Product Description
The international community has committed itself to achieve, by 2010, a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional, and national levels. Yet, despite growing awareness, and major efforts in all countries, the latest evidence indicates that biodiversity continues to be lost at a terrifying pace, resulting in what some call the greatest mass extinction since dinosaurs roamed the planet, 65 million years ago. A range of methods have been developed to value ecosystems, and the services they provide, as well as the costs of conservation. The methods available are increasingly sensitive, and robust, but they are often incorrectly used. One reason is poor understanding of the purposes of valuation and what questions it can, or cannot, answer. As a result, decision makers may get misleading guidance on the value of ecosystems, and their conservation. In this context, the Bank, IUCN-The World Conservation Union, and the Nature Conservancy have worked together to clarify the aims and uses of economic valuation, focusing on the types of questions that valuation can answer, and the type of valuation that is best suited to each purpose. How Much is an Ecosystem Worth? is the result of that cooperation. It aims to provide guidance on how economic valuation can be used to address specific, policy-relevant questions about nature conservation.

Book Description
In one of the most beautiful river valleys in Europe, in the region known as Périgord in southwest France, castles crown the hills, and the surrounding villages seem carved all of a piece out of the local stone. In 1985, in the shadow of one of these medieval castles, Betsy Draine and Michael Hinden fell in love with a small stone house that became their summer home.
Like any romance, this one has had its ups and downs, and Betsy and Michael chart its course in this delightful memoir. They offer an intimate glimpse of a region little known to Americans—the Dordogne valley, its castles and prehistoric art, its walking trails and earthy cuisine—and describe the charms and mishaps of setting up housekeeping thousands of miles from home.
Along with the region’s terrain and culture, A Castle in the Backyard introduces us to the people of Périgord—the castle’s proprietor, the village children, the gossipy real-estate agent, the rascally mason, and the ninety-year-old widow with a tale of heartbreak. A celebration of a place and its people, the book also reflects on the future of historic Périgord as tourism and development pose a challenge to its graceful way of life.
Winner of the 2002 August Derleth Nonfiction Award, awarded by the Council for Wisconsin Writers
Customer Reviews:
Take a joyful journey to a French summer home.......2006-08-17
This book is a charming joy. The authors' successful search for a modest summer home in France will take the reader on their own dreamy journey, exploring what it would be like to live in a French country village and to succeed in making friends with the villagers. Great insights into what rural French folks are really like, and how to make them your friends. The book also underscores the importance of finding what is truly important to you in your life.
what a great story.......2006-08-01
very entertaining book about buying a vacation home in France. I love sw france--the food, the villages, the people. This book is about an American couple from Wisconsin--looking for a house in SW France-- buying a house and then living there for the summers. They become friendly with the residents of the small village. They tell of how they were invited to dinner parties ---the food that was served-- the people the conversations etc......Its great! I really enjoyed it.
follow your dream!.......2006-05-07
I bought this book while we were looking for our own house in the Dordogne (most wonderful spot on earth -- go, see it for yourself!), and found it both comforting and helpful (as well as funny, touching and insightful). We found our own house a short time later (in Aubeterre sur Dronne, a village in the Charente just across the border from the Dordogne), and are giving this book to friends and family to help explain the experience and the lure of southwestern France.
A realistic fantasy.......2006-01-31
Like Mayle's YEAR in PROVENCE and Mayes' UNDER the TUSCAN SUN, this title follows a couple through the pleasures and pitfalls of buying a vacation home in a lovely, exotic locale. Draine and Hinden, both professors at UW Madison, purchase a home in southwest France. Much more low-key than the Mayle and Mayes books mentioned, CASTLE in the BACKYARD has considerably fewer pages devoted to construction pitfalls and perils as well as a cast of much less colorful characters. All in all, CASTLE seems like a much more realistic story than other tales of buying a dream home in a dream location, which in my opinion, made this tale a bit less compelling a read.
This book gives the reader the "real" view of France and the French.......2005-09-24
The title might lead the reader to think that this book is about how to buy real estate in France. It does provide some very helpful tips in that regard, but the book goes well beyond buying real estate. The authors provide insight into how cultures can interreact. The book is an absolute must for anyone interested in the nuances of the French as well as getting eyewitness tour of the Dordogne region. The book is educational, poignant at times, funny at times and always a joy to read.

