    Book Description

La Selva, a nature reserve and field station in Costa Rica, is one of
the most intensively studied and best-understood tropical field sites
in the world. For over thirty years, La Selva has been a major focus
of research on rainforest ecology, flora, and fauna. This volume
provides the first comprehensive review of this research, covering La
Selva's geographical history and physical setting, its plant and
animal life, and agricultural development and land use.

Drawing together a wealth of information never before available in a
single volume, La Selva offers a substantive treatment of the
ecology of a rainforest. Part 1 summarizes research on the physical
setting and environment of the rainforest, as well as the history of
the research station. Some chapters in this part focus on climate,
geomorphology, and aquatic systems, while others look at soils,
nutrient acquisition, and cycles of energy.

Part 2 synthesizes what is known about the plant community. It begins
with chapters on vegetation types and plant diversity, and also
explores plant demography, spatial patterns of trees, and the impact
of treefall gaps on forest structure and dynamics. Other chapters
address plant physiological ecology, as well as plant reproductive
    systems.

Part 3 covers the animal community, summarizing information on the six
best-known animal taxa of the region: fishes, amphibians, reptiles,
birds, mammals, and butterflies. This part includes an overview of
faunal studies at La Selva and a chapter on animal population biology,
which examines animal demography and abundance, and interactions
between predators and prey. Part 4 addresses interactions between
plants and animals and the effects of these interactions on species
    diversity.

Part 5 considers the impact of land use and agricultural development
on La Selva and other areas of Costa Rica. One chapter examines land
colonization and conservation in Sarapiqui, another covers subsistence
and commercial agricultural development in the Atlantic lowlands
region, and a third looks at the forest industry in northeastern Costa
Rica. This part also assesses the role and research priorities of La
    Selva.

La Selva provides an introduction to tropical ecology for
students and researchers at La Selva, a major source of comparative
information for biologists working in other tropical areas, and a
    valuable resource for conservationists.

5 out of 5 stars 16 Years Later, I Still LOVE This Book!.......2006-04-12

As a stubborn little girl, my parents struggled with my potty training for months. My attempts to defy them ended however, when they gave me this book. To this day, I remember the illustrations and am so thankful they found a method that actually worked! I'd definitely recommend this to any parent that thinks their child will never get the hang of it-- it's possible with Once Upon a Potty!

          5 out of 5 stars RESOLUTION.......2002-08-30

As we were going through the JOYS (smile) of potty training I think this book is what took us over the top. We tried many methods and many techniques and I bought this book as a reward because I knew my daughter loved books. I read this book 3 times when I first gave it to her and from the next week on it just clicked. The book just connected with her and she has been potty trained since.

5 out of 5 stars This book was an excellent potty training tool........1999-11-10

The brightly colored book with the imaginative story of a little girl learning to cope with her bodily functions was a tremendous aide in training my daughter. The simple language and pictorials were easily understood by a young mind and the positive reinforcement of the story was encouraging for her. This book made the task of explanation much easier. It became a favorite story book of hers!

          5 out of 5 stars A Cherished Classic.......1999-01-20

This is THE potty training book. It has it all, bright graphics, simple language, fun story, and an anatomically correct hero. I had this as a kid, and we enjoyed reading the kitchy little story even well after we were potty-trained. A must have for every toddler's shelf!

          4 out of 5 stars Haven't found a better potty-training book yet!.......1998-12-29

My son is attempting the potty-training hurdle and this book has been a great help! He can relate to the anatomy of the little boy. Seeing the steps he takes to finally achieve the ultimate goal is a big help. This book is a great tool to use. I use it as a guide in creating our own story, and let's face it, every child has there own version of potty training that is very unique to them.

            Book Description

I was the same girl who came to school last year. They were the same kids. But nothing was the same and I knew it. I had become the girl with a baby.

Jane has always been the good Williams. Her brothers might be high-school dropouts and rowdy late-night partiers, but not Jane. Jane never drinks, smokes dope, or misses a single day of school. She's in the drama club, gets top marks, and is one of the popular kids.

            Or she used to be.

Now she's one of those: the teenage mothers packing diaper bags with their knapsacks, wheeling strollers into the high-school daycare, tired and grumpy. Jane's only fourteen, younger than most of them, and she can feel the stares in the school halls.

She can hear the whispers on her whitebread street, too: Too bad, gone the way of her brothers, guess those Indians are all the same.

Jane isn't what she used to be--but then, maybe she's more. When the baby was being born, Jane's grandmother told her she came from a long line of strong mothers, and Jane is discovering it's true. Because of baby Destiny, Jane dares to demand the best, not just of herself, but of her whole family. This Jane accepts the consequences of her decisions, good and bad, and pushes through prejudices the former Jane just tiptoed around. This Jane is a strong link in something bigger than herself. She's a girl with a baby, two feet on the ground, one hand in the warm grasp of Teh and her Indian past, and the other holding firmly to the future.

