Book Description
Big-Bang? Do you believe it? I don't. Being a career engineering-physicist, I always look for proof. For 50 years I have tried to prove the BB to myself. I have reviewed Slipher's red shift observation, reinterpreted it, and corrected Hubble's declaration, (the universe is not expanding and exploding to its death, instead, it is growing with vim and vigor). Red shift defines velocity, not acceleration or deceleration. So, I developed the New Universe Theory which is believable because it complies with known facts and the Laws of Physics.

What can we say! We don't think that there is a city that lends itself more to the hedonistic ethos. Fashion and style are in abundance, the hip bars and restauarants are home to Milanese fashionistas and international glitterati alike. Splash out on worldclass shopping in the quadrilatero d'oro (fashion's square mile and the equivalent of five Bond Streets); luxuriate in fashion designer spas. Then there's Da Vinci's Last Supper and opera at La Scala what else could you possibly need from a weekend.

A Must for Milan.......2006-02-05
I was sent this guidebook by a friend before visiting Milan for a long weekend. It is an excellent guide to the city. Milan is not the place to be seen gawping like a tourist. This discrete little black guidebook is just the ticket to getting to know the attractions and the nightlife as a local. It is a must for all who enjoy travelling without the aid of a backpack and enjoy getting to know the more subtle side to this fantastic city.
I liked it........2005-12-01
This is a marvellous book, The only guide you'll ever need.
Everywhere in Milan worth going to, staying at or seeing is in here and anywhere that isn't, isn't.
The photography is excellent, the writing is sublime.
You don't have to bother going to Milan anymore, just get this book instead.

Distraught over the death of a stray dog she's adopted, and worn out after a lost childhood spent deflecting jabs at her towering height and picking up after her alcoholic, unemployed father, 15-year-old Lucy ("the Giant") escapes from her Sitka, Alaska, home north to Kodiak, and temporarily reinvents herself as an adult. Lucy, now known as Barbara, winds up on a crabbing boat, with a motley crew that is destined to help her along the painful path to self-discovery.
Fast-paced and poignant, Sherri L. Smith's first young adult novel will appeal to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider in her or his own world. Readers will root for Lucy, never doubting that she will come out ahead... eventually. Her struggles--both physical and emotional--are authentic and beautifully portrayed. Smith's descriptions of the grueling yet rewarding work on the Bering Sea are vivid, and reflect nicely the inner work of her protagonist. We hope this is only the first of many novels from this gifted new author. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Lucy Otswego is a big girl who towers over just about everyone and everything in her small Alaskan town, except for her father’s horrible reputation as a mean drunk. At 15, she runs away from the cruel classmates who see her only as “the Giant,” the embarrassed adults who pity her, and the abusive father whose fleeting attentiveness is worse than his indifference. When the crew of a crabbing boat assumes she’s much older than she is and invites her to join them for the season, she thrills at the possibility of escaping her teenaged life. Buoyed by the camaraderie and support of her new shipmates, Lucy quickly masters the mind-numbing cold
and backbreaking work. But when her masquerade is threatened, she learns that there are no shortcuts to growing up.

Real-life issues and adventures.......2007-06-27
If you are a high school English teacher in search of a book for young adult readers, Lucy the Giant should be just the ticket. The novel deals with issues of self-image, family dysfunction, and loneliness in a forthright and engaging manner that teenagers can relate to and reflect upon. The author, Sherri Smith, keeps the pace moving and balances gritty descriptions of life on the Bering Sea with action and adventure steeped in reality. The storyline draws you in and never feels forced. Lucy the Giant is a person that most everybody can connect with on some level. I've taught this book to both inner city school kids in St. Louis as well as rural Colorado teens and found it worked equally well with both groups. I think this novel is an especially good choice if you have students who struggle to read a book from cover to cover.
a book of patience and motivation.......2006-07-12
lucy the giant was the kind of book that you really have to read strait through because once you put it down you dont have much motivation to finish it. if you have patience you might find the book interesting but if you dont i do not recomend reading it because it takes awhile to get into it and if u do get into it most likely you will be falling asleep agin by the next page.

Books like "Lucy The Giant".......2006-07-12
Books like "lucy the Giant" Barely any action. I mean Lucy the giant really has some action but me personally I do not like the book. It is not like other books I have read. That is basically why I disliked the book. I like drama, action, mystery, and that is about it. If you wanted to read the book again, then you absolutely different from myself. Well, the story is basically like real life. And I like a little more fantasy in a book. I guess that is all I can write and say.

