I like this book alot.......2007-09-24

I've had this book for about 10 years and I've enjoyed using it during that time. The positives are that it has a lot of the trees of the Northeast, many illustrations (b/w line drawings), keys to genus and species for some groups and species accounts arranged taxonomically- also it's pretty cheap! You can identify trees either using the key or trying by leave illustrations. The negatives are that I think it was last revised in the 1950's so it's probably not the most up to date, the keys can be pretty technical and many traits are not illustrated, there are quirky things like leaves are always abreviated lvs. and a superscript 0 by a species name means it's a shrub and a 00 means it's a vine.
Overall, I really like this book, but you should expect something pretty technical and it would help if you've had a botany/field ID'ing class before.

Graves' book is authoritative, comprehsive and clear. It includes virtually all the trees and shrubs you are likely to encounter in the area. The outstanding illustrations are a major resource in themselves; combined with the winter and summer keys and the descriptions of each plant this is the only tree and shrub book you will need.

Her story is fun and whimsical........2007-08-07

Carrie Rosten's CHLOE LEIBERMAN (SOMETIMES WRONG) tells of a high school senior whose entire life revolves around her interest in fashion. Chloe is half Jewish and half Chinese, hasn't applied to college yet, and dreams about going to design school in London instead. Her story is fun and whimsical.

This book is awesome!.......2005-09-22

So, my girlfriend forced me to read this, since she couldn't stop talking about the darn thing, and I have to admit, it was one of the most entertaining reads ever! And I'm a 17-year old dude! The characters are incredibly colorful, full of personality and quirkiness. As soon as pau-pau passed gas, I was rolling on the floor laughing my head off. And lets not forget the dog Wally who compulsively humps anything that moves when he gets nervous (which is a lot like some of my friends). The author was a genius for coming up with that bit. I msut say, it was awfully refreshing to finally read a character-driven novel. It is, after all, a book about people.

I loved this book!.......2005-09-17

This book is an inspiration to every creative person out there who has a dream. As someone whose parents wanted nothing more than for me to go to an Ivy League school and follow them into the world of banking, I couldnt have identified more with Chloe. Although she loves her eccentric family and wants to please them, she knows in her heart of hearts that design school is where she is meant to be and that she must follow her passion. You dont have to love fashion or clothes as much as the reader or her main character does to like this book. The writer speaks to young girls everywhere. She writes with a sense of humor and incredible wit and I LOVED the glossary in the back of the book. I cant wait for the next book to see what happens to Chloe. Three cheers for Carrie Rosten!

Great book!.......2005-09-16

Chloe may not have styling superpowers but knows style when she sees it - and when she doesn't. I was struck by how cute and cleverly written this book is. Chloe totally reminds me of myself, even though I'm only 13 and she's 17. I aspire to be a fashion designer and I just loved reading this book and her plight to make this world a prettier place, one outfit at a time.

Pathetic!!.......2005-09-14

This book is pathetic and very boring. There is no plot, whatsoever. Don't waste your time to read this book. I didn't even read the whole thing, because it was just too boring for words.

There are two basic strategies for coping with life in the desert. The first involves withstanding the extreme conditions using behavioural or physiological tactics. A testament to Feynman's gift........2006-01-30

Yes there is static and hissing and rude interruptions by the narrator announcing chapter sections, but you get to hear one of the worlds greatest physicists and perhaps the greatest physics teacher in his prime!

Once you get over the somewhat roguish Brooklyn accent, you start getting into the physics. I listened driving to and from work daily; without lecture notes, textbook or the visuals Feynman had available for the actual lectures. He is such a good instuctor that I was able to visualize the concepts he was discussing and actually came a way with a little bit of understanding of these complex principles. If I was in high school I would devote more time to these trenchant tropics and perhaps test my mettle in this difficult field of endeavor. For Feynman exudes such love of his field and curiosity for the mysteries of our universe (and human existance) that he fills one with motivation to join him in the quest.

Could be better, but I'm glad I got it.......2005-12-29

I'll admit it - I'm a total Feynman junkie. Since I own most of the published stuff out there by or about Feynman, I'm always looking for something new to add that isn't just a repackaging of what's already available. The nice thing about this collection is that it does not significantly overlap with the CDs that come with 6 Easy Pieces and 6 Not So Easy Pieces. Since Amazon and the Basic Books website don't list the lectures included in this set, here they are (volume and chapter from the complete lectures are in parentheses):

1. The Theory of Gravitation (vol. 1, chap. 7)
2. Curved Space (vol. II, chap. 42)
3. Electromagnetism (vol. 2, chap. 1)
4. Probability (vol. 1, chap. 6)
5. The Relation of Wave and Particle Viewpoints (vol. 1, chap. 39)
6. Superconductivity (vol. 3, chap. 21)

I have several complaints about this set:
- first, the audio quality is poor. One can do a direct comparison with the Gravitation lecture, which is included in this set and in the set 6 Easy Pieces, and the sound is much worse in this new set. Still, all the lectures are clearly audible.
- second, the lecture on probability is actually given by Matthew Sands and not Feynman. While I have nothing against Sands, like most potential buyers of this set I have the complete print Lectures on Physics, so I'm really buying these CDs to actually hear Feynman himself lecture. The lecture on probability is really fascinating, but the editors should have selected another chapter where Feynman actually did the speaking.
- Finally, they broke each lecture into the sections corresponding to the published chapters. While it is nice to have the lectures split into multiple tracks, it's irritating to hear the the narrator basically interrput Feynman almost in mid-sentence and say "section 1.3 ..."

In spite of the flaws, as a Feynman junkie I think it's a nice addition to my collection, and I would recommend it even if you own the CDs for 6 Easy Pieces and 6 Not So easy Pieces. But if you're choosing between getting this set or one of those two sets, don't go with this one.

The best of GBS.......2001-03-02

This should be required reading just for the "Don Juan in Hell" act of Man and Superman --an excerpt "Your friends are all the dullest dogs I know. They are not beautiful: they are only decorated. They are not clean: they are only shaved and starched. They are not dignified: they are only fashionably dressed. They are not educated: they are only college passmen. They are not religious: they are only pewrenters. They are not moral: they are only conventional. They are not virtuous: they are only cowardly...."

One of my science teachers recited this famous speech in the lab one day, just to show off, and I started appreciating Shaw. Funny thing is that of all the playwrights, GBS is the best just to read. Except for Pygmalion and maybe Arms and the Man, most of Shaw's plays are too "talky" to stage well, but read like short stories. If you haven't read them, you are in for a treat.

A Good Shaw Overview.......2000-05-23

This would be an excellent collection to have for anyone looking for a taste of Shaw's basic philosophies about socialism--and of course, a good way of finding out how his writing suits you.

Some thought provoking social statements are made in all four plays, though some of the prefaces might be more informative about the author than the plays themselves. Great witticisms and depsite the sometimes heavy philosophy, the reading is light and quick. The last play, Man And Superman, perhaps his most significant play in terms of philosophy, pure and simple, would be fun reading but the socialist's handbook given at the end would definitely not be everyone's cup of tea, unless they're philosophy students. This can be skipped without spoiling the play though, which contains some of the most excellent dialogue I've come across in a play with philosophical overtones.

All Oscar Wilde and Chesterton lovers would appreciate the epigrams and the witty one-liners. If for nothing else, Shaw is worth reading for his lovely style of execution, the flowing conversations and some uncanny insight.
