Customer Reviews:
Useful, but outdated.......2004-11-20
This book delivered less than I expected. Its chief flaws are that it is outdated, superficial and poorly organized. It begins with highly detailed advice about basic tools that outdoorsmen should always carry: knives, compasses, etc. This is welcome information, but the author put the cart before the horse by introducing this material first. What was needed was a general discussion of the challenges of wilderness survival and the basic methods needed to overcome it. Without this overview, how can the reader prepare a proper shopping list? And regarding the author's proposed shopping list, few of the specific tools he mentions are still available. So the author's list of compasses and survival knives is nearly useless. The same type of problem is illustrated by the author's strong recommendation that every outdoorsman should carry a "dog rag", because it has so many uses. But this term and the cloth it refers to are now obsolete. In fact, I was unable to find a single reference to "dog rags" when I performed an internet search. There may be a few old timers who still use this term, but that's the point: it's now obsolete! Many other sections of the book also seem outdated or superficial. For example, although the section about snares will help the reader understand their general nature, it doesn't provide enough detail so that he could actually build one that will work properly. Despite these problems, I found this book somewhat helpful. It's short and easy to read, and it provides many useful ideas about basic issues such as finding food and shelter. But the overall impression left by this book is that it is merely an expanded magazine article rather than a thoughtful and thorough discussion of methods that can save a hiker's life during a wilderness emergency. On balance, I'm disappointed that this very good author produced such a light weight book on this important topic.
This book lives up to its title........2003-09-20
Most of the survival books I've read focus on living like an aborigine, which is not what the average backpacker needs. I wanted a book that would tell me what I needed to take in the woods with me to prevent troubles from happening in the first place, and tell me how to get out of trouble if something went wrong. This book is ideal for civlian backpackers and campers who want serious advice about surviving in a real world survival situation.
A poor written attempt at survival (with a fancy hardcover).......2003-09-16
Anyone who gave this book 5 stars has no idea what a good book on the subject should contain. This is a poor attempt at written survival manual at it's best. The beginning starts out with the author recommending survival knives. What about if you don't have one? then what? Your survival knife will be there where you don't need it(this is from experience of many). While other books teach you how to use natural resources for cutting tools and shelter, this guy recommends the latest high-tech compasses, navigaton equipment and blah blah... Maybe there's some marketing trick in the survival world that I don't know about. Hard to say but whoever ends up in a survival situation without all the fancy modern tools, best luck to ya! I will say though that it has a decent info on building natural shelters but just about every other author has covered it and done way better. Don't expect to learn alot here. Just the basic stuff that you probably already know. This book should be titled "Practical Camping" and should cost half the money too, even then I'd opt for a refund.
The original civilian survival manual........2003-02-22
I often kayak alone on remote lakes, and before I found Practical Outdoor Survival I was always afraid that I might be forced aground by foul weather in a place that was too far from my truck to reach on foot. This book makes that prospect a lot less frightening. Not only does it contain great information about which emergency items I should pack, it tells me how to pack them, and how to use them effectively. I own a number of good wilderness survival manuals, but this is the one I take with me when my life might depend on the advice I get from a book.
PRACTICAL OUTDOOR SURVIVAL hits the mark........1999-09-25
Thanks to Lyons Press for publishing Len McDougall's PRACTICAL OUTDOOR SURVIVAL. Thumbing through other books on living in the outdoors, I find many of them interesting and useful on the topic of surviving a calamity in the wilderness, but this book hits the mark by being both thoroughgoing and compact. If you could pass this on to Mr. McDougall I would appreciate it.

Book Description
Tokyo, 1890. Toyo is caught up in the competitive world of boarding school, and must prove himself to make the team in a new sport called besuboru. But he grieves for his uncle, a samurai who sacrificed himself for his beliefs, at a time when most of Japan is eager to shed ancient traditions. It's only when his father decides to teach him the way of the samurai that Toyo grows to better understand his uncle and father. And to his surprise, the warrior training guides him to excel at baseball, a sport his father despises as yet another modern Western menace.
At its heart a novel about a boy who loves baseball, Samurai Shortstop is fascinating, suspenseful, and intense. Expertly researched by debut author Alan Gratz, it's a sports story and more, about a boy who must choose between two ways of life, but finds a way to bridge them.
