Phew, what a mess! But it's fun........1999-02-18
As Dr. David Wake put it in a review of this book, homology is a concept that serves too many masters. Choose your favorite definition and run with it, but read this book first to shop around for different definitions. They're all in there, from Roth to Goodwin to Rieppel or Shubin. Many different perspectives, little agreement or hope for resolution.

Great to carry in your pocket.......2006-04-15
This tiny book packs a lot in it. Two pop-up maps help your find your way through Amsterdam, and the listings for sights, shopping areas, entertainment, restaurants, and even flea markets are concise and helpful. I just got back from visiting the city, and I liked that I could carry this book unobtrusively. It also has a pen attached and a compass, which helped me when I couldn't decide which way to turn. I gave it only 4 stars, rather than 5, because I feel you need another clunky guide book for additional information -- I like the Michelin green guides. But this little gem is excellent while you're on the streets.

Though ostensibly written for children, this heroic and heart-wrenching His Dark Materials trilogy is beloved by readers of all ages. These three novels unlock the door to parallel universes where demons and winged creatures live side by side with humans, and a mysterious entity called Dust just might have the power to unite the universes—if it isn't destroyed first. Lyra, Pantalaimon, Will, and the rest embark on the most breathtaking, heartbreaking adventure of their lives. The fate of the universe is in their hands.
Startling revelations arrive in this conclusion to the trilogy. Lyra must pay a price to walk through the land of the dead. Dr. Malone's amber spyglass exerts a haunting power. Most shocking of all, someone knows the names of who will live—and who will die—for love. All the while war rages with the Kingdom of Heaven, a brutal battle that will uncover the secret of Dust.

Book Description
A large part of the effort of the food industry is spent in attempting to understand the limitations of the type of food that animals can eat. An understanding of the factors that influence feeding behavior can then be used to produce foodstuffs that are more attractive to the animals in question, whether they be humans, cattle, dogs, or cats. This book examines both the texture of food and the adaptations of various animals (including fish, mammals, primates, and humans) to the type of food they commonly eat. Zoologists, material scientists, and food scientists are assembled to present for the first time an integrated overview of feeding by vertebrates. The mechanical properties of various foods are considered in conjunction with the mechanics of eating them and more subjective behavioral parameters such as acceptability and palatability. The book consequently will be of interest to food scientists, zoologists, and animal behavioralists.