Liz. . . .The Tub?.......2006-01-12
This book was really good. I love Liz, and feel sorry for her now that she is pudgy and
can't fit any of her clothes from when she was The Liz Wakefield. Here are changes:
Depressed, tubby, looks like a sassuage in her sheath, on a diet. I hate Todd for
doing this to her! All the things he dated her in and thought she looked beautiful
in can't fit! I will look forward to a time where she will be fit and happy.
A little heavy, but when did Franchine ever fail?.......2006-01-10
Aaaaaahhh. Frachine knocks off the Wakefields-are-perfect stuff. As Elizabeth puts it,
''only one of the Waefield twins were a perfect size six, and it wasn't Elizabeth.''
In SVH, Liz was always thin. Jessica was aways dieting. But now Liz is on a diet, because
she put on so much wieght. I roared my head off when Liz was trying to get into the
sheath! On to Tom. Liz sounds perfect for him. They've had their worlds turned upside down since the got to college, so their a little scared approach their new selves.
I love this book.
Jessica and Mike get closer.......2005-01-14
Jessica moves in with Mike McAllery and sleeping with him,She has sex with him the first time,Alexandra is now one of Jessica's friends[Sound familiar] kind of like Amy Sutton from 6th Grade She was Elizabeth's best friend, then when she moved away, then when she returned to Sweet Valley, she and Elizabeth had nothing in common as 11th graders,She was boy-crazy as Jessica, and a Cheerleader. Alexandra is in Theta Sorority, and she and Elizabeth drifted apart. Why Can't I find friends so easy at Mott? Elizabeth meets Nina Harper,a black student. Todd dates this girl named Lauren, and has Sex with her.
Great Book.......2002-10-13
This book raises alot of questions about what will happen to Jessica and Elizabeth. Jessica is looked down on for sleeping with and over at Mike's House.

Book Description
This book will be useful to anyone who wants to understand the use of quantum theory for the description of physical processes. It is a graduate level text, ideal for independent study, and includes numerous figures, exercises, bibliographical references, and even some computer programs.
The first chapters introduce formal tools: the mathematics are precise, but not excessively abstract. The physical interpretation too is rigorous. It makes no use of the uncertainty principle of other ill-defined notions. The central part of the book is devoted to Bell's theorem and to the Kochen-Specker theorem. It is here that quantum phenomena depart most radically from classical physics. There has recently been considerable progress on these issues, and the latest developments have been included. The final chapters discuss further topics of current research: spacetime symmetries, quantum thermodynamics and information theory, semiclassical methods, irreversibility, quantum chaos, and especially the measuring process. In particular, it is shown how modern techniques allow the extraction of more information from a physical system than traditional measurement methods.
For physicists, mathematicians and philosophers of science with an interest in the applications and foundations of quantum theory. The volume is suitable as a supplementary graduate textbook.

A High class presentation of fundemental quantum theory .......2007-09-02
This book is the result of something like six years of work. The highly contemplative tone of this deep composition reflects the labor of the author. It is extremely well presented. The many problems range from quite easy (but not trivial) to time demanding mini-projects. The book is written for self-study, too. Which, to me, is something more authors need to embrace.
Final Note: This texts serves as a sophisticated introduction to the foundational aspects of quantum theory. A bit of higher math, computational skill, and a working knowledge of elementary theoretical physics will be useful.
Wonderful Book.......2007-01-05
I don't have a physics background. I wanted to understand from the scratch the connections between thermodynamics, information theory and the quantum world. Also I wanted to understand the issue of quantum entanglement a little deeper. I wouldn't say that I found everything that I was looking for in this book. But it did give me a very good start and more pointers for what to look for.
Very good.......1998-03-23
One of the rare books that give a deep and balanced account of Quantum Theory... Concepts are emphasized as much as techniques. Anyone who wants to understand (as opposed to merely use) quantum mechanics should at least have a brief look through such a book...
Book Description
Have you ever wondered why the language of modern physics centres on geometry? Or how quantum operators and Dirac brackets work? What a convolution really is? What tensors are all about? Or what field theory and lagrangians are, and why gravity is described as curvature?
This book takes you on a tour of the main ideas forming the language of modern mathematical physics. Here you will meet novel approaches to concepts such as determinants and geometry, wave function evolution, statistics, signal processing, and three-dimensional rotations. You'll see how the accelerated frames of special relativity tell us about gravity. On the journey, you'll discover how tensor notation relates to vector calculus, how differential geometry is built on intuitive concepts, and how variational calculus leads to field theory. You will meet quantum measurement theory, along with Green functions and the art of complex integration, and finally general relativity and cosmology.
The book takes a fresh approach to tensor analysis built solely on the metric and vectors, with no need for one-forms. This gives a much more geometrical and intuitive insight into vector and tensor calculus, together with general relativity, than do traditional, more abstract methods.
Don Koks is a physicist at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation in Adelaide, Australia. His doctorate in quantum cosmology was obtained from the Department of Physics and Mathematical Physics at Adelaide University. Prior work at the University of Auckland specialised in applied accelerator physics, along with pure and applied mathematics.
Customer Reviews:
Delivers on its promise.......2007-05-21
As an advanced undergraduate physics student, I found this book to be one of the few physics books which focusses on bridging the gap between physical understanding and the mathematics. I found the book a bit too orientated towards diff forms and relativity. To round it off a bit more, I would have liked to see some of the more difficult concepts from electromagnetics included e.g explanations behind quadrupole tensors, stress-energy tensor, helmoltz decomposition and TE,TM,TEM waves.
Book Description
Aimed at graduate physics and chemistry students, this is the first comprehensive monograph covering the concept of the geometric phase in quantum physics from its mathematical foundations to its physical applications and experimental manifestations. It contains all the premises of the adiabatic Berry phase as well as the exact Anandan-Aharonov phase. It discusses quantum systems in a classical time-independent environment (time dependent Hamiltonians) and quantum systems in a changing environment (gauge theory of molecular physics). The mathematical methods used are a combination of differential geometry and the theory of linear operators in Hilbert Space. As a result, the monograph demonstrates how non-trivial gauge theories naturally arise and how the consequences can be experimentally observed. Readers benefit by gaining a deep understanding of the long-ignored gauge theoretic effects of quantum mechanics and how to measure them.

