Product Description
As a mountain range, the Sutter Buttes of California stands apart, an island of upland in the great sea of lowland flanked by the Sierra Nevada and the Coast Ranges. Its softly rounded hills and angular pinnacles are cloaked in grasses, shrubs, and trees in patterns that reflect nature's design, not man's. Naturalist Walt Anderson provides an insiders view of this special mountain, telling stories with both insight and humor. The rocks, plants, animals, and the ecosystems they collectively form are given personal faces through Walts insights and unabashed humor. Humans are also a part of the natural history of this place, and their roles, from prehistoric to modern, are discussed.
Customer Reviews:
So Much More than a book on the Sutter Buttes.......2005-06-04
As a Professional Biologist I approached Walt Anderson's book with a critical eye to accuracy and detail. As a natural history student I approached his book with a curiosity about the Sutter Buttes, a place I have not yet visited (but now plan to).
In both instances I was thoroughly satisfied and excited by what I found. Clearly, Walt Anderson is a gifted writer and teacher. His subtle use of wit makes the reading most enjoyable. I felt as though the author and I might be standing on a hillside in the Buttes while he offered his observations, filtered through is obvious joy of knowing this special place.
His ability to introduce the natural history novice to advanced concepts and terms, while maintaining a sophistacted and scholarly treatment of the subject that will satisfy even the most critical naturalist, reflects his talent as a writer and teacher. In fact, I am now using his book as a resource for a book I am presently working on about another special place. Thanks Walt for the deep research and reporting.
Sure, this book is filled with fascinating facts about the Sutter Buttes, from its geological formation through minutia about the life histories of wild residents of the Buttes, but the book is much more than a dry treatise on the natural history of the Sutter Buttes. Rather, it is a journey through this special place in the natural world with a most talented guide. Don't miss this most complete and enjoyable tour from the perspective of one who truly knows this place.
One beautifully written natural history book.......2005-05-10
Jean Campbell's review of "Inland Island: The Sutter Buttes" is right on. This is an incredibly beautiful natural history book, both in its design and its text, and the drawings and color photographs are also marvelous!
Even the forwards (by David Cavagnaro and Craig Childs) are wonderful and informative.
I think this book will become the most-read natural history of The Buttes, but it is also in large part a natural history of much of northern California. I recommend it highly to all naturalists and environmentalists....it's a gem....
A Natural History with Passion.......2005-01-19
Inland Island: The Sutter Buttes is one of the best natural histories that I have seen for going beyond mere descriptions of parts (flora, fauna, and geography) and imparting a true sense of place. Without question, a sense of place requires a detailed description of all the parts for these are its building blocks. Walt Anderson catalogues these parts for the Sutter Buttes as well as can be found in any number of monographs of local natural histories. However, the parts are just the parts and its not until we become aware of their interactions through stories of living actions that a sense of how everything comes together to give a place its character begins to emerge. Here, Walt Anderson excels in giving us several stories such as Red Tail Hawks catching ground squirrels and Turkey Vultures pelting him with excrement as he lectures to a class. He does this with tongue-in-cheek humor and with the warm sentiment that conveys a deep and abiding passion for the whole of the place as well as for all its parts. I believe that a sense of place is primal in finding the deep satisfaction that can come from connecting with the natural world. Walt Anderson does this for us with uncommonly good writing and an obvious passion. His passion sets this book apart from others.

Excellent Resource.......2002-10-04
I enjoy looking at this book every fall to start thinking about the fast approaching ski season. It it well organized and has great statistical charts summarizing all the ski areas by state. I find it extremely helpful when planning a ski vacation to a new area. I'm using it once again this year for that purpose. I wish they would come out with an updated version. I know the ski areas have been expanding and upgrading their equipment. I would still reccomend this book, even being a few years old.