Customer Reviews:
Congrats, Alan Gratz!.......2007-10-04
This is a story of a boy named Toyo Shimada. The time is set in Tokyo, 1890. Toyo is sent to a boarding school of a very high caliber, but after he arrives he sees how the upperclassmen treat the first years. To fit in, he joins the baseball team, a sport he loves. He wants to be shortstop, but until he becomes a "man" to the upperclassmen he is stuck in the outfield. He is enraged, but nevertheless he pushes through the tormenting and refuses to quit the baseball team. The only problem is his father, who is still using the ways of the samurai, or worrier. Toyo's father does not want him to play, unless Toyo can convince him otherwise. Other than that, his father has decided to teach him the ways of the warrior, or bushido. At first Toyo does not understand any of his bushido lessons, or why he has to do them, but over the course of the book he learns to use his bushido skills.
This book reminds me of a book called Dairy Queen. The story was about a girl, and football, not baseball, but in the end she overcomes many obstacles just like Toyo. In both books, the main focus is overcoming anything that comes your way. They are both also about standing up to important figures in there lives. It happens to be that in both books that person is their dad. Alan Gratz has written an enthralling tale.
I enjoyed the book, although it does have some pretty gruesome scenes. I liked reading it because you always want to see what Toyo will do next, what the other characters are going to say, or do. It also tells you a lot about what school was like back then, in Japan. It is a lot different from Americans school, and the year it takes place in really makes a difference. Overall, this is a great book and you should pick it up sometimes if you are looking for a great read.
Burning Besuboru!!.......2007-03-01
Samurai Shortstop is about a 16-year old Japanese boy, Toyo. Right from the first sentence of the book it really grabs your attention. Toyo's uncle is preparing to commit sepukku. This is considered an honorable way to kill yourself in Japan. The story draws you into the life of Toyo and helps you to understand his relationship with his father and learning the art of bushido. He goes off to a private boarding school where he learns how to stand up for himself and fight off the seniors who are out to torture the first years. I liked this book because it combines the sport of baseball along with Toyo's high school experience in Japan. If you want to read a book that is hard to put down and will keep you intrigued until the very last page, then this is the book for you.
Japan proves pleasant backdrop for charming baseball story.......2007-01-09
Samurai Shortstop proved to be a most pleasant read over the summer. Now, I am a 20 year old college student who most likely should be reading Dostevesky. Instead of that, this past summer I had the pleasure of reading Alan Gratz's fantastic work. It is a solid attempt at bridging young Americans with young Japanese, all through the medium of baseball and middle school/high school. I am not well versed in Japanese culture, but from what I have read and seen in film, this book gets it right. I would go so far as to say it is an accurate histrography of the time in the broader strokes.
This book has a fair share of action, both in the form of the baseball games and the hazing rituals of late 19th century Japan. It should be noted to the parents of younger readers that these scenes are not too violent, but do convey a sense of the horror involved. It might serve parents well to have their children read the Author's note at the end of the book before the preceeding pages.
I can not speak highly enough of this book. My copy met with an unfortunate accident with a bottle of water at college, so I will soon be ordering a new copy for my bookcase!
I am currently seeking a track in Education on the High School level and must certainly say that this book will be on my reading lists for first year/second year students.
It's a hit!.......2006-09-19
Due to Alan Gratz's magnificent SAMURAI SHORTSTOP, I went to sleep long after my bedtime. I couldn't stop reading! This intriguing book mesmerized me. I lost all sense of time. I was engrossed in turn-of-the-century Japan.
In this book, readers will experience cultural differences between modern day and life in 1890 (in Japan) where samurai ways had recently been abolished, yet readers may be surprised to discover cultural similarities, too. This is a fascinating story about baseball, friendship, loyalty, fear, courage, and a father/son relationship.
Toyo and his friends will beckon me to visit with them
again and again as I long to read more of their story. I wish there were a sequel!

A Thought provoking page turner.......2006-08-26
Books that attract and hold the interest of boys are rare and in high demand. Alan Gratz's book, Samurai Shortstop, will do both. In his first 5 pages of text, the stage is set for this powerful, thought provoking YA novel. With well-chosen words Mr. Gratz promotes understanding of cultural differences in a fascinating, well-researched manner without once digressing from the thrill of his page-turning story.
