Book Description
During the last decades, landscape ecology has developed tremendously. It concerns both the theoretical basis and practical application. The authors follow a hierarchical approach that is inherent in landscape structures and processes as well as in planning practice. They show first approaches for the inclusion of factors of the landscape balance into planning procedures and new methods (GIS-coupled modeling, remote sensing) combined with more classical approaches from the basis of landscape assessment. Approaches for multicriterial landscape assessments are also presented. The overall target is to give recommendations for sustainable landuse and management. Each chapter concludes with a synthesis of the theme under discussion. Ideas concerning the state of the art are integrated as well as future trends in research. All methodological approaches are explained, with examples from differing regions.

Chocante!.......2003-09-08
Travelers Tales Guide of Brazil should be required reading for anyone applying for a Brazilian visa. The 50 travel essays capture the essence of Brazil. They're brief, mostly well-written, sometimes entertaining, and always revealing the people and culture of this dynamic country. I expected to find mostly stories about the Amazon and Rio; they're there as are so many other diverse places from Curitiba to Belem.
As an aficionado of Brazilian music, I particularly enjoyed the two articles by John Krich: Simply Irrisistible and The Guy from Ipanema. Alma Guillermoprieto gives great samba instructions for both men and women. And I learned about cachaca and capoeira, though both are fluid, one a drink and the other a beautiful martial arts performance.
It made my trip to Brazil more enjoyable.
Good Collection, but Uneven.......2002-08-23
The Travelers' Tales are just that - fifty stories mostly written by occasional or short-term visitors to Brazil. While it's often fun to tune in to their wonder and amazement at the things they discover, there are occasional disappointments. The stories range in quality from the very strong (Alma Guillermoprieto discussing evangelism, Bill McKibben on the orderly city of Curitiba, Alexander Shankland on Canudos); to the so-so (Downs Matthews on the nineteenth century flight of American confederate sympathizers to Brazil - a good topic but written in a silly sappy prose); to the downright unreadable (Christopher Hall on Candomble, Rachel C. Derrick searching for Africa in Salvador, John Krich on Ipanema, and Gilbert Phelps' pointless and themeless final chapter).
Predictably, most of the stories discuss Rio, the Amazon, and Salvador. Useful and colorful, no doubt, but the gems are those that get off these well-chronicled paths and surprise a reader with something really new. Like most travel-style writers, many here offer their own novice attempts at Portuguese words, often amusingly wrong, but earnest. Brazil is a vast, shocking, wonderful country. This book is fairly successful at presenting different facets and different perspectives. Perhaps it's not the only book you'd want to read if you were going to spend some time in Brazil, but it's among the handful that would help you understand the people and the place.
Back to Brazil.......2002-08-13
After returning home from a 10 day missions trip to Brazil I found myself scouring the book shelves for books on Brazilian culture and history. The stories captured in Travelers' Tales : Brazil, truly brought me right back to Brazil. Each tale awoke a memory, a scent, a feeling that could only be brought on by "saudade". I look forward to my next trip to this rich country armed with a book full of ideas for my next adventure.
So much more fun and interesting than a typical travel guide.......2000-01-27
I so enjoyed reading about the people and places of Brazil in this book. I am hooked on "Travelers' Tales" books now. I am excited to have a deeper knowledge now of the heart of this place in preparation for my trip there. The short story format is ideal for me and the variety of entries paints a colorful picture. Anyone traveling to Brazil should pick this up for before and after the trip.
An Interesting Mix of Perspectives.......1999-03-30
The book is unique in its wide range of viewpoints and subject matter. Interesting to see Brazil covered this way. I found it very helpful when I went to Brazil, along with the books "Lonely Planet: Brazil" and "The Brazilian Sound" (Temple University Press).
Book Description
Brazil is a land of superlatives. It has the biggest freshwater fish and the rivers to go with them, the world's largest jungle, and the greatest number of species. Travelers' Tales Brazil explores these aspects and much more, from Carnaval to the shamanic spiritual traditions, as well-known writers chronicle a land where commingling of cultures — indigenous tribes, West Africans, Portuguese colonists — has created a people who fearlessly embrace life.