Book Description
Eagerly awaited by scientists and academics worldwide, the first of the complete recordings of Feynman's famous Lectures on Physics, now on CD.
Basic Books is proud to announce the first volumes of the complete audio CD collection of the recorded lectures delivered by the late Richard P. Feynman, lectures originally delivered to his physics students at Caltech and later fashioned by the author into his classic textbook Lectures on Physics. Ranging from the most basic principles of Newtonian physics to such formidable theories as Einstein's general relativity, superconductivity, and quantum mechanics, Fenyman's lectures stand as a monument of clear exposition and deep insight.
Customer Reviews:
Help your kids learn from the best.......2007-01-12
We purchased this series because we checked them out from the library and decided we should own them. The _Feynman Lectures on Physics_ are great resources for you as a parent desiring to impart these concepts. Feynman explains complex ideas through very simple and entertaining stories. ***** These CDs are a "must have" for roadtrips!
Multiple CD's in each volume.......2006-11-06
These lectures are as enjoyable as I found the "Six * pieces" series which have six CD's each.
I delayed this purchase thinking that it had only two CD's covering volumes 1-2.
Finding that it is actually a 12 disc set was a nice surprise. I'll definitely be buying more from this series.
Enojyable and interesting.......2006-06-26
I assume that most people buying this CD are like me, a math-oriented person who won't ever use quantum mechanics on his job, and isn't that interested in knowing every equation or law, but is interested in learning some of the basic ides and getting some intuition about the subject. Surely nobody who needs to *realy* learn quantum mechanics and use it on a daily basis will buy this. It's an audio CD, and you can't learn a subject like that by listening to a CD, you need to see diagrams and work problems. So my review will be from a person with that perspective.
To that end, certain of the CD's have really been very enjoyable. The collection is divided into two sets, "Basic Quantum mechanics" and "Advanced quantyum mechanics." By far, the first CD of each set is the best. I found them extremely interesting and enjoyable.
Here's an example of something very interesting: He discusses how laws of physics are symmetrical under certain changes, like if you translate or rotate. Or if you move at a constant linear velocity. In such cases the results of an experiment will be the same and there's no way to define an "absolute". This seems rather obvious, but it's interesting compared to places where the laws are NOT symmetrical: if you have a constant angular velocity, or you scale an experiment by a constant factor, the results are NOT the same. So the universe can detect absolute angular velocity, and it does have an absolute scale. Then he talks about whether or not the laws of physics are the same if you reflect things. For example, if you were trying to describe to an alien which way was "right" or "left" you come to the surprising realization that there is no simple way to do this without refering to some object that you both have seen, since the ideas of left and right are essentially arbitrary. (Same thing applies to differentiating between the north and south pole.) But, as it turns out, certain phenomena DO differentiate between "left" and "right" and so the universe is NOT symmetrical with respect to reflection. Unless you consider antimatter....
Several of the other CD's unfortunately focus a but on details which the average listener who just is interested in big picture ideas won't be interested in. Also, he writes on a chalk board and sometimes refers to the diagrams he's drawn. Most often he uses words to describe what he's saying, but there are definitely some sections where the person who can't see the chalkboard is at a major disadvantage.
One minor complaint: Although there's a voice over that divides the lecture into sections, announcing the section when a new one starts, there aren't any "tracks" on the CD. It's just one big track. To me, this seemed like a major oversight on the people making the CD's. It would have been easy to make each section a seperate track. So if you take the CD out, and then want to pick up where you left off, you have to ffwd to find your place. Lots of people will be listening in their cars on the way to work, and unless your commute is an hour, this will apply to you. Not a huge deal, but I thought it was an obvious mistake on the production team.
In summary, it's worth it just for the first CD of each set. The other CD's are pretty interesting also, but just be prepared for it to go into a bit more detail than you probably want, and to hear him referring to things he's written on a chalk board that you can't see.
Utterly compelling listening. A tour de force from a true scientific legend........2005-08-12
A fascinating, entertaining and inspirational whirlwind tour through key aspects and phenomena of physics, led by a true scientific legend of the 20th century. Although there are frequent passages of mathematical explanation and equation solving (at a blackboard that you cannot see on audio) the persistent listener is handsomely rewarded for his patience by the qualitative discussions, which are vividly and humourously animated by Feynman in his irresistible and inimitable charismatic style.
(If you really don't want to deal with ANY math, start instead with Feynman's "Six Easy Pieces: Essentials of Physics Explained by Its Most Brilliant Teacher" which is the purely qualatitive subset of the lecture series. But be warned, you will no doubt get "hooked" on Feynman and - like me - find yourself coming back for the full series.)
Use with the Feynman Lectures (Red Books).......2005-07-29
As other reviewers have stated this series has a few problems. The first is that the audio was copied from audio tapes as one long CD track without partitions which is a huge pain. The lectures are also all jumbled up into "topic areas", and the listener is left to align them to the chapters in the Feynman Lectures on Physics (the sections to which the commentator on the CD's refers are in these books. If you are learning physics for the first time, you definitely want the books to go along with at the same time.

Wherein we discover that many of the "rules" for good writing and good sex are the same: Keep your hand moving, lose control, and don't think. Goldberg brings a touch of both Zen and well... *eroticism* to her writing practice, the latter in exercises and anecdotes designed to ease you into your body, your whole spirit, while you create, the former in being where you are, working with what you have, and writing from the moment.
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Natalie Goldberg's love of writing stems from her desire to connect with herself. In this audio version of her bestselling Writing Down the Bones, this is a potentially self-absorbed wish, especially considering that the author reads from her own work and interjects morsels of wisdom gleaned from a long writing career, which includes books on writing (Wild Mind, Long Quiet Highway), creativity (The Well of Creativity), and art (Living Color). However, Goldberg's relaxed narration and Everywoman sensibility help her avoid this danger. The classroom-like reading gives listeners a growing acquaintance with Goldberg and a friendly assurance of her methods as she quips: "you can hear my New York Jewish voice nagging you." The recording also includes an interview with Goldberg, focusing on her use of Zen meditation in writing and offering additional insight into her own rule-free writing habits. (Running time: 9 hours, 6 cassettes) --Bryony Angell

