Description:
The concentrations of lead, zinc, copper and cadmium accumulated by 12 emergent-rooted wetland plant species including different populations of Leersia hexandra, Juncus effusus and Equisetum ramosisti were investigated in field conditions of China. The results showed that metal accumulation by wetland plants differed among species, populations and tissues. Populations grown in substrata with elevated metals contained significantly higher metals in plants. Metals accumulated by wetland plants were mostly distributed in root tissues, suggesting that an exclusion strategy for metal tolerance widely exists in them. That some species/populations could accumulate relatively high metal concentrations (far above the toxic concentration to plants) in their shoots indicates that internal detoxification metal tolerance mechanism(s) are also included. The factors affecting metal accumulation by wetland plants include metal concentrations, pH, and nutrient status in substrata. Mostly concentrations of Pb and Cu in both aboveground and underground tissues of the plants were significantly positively related to their total and/or DTPA-extractable fractions in substrata while negatively to soil N and P, respectively. The potential use of these wetland plants in phytoremediation is also discussed.

Book Description
Philadelphia, Quaker William Penn's "City of Brotherly Love" and the home of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, is known the world over as the birthplace of the United States.
Benjamin Franklin—famed diplomat, eccentric inventor, and publisher—was Philadelphia's postmaster as well as the founder of the renowned University of Pennsylvania. He was just one of the distinguished citizens who helped make the city the "Athens of America," which is the home of the Curtis Institute—one of America's premier music colleges—as well as such internationally celebrated cultural attractions as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Franklin Institute science museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The city also has many architectural landmarks including the massive Second Empire-style City Hall, which at the time of its completion in 1894 was the grandest and most expensive public building ever built.
Immigrants from Italy, Poland, and Russia have left and indelible stamp upon this once patrician city. Kensington was immortalized as Rocky's working-class neighborhood in the Rocky movies. South Philadelphia with its famed Italian market is also the home of the nation's best, yet least pretentious, Italian restaurants. Another humble culinary tradition is the city's delicious street food like "Philly cheesesteak" hoagies, hot pretzels, chestnuts, and tomato bread.
The inspired collaboration between esteemed photographer Carol M. Highsmith and writer Ted Landphair has produced and exceptional book of striking photos and insights that does justice to the city of Philadelphia and its people. Philadelphia: A Photographic Tour is a superb memento for anyone who has visited this great city, and a welcome gift for anyone longing to visit the City of Brotherly Love.
Customer Reviews:
Stunning Photography.......2000-12-10
It's about time somebody did a current, comprehensive travel book about Philadelphia. This city has always had historical attractions, but now it's bright and bustling and full of beauty that no book ever seems to capture. Until this one. The photographer, Ms. Highsmith, fills the book with some fabulous views, like the Museum of Art from the Schuylkill River, and some great shots of Franklin Park -- one of the nation's most spectacular but overlooked urban parks. There's "Billy Penn's" statue, of course, but with the fantastic backdrop of Philly's new skyscrapers. I loved the written introduction and the great old photos (including two delightful Mummers' Parade shots) that start the book; and the captions are truly informative. This is one of those rare coffee table books that you want to spend time reading, cover to cover, as well as enjoying the photographs. This is a winner.

