Book Description
Utilizing ethnographic and archaeological data and an updated paradigm derived from the best features of cultural ecology and ecological anthropology, this extensively illustrated book addresses over fifteen South American adaptive systems representing a broad cross section of band, village, chiefdom, and state societies throughout the continent over the past 13,000 years. Along the way, detailed presentations and critiques are made of a number of theories based on the South American data that have worldwide implications for our understanding of prehistoric and recent adaptive systems.

Customer Reviews:
A Real Treat!.......2004-09-15
Slime dribblers. Fruit bats. Grape grenades. Gummy toads. No, this is not a witch's school lunch menu. These are the deliciously creative names of candy in the board book Max's Halloween. As they make their rounds, Fairy Princess Ruby demands to hold the entire loot. But Max, dressed as a Fiery Dragon, is determined to trick his older sister. This time even the neighbors help him out (I won't reveal how!). My daughters, ages 4 years 8 months and 2 years 10 months, have never met a Max book they didn't like. This one is no exception.

Should have been an episode!.......1998-03-05
This book, more than all the others save "Frozen Stiff", should have been adapted as an episode of the show. The plot, with Alex trapped into going to Paradise Valley Chemical and facing threats to her secret from all sides, rings most true to the pacing and style of the television series. Unlike several stories in the AM book series, this one keeps a sense of plausibilty through its plot, setting, and use of characters. For example, when Bobby, Vince, Danielle all start to converge on Alex and her powers, the characters come together slowly and convincingly, not just thrown into the ending as a plot device. The way Alex, Ray and Annie plan around Vince and Danielle's latest plot to catch the GC-161 kid is in the grand tradition of episodes such as "The Video Tape," and "Operation Breakout."
An extra treat for the reader comes when Alex, Annie, and Ray takes him (albeit in written word) into the bowels of the plant's industrial section, an area never really shown on the show.
All in all, a good Alex Mack tale.

Book Description
The fourth volume of Advances in Antiviral Drug Design is keeping up with the recent progress made in the broad field of antiviral drug research and encompasses six specific directions that have opened new avenues for the treatment of HIV and other virus infections.
First, as the introductory chapter, the different new anti-HIV agents that are now in preclinical or clinical development are reviewed by E. De Clercq. This includes new NRTIs, NNRTIs and PIs, but also HIV entry/fusion inhibitors as well as integrase inhibitors, and some of these agents, such as the NRTI emtricitabine [(-)FTC] and the PI atazanavir, may soon be licensed for clinical use.
Second, high expectations are vested in the potential therapeutic usefulness of inhibitors of HIV integration, a point of no return in the life cycle of HIV, and this approach is highlighted by D.J. Hazuda and S.D. Young.
Third, as all currently available PIs can be described as "peptidomimetic", and, therefore, expected to demonstrate overlapping virus-drug resistance and side effect profiles, it would be interesting to see how a non-peptidic protease inhibitor such as tipranavir behaves, and this is covered by D. Mayers, K. Curry, V. Kohlbrenner and S. McCallister.
Fourth, neuraminidase inhibitors such as zanamivir (that has to be inhaled) and oseltamivir (that can be administered via the oral route) have gained a definitive status as antiviral drugs useful for both therapy and prophylaxis of influenza A and B virus infections; as they target a specific influenza viral enzyme, neuraminidase (or sialidase), they may be expected to block newly emerging influenza viruses as well, and the design of neuraminidase inhibitors has received due attention of H. Jin and C.U. Kim.
Fifth, while the major current efforts in antiviral drug development have shifted from herpesviruses towards HIV and hepatitis viruses [hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV)], it is interesting to note that by switching from the classical five-membered sugar or acyclic nucleoside strategy, J. Wang, M. Froeyen and P. Herdewijn have gone "upstream" in designing six-membered carbocyclic nucleosides as potential anti-herpesvirus agents.
Sixth, following up on the nucleotide prodrug strategy introduced above under ix, to deliver the biologically active nucleotides inside the cells, C. Meier has elaborated on a particular class of such pronucleotides, namely that of the cyclosaligenyl pronucleotides, an approach that should have far reaching implications for compounds effective against HIV, HBV and other viruses.
The six topics covered in this fourth volume of Advances in Antiviral Drug Design are in the front line of the present endeavors towards the design and development of new therapeutic agents for virus infections. They pertain to the combat against three of the most important viral pathogens of current times: HIV, HBV, influenza virus and herpesviruses.

