Book Description
Author Brad Herzog brings his well-received prose and soccer knowledge together with Melanie Rose's charming and realistic illustrations to detail every facet of the game. Each letter has a simple rhyme for young readers: J is for the jerseys that soccer players wear. But often in the World Cup, opponents tend to share. In a gesture of respect after a game ends, They simply swap their jerseys as if they are old friends. For older readers the expository text gives specific details about, goaltending, referees, the World Cup and many other aspects. K is for Kick follows the wildly popular Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet.
Customer Reviews:
Alphabet books a big hit.......2007-01-05
K is for Kick and all the other is the series are filled with lots of great facts.
E is for Educational.......2005-08-20
This is a great book for younger children - jam packed with soccer facts and information about the history of the game. While some of the words may be difficult for elementary-aged kids, it will certainly "kick start" their desire to learn.
An alphabet book for fans of soccer, both young and old.......2004-03-02
I have to think the idea reader for "K is for Kick: A Soccer Alphabet" is going to be the parent who is having trouble waiting for their kid to be old enough to go out on the soccer field and kick the ball around, let along trying to help the kid learn to read. Author Brad Herzog admittedly creates a two-tier format that has one part targeted on young readers learning the alphabet and the other for more advanced readers who are clearly soccer fans. But I have to think that if a kid is learning his alphabet than the idea that "C is for clubs everywhere" and gives examples of Italy's A.C. Milan and Santos in Brazil, that they probably have little idea as to where to find Italy and Brazil on the map. There are references to age appropriate aspects of the game, such as kicking and youth soccer, but then "N" stands for not only the University of North Carolina's dynasty in women's soccer but number 19, the number that UNC retired in honor of Mia Hamm.
In addition to examining the history and lore of soccer from A for a game played "all over the world" to Z for the French soccer star "Zinedine Zindane," Herzog provides detailed sidebars on each topic that supply lots of details that adult readers who are soccer fans can appreciate. This may well be one of the most impractical alphabet books I have come across, but that seems a small matter given the love of the game that infuses the entire volume. The result is one of the few alphabet books that young readers may actually enjoy more as they grow older and can read the details provided in the small print. The illustrations by Melanie Ross-Popp are energetic enough and older readers will appreciate her liberty in showing Brandi Chastain (under L for "ladies"). This is one of a series of alphabet books from Sleeping Bear Press that includes "A is for America: An American Alphabet," "M is for Maple: A Canadian Alphabet," "M is for Majestic: A National Park Alphabet," "P is for Pilgrim: A Thanksgiving Alphabet," and "Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphebet." Of course, I am waiting for the Baseball Alphabet book (H is for Home Run?).

Book Description
The engaging sister-and-brother duo from the highly acclaimed Stella & Roy are back for a second outing that will delight young readers. This time Stella and Roy are camping with their mother, and Roy really hopes to see a bear. Every time he thinks he sees bear tracks, new reader Stella is pleased to say, "Wrong, Roy," and to look in her book of animal tracks for ones that match the prints. There are coyote tracks and marmot tracks and raccoon tracks and lots of other animal tracks-but, to Roy's chagrin, no bear tracks.
At night, however, things change. Lying awake in his sleeping bag, Roy hears a clunking, rolling sound. Could it be the black plastic bear barrel, into which all leftovers have been tightly shut? Who or what is out there?
Ashley Wolff's high-spirited story gives equal weight to the pleasures of reading that Stella has recently discovered and to the rewards of persistence that younger brother Roy enjoys. Wolff's distinctive hand-tinted linocuts beautifully render the splendors of an outdoor hike, as well as the spookiness of a shadowed night. Readers will enjoy identifying tracks along with Stella and Roy, and they will thrill with Roy when he glimpses the nighttime visitor.