Stotan: A cross between a Stoic and a Spartin
It's the last swimming season for Walker, Nortie, Lion, and Jeff, and their coach is building their self-discipline in a grueling four-hour-a-day test of stamina designed to bring them to the outer edge of their capabilities.
As it turns out, Stotan Week is also the week in which secrets are revealed, and the four friends must draw upon their new strengths for an endurance they never knew they'd need.
Customer Reviews:
Swimmers Bond.......2007-02-26
This book is about four high school seniors who are members of their swim team. Their swim coach has challenged them to use their vacation week to do some heavy training--to become stotans. These four swimmers are up for the challenge. They stay for the week in one of the members' apartments--Lion's parents and brother recently died in an accident, so he lives by himself and is able to host his three friends for the week.
Over the course of these five days of grueling training, these four guys come to really know each other, and we as readers get a glimpse into their lives and the things they each have had to survive.
The characters are great. They are nice and clever and dedicated and just all-around interesting. The whole idea of stotan training and what is done with it is really cool. I'm not sure how I felt about the twist to the story, though.
Great for targeting young , especially male readers.......2006-09-25
This is one book you may actually get some tough, too cool, high school kids to read. It's quite well-written and realistic, dealing with some hard-hitting issues in an engaging manner. Highly recommended.
Timeless insights about friendship and life.......2006-06-12
I bought this book when I was still in high school, read it, then forgot all about it. I liked the story well enough, because it was about swimming. But years later while I was at university, I pulled this book out again and realized that there was much more to this story than swimming -- that, in fact, if there ever was a course on friendship, this book could be a primer. This is a Young Adults book, but even now that I'm out of university, I still like to read Stotan! once in a while to remind myself of what really matters in life.
Love, Friendship, and Perseverance.......2005-05-27
Stotan by the magnificent Chris Crutcher is a story about a group of friends who are aiming to win state in the 4 X 100 meter relay. Yet on the way they must concure their minds and bodies in order to succeed. Walker Dupree the captain of the swim team must decide between the beautiful Devnee and the girl next door Elaine, while Nortie must deal with his problem at home. Lion is forced to cope with loneliness after the loss of his family and Jeff needs to overtake life's greatest terror.
Once Max introduced Stotan Week the plot begins to unfold and Stotan! becomes almost impossible to put down. Ideal for teens interested in learning about friendship, perseverance, love and even death. What is Stotan Week? Check it out at your local library and find out!
Stotan!.......2005-05-27
The book Stotan! by Chris Crutcher, is aimed toward young adults. The book is about four high school students who are on the swim team together. Their coach, Max, has them go through a rigorous week of training known as Stotan week, which will push them to the edge of their physical capabilities. But being a Stotan becomes more than just being a tough swimmer. A Stotan is a cross between a Stoic and a Spartan, and he shows no pain. During the Stotan week, Max says that everyone at on time will have to face "the dragon" at some point in the season. For the main character, Walker, his dragon is to go to make top twelve at state, and to break up with his girlfriend which is very difficult for him to do. Max says that you cannot take the dragon head on, but you must go with it, and then you can beat it. As the book progresses, each character meets their own dragon, which will bring about their innermost Stotan, and the dragon becomes more than just swimming. They face aspects of their inner Stotan which they thought that they would never have to do.
Stotan! is full of enjoyable and realistic characters. There is humor and sadness in every corner of the book. The book will leave you inspired, and ready to take on the "dragon".

This book rocks.......2002-10-28
Im a senior in high school, and I LOVED this book. It was an excellent depiction of what high school is really like to certain people, and represented teenage views very well. It was fairly easy reading, with everyday language. I'm not one for reading, but after I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, not just high schoolers. It was a very well written, enjoyable book.
Stotan!.......2002-10-28
Stotan! is a very uplifting story of high school swimmers who battle through adversary. The book focuses on a bond of four swimmers and friends that come to meet tragedy and prejudice. The story itself is very straight forward with little diction and figurative language, but has strong detail and imagery. The main plot of the story is interesting and the book is fairly short, so I would recommend it to someone who does not want to dive into a 600 page novel. Overall Stotan! is a feel good story that shines light on triumph and courage but does not have deep philosophical meaning.

I like the books that have the more city setting with real people that are suffering from the hard ships of life. I like teen books that have some violence and a little bit of mystery. I would like to tell people that this book is good for young teens maybe have school rivalry and are on the swim team.

Book Description

Book Description
This monograph re-evaluates the potential carcinogenic hazards to humans from exposure to inorganic and organic lead compounds. Human exposure comes from lead-contaminated air, dust, soil, water and food and through inhalation and ingestion. Recent human exposure has arisen predominantly from the widespread use of leaded gasoline. Occupations in which the highest potential exposure to lead exists include mining, primary and secondary smelting, production of lead-acid batteries, pigment production, construction and demolition. In spite of the persistence of lead in the environment, exposures have decreased substantially in countries where lead control measures have been implemented over the past 10-30 years.