Book Description
This text introduces the basic concepts of physics using examples of common occurrences. Beginning students will benefit from the large number of student aids and the reduced math content. Professors will appreciate the organization of the material and the wealth of pedagogical tools.
Customer Reviews:
Good conceptual physics text - better than Hewitt !!!.......2006-09-03
I have used this text to teach a conceptual physics course. We had been using the 10th edition of Hewitt. This text is shorter by some 13 chapters and gives students better than half a chance at getting through all the topics that should be covered in a 15-week semester course in introductory physics for non-science majors - including discussion of relativity and modern physics.
The convenient 8.5" x 11" format, and well done pictures and graphics make this text a "keeper" as a reference for introductory physics. (It might even make an interesting "coffee table" science reference.) Explanations and examples are clear and work well from the chapter content. Following end-of-chapter summaries, there are conceptual questions, exercises and "take home" experiments. Available online support is well done and easy to access. (However, the available PowerPoints are not done very well. They require a lot of editing or re-writing.)
Book Description
Long after their eradication from almost all parts of the US, wolves still evoke a primal response, firing the imagination with admiration, awe, and dread. Efforts to restore them to Yellowstone, North Carolina, and elsewhere have provoked heated public debate and met with only mixed success. Scientists and policymakers are debating the merits of returning the wolf to the northeastern US, where the forests of northern New England and upstate New York may provide the range and resources necessary to support them. This book brings together four thoughtful and literate observers of the natural world to reflect on the implications and potential of such an effort.
Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature, encourages a skeptical look at our own motivations in this restorative effort, even as he argues that the psychological and spiritual benefits to humans would be at least as great as the ecological benefits of restoration. John Theberge, a scientist with years of experience in tracking the Canadian wolf population, notes that issues of restoration and "return" are far more complex from a biological and ecological point of view than much of the debate would suggest. Kristin DeBoer, director of the wolf restoration project of the environmental group RESTORE: The North Woods, reviews the state of the political debates, while also offering a personal account of her own motivations and goals in this work. Finally, novelist and nature writer Rick Bass brings the experiences of his home state of Montana to bear on the debate in the northeast.
Customer Reviews:
Helping wolves.......2002-02-05
I believe this is a cause for restoration. This book made me believe that the wolf should be released in to the Adriondack mountians. It also had me believing that the ecosystem needs the wolves to survive. I was especially fascinated by Kristen Deboer's idea of creating corridors between parks in Canada ans the northeast, to help creat migratrion routes for animals. I believet he book itself aswell was ans informative, great, intertaining read.
Wol Restoration in the east.......2001-03-29
The Return of the Wolf is an eye-opener as it gives four very distinct and honest evaluations of the possibility of our northeastern forest communities welcoming the timber wolf back to it's native haunts. Let us not confuse the eastern coyote which has hybridized with the eastern wolf as the as the easts top canid predator.....The wolf, just as in Yellowstone and Minnesota is the true predator of the moose , Caribou Elk and Beaver. The coyote, even if hybridized with wolf genes is still not a large enough creature(maximum of 70 pounds whereas the true timber wolf can be 100-150 pounds)to bring down the northeasts growing moose population and hopefully one day a restored caribou herd. Let the voice of Rick Bass,Kristen DeBoer and Bill McKibben weigh heavy.......let us set aside the lands, educate the "Little Red Riding Hood" believers and politic effectively with the state house representatives who tend to buckle to the pressure of corporations who favor short term extraction versus long term sustainability. Give the wolves the chance to push the coyotes to their rightful "fringe" of the forest allowing the true timber wolf and restored(hopefully) Cougar to stand atop the food chain as top predators of the land. Our forests have returned after 400 years of being chopped and burned.Let us stop the shopping malls and second home developments from destroying our wonderful open lands.Let the land be restored to it's glory and allow the current residents of the backwoods to continue their sustainable forestry and wsoodcraft busines while reaping some benefits from a contrulled and managed Ecotourism. What a great thing for us to have the pomeans and will to return and restore our woodlands in the most populated part of the U.S. to their former majesty. We can be a model for the conservative western United States and the emerging 3rd world countries to emulate......The Return of the Wolf speaks of all of these things and more........Fantastic writing! Rivals Charles Little storytelling in the "Dying of the trees". Please pass on to a friend.......Let the restoration of the north woods begin!

