Customer Reviews:
An excellent guide with exquisite watercolour illustrations........2000-04-20
Helene M. E. Schalkwijk-Barendsen's guide to the mushrooms of Northwest North America is an excellent introduction to this subject. Schalkwijk-Barendsen covers all the mushrooms one is likely to encounter in this region with both informative text and beautiful watercolour illustrations also painted by the author. Species are referenced by both common and Latin name making this book accessible to both the interested novice and the experienced mushroom enthusiast. This book should be a first-choice for anyone who love the outdoors, mushrooms and art.

Trip Down Memory Lane.......2006-08-26
This was a wonderful reminisience of my childhood in The Bronx from shopping at Alexander's, Loehman's and the Palace Movie theater. Even found Mayers Ice Cream Parlor on E 219th Street and White Plains Road where I used to get sundaes and the best egg creams made by Joe Brancato! Never found one better. And the piece I noticed was written by my St. Mary's grade schoolmate, Carlo Gambino!! Lots of great photos. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
In a city called New York ...
In a neighborhood called El Bronx ...
- The Fernandex children own a very special pet: A white hen named after their favorite Hollywood movie star.
- A new girl comes to school - a gypsy child who can read palms and foretell the future.
- A young boy must face the humiliation of wearing his uncle's orange roach-killer shoes to his high school graduation.
In the South Bronx - or El Bronx, as it's known to the people who live there - anything can happen. A migrant "fresh off the boat" from Puerto Rico can be somebody on the mainland, pursue the American Dream ... and maybe even make it come true.
Here are stories that capture the flavor and beat of El Bronx in its heyday, from 1946-1956.

Reviewer: Katherine Garcia.......2007-03-30
El Bronx is an exellent collection of short stories you will always remember. It all happened in a city called New York and in hood called The Bronx.
This book is full of 12 short stories. The first short story is about the Fernandezes. The Fernandezes are a family that have a special pet, a little hen named after their favorite movie star, Joncrofo. Mrs fernandez wants to kill the hen because the hen doesn't lay eggs. The second short story is about three kids who walk to school passing a funeral house. They always see a new person in the window display who had passed away. the days passed and something bad happened to a person that they loved so much. Another story is about a 15 year old girl who is pregnant. She had problems with her parents, she doesn't work and she can't go to school because she is pregnant. One day she meets a guy named Herman and she falls in love with him.
The rest of the stories are interesting too, because they have somethings that can happen in the real world. Some of the parts of the stories I don't like because it doesn't explain much of the sequence or events of the story. I recomend this book because it may help you to know something that you shouldn't do.I enjoyed it so much that I couln't stop reading it. I got interested in this book because some of the parts of the stories were funny. I loved this book and i hope you read it.
Good look at culture... but not for every audience.......2002-05-13
Although I agree that this portrays very moving look at the Bronx in a way that brings it to life for the outsider, this is NOT a book for the school market! It opens too many issues for moral controversy.
this book is beautiful!.......2001-12-10
Marvelously written, characters with flesh-and-blood aliveness, fantastic insights into people and culture and situations, very simply and clearly yet subtly written (with great sharp transitions - she doesn't waste your time!), and so emotionally connected - this book brought tears to my eyes several times...which is why I'm recommending it so highly. Most books can't pull that off.
And although at times it is an uplifting book, mostly it's really a sad book, a book about pain and heartache and people who can't fit it, who fall between the cracks, who are rejected by American society at large, and at times their own cultures and families. It so beautifully depicts people living compromised lives, yet living nonetheless and making the best of it. It offers a great entrance into a time and place that I don't often get much contact with. Thank you, Nicholasa (and I loved your book Nilda also)!
not just for young adults................2001-04-26
Even though this book is in the young adult section, I, a mature 23 year old read it and loved it. The short stories are well written and entertaining, and each story is different from the last. The book can be finished within a few hours, so its a great book for long car rides, days at the beach, or for those times when there's nothing good on T.V.
El Bronx.......2000-12-22
I really enjoyed this book. I read this book last year when I was in the 7th grade. And I am a boriqua too so I can relate a little to what the author is say. This book tells the truth about life in the Bronx and being a puerto rican

Book Description
This book offers a wide ranging and review of cutting edge developments along with tried and tested methods for isolation, resolution and quantification of inositol phospholipids and inositol polyphosphates in both cells and tissues. It includes detailed and rigorous methodology for identification of molecular species of inositol phospholipids, including their phosphates and glycans, with numerous examples of specific applications.
Wherever available, both chromatographic and mass spectrometric
evidence is presented for specific phospholipid involvement in the biochemical transformations accompanying metabolic signalling events and, where possible, controversies have been resolved on basis of analytical ambiguity. The review of the lipid
analyses extends to products of phosphatidylinositol kinases, phosphatases and lipases.
A general review chapter is included on metabolic signalling with special emphasis on the lipid products of 3-kinases. In view of the general lack of commercially available standards for inositol phospholipids and inositol phosphates, the book concludes with a chapter on the preparation and collection of chromatographic and mass spectrometric proof of their purity and identity.
This book complements recent books and reviews on the mechanisms metabolic signalling, receptor binding and the polypeptide structure of the proteins involved in the various signalling pathways. It also complements those texts that deal exclusively with the chemical synthesis of the phosphatidylinositols and their polyphosphates and glycans.