Customer Reviews:
Becoming Scientifically Literate in Today's World.......2006-03-20
I am reading the book in conjunction with The Teaching Company's "The Joy of Science," which is presented by the Professor Hazen. The purpose of both is give you a background in the sciences-Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Biology-to make you scientifically literate for today's technical world. This sounds impossible because of the scope of the task. However through clear writing, examples found in the everyday world and excllent illustrations they achieve their goal.
The book is geared for a nontechnical person. It is not designed to prepare someone to be a scientist or engineer. Thus the authors keep the mathematics to a minimum. The book is very readable. As a result of the book I now understand the basics of relativity and genetics. Both are areas I had trouble before.
Textbook review.......2005-10-04
Got here kind of slow but the sender apologized in advance. Could be in better shape but you cant expect perfection now can you?
Good intentions with conceptual problems.......2004-09-14
The book covers a lot of subjects with the intention of providing a basic aproach to science. There are, however, conceptual mistakes or lack of precise characterization of important concepts. For instance, it confuses heat with internal energy ( not heat as energy in transit). Also it does not defines mass adequatetly as a measure of inertia, which may cause confusion when one studies relativity. These were problems detected at first sight. The book needs a revision. I suggest to by, through Amazon, "Integrated Science", by Tillery, Enger and Roos, from Mc Graw Hill, to get a general view of fundamental science with a more clear, and rigorous definition of terms.
Great for non-Science major.......2000-02-20
As a business major, satisfying a Science requirement, I have found this book to be informative, interesting and great fun. I believe it to be will written and thorough. Information is wonderfully balanced by illustrations, fyi's and interesting supplemental facts. I have one significant complaint to register with the authors/publishers of this text. The review and discussion questions should be answered either at the end of the book or in the review book. It is extremely disappointing that these answers are not available. As a student with a 3.86 average, I take my education very seriously and find it discouraging and somewhat insulting that I can not check my own work. I would STRONGLY suggest that those answers are made available within the text or on web. Thanks!
Book Description
'Heart of Darkness,' which appeared at the very beginning of our century, 'was a Cassandra cry announcing the end of Victorian Europe, on the verge of transforming itself into the Europe of violence,' wrote the critic Czeslaw Milosz.
Originally published in 1902, Heart of Darkness remains one of this century's most enduring--and harrowing--works of fiction. Written several years after Conrad's grueling sojourn in the Belgian Congo, the novel tells the story of Marlow, a seaman who undertakes his own journey into the African jungle to find the tormented white trader Kurtz. Rich in irony and spellbinding prose, Heart of Darkness is a complex meditation on colonialism, evil, and the thin line between civilization and barbarity. This edition contains selections from Conrad's Congo Diary of 1890--the first notes, in effect, for the novel which was composed at the end of that decade.
Virginia Woolf wrote of Conrad, 'His books are full of moments of vision. They light up a whole character in a flash. . . . He could not write badly, one feels, to save his life.'