The Invisible Revolution: Clay Aiken and the Fans Who Made Him a Star
ASIN: 0812974107
Release Date: 2005-11-29 |
Amazon.com
Clay Aiken, the undeniably talented American Idol runner up and self-proclaimed "nerdy, geeky, momma's boy" (and boy, does he love to talk about his momma), has written a strange hybrid of memoir, self-help and religious testimony--and in spite of it being so slight that it feels like it will float right out of your hands--he almost pulls it off. Learning to Sing is a book only his most rabid fans (and admittedly, there are millions of 'em) will be able to fully embrace. Anyone looking for American Idol dirt will have to go elsewhere, as Aiken always takes the high road, whether discussing his Idol experience (given surprisingly short shrift), the torment and damage done by the bullies of his youth, or his fractious, difficult relationship and ultimate estrangement from both his birth father and stepfather. When recounting the origin and progression of his true passion--teaching special needs children--his sincerity and dedication feels real and admirable. Towards the end of Learning to Sing, Aiken's writing teeters from subtly spiritual to zealously polemic, but surely there are worse things for young people (and some adults) to be exposed to than a wildly successful entertainer advising them to embrace their inner nerd, find and follow their passion and treat others with respect and kindness. We should all be so nerdy. --Terry Goodman
Book Description
“My mother prophesied years ago that my voice would take me places. She was certain that there was a reason I was able to sing. I am still discovering what that reason is, what it is that God wants to happen.”
–CLAY AIKEN, from Learning to Sing
When he was a kid singing in his church choir, Clay Aiken never dreamed of becoming a pop music star. His ambition was to be a teacher, maybe even a high school principal. But Clay’s mother was right, and the music that was Clay’s joy in life was destined to lead him to unexpected triumphs.
In Learning to Sing, Clay details what his astonishing success has meant to him. He writes from the heart about his life before and since his instant stardom on American Idol, how he has changed, and how he struggles to adapt to life in the public eye. He speaks candidly about his lonely childhood: the father who abandoned him, the school bullies who tormented him, the mother who taught him to be strong, and the friends and teachers who–more than they ever knew–kept him going. He describes his new high-profile life in Los Angeles– the awards shows, the free clothes, the unfortunate presence of avocado on all the food. More significant, he reveals what he has discovered from diving into the white-hot center of pop culture: what it takes for him to stay true to himself and remember the lessons he learned growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Clay shares his struggle to remain a man his mother can be proud of, and writes about the faith that sustains him today just as it did when he was an awkward, unpopular outsider. “I believe God has a direction for me. He did not give me this life just so I could buy a big house and an SUV. My job is to give back and to be a decent human being no matter how many people cheer my name.”
Clay’s friends–the old ones from North Carolina and the millions of new ones who love his voice–will hold this inspiring memoir as close to their hearts as they do his music. Learning to Sing reminds you that anything is possible. Like a perfect song, it will send your spirit soaring.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-07-07
This is a great book that actually is not about singing. It is about his life in NC and how he has made the hard times in his life into positive experiences. If you need a little inspiration or just want to know more about this amazing guy, read this book!
enjoyable.......2007-01-15
I enjoyed reading this book very much. It was written quite well and the large letters was easy to read.
A very well written book !!.......2007-01-09
I didn't watch American Idol, therefore, I had no idea who Clay Aiken was until I heard his singing on radio. I enjoyed his songs so much that I bought his CD. Recently, I learned about this book, decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. This is a biography that is very real and non-intimidating. Clay Aiken didn't have an easy childhood and yet he was able to recount it with such honesty and sense of humor. I also like the fact that although he is young, he is all serious about the importance of being a good person and making a difference. I have the CD version of this book, my 11 year-old daughter and I listened to it in the car and we both enjoy it tremendously. I highly recommend it.
At Times I Thought I Was Reading My Own Story.......2007-01-05
I never thought a book could bring me to tears like this one did. I was looking forward to reading it just curious about the man behind this wonderful voice. His story tells me that his past unfavorable experiences help balance the avalanche of love and adoration pouring out to him now. I think about how intense my feelings have become and then see footage of his Claymates and have to wonder if he becomes overwhelmed. Is there such a thing as too much love for one person?
The sad part is there will be those who are jealous of it and feel the need to trample on this deserved success. While reading this book you begin to feel Clay is right there in the room with you and certainly don't want the book to end because that means he's leaving. He is by no means invisible. If walking on water or running through fire would guarantee a weekend with Clay I would start practicing right now. That officially graduates me from Claymate to Claymaniac. I feel certain this is just the beginning for Clay and want to thank the cosmic forces that brought this soaring positively infectious spirit to our hearts. I try not to question the pure excitement, the euphoria, but just wallow in the wonderfulness of it all. If I wrote our fan fiction the title would be, `For However Long It Last.' Its times like this when it's good to be alive. Thank you Clay for not being afraid... to sing!
reality check.......2006-11-23
I supposed if I'd had known Clay at his youth, I'd probably think he was annoying. It kind of teaches you to give people the benefit of the doubt. Don't judge a book by its cover, basically. Get to know the person inside. For someone with a rough childhood he sure turned out pretty well. I'm sure having faith in God has alot to do with it. He's the kind of person everyone needs in their lives.