Customer Reviews:
Nice book for introducing camping to preschoolers.......2004-08-04
I read this book to my integrated preschool class, most of whom have never been camping. It was a nice realistic introduction to camping with vivid illustrations and characters that the children could relate to(previously I had only been able to find camping books whose main characters were nonhuman.) The camping experience in the story is true to life, touching on many details including making a safe campfire and even putting food in a bear proof containter. The story is interesting enough and the sibling relationship universal enough that my students were interested in the story without feeling like I was instructing them about camping. One nice feature was that throughout the story Stella and Roy would refer to a guidebook to discern which animals made tracks in the dirt and the illustrations were detailed and visible enough that my students could participate in Stella and Roy's discovery. On the last page of the book there are also descriptions and illustrations of the animal tracks for the reader to explore if they wish. This is also a nice book for children who have already been camping because they will likely be able to relate to it and compare it to their own experiences.
Follow Stella and Roy to remember your own family adventure........1999-10-19
Ever go camping? Stella and Roy and their mother won't forget this trek. Young readers won't either. This charming book will invite you and your youngster back again, over and over all through the year, to search out the wildlife hidden long the trail. Although set in Yosemite, the story can easily be translated into where you live. Talking over the family's last summer adventure and anticipating the next one will be the natural outcome of sharing this amusing tale of sibling interaction.

Book Description
Track of the Grizzly is the culmination of one of the most ambitious wildlife studies ever undertaken - the Craighead field study of the grizzly bear, carried out in Yellowstone National Park and the huge ecosystem, spanning three states, in which it lies. Over a period of thirteen years, beginning in 1959, Frank Craighead, his brother John, and their colleagues used sophisticated scientific techniques to track hundreds of grizzlies, to discover the bears' social organization and seasonal movements, their breeding and feeding habits, and their life spans. This fascinating book illuminates the shortcomings of America's current system of wildlife management and provides an intimate, detailed, and definitive portrait of the greatest carnivore in our hemisphere.
Customer Reviews:
Track of the Grizzly.......2006-11-11
A very readable, enjoyable book. It was published in 1979 so I'm sure there's more and newer information on the bears, but this is a great starting place. It's author (and his brother) are famous for their early grizzly studies.
Track of the Grizzly.......2003-06-30
A shortened and less scientific version of the Craighead's classic study of the Yellowstone grizzlies. For any one who wants to know more about grizzlies, this book is a must!!!!
The REAL story of Grizzly Bears.......2000-08-15
A very well written and entertaining book about the Criaghead's multi year study of the Grizzly Bears of the Yellowstone Eco system. The book while written by a Biologist, is very entertaining and an easy (light) read....not a scientific paper.
If you want to understand what Grizzly Bears are REALLY like, and want to understand this interesting animal- this is your book.
It's a great book to read if you visit the Yellowstone area and are somewhat "Bear-a-phobic" as a result of the sensational bear attack books. I was reading this book in Yellowstone this summer when I had my 1st bear incident in the 15 years I have been coming to the park. Armed with good information the "incident" became an interesting encounter with another one of YNP's great animals.
This is a book worth buying and keeping in your library.

My kids love to bake the simple and tasty treats out of this book all by themselves.
Really Great Kids Cookbook!.......2000-07-08
I have purchased several children's cookbooks recently, but this book has by far been the one we have used the most! It is really easy to use and has some very cute recipes in it. Everything is easy for the children to make and it all has been very good to eat. The cute little Alaskan themed names are unique as well. I highly recommend this book!
Alaska Kidsnacks Cookbook.......2000-05-02
I'm a media specialist and I used this book for my first grade's Alaska Day held in the media center. I used several recipes for a cooking station that the students visited. They loved making the recipes because they were fun, easy, and had Alaskan names. They especially loved the snack-- Denali Peaks. Since the snacks are named after geographic locations, it was a great way to integrate a geography lesson, too. After we made the snacks, first graders located the town or region that the snack was named on a map. Kudos to the creator of this wonderful cookbook which makes a wonderful teaching resource on Alaska!

Customer Reviews:
When is a bear paw not?.......2002-12-07
This book is narrowly focused on a technique for quilt-making based on variations of the popular bear's paw block. The idea grew out of teaching experiences at a quilt camp, and involves replacing the traditional center or "paw pad" of this block with a simple sampler block, like the nine-patch or the shoofly. The effect can be quite dramatic and beautiful, as well as being a lot of fun. The book contains instructions for making the sampler blocks as well as general information on rotary cutting, borders, and binding. Full color with lots of example quilts.