Customer Reviews:
Excellent edition of classic novel.......2007-05-22
Published in 1899, Joseph Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS is like a fingerpost for its time, pointing the way of human preoccupations as they probed the final frontiers left in the world to discover, both geographically and intrapersonally, equipped only with a 19th century worldview. Where fear and discomfort with the unknown had once been associated with leaving land and heading into the open sea, Conrad now placed it in turning inward, turning from the sea up a river that penetrates an unknown land.
This is the story related one night to a group of London dwellers gathered on a dock boat in the safety and familiarity of the Thames. The speaker, a garrulous veteran seaman named Marlow, remembers how as a younger man he had pushed for the adventurous assignment of taking a steamboat up the Congo in search of a company's missing agent, Kurtz. His is a tale of horror, of what can happen to a person disengaged from civilization as it is known. This is an atmospheric exploration of knowledge, experience, innocence and morality. Conrad's language is complex but not opaque, has action but also a lot of description. As Virginia Woolf once said, Conrad could not write badly to save his own life.
That his vision requires rooting the horror in a hostile jungle culture and its customs can present a problem for a contemporary audience. The Modern Library has done a good job in introducing this edition with notable criticism, positive and negative, excerpted from across the 20th century, including pieces by Mencken, Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster and, more recently, Chinua Achebe. This edition also includes passages from Conrad's 1890 journal when he was traveling in the Congo. Several different publishers are publishing this novel, but this edition is the best I found.
Worth every moment.......2005-04-25
I've re-read this I know not how many times, but it truly remains one of my favorite "classics." This journey through the Congo (and, in turn, through the protagonist's mind) is not only well written, but it truly draws the reader into the delusional stages of consciousness. It is worth every moment.
Inside the heart of darkness...........2002-04-20
Heart of Darkness is a novel focused with strong imagery and the concepts of darkness and light as "darkness" is the heart of man while the "light" can be civilization as a whole. I found this book somewhat discriminating in the beginning but as a whole it has a very clear statement. I can see how it is one of the greatest novels but to me Marlow, the main character, has no character as he becomes obsessed with Kurtz and can instantly become him but does not. After finding what he is looking for, Marlow is still filled with the darkness. Even though I thought this book was somewhat interesting, I would not recommend it because I did not agree with Marlow's or maybe even Conrad's view of the Congo jungle and life in it with the darkness.
Heart of Darkness.......2001-02-21
Conrad is among the most influential writers of our time, and his masterwork Heart of Darkness proves this. The concepts introduced in this book laid the groudwork for a new outlook on humanity, and his predictions to modern society, specifically the business world, are unparalleled. Read this book and it will give you a new view on the world.
REALITY INTO FICTION.......2000-11-07
Joseph Conrad is NOT for everyone! So many people have had their attention-span shortened by MTV, Television and the Disney version of the TITANIC (hint... the boat doesn't sink and everybody erupts in a unrecorded song from MARY POPPINS), that people have forgotten how great it is to read a well written book with piercing insite, memorable characters, and a haunting theme. The skill of the true wordsmith has thanklessly fallen by the wayside, evidenced by the fact that Stephen King is considered a literary genius (see H.P. Lovecraft for a true genius in both word and plot). If we were to turn off the electronics and allow our pure powers of imagination to work, then Conrad would be abundant treat to our senses. All of his books are fantastic, but HEART OF DARKNESS holds a special fascination for most people who read it. Not to digress, but the Turner Production of "Heart of Darkness" with Tim Roth is very good and I have always loved "Apocolypse Now" (saw it 15 times in the theater). The story is a journey of the soul, as much as it is pure adventure. It is a wake-up call for those who have forgotten what it is to care and become aware of how their lives move forward (and sometimes don't). The setting of a forgotten Africa, wedged and pierced by European superpowers is both mysterious and frightening. We see this now-lost land through the eyes of a naive man, not grounded nor necessarily wise in the ways of the world. The opening reference of the French warship bombarding the forrested coasts shows the overall blindness of the countries who seek to reap the wealth of the land's bounty... throwing artillery shells onto the coast and cannot see if they are hitting anything! The river and its trading stations connect the European desire for money and profit and the harsh reality of the Africa they cannot explain. The mission is to reach the elusive Kurtz, a brilliant mind and man who has been silenced. Now the Naive agent seeks the worldly-wise man who Africa has driven mad! What I loved about the journey is Conrad's ability to chronicle not only the countryside but the people who are drawn into this lust for ivory and money. In this case, the journey is the deal. What this edition gives us is a wonderful addition... Conrad's real-life experiences as the short-lived captain of a steam boat in the Congo. At the time, Conrad considered himself more of a sailor than a novelist, and his notations reflect the factual and relatively dull specifics of his duties. Still, one gets an acute sense of how his mind works and (later) how he turned these terse, and unexciting notes into possibly one of the greatest short stories in the history of the English Language. HEART OF DARKNESS can be a matter of patience. It does not move quickly, in places, but if one slows down and allows the story to stimulate, and inform, then it is time well spent! There is time for video stimulation (TV, VHS, etc) and there is time to find an overstuffed chair and allow the best film maker ever made, your own mind, to transport you to a place long burned away by commercial interests and "progress". Take the journey and let your soul speak back to you afterwards!