"I, Nicole Maris, swear that I'm going to get serious about life. Really. I'm going to find a cause or a disease or something to devote myself to." So promises our young heroine--that is, just as soon as she secures an appropriate prom date. Nicole is a confirmed member of the (capital P) Popular crowd, and as such, just any old date won't do. She's got her heart set on hunky Brad Selden, but when he asks someone else she's left scrambling for an escort. Her next-door neighbor and childhood friend Chase--with his grungy look and class clown behavior--is hardly a ready candidate. But the ambitious Nicole is hell-bent on a successful makeover, as well as convincing the whole school they're a real couple.
Told in alternating chapters from Nicole's and Chase's points of view, this frog-to-prince tale of prom and popularity skips along at a rapid pace with funny, realistic dialogue and plenty of plot twists and turns. A secondary story line featuring Nicole's mom and Chase's dad adds depth to the lightweight romp, and also sets up the cliffhanger ending. Fans of Todd Strasser's witty work will also enjoy How I Changed My Life and How I Spent My Last Night on Earth, two more titillating titles about the students of Time Zone High. Becoming Popular.......2007-06-10
Nicole, a very popular senior at her high school, has a serious problem. She thought everything was all arranged for the prom, only to find out that the guy who was supposed to ask her ended up asking someone else instead. The tradition at her school is for each couple to walk a red carpet on their way into the prom, so parents can gather and take pictures and videos of them walking in. The most popular couples are always at the very back of the procession. With Brad at her side, Nicole would have been certain to be in one of the last four places in line. But without him, everything is a toss-up.
So Nicole decides that she will have her next-door neighbor, Chase, take her to the prom. Her only problem will be giving him a complete makeover in time to show everyone at school that he is good enough to be in one of those last places with her.
Chase, for his part, doesn't care much about popularity. He and his two best friends aren't popular but they aren't really bothered by that. He does like Nicole, though, and when the girl he really likes, Dulcie, decides to go to the prom with Brad, Chase is ready to accept Nicole's invitation. But will their plan to make Chase popular before the prom really work?
I liked the alternating points of view; it made it easier for me to understand the motivations of the two characters. I also liked that the end of the story didn't work out exactly as anyone had planned.
I didn't like that the situation with Ray worked itself out so easily. I also didn't like the conversations between Chase and his dad, in which his dad refused to admit he'd used drugs.
How I created my perfect prom date.......2007-04-21
Nicole was dying to get asked out by Brad. Who is one of the most popular guy in school. But when Brad asks out someone else, Nicole doesn't know what to do! That is when Nicole uses her last choice. Her long time friend and neighbor, Chase. Chase is not what Nicole wants as a prom date. So, Chase and Nicole's relationship is a lie and their school believes it. Problems soon occur and new relationships begin and end. I recommend this book to everyone because in was very interesting and funny.
Sweet and Funny.......2003-12-19
This book was a breezy, enjoyable look at high school popularity. Its very funny and really captures the trials and tribulations of navigating high school. The two main characters are both likeable and the other characters are also nicely drawn. It's a lot of fun to read!!
The Last Resort.......2003-01-03
This is a good John Hughes-ish novel. It's written well, practically perfect in a way that sounds so realistic that it's pretty eerie. Maybe not really eerie, but still. It's about love and make-overs.
In this story of star-crossed lovers, we meet the preppy Nicole who's popular, school-spirited and fashion friendly. Nicole is part of the elite clique at school, where everyone lives in nice houses and their parents are always out. Our other protaganist is the grungey Chase, who's antisocial, idealistic and angsty. Chase is part of a bored group of Ninetendo, computer-chatting buds who seem consist of a designated driver and a geeky idiot. They've been living next-door since they can remember but they aren't friends anymore, of course.
The story doesn't end here.
It all begins when Nicole is waiting for the ever-so popular jock, Brad Selden, to ask her to the prom. She waits by the phone, hints to him and flirts but nothing happens. She feels that all is hopeless until--BAM!--he finds someone else. And it happens to be Chase's ex-girlfriend, Dulcie. Of course, Nicole is thinking "What the H***?" while Chase is confused himself. Then Nicole gets an interesting idea--why doesn't she and Chase go?
Oh about no . . . says Chase. But Nicole gives him a complete American Eagle/Abecrombie make-over that sends Chase's army cargos out in the Dumpster. Soon Chase is a hot preppie, being Nicole's little puppet and soon her "love slave." But what happens when Nicole actually starts to LIKE Chase?
Hmm, the plot thickens. Typical teen story, eh? Well, too bad, because this was an amazing potrayel of modern teenage life filled with friendship, cliques, hopes, failures, and of course, love. Another Todd Strasser novel mixed with John Hughes's ideas.
A terrific read!!.......2001-08-29
Thank you Todd, for writing this extremely comical approach to a typical teenage dilemma! I'm surpised that it hasn't had more publicity, i recommend this novel to every teenager who isn't afraid to admit that they would love to be Nicole or Chase secretly. Read this book.