If you are looking for a book that will encourage your child to help you out around the house, I highly recommend this title. It is basic and sweet, covering all the basics that Mommies do around the house and at the store with a toddler underfoot. I started reading this to my son when he was an infant and he is not 18 months old and all I have to say to him is, " Would you like to help Mommy do ..." and he gets a big smile on his face. It is subliminal parenting at it's best.

5 out of 5 stars Adoption: Investigation and Reflection.......2003-01-28

This book is an interesting story of a young woman's search for her birth parents, part handbook, part whodunit, part cliffhanger, but at all times comfortable and reassuring to all involved.

The author has a good relationship with her adoptive family, a great husband and three children of her own, but after 30 years, is still interested to know where she comes from, what her parents look like, even what nationality she is... she embarks very slowly on the long process to determine the truth.

There are missteps, dead ends and even the occasional minor success. There are fits and stops along the way. But through a combination of dogged perserverance and dumb luck, she is able to discover things about herself that she could not have known any other way.

This book is recommended for people interested in searching for a birth parent, it's recommended for potential adoptive parents, and it serves as a gentle reminder to the rest of us of the sometimes difficult circumstances surrounding adoption, and the positive effect it can have for all involved.

Plus it's an entertaining, exciting read! You won't be able to put it down.

4 out of 5 stars Moving account of one womans search for the truth.......2003-01-28

The true account of one womans search for her birth parents is recalled in this moving story. It outlines all the steps to persue finding your birth parents especially with a closed adoption. Including the doors that had to be unlocked and avenues that were taken. It is a touching tale of how determination and persistance can be rewarded and yet bitter sweet. This book would be helpful with anyone who is trying to do the same with continuous new ideas on how to go about finding your birth parents. It gives one a new perspective and hope.

I don't know about you, but I would hate to have green hair. Wouldn't you? Especially if it was cut like a poqupine! That's what happened to poor little Cassie Young in the book "Girl with the Green Hair", it was written by Janet Adele Blass. I guess Janet must have been a really good writer because I couldn't stop reading this book! I was really hooked on it. The book is about how a girl is jealous of her brother because he has smarts, looks, and talents. She wants to get some attention from her parents, so she joins the swimming team like her brother. Then, oh oh, the chlorine in the pool turns her hair green, and her best friend wants to make it look better so she cuts it, and it turns out like a porquipine.
You want to know what happens to her? Read the book! I think this book is a page turner because many people might also feel left out in their family. You can copy her solution to all this too! I really like this book! I do because it has a goodstory to it and it's funny. So if you like funny and story in your books, this one is for you!

5 out of 5 stars The girl with the Green Hair, by Janet Adele Bloss.......2006-06-14

The book I read was The Girl with the Green Hair. This book was about how a girl named Cassie feels jealous about her brother. She feels jealous about her brother because her parents #1 topic is about her brother and how many trophies he has recieved for being the best swimmer. So Cassie decides to join into a swimming team called The Aqua Bears. However after a couple of days something bad happens to Cassie. Her long blong hair becomes long green hair. The reason why her hair gets green is because she swims alot. So at the end she has to hide her problem from her parents but then they found out. They told her that all the things she had said were true, but they told them that they were going to change and they apologized.

Well I really liked this book because it wasn't that long. It was easy to understand the characters thought and their point of view. It got really interesting throughout the book. I recommend this book to people who like reading interesting books. I really enjoyed this book.

                      Book Description

Cinnamon and Cassia, the "Spices of Life", together constitute one of the most widely used group of spices. A comprehensive volume, Cinnamon and Cassia: Genus Cinnamomum explores in detail Srilankan cinnamon, Chinese cassia, Indonesian cassia, Indian cassia, camphor, and also the important related and useful spices of Cinnamomum. The introductory chapter depicts the history of these spices, followed by a detailed analysis of botany and crop improvement that examines taxonomy, morphology, embryology, reproduction, and propagation. A chapter on chemistry details the unique composition of cinnamon and cassia; it precedes an explanation of crop management, harvesting, and processing of Srilankan cinnamon. This book points out that Vietnamese and Chinese cassia are the same, with differences only in harvesting and processing. It also includes chapters on Indian and Indonesian varieties of cassia, along with overviews of the camphor tree, and coverage of cinnamon and cassia pharmacology, toxicology, end uses, economics, and marketing. The volume concludes with an informative chapter on other economically useful species of Cinnamomum. Written by a panel of experts from throughout Asia, this volume is the only comprehensive monograph on these spices, benefiting those engaged in study, cultivation, marketing, processing, and product development.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible for the Study of the hydrodynamics of high temperature, compressible fluids.......2006-10-09

This majisterial work by the famous Russian physicist/astrophysicist Yakov B. Zeldovich is the first and last book to refer to when studying the hydrodynamics of compressible fluids at high temperatures. The author's primary goal is to describe (as well as possible in a roughly 1000 page text) the physics, chemistry, and radiation diagnostics (i.e. radiative transfer) of a 20 kt thermonuclear explosion in the atmosphere. This book will be of use to a wide range of physicists and astrophysicists in other areas of research as well, though. The book begins with a (brief) discussion of the basics of the physics of shocks (and the hydrodynamics/thermodynamics of supersonic flow in general). More detailed topics include a detailed discussion of the ionization of the air (i.e. a change of adiabatic index from 7/5 to 5/3), the broad band spectrum of the explosion, and many others. Any absolute must have for any scientist studying compressible/supersonic flows.

