although perhaps I haven't yet experienced anything as bad as driving Henry Ford home in a Chevy!).
At the same time, the book is incredibly educational. History, business, political, and leadership lessons are encapsulated in every story. As Whitehead describes his experiences, certain themes begin to emerge, giving the reader tools they can apply to their own life. I found myself using lessons I derived from Whitehead's diplomacy missions in my work with others!
One of the Best Business Books Ever Written.......2005-06-27
I would highly recommend this book to anybody interested in leadership, but especially young business people at the beginning of their careers. This memoir gives an incredible inside and frank perspective on leadership of an individual who has had a more ecclectic and successful career than most people could ever hope for. Furthermore, this book is also fascinating because it provides a historical insight into the business world that a history textbook could never provide.
Lastly, I recommend this book because the leadership lessons it provides are universal. They aren't fly-by-night strategies, but basic and simple values that can be applied to almost any leadership position at any time.
Incredible Business Memoir.......2005-06-25
In my opinion, this is one of the best business memoirs ever written. While John Whitehead may not be as well known as Jack Welch or Mayor Giuliani and other individuals who've written best-selling autobiographies, in many ways his career and character are no less impressive.
This book was extremely readable and I finished it all in one day! What I appreciate the most is its honesty and integrity. As I reader, I felt that John Whitehead, now in his late 70s, wasn't writing this book as a tool to step up his own career or feed his ego. I felt that he genuinely wanted to share his experiences and the lessons he's learned from them.
Another aspect of the book that I enjoyed was the focus on character. Unlike other business memoirs, which focus on business strategies, this book focuses on simple values such as hard-work, honesty, integrity, humility, and friendliness. It is inspiring to see these values in somebody who achieved massive success as a business man, states man, and philanthropist.

Wild chimpanzees are only found in tropical Africa, where their populations have declined by more than 66% in the last 30 years. This Action Plan focuses on one of the four chimpanzee subspecies, the western chimpanzee, which is one of the two subspecies most threatened with extinction. This publication presents a plan for action that represents a consensus among all parties concerned with the conservation of chimpanzees.