Book Description
This volume provides a practical introduction to the use of high-pressure techniques in chemistry and physics. The authors provide details of the experimental methods and equipment needed to carry out observations and measurements at very high pressures. The pressures involved range from a few thousand bars for some chemical studies to hundreds of thousands of bars for some physical experimentation. High-pressure techniques may be used to learn more about the structure of matter and mechanisms of chemical reactions. This volume includes detailed descriptions of equipment to measure the following criteria under high pressure conditions: compressibility and equations of state; dielectric constants and conductance; viscocity; X-ray and neutron diffraction; optical absorption and luminescence; Mossbauer spectra; NMR. IR. and UV spectra; molecular dynamics; kinetics; organic and inorganic synthesis; electro-chemistry and electrophoresis. Applications such as the preservation of food are also discussed. High-pressure techniques in chemistry and physics: a practical approach is a comprehensive and detailed guide for all those engaged in high-pressure research and a valuable source of information for newcomers to the field. Each chapter contains useful toptics on specific equipment and techniques, as well as step-by-step protocols, essential background information, and key citations in the literature.

Book Description
Over the past two decades, no field of scientific inquiry has had a more striking impact across a wide array of disciplines–from biology to physics, computing to meteorology–than that known as chaos and complexity, the study of complex systems. Now astrophysicist John Gribbin draws on his expertise to explore, in prose that communicates not only the wonder but the substance of cutting-edge science, the principles behind chaos and complexity. He reveals the remarkable ways these two revolutionary theories have been applied over the last twenty years to explain all sorts of phenomena–from weather patterns to mass extinctions.
Grounding these paradigm-shifting ideas in their historical context, Gribbin also traces their development from Newton to Darwin to Lorenz, Prigogine, and Lovelock, demonstrating how–far from overturning all that has gone before–chaos and complexity are the triumphant extensions of simple scientific laws. Ultimately, Gribbin illustrates how chaos and complexity permeate the universe on every scale, governing the evolution of life and galaxies alike.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book.......2007-01-25
I wish this book was available when I went to college. We studied a lot of the things John Gribbin talks about. But it was presented as something very abstract, "pure" advanced math without any connection to the real world around. As such it made for a VERY boring subject and torturous four years.
I am truly amazed at how seemingly easy John Gribbin can take the same subject and explain it so eloquently and in very practical terms! In my view this is a perfect example of a great book (see Mortimer Adler's "How to Read a Book", a must for anyone who wants to read analytically) - it can teach most people something new and make your brain work at it.
Finally, I would not have stumbled upon this book if it wasn't for Charlie Munger (of Berkshire Hathaway fame) and his annual book recommendations at BRK's annual meeting. He is a wise man and this was a proof that it's worth listening to anything he says.
Cheo-plexity exposed........2006-10-13
It is a very informative, unique work by Gribbin about fascinating topics of physics, biology, life and Universe. What is more important it presents brand new experiments and many (maybe too many) mathematical models of network interconnections between simple parts and models of self-organized criticalities in the phase transition on the edge of chaos. This sounds like difficult text, and indeed, especially the third chapter (bifurcations and fractals) is not an easy read. Persistent and math inclined learner should try to grasp the sense of Power Law ("1/f noise"). Then after, satisfaction and pleasure of reading will grow, everything will become clear towards the end of the book. As a long time ago trained chemist, I was surprised discovering Lars Onsager's description of the FOURTH law of thermodynamics and that Alan Turing was not only an "iconic computer man" but worked on oscillating chemical reactions called "chemical clocks". These reactions (quote): "seemed to fly in the face of the second law of thermodynamics"! I was quite enlightened how phase transition can be explained as phenomena taking place on the edge of chaos. Last chapter is mostly devoted to James Lovelock and "Gaia Theory" presenting Earth as a self-organizing, entropy reducing system (check his last book "Revenge of Gaia"). Maverick physicist Lee Smolin has formulated the similar hypothesis about Milky Way. The field of chaos and complexity states that simple rules must underline many apparently noisy, complicated aspects of nature - and this is what John Gribbin writes about. Whether chaoplexologists will find any profound new scientific laws only time can tell. For now enjoy and reduce your entropy by absorbing information emanating from this book.