                        5 out of 5 stars a treasure.......2006-02-25

This book is a true classic, written by the great Zel'dovich
a long time ago. Dover's two-volumes-in-one book new edition
provides an excellent opportunity to enrich every physics
                        library, private or institutional.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have It!.......2002-07-04

This rare gem presents theory, experiments, and applications in a comprehensive and accessible manner. This is a must-have for theorists and experimentalists: it brings theorists back to earth, and gives experimentalists scientific rigor.

5 out of 5 stars The definiative text on the subject.......2002-05-03

I am happy to see this outstanding text in print once again. This book is a must have for all who are interested in the subject of radiation-hydrodynamics.

5 out of 5 stars The best book EVER on high-temperature flows........2002-04-19

The republication by Dover Publications of this masterwork by Ya. B. Zel'dovich and Yu. P. Raizer will be welcomed by all workers dealing with high-temperature (radiating) flows. This book is a virtual "Bible" for studies of shocks and radiation fronts in high speed aeronautics, astronautics (re-entry), astrophysics, fireballs, shock tubes, and very intense explosions.

Zel'dovich was a physicist of extraordinary breadth of interests. The style of this book is to give heuristic explanations followed by rigorous analysis. It is insightful for both beginning students and researchers in the field. This book is an ABSOLUTE MUST for anyone working on the subjects listed above.

The Dover edition binds both original volumes as one, and is based on the very scarce second printing, in which most of the typographical errors in the first printing were corrected. All other errors noted over the years since the original edition went out of print have been collected and corrected in this version, which should be virtually error free.

I URGE anyone working in astrophysics and high-temperature flow physics to buy, read, enjoy, and be enlightened by this masterpiece.

                            Book Description

New editions of Elspeth Huxley's stirring account of her childhood in Kenya and her novel of the destructive forces of colonization.

Epic in its scale, Red Strangers spans four generations of a Kikuyu family in Africa and their relationship with European settlers, nicknamed "red" strangers because of their sunburns. Huxley's engrossing portrait of a Kenyan tribe and their way of life, with its rituals, its beliefs, its codes and its morality, shows Europeans and their customs in stark, unflattering contrast with the Kikuyu. The differences in their attitudes to war, methods of cultivation, the administering of justice, and the use of money are played out in this novel of the damaging forces of colonization.

With an Introduction by Richard Dawkins

                            5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Novel.......2007-04-28

This wonderful novel tells the story of the arrival of European settlers from the perspective of one clan of Kikuyu in Kenya. Brilliantly written, engaging, satisfying.

The first 40% of the book details the pre-contact life of the Kikuyu in great detail. It takes them through triumphs and tragedies and shows you much of their physical, social, and spiritual life. You get to know them well as well-drawn, interesting, individual characters. This sets the stage for the arrival of the "red strangers," sunburnt whites, and their baffling new "magics," laws, food, society. I've spent time in east Africa: the book rings true.

You become completely at home [well, maybe excepting the circumcision ceremonies ...] with the Kikuyu. You do get to feel [in a way] how strange and powerful the whites seemed. Great book.

One day in a small California barrio, a scary-looking stranger with an ugly scar on his face arrives. Silence falls on the streets. Normally raucous children stop playing, and their fearful mothers quickly beckon them inside. Everyone peeks out of windows and doors to watch the stranger walk down Main Street.

Later in the week, the stranger again appears in town. And a few days later, on a pleasant Sunday morning, the man shows his frightening face yet again. But this time, he's not alone. Cradled in the stranger's arms is a big, red rooster with a yellow ribbon tied around its neck. When the rooster sets off after a bug with the stranger hanging on to the ribbon "like a cowboy who had lassoed a wild bull," the townspeople are finally able to look past the long, ugly scar on the stranger's face.

Echoing the oral tradition common to so many Latinos, acclaimed author Victor Villaseñor shares with young readers one of his father's favorite stories. With vibrant illustrations by José Jara, this will soon become the favorite of many children aged 3 to 7.

                                2 out of 5 stars I give it a C-.......2007-04-03

This is about the history of whites (mainly europeans) in Kenya, the govoernment, settler farmers, adventurers etc. The reason for giving the book low marks is because it is too anecdotal, there must be hundrends if not thousands of names mentioned thus drowning the reader in minor details that are not continued on at any other place. Had I an easy way to return it, I would in minute.