When poor James Henry Trotter loses his parents in a horrible rhinoceros accident, he is forced to live with his two wicked aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. After three years he becomes "the saddest and loneliest boy you could find." Then one day, a wizened old man in a dark-green suit gives James a bag of magic crystals that promise to reverse his misery forever. When James accidentally spills the crystals on his aunts' withered peach tree, he sets the adventure in motion. From the old tree a single peach grows, and grows, and grows some more, until finally James climbs inside the giant fruit and rolls away from his despicable aunts to a whole new life. James befriends an assortment of hilarious characters, including Grasshopper, Earthworm, Miss Spider, and Centipede--each with his or her own song to sing. Roald Dahl's rich imagery and amusing characters ensure that parents will not tire of reading this classic aloud, which they will no doubt be called to do over and over again! With the addition of witty black and white pencil drawings by Lane Smith (of The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs fame), upon which the animation for the Disney movie was based, this classic, now in paperback, is bursting with renewed vigor. We'll just come right out and say it: James and the Giant Peach is one of the finest children's books ever written. (Ages 9 to 12)
Book Description
Roald Dahl's children's classic will be rediscovered with wonder and delight in this handsome gift edition with all-new black-and-white illustrations by Caldecott Honor Book artist Lane Smith (who also designed the characters for the Disney animated film). How James escapes from his miserable life with two nasty aunts and becomes a hero to his new insect family, including Miss Spider, the Old-Green-Grasshopper, the Centipede (with his 21 pairs of gorgeous boots), is Dahl-icious fantasy at its best"This newly-illustrated edition of an avowed children's favorite has all the makings of a classic match-up: Milne had Shepard, Carroll had Tenniel, and now Dahl has Smith...author and illustrator were made for each other, and it's of little consequence that it took almost 35 years for them to meet" --Kirkus.

Book review.......2007-09-10
Ever been in a giant flying peach? James and the giant peach by Roald Dahl tells about a boy who's parents get eaten by a giant rhino, goes to live with his evil aunts, then rolls away in a giant peach. To begin, His parents take him to the London Zoo when only to encounter a loose rhinoceros. The rhino eats James' parents to leave him on the streets. Then, he goes to live with his evil aunts, Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge. They treat him very badly and don't let him play with other kids. Finally, an old man comes and gives James some magic crystals. Then a giant peach grows, James crawls in the peach to find some unusually large insects. They then roll away in a giant peach in hope of finding a better place.

A fantastic interpretation.......2007-08-27
I bought this for my 5-year old son 3 weeks ago and we haven't stopped listening to it. Roald Dahl has a beautifully warped view of the world, with parents killed tragically, evil aunts and innocent, precocious children. James is a wonderful example. Jeremy Irons brings real range to the interpretation of the characters, so we all - parents and child - find ourselves chuckling as we drive and listen (and will do for a long time to come). A treat for children (and their sainted parents also).
The Best Book Ever.......2007-08-26
James and the Giant Peach is the best book I have ever read! It is about a boy named James whose parents were killed by a rhinoceros who escaped from the London Zoo. Because he no longer had parents, James was forced to live with his two aunts who were very mean to him.
One day when he was working, an old man gave James some magic green beans. If James swallowed the green beans, nothing bad would ever happen to him. James accidently dropped the green beans in the dirt and they disappeared into the earth.
There were eight beans and seven insects suddenly became very large after they ate the beans. James was wondering what happened to the eighth bean. It hit an old peach tree and a giant peach grew on the tree.
James and the insects became friends and they lived in the giant peach together for a day. They all realized that they had to escape from the James' horrible aunts. They cut the peach off the tree and it went rolling away with James and his friends. It rolled off a cliff and landed in the ocean.
After this point, James had many adventures inside the peach with his insect friends. They find a way to escape from sharks, they escape from "cloud men" who throw rocks at them, and finally, they make a way to land safely in busy New York City.
Enjoy all these exciting advenutres yourself by reading this great book!
James and the Giant Peach.......2007-05-26
James and the Giant Peach, by Roald Dahl
Have you ever wanted to fly in a giant peach with insects. The book I read was James bad a giant peach. This is about a rich kid with nice parents living next to kids in a beach. Until his parents get killed. So James has to maove with his two creepy aunts. The aunts are mean abd make James do all the chores. UntilOne day a guy gives James majic worms abd told James that they make things grow or grant a wish. So James tries to wish to bring his parents back so he could go home. But the worms escape and go into this little peach tree and it starts to grow. The next day he wakes up and sees the peach big and go's over there. He starts to make a hole and crawls inside and turns cartoonish and falls to see insects insideand become best friends.Jamesis on his way home NY. Here comes James and the Giant Peach. I like this book because it is adventures one. It was an easy book to connect to the characters. I understand how people feell and see things in the book. There were a lot of cliff hangers. I didn't like about this book is that it had no horror. If you like adventures book, then you should read this book.
a wonderful (occasionally dark) story and an AWESOME audiobook narration by Jeremy Irons.......2007-04-28
After James Henry Trotter is orphaned due to the whims of a hungry rhinoceros, he is sent to live with his horrible Aunts Sponge and Spiker and is miserable until a local peach grows to the size of the house and James sets off on a great journey.
This short book has delightful characterizations: the nasty aunts are REALLY nasty. The other characters are quirky and fun. Jeremy Irons' reading of the audiobook is exceptional. His delivery of Aunt Sponge (with the face that appears to have been boiled) is absolutely perfect.
I especially enjoyed catching glimpses of a couple of Dahl's later stories. When The Giant Peach rolls through one town, it breaks through the wall of a chocolate factory: chocolate fills the street and children frolic in it, "sucking it into their mouths in great greedy gulps," evocative of Augustus Gloop gorging himself in Willy Wonka's chocolate river in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which came out three years after James (1961 and 1964). And at the end of the story, a Chief of Police mistakes one of the characters for "a vermicious Knid"; the Knids return as the principal villains of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator over a decade later (1973).
If you're buying this for your kids, note that one character does use the word "ass" a couple of times (using it as an insult for another character), two people get run over by a giant peach (thump! thump!), and the book has two Very Nasty Adults. But not ALL the adults are nasty. And this world has some very nasty adults, so there you have it. Don't be an Aunt Sponge OR an Aunt Spiker.