More than You Can Chew has been called a One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest for young adults.
Marty Black has retreated from a difficult family situation into the area she can best control, her own appetites. She may not be able to control her parents’ behavior, but she can decide what she will and will not eat. Eventually, she stops eating altogether. Marty is close to death when she finally asks for help and finds herself in a psychiatric institution. But recognizing her need for help is only the first tenuous step on a long road to recovery.
Marty’s ability to find a way to live, despite the powerful lure of anorexia, is the core of this fine, insightful novel.
Marnelle Tokio’s semi autobiographical story will resonate with every teenager who faces issues of family, body image, and self-confidence.
Customer Reviews:
Unrealistic..........2006-12-02
This book is not one of the best out about eating disorders. The main character of this book, Marty, is very unrealistic. When she enters a rehabilitation centor for her disorder, she makes alot of snide comments about everyone, and seems to know evertyhign about every eating disorder out there. I personally found this to be very unrealistic and it was insulting to the readers' intelligence to think that they would believe in such a character. (And I know people who've had eating disorders-- they dont' tend to be like that.)
Also, there are many gaping holes in the plot, or unneeded little tidbits that distract from the point of the book.
The writing of this book is unique in its metaphors, but it's too-in-your-face, and leaves the reader thinking "this was a good start. if edited better, it would have been even better."
However, something about this book makes you keep reading.
What would you do to stay alive?.......2006-04-24
This book is about a girl that is anorexic. It tells her life story of what all she had to go through. This book shows how important it is to eat and to not skip meals.
This girl doesn't like to eat. She has to leave her friends to go to this clinic her parents are making her go to, to help with her eating disorder. She really doesn't like it and the whole time she's there she complains about how all the food there is bad for her. She asked the people there what they would do to her if she didn't eat and they told her they would put a feeding tube inside of her and force her to eat. She meets a lot of new friends that are a lot like her, not wanting to eat, but she still doesn't like to go there. Her parents come and see her sometimes and they take her out to eat or just spend time with her. One day she did something that could change her life.
I would recommend this book to people that have eating disorders or something who wants to see what could happen if you stop eating. This book would be good for boys and girls to read.
I liked how it showed what could happen to you if you stop eating. I really didn't have any dislikes about the book. Overall I thought it was a pretty good book.
This naval will give you a reason not to giveup.......2005-06-15
this book is amazing!!! read this book, its awsome!!
this book is about a girl that has some family problems and thinks that the solution is to take it out on herself!! so she becom's anorexic!! OMG!! This is not the best way to go but at the end of all the hard work taht she had put up with at the rehad center for people with eating disorders, she got through it with a little help from her new friend Lilly. then she realizes that hating her parents was not the anger she had to express. READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!:):):)
The Best Book I Ever Read.......2005-06-11
Marnelle Tokio. More Than You Can Chew. Canada: Tundra Books, 2003. 234 pages.
The novel More Than You Can Chew was a wonderful story of a teen named Marty that struggles with anorexia. Marty ends up pulled out of high school and put into an eating disorder unit called Silver Lake. She goes there because she says "Dead girls don't graduate,". In the beginning she is not excepting the fact that she has to stay in a hospital with other girls. The book tells about her changes and relationships with the other girls in the unit. Also it takes you through the mind of an anorexic. You see her failures, her troubles, her obstacles, and her achievements. This book was outstanding and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a tear -jerker!
This Book Will Bring Tears To Your Eyes!!!.......2005-06-10
This Book is Amazing!!!!!!! This book is about a girl that goes through some personel issue's with her parents, and she thinks the best way to solve that problem is to become anorexic! then she goes to a rehab centre for people with eating disorder"s. Hilarious book, hours of fun........2003-03-11
This book really tickled my funny bone. With 365 different mixed-up cliches, there is truly something for everyone. It even makes a fun game to try to figure out which 2 (or three!) cliches are combined to make up the "wrongisms". Get one for you and another for a friend!

Book Description
Designed as an upper-level undergraduate/beginning graduate text and as a reference for research scientists, Modern Problems in Classical Electrodynamics addresses a wide range of topics in modern physics--including lasers and nonlinear optics--that are not found in other texts. The book begins with relativistic mechanics and field theory, partly because they lend unity and beauty to electrodynamics, and also because relativistic concepts appear frequently throughout the book. Electrostatics and magnetostatics, waves, continuous media, nonlinear optics, diffraction, and radiation by moving particles are then covered in depth. The book concludes by returning to basics, discussing the fundamental problems inherent in the classical theory of electrons. Modern Problems in Classical Electrodynamics features examples and homework exercises drawn from condensed-matter physics, particle physics, optics, and atomic physics. Many of these are experimentally oriented and help to make the book interesting and relevant to a broad audience. An instructor's manual including answers to the homework exercises is available to adopters. An accompanying website, http://www.physics.vanderbilt.edu/brau/book/Index.html, contains errata and additional homework exercises that instructors can use to supplement the exercises in the text.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing..........2006-04-30
The moment the professor in our class told us that instead of Jackson we'd be using another book I couldn't hide my joyous feelings. I ordered Brau's book (the recommended for our e&m course) and waited...
After living 3 months with this book all I have to say is how disappointed I feel. I thought it would be a really modern e&m book. In some aspects it is. The material it covers is pretty interesting. But the book has so many mistakes that get very frustrating. Keep in mind that at the back cover an errata webpage is referred (with several pages of corrections!). Trust me, you'll need it. Also, most of the problems are exactly the opposite of Jackson's - too easy, although I must say that I like the approach "Using A prove that B holds" - by knowing the result you can feel more confident when solving a problem.
In short, I read the book only when I HAD TO - meaning when we were assigned problems from it. I was oscillating between this and Jackson... Now I wish we had used the second all the way through...

Under the pen name Ahad Ha-'Am, Asher Ginzberg (1856-1927) became on the great advocates of cultural and spiritual Zionism. Essays deal with a great variety of subjects, but they are all concerned more or less directly with the theoretical and the practical problems of the Jewish people.
Book Description
1912. Writings from Asher Ginsberg who became the central figure in the movement for Cultural or Spiritual Zionism. Although raised in a Hasidic family, Ahad Ha'am was soon exposed to secular studies. The impact of modern philosophy and the sciences led him to abandon his religious faith and observance. Nonetheless he remained deeply committed to the Jewish people. It was his attempt to find a synthesis between Judaism and European philosophy. The essays included in this volume will give the reader an adequate idea of the author's attitude on Jewish questions.