Book Description
Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is the most important example of a stimulated scattering process-light scattering that occurs when the intensity of the light field itself affects the propagating medium. A phenomenon that has been known of for some 35 years in solid state laser research, it has recently become relevant in the optical fiber industry, due to the increasing intensity required in optical fiber cores (and their long interaction lengths). SBS is one of the major limiting factors on the amount of power that can be transmitted via an optical fiber. This book describes the underlying physics of SBS, much of which are applicable to other fields of research, including, to some extent, plasma physics. It provides references to experimental details throughout. Later chapters investigate more advanced concepts and feature the problems faced by researchers using optical fibers.

Book Description
Fluctuations in scattered waves limit the performance of imaging and remote sensing systems that operate on all wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. To better understand these fluctuations, Modeling Fluctuations in Scattered Waves provides a practical guide to the phenomenology, mathematics, and simulation of non-Gaussian noise models and discusses how they can be used to characterize the statistics of scattered waves. Through their discussion of mathematical models, the authors demonstrate the development of new sensing techniques as well as offer intelligent choices that can be made for system analysis. Using experimental results and numerical simulation, the book illustrates the properties and applications of these models. The first two chapters introduce statistical tools and the properties of Gaussian noise, including results on phase statistics. The following chapters describe Gaussian processes and the random walk model, address multiple scattering effects and propagation through an extended medium, and explore scattering vector waves and polarization fluctuations. Finally, the authors examine the generation of random processes and the simulation of wave propagation. Although scattered wave fluctuations are sources of information, they can hinder the performance of imaging and remote sensing systems. By providing experimental data and numerical models, this volume aids you in evaluating and improving upon the performance of your own systems.

Female Beats wrote poetry, took drugs, went on the road, listened to jazz, and lived on the fringe just as the men did, but their accomplishments are not as widely recognized. This volume attempts to correct this oversight by profiling 40 women of the Beat generation and publishing samples of their work. Well-known poets Diane di Prima and Denise Levertov appear in the volume, along with the muses of male writers and other women who never became famous at all. As Brenda Knight notes in her introduction, counterculture women in the 1950s and 1960s faced difficult obstacles: "To be unmarried, a poet, an artist, to bear biracial children, to go on the road was doubly shocking for a woman, and social condemnation was high." The first portion of the anthology is devoted to women who were not Beats but who set the stage for the movement. Josephine Miles wrote poetry and mentored the younger Beat poets at Berkeley, while Madeline Gleason founded the San Francisco Poetry Festival. In the "Muses" section are short biographies of wives and girlfriends of famous male writers such as Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady. It's widely known that William S. Burroughs shot his wife Joan Vollmer Adams Burroughs; this book fills in other details of her wild and short life. Profiles of writers such as Joyce Johnson, Hettie Jones, Janna McClure, and Janine Pommy Vega account for the rest of the anthology. The lives these women led are as interesting as their writing, and Women of the Beat Generation honors their determination to live outside the mainstream. --Jill Marquis

Should not be missed.......2006-09-24
Any interested in the history of the beat era must have WOMEN OF THE BEAT GENERATION: THE WRITERS, ARTISTS AND MUSES AT THE HEART OF A REVOLUTION. Much has been written on famous beat men but comparatively little on the women who also made their mark during the time: long overdue but better late than never is an exploration of the histories of these women, from Barbara Guest and Diane DiPrima to Jan Kerouac and Anne Waldman. A literary and social history which should not be missed.

Women Writers Rule!.......2004-04-26
Yes, there were women writing as well, and doing all the other cool stuff at the time. Many of them are still writing or continued to write long after their affair with the "beat" generation. This book is a great introduction to these writers. It's very informative, has just enough of the good gossip and lots of really great writing.
Beautiful!.......2002-09-24
For a group that is now remembered as a progressive voice in the ultra-conformist wilderness of the 1950s, the Beats were a surprisingly chauvinistic bunch of guys, all too ordinary for their time. That unfortunate fact helps explain the relative obscurity of most of the women who ran with, influenced and, in some cases, loved them. (You probably know that William S. Burroughs accidentally murdered his common-law wife while playing William Tell, but do you know her name?) This wonderful volume goes a long way towards correcting that oversight. Featuring previously unpublished letters, rare pictures and - best of all - a generous sampling of creative works, it's a near-perfect survey of the Beats' female contemporaries, lovers and even a few of their precursors.
Although most of the women profiled here published at least one work in their own right at some point, many of those are not currently in print anywhere else. Additionally, some of the poems and stories here are previously unpublished, and in the case of many of the wives and lovers (referred to as "The Muses"), the works presented here are by far the most intimate look at their lives published thus far. In short, there's something here for everyone: a good starting point for newcomers to the Beats as well as a good supplementary piece for even the most serious students of women's literature.
Never enough Beat.......2002-06-16
This a good addition to the true beat fan's bookshelf. The histories of the women who took part in the beat movement and the excellent photos are worth the price alone. But you may find yourself surprised by the quality of some of the work. I ended up reading "Door Wide Open" by Joyce Johnson after finishing this book and enjoyed it immensely. The section on Denise Levertov is great as well.
The most enjoyable part of the book for me was the section on Elise Cowan. Cowan represents what Beat really is. She never produced a large, lasting amount of work, but she was a street soldier on the scene, down in the dirt, living the beat dream. Cowan was a lover to Allen Ginsberg, a friend to Joyce Johnson, a fling to Jack Kerouac, and a beautifully tragic figure of the time. If you want to dig deep in the beat and explore all of the characters, then invest in this book.
Excellent insight into the beat generation.......1999-03-24
This book is very interesting from both an historic and literary view. When I first started reading books from authors like Jack Kerouac and others, the Beat Generation seemed to be male dominated. But by reading this book one can see just how important the women really were. I recommend this book very much.