Book Description
This collection of essays presented to Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker on the occasion of his 90th birthday addresses a wide readership interested in astronomy, physics, and the history and philosophy of science. The articles treat subjects such as the social responsibility of scientists, thermonuclear processes in stars and stellar neutrinos, turbulence and the emergence of planetary systems. Furthermore, considerable attention is paid to the unity of nature, the nature of time, and to information about, and interpretation of, the structure of quantum theory, all important philosophical problems of our times. The last section describes von Weizsäcker's ur-hypothesis and how it will theoretically permit the construction of particles and interactions from quantized bits of information.
Book Description
Kendra Quillan is the leader of Survivors, a feminist/dyke band in Toronto poised for big-time success. Her Ice Maiden mystique and guitar saavy are central to the band's success and her own persona, but her world begins to shatter when she wakes up to the first lover she's had in a decade and wants to kill him.
What birds can only whisper is an engrossing novel about one woman's journey from imminent career success back into her past to confront her childhood. With the help of her lover and her friends in the band, she pieces together the puzzle of her past, a process that can lead to freedom or the brink of madness.

Secrets, Screech, and Song.......2007-05-04
We know that birds, dating back to prehistoric knowledge, must be the bearers of great secrets. In WHAT BIRDS CAN ONLY WHISPER, Julie Brickman uses birds to carry us -- in their varying colors and plumage, in the song and screech of their calls, in the flutter of their wings -- to the most unbearable secrets. This is the story of a young woman scattered through a series of images: the dollbaby, the outdoorswoman, the trances of a singer/songwriter, all whose most painful memories of sexual abuse are carried away by the yellow-rumped warbler, the ruby colored cardinal we meet on the first page, the taloned hawk that claws after smaller, innocent prey.
Perhaps the greatest triumph and the most difficult reading comes in the way Brickman gives both victim and predator a full human form. We'd like to believe that a father could not abuse his daughter (that any adult male could never abuse a child this way) without being detached, or without some major portion of himself or his soul missing. BIRDS shows us otherwise. This predator is purposeful and entitled. The worst is the way he views his daughter as something made for him -- something he systematically shapes and takes for himself.
BIRDS is a story of images and colors, of unbearable secrets made bearable by the beauty and the care of the birds that bring the past to light. This novel has an incredible sense of human knowledge and responsibility. Like her birds and her main character Kendra, Brickman calls out to us all, singing for those whose warbles and songs and screeches would not reach us without her.
And thankfully -- Thankfully! -- for this one survivor, love is strong enough to win.
A survivor's journey back to life.......2007-04-03
What Birds Can Only Whisper is the story of Kendra Quillan, leader of a rock band with an impassioned following, but oddly incapable, herself, of certain forms of passion. The story begins the morning after a sexual encounter that Kendra can't remember. Her blackout is due not to drugs or alcohol but to the ravages of long-ago incidents that Kendra has for years successfully blocked out ... until those damaged places in her soul are stirred by a man who truly loves her.
What follows is the opening of the protective walls Kendra has built to shield herself from a truth too painful to bear. In the end, love requires of Kendra a confrontation with the past that will either save her life or drive her to madness.
In Kendra, Julie Brickman paints a devastating but beautiful portrait of the trauma survivor's exodus from self. No other author has so skillfully and imaginatively evoked the mysterious half-world where the traumatized go to survive. And no other author has ever illustrated so vividly the delicate act of navigation by which a survivor finally returns to herself.
Brickman's harrowing yet deeply compassionate book, dedicated to the silenced inside us all, speaks in ringing tones of the freedom that comes from facing the evils of the past, and of the joy that, in the end, runs deeper than sorrow.