Lavish vibrant illustrations for clever fairy tales.......2004-12-08
I remember this book very well from when I was a child. The biggest strength here is the illustrations. They completely cover every page. The only white on most pages is the whites of a characters eyes, the crest of a wave etc. (The text is cleverly laid out over sky, over a brick wall, over anyplace where not so much action is going on. These areas are smoothed out so that they are all the same color and then text is laid out there. It works well.) I would "read" this book before I could read.
The illustrations are realistic in style. They have bright colors and are beautifully printed. They are perfect for children. This would be a good book to get for a child who is very young and can't read yet because the pictures are so strong, and the child can grow to read.
Despite the title, this book is a collection of fairy tales and not a pseudo history about wizards and trolls. These stories tend to be humorous and not scary. My favorite concerns a hero's quest to get a magical potion. The potion will cure the wart on the princess' nose in time for her to attend a royal ball. He fails his quest and the princess attends the party with a beautiful fan in front of her face. Some of the stories here may be duplicates of stories already in your fairy tale collection:
Nils in the Forest (A Danish Story)
The Magic Book
Poet, Goblin and Donkey
The Giant and the Cobbler
A Pot of Gold
The Crystal Ball
Molly Whuppie
Pixie Visitors
Long Nose
French Puck
The Boastful Tailor
The Two Wizards
Snow-White and Rose-Red
Mother Holle
The illustrations in this book are very colorful and lavish. This is a perfect book for younger children who are just learning to read. The pictures are enough to entertain a child, and the writing is large print with simple language. The stories are charming and clever, but written for small children.
(If you do purchase this for a child, try to get a copy without a name written in the front. The opening page shows an old gypsy pointing to a label that says, "This book belongs to..." and a place for a child to write their name.)
(And by the way this review refers to the 1983 printing of this book, but I believe they are the same.)

Buy this book as a supplement to your textbook.......2004-07-23
Other than a few typos, this book is awesome. I learn the basic concepts from this book, and then do the problems in my textbook. This book has helped me when my professor couldn't/wouldn't. You cannot learn physics from this book only, but it is an excellent addition to any textbook.
Decent book - many errors.......2000-07-06
This book is a decent book for those being taking a freshman physics course for non-majors. This is a good supplement to a calculus based physics textbook.
typographical errors.......2000-03-08
it's a good book, it helped a great deal. I wish time was taken to correct typographical errors. I lost valuable time that could have been used to study.
Very helpful, recommend.......2000-01-17
this is a very good book except there are some mistakes(but the mistakes are easily found and corrected by yourself). This book gives you how to attack problems in a very organized manner even though the problems are not so difficult. I came to be able to solve more challenging problems in a different book after solving the easy but organized ones in this book. I recommend this book!
This Is The Book If You Need Help with Physics.......2000-01-17
Beginning with the "How To Use This Book" and "How To Excel in Your Physics Course", (especially the latter) and throughout its pages, this is, without a doubt in this readers opinion, the very best book on the subject I have found to date (And I have many). It puts you through the paces. If you want to know this subject and excel in it, these authors have placed before you the practice you will need. I recommend this book highly for your first experiences in this subject. Starting with the mathematical background required; then on to Classical through Special Relativity. It covers each and every topic, in a clear, concise method that enhances learning and improves retention greatly in each and every area. It's a great reference to have on the shelf. EXCELLENT! My thanks to the authors. Your book has helped me much more than I ever expected.
Book Description
Teaches problem-solving style by explaining the methods that experienced scientist and engineers use to define a problem, to solve it, and to present their solution to others.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2005-10-19
I found this book really useful for setting out a method and format for creating elegant, accurate solutions to college physics and chemistry problems. I took physics 10 years ago and am about to take another course as I prepare for vet school. This book increased my confidence level. What's more, I actually feel excited to start -- a minor miracle considering how much I had been dreading the course. (This book does not assume you will be taking calculus-based physics; it would work equally well for calculus- and algebra/trig-based courses.)
Helpful.......2000-06-21
This book is a very helpful resource when first learning how to solve basic physics and engineering problems. It offers a perspective that the class text or professor might not convey to the students.

Wonderful doorway into the world of Black Writers.......2004-06-17
I recently found myself searching for a book that would allow me to experience the works of black writers (especially female writers). This book was just that. It has small biographies on many writers (mostly female) and showed some examples of their work. It is a great key into the door I was trying to open. I am now not only more educated on who is who but also more empowered. I definitley recommend this book to anyone looking to become more educated in this genre.