A Beautiful Piece of Literature.......2006-06-06
I have just finished reading Deep Simplicity and felt the urge to tell anyone who would listen how I felt about the book. Read the other reviewers to find out what the book is about.
There have been very few occasions and very few books that moved me in the way that Deep Simplicity did, for it is a work of art and without doubt a genuinely beautiful piece of literature. What's more, I feel that the beauty inherent in the book is self-similar on many scales, from the lucidly illustrative metaphors, to paragraphs that grab you as they weave delicately expounded threads together, to the overall structure and flow of the book itself. I felt privileged to have read the book.
After I finished I was left with a tremendous sense of appreciation for and recognition with our planet, its biosphere, life, and the Universe at large; even for my fellow man - although our depredations are made strikingly apparent. My final and lasting feeling is one of profound enlightenment; something felt when previously reading Gribbin, but not to this extent.
Thank You John Gribbin, for writing this book; $24.95 in one currency, priceless in another.
The Simplicity of Chaos and Complexity.......2006-04-10
Dr. John Gribbin has written a number of books on physics, and his sixth book, "Deep Simplicity: Bringing Order to Chaos and Complexity", covers the basics of chaos theory. While I wouldn't call this book simple reading, he does make the subject very accessible for those willing to exercise their minds. Dr. Gribbin does a very good job of explaining the origins of Chaos Theory, and how it applies to natural law from weather to earthquakes to life on Earth and the search for life elsewhere in the Universe. He goes even further in looking at the behavior of man made phenomena such as traffic gridlock and the stock market
The content of this book gets five stars, but I do feel that it could have been organized more effectively. Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning about chaos theory and how it relates to our place in the Universe.
The science of chaos and complexity explained clearly--FINALLY!!!.......2006-01-27
+++++
This book, by astrophysicist John Gribbin, gives us insight into the concepts of "chaos" and "complexity." Chaos occurs when a small change in the starting conditions of a process produces a big change in the outcome of that process. A complex system is one that is chaotic, and in which the way the system develops feeds back on itself to change the way it is developing.
Is there an order or a simplicity that underlies chaos and complexity? According to Gribbin, there is. He states, "the great insight is that chaos and complexity follow simple laws-essentially the same simple laws discovered by Isaac Newton more than three hundred years ago." Gribbin goes on to make this startling statement:
"Chaos begets complexity, and complexity begets life."
So what is the theme of this book? Answer: "It is the simplicity that underpins complexity, and thereby makes life possible, that is the theme of this book."
The first three chapters tell us about Chaos. They are titled as follows:
(1) Order (or simplicity) out of chaos
(2) The return of chaos
(3) Chaos out of order
The next chapter introduces another important concept. It's titled:
(4) From chaos to complexity
The next two chapters introduce and discuss the most complex system of all. They're entitled:
(5) Earthquakes, (mass) extinctions, and emergence (of life)
(6) The facts of life
The final chapter looks into the biggest question facing science today: "Is there life beyond Earth, elsewhere in our Solar System, or out in the Universe at large?" The title of this chapter is:
(7) Life beyond
Throughout the book, Gribbin reveals how these revolutionary theories of chaos and complexity have been applied over the last two decades to explain all sorts of different, seemingly unrelated phenomena: from traffic jams and the stock market to weather patterns, the formation of galaxies, and the evolution of life. To make the book even more readable and interesting, all these ideas are put in their proper historical context.
There are over 35 illustrations (in the form of graphs, diagrams, etc.) that I found were helpful in visually describing key concepts.
There is also a short but invaluable glossary that I found to be very beneficial. In fact, it is from here that I obtained the above definitions of chaos and complexity.
Who is this book written for? I would say anybody interested in chaos and complexity. However, because Gribbin includes a wide range of scientific disciplines-from biology to physics and computing, meteorology to cosmology-I would recommend having a general scientific background. As well, knowledge of basic mathematics would help.
Finally, the only problem I had with this book is that each chapter is written as one, long narrative with no breaks. I feel that it would have been beneficial to have each chapter divided into subsections to ease reading.
In conclusion, this is a well-written book on what can be a difficult subject. If you want to learn the principles behind chaos and complexity, then this is the book to read!!