Customer Reviews:
My Favorite Writing Guide!.......2007-06-01
My dad gave me this book many years ago. He always had such faith in my writing ability, and he would mail me articles, books, reviews and such all the time.
Thanks to him, I have many writing books -- inspirational, how-to, and so on. This is the only one that is dog-eared and has food and coffee stains on many pages.
I noted that one reviewer thought it was really only a book for those who write poetry. I couldn't disagree more -- I have never written poetry, don't plan on it, and actually don't particularly like it. I mostly write non-fiction articles, and I LOVE the author's philosophy!
I do my research and interviews, read-read-read about whatever subject it is I want to write about, and then when it's time to sit down and write -- I just let it flow. I don't stop to think about it -- I just GO with it. My writing has improved so much this way! I used to try to outline and plan -- and my writing was disastrous. I did not listen to my instincts, which told me that my very best writing was always, without exception, the kind that happened with no planning at all.
If you aren't afraid to write without a "plan", get this book. Even if you DO think you need a plan, get this book. Try a different way of writing, and you just might be surprised at the REAL writer within you, dying to get out and express herself (or himself)!
My problem is not with Natalie Goldberg's book..........2007-05-13
This edition is TINY. I would love to be reviewing Natalie Goldberg's book right now, but apparently Amazon saw fit not to include the warning "This book is only 3 by 4 1/2 inches in size (text inside occupies a 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inch area on the page)."
The is not the sort of book I already have mostly memorized; but if I had, perhaps it would help to have this tiny reference around to jog my memory now and again. Indeed, I do not foresee ever reading it because it is too tiny to hold, or to see. Moreover, since it is a guide to writing, I would ideally like to be jotting notes in the margins. But the margins are about an eighth of an inch wide. So you see my problem.
Amazon, please carry normal sizes. There's a reason for it.
The book that made me a writer.......2007-03-19
This is probably one of the best books ever on the subject of writing. While Goldberg hardly covers anything technical with regards to writing specific genres (be it poetry, novels, magazine articles), she triumphs by enabling the reader to overcome their writer's block, and dare to write about the things that matter to them. Simply follow her technique, apply yourself to it for years, and you will be able to write fluidly and confidently about anything that you know. No more staring at blank pages, no more tearing out your hair to get the right wording. Subsequent to reading this book, I became a poet (see[...]), a songwriter, and a novelist (with one finished book and one draft). I also, over the last ten years, have filled a 7-foot stack of notebooks with my practice writing, and forged a number of friendships over journal writing sessions. Yes, read this book, but as you read, make sure you start writing, so that the inspiration will not just be a passing phase.
THANK YOU NATALIE.......2007-03-18
Dear Natalie (and how many reviews begin with that), thank you so much for writing this book. If it weren't for your guidance, this resistant writer would still be staring out the window of her Maine summer house wishing she could be published (or that she had anything to say for that matter). A great classic book that I recommend to all my sisters on the journey....Sincerely, Pamela D. Blair, Author, The Next Fifty Years: A Guide for Women at Midlife and Beyond
Opens your world........2007-03-17
I have used all her advice and boy does it help. This lady knows where she is coming from and thats from the heart of writing. You will hope to meet her in a cafe where you could talk endlessly with her, but this book does just that. Its your meeting with this one of a kind genius who takes you on a journey of storytelling, how its done and all its secrets.

Book Description
Here is a classic book on writing by the award-winning editor of The Hartford Courant's Northeast Magazine.
Customer Reviews:
Want to elevate your non-fiction writing? Read Bloom's book.......2005-03-06
Seasoned editor Lary Bloom knows what any good screenwriter knows -- people love stories. Stories that include honest detail, true emotion, conflict, a point of view, and that show ordinary people's struggles and journeys. In this book, he reminds us that such drama is in everyday lives. He encourages journalists and non-fiction writers to take the time to explore the human drama behind the obvious bullet points of their works-in-progress. The many writing examples used in the book (Bloom has been editor to many writers) shows how doing just this elevated what could have been so-so stories with limited audience appeal to stories that are interesting to many of us.
The Writer Within is a delightful read, as Bloom applies these guidelines to his own writing.
Very Insightful.......2001-06-05
As a young person working in the magazine industry and a person that studied creative writing in college, I found Lary Bloom's book to be a highly readable guide to pursuing creative non-fiction with integrity.

Nailing the art of non-fiction writing.......2005-01-06
Seasoned editor Lary Bloom knows what any good screenwriter knows -- people love stories. Stories that include honest detail, true emotion, conflict, a point of view, and that show ordinary people's struggles and journeys. In this book, he reminds us that such drama is in everyday lives. He encourages journalists and non-ficton writers to take the time to explore the human drama behind the obvious bullet points of their works-in-progress. The many writing examples used in the book (Bloom has been editor to many writers) shows how doing just this elevated what could have been so-so stories with limited audience appeal to stories that are interesting to many of us.
The Writer Within is a delightful read, as Bloom applies these guidelines to his own writing.