Book Description
Modesty, humor, compassion, and wisdom are the traits most evident in these personal papers, most of them never before published, from the Einstein archives. The illustrious physicist wrote as thoughtfully to an Ohio fifth-grader, distressed by her discovery that scientists classify humans as animals, as to a Colorado banker, who asked whether he believed in a personal God. Witty rhymes, and exchange about fine music with Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, and expressions of his devotion to Zionism are but some of the highlights found in this rare, warm enriching book.

Einstein, the Human side.......2007-02-13
It is so good now I want to buy his biography!
Einstein the mensch .......2005-06-26
Einstein's longtime secretary (1928-1955) Helen Dukas and Professor Banesh Hoffman who together had written a biography of Einstein here collect some of his correspondance, his very humane replies on a great variety of subjects.
The work is small but it does reveal Einstein's character. His humor and modesty and wisdom are everywhere in evidence. Einstein's writing often has an aphoristic quality, and there are many memorable sayings in the work.
A small sample of them follow:
" As for the search for truth ,I know from my own painful searching , with its many blind alleys, how hard it is to take a reliable step, be it ever so small, towards the understanding of that which is truly significant."
"With fame I become more and more stupid, which of course, is a very common phenomenon. There is far too great a disproportion between what one is, and what others think one is, or at least what they say they think one is.But one has to take it all with good humor"
"Where the world ceases to be the scene of our personal hopes and wishes, where we face it as free beings admiring, asking and observing, there we enter the realm of Art and Science. If what is seen and experienced is portrayed in the language of logic, we are engaged in science. If it is communicated through forms whose connections are not accessible to the conscious mind but recognized intuitively as meaningful ,then we are engaged in art.Common to both is the loving devotion to that which transcends personal concern and volition."
This volume touches upon many sides of Einstein, his humanitarianism, devotion to peace, his Zionism, his sense of the beauty that is to be revealed through the objective understanding of the universe."
The book takes the form of the questions his correspondents asked ( Most often given in paraphrased form by the authors of the book) and Einstein's responses to their questions.
If I had one question to ask him it would be, " How is it that it was given to one human being in one relatively short period of time to totally transform Mankind's understanding of nature? Why do you think that you were the one given this miraculous power?

Book Description
One of Edith Wharton’s few works of fiction that takes place outside of an urban, upper-class setting, Ethan Frome draws upon the bleak, barren landscape of rural New England. A poor farmer, Ethan finds himself stuck in a miserable marriage to Zeenie, a sickly, tyrannical woman, until he falls in love with her visiting cousin, the vivacious Mattie Silver. As Mattie is forced to leave his household, Frome steals one last afternoon with her—one that culminates in a ruinous sled ride with unspeakably tragic results.
Unhappily married herself,
Edith Wharton projected her dark views of love onto people far removed from her social class in Ethan Frome. Her sensitivity to natural beauty and human psychology, however, make this slim novel a convincing and compelling portrait of rural life. A powerful tale of passion and loss—and the wretched consequences thereof—Ethan Frome is one of American literatures great tragic love stories.
Also included in this volume are four of Edith Wharton’s finest short stories: “The Pretext,” “Afterward,” “The Legend,” and “Xingu.”