A must for reference or just a good read if you're inclined........2002-08-08
Having lived in Lincolnshire and experienced some of those derelict bommber bases along with a distance relative who perished as a Lancaster tail gunner, I had to know more! This book is an excellent reference manual taking the reader from the amateur beginnings of Bomber Barons ideals with the leaflet raids to the remorseless destruction of targets such as Dresden towards the end of the RAF Bomber Campaign in Europe. The book is split into 21 phases of the campaign based around either technical or strategic developments. Most raids are identified individually giving numbers despatched, losses and brief results/summaries. The introductions to the phases give good summary briefs of that particular stage of the campaign, be it Yalta or Window.
An interesting spin off from this book was with my Dutch father in law who was a 'guest' worker in Kassel on the night of 22/23 Oct '43. According to the family it was apparently the only time he had talked about his experiences when he discussed this raid in the book with me. Not a pleasant experience, he lost most of his friends on that night.
Otherwise this book is a definite requirement for the amateur historian or just the plain old hobbyist.
Book Description
Although the shell-shocked British soldier of World War I has been a favored subject in both fiction and nonfiction, focus has been on the stories of officers, and the history of the rank-and-file servicemen who were psychiatric casualties has never been told. This profoundly moving book recounts the poignant, sometimes ribald histories of this neglected group for the first time.
Peter Barham draws on reports from the front lines, case histories, personal letters, and war pensions files to trace the lives and fortunes of a large cast of ex-servicemen who suffered mental breakdowns. He describes their confinements to asylums, the reactions of families to their relatives’ plight, the turmoil of the soldiers when they returned home—and the uphill struggle they faced trying to secure justice from the bureaucratic labyrinth that was the Ministry of Pensions. His book gives a new perspective to the impact of the Great War and to current controversies about disputed postwar maladies.
Customer Reviews:
5 stars for subject matter; 4 stars for presentation.......2005-02-26
This is a heartbreaking book, in that the plight of the mentally wounded soldiers of WWI are revealed, and in realizing that so many could probably have been helped with today's therapies and drug treatments. Barham does an excellent job in uncovering the brutality (it's not too strong a word) of the "establishment" over the soldiers' disability pensions. There was no government assistance available to the in-home caregivers, and the mentality of the physicians and medical personnel of the time was extremely limited. Basically, severely shell-shocked soliders had no chance of recovery, given the limited medical understanding of the condition.
This is an important book. I could wish the writing was just a little looser; the author obviously has sympathy with the subject matter, and the detailed research can't be faulted, but there is something dry about the presentation. I still strongly recommend the book, and I think it can be useful & interesting to both the WWI "buff" and anyone interested in mental health topics.

Thorough and more.......2005-09-11
Previous reviewers have called this volume "thorough", "passonate", "eloquent", "inspiring", "useful", and "comprehensive". It is all those things, but it's also:
Funny!
For example, the description of Old Dad Mountain area states that "The Barnstow-Vegas dirt-bike race passes through the northern end of the area ... Soda Lake has obligingly swallowed several vehicles whole." There are unexpected one-liners like this throughout the book.
The indispensable guide to big wilderness`.......2003-06-24
Foreman and Wolke have compiled a thorough catalogue of big wilderness in the United States. More than just a catalogue, though, with typical passion, the authors state their case for expanding and interconnecting the wilderness we have left.
This book is for anyone who loves wilderness and wants not only to preserve what we have, but wants to see the expansion and rewilding of landscapes that can be salvaged.
Highly recommended.
excellent; the bible of wilderness description.......2000-12-24
I've had this book since 1992. In fact, I'm here browsing because I'm debating whether to get the 1998 edition. It is a very well-written, state-by-state description of the large wildernesses in the U.S. -- and the problems facing each. Excellent and eloquent descriptions of each area's topography, wildlife, flora, etc. provide inspiration and high-level overview for early stages of trip planning. National coverage expands usefulness as a reference. Get it!

This is good stuff.......1999-04-04
This book provides the reader a glimpse into the remaining wilderness areas in the west over 100,000 acres (& smaller ones in the east). It is comprehensive and provides details of the history of the US Forest Service's accomplishments and failures to protect wilderness on public land in this great country we call America.