Introducing understanding of an ancient Japanese life-style into the hearts and minds of twenty-first century multi-cultural readers, then integrating its highest principles with a modern-day western sport, represents a formidable task which Alan Gratz has accomplished admirably.
While this book will certainly hold the interest of male readers, any reader will appreciate this excellent, well written story.

Book Description
No other book on the market today can match the success of Halliday, Resnick and Walker's Fundamentals of Physics! In a breezy, easy-to-understand style the book offers a solid understanding of fundamental physics concepts, and helps readers apply this conceptual understanding to quantitative problem solving.
Customer Reviews:
NOT a beginner's book.......2005-10-04
The first physics course I've ever taken used this very textbook. If you are about to be in the same boat as I was, let me tell you this: this is NOT a good introductory physics text. If you're not one of the kids who took AP Physics in high school, you will probably struggle with this book unless you have a very amazing professor.
Most of the formulas are given as "this is the general formula, and here's how we derive the other formulas from this". There's very little explanation involved with concepts, and when the author tries they are extremely hazy. This book apparently assumes that you've learned every concept before, and that you only need a brief overview and a table of formulas.
Not to completely bash this book - far from it. Formulas are listed in an organized and comprehensive fashion, and useful derivations are given also. If I need to look up a physics formula, this is the book I use as it's actually faster than sifting through Google. Beware, though, if this is your first endeavour into the world of physics.
What a Struggle.......2005-03-20
I'm using this book for a distance learning course in physics. I suspect it was not written for distance learning. I often find it hard to relate the answers to chapter problems to the explanations in the text. I also have a copy of Cutnell & Johnson's Physics 6th edition. The thinking in the latter is a lot easier to follow.
pretty good, beginners may need extra help with it.......2004-08-20
i'm using this book as a main source for preparing for the physics GRE exam, and i'm finding that it is getting me up to speed for the exam. my previous academic background is actually math/german/finance, but i can tell you that the math background is what makes working with this book fairly successful. i'm pretty much a sucker for big, pretty books anyway, but i really can tell that this one is definitely helping me learn basic physics- fairly good examples, lots of problems, and interesting introductions to each chapter to captivate your attention and motivate you to continue studying. if you're a freshman taking using this book for a course, i would suggest you consult your professor regularly and get help whenever something is not quite clear- it's probably a royal pain in the neck to take physics I/II and calc concurrently, so i can totally understand those of you without the complete math background having trouble with this material- i know i did 20 years ago as an undergrad, and it made me really dislike physics at that time. i don't know what calc classes are like these days, but i would strongly recommend at least 3 semesters of calculus before embarking on a course that uses this book- it'll make your learning experience much more intense, and you'll get a lot more from the book and will be able to appreciate it much more. Oh, and you may just want to try and order the international edition from abroad (Europe, for example)- it's about $100 less than the U.S. price and still has the same content!
Highly overrated.......2004-07-04
Alright, so of course this is the book required by just about every college in the country these days in their introductory physics courses---well, it shouldn't be. The authors certainly provide mathematical motivation for the concepts they cover, but certainly don't give adequate real-world motivation for concepts. Oh yeah, so, as one idiot reviewer who thinks he's some kind of precocious student said, this book helped him and his high school buddies get fives on the AP Test---WELL BIG DEAL IDIOT!!! GOOD FOR YOU!! I only managed to do that in my freshman year of highschool so I guess it must be really hard or something--*cough* Well, in the real world of people who actually know anything about physics or math or any field, getting a five on the AP exam in highschool isn't anything special. Basically, this book will prepare you to pass exams and standardized tests--it won't give you understanding. For that, go somewhere worthwhile---for example, the Feynman Lectures on Physics, all three volumes of which cost about half as much as Halliday and Resnick's book.
is this a money-making gimmick or what?.......2004-05-07
Our physics department decided to switch to this book last year, and I have been trying to figure out which edition to buy.. "extended enhanced problem edition", "extended", "enhanced"? How about throwing in a student's companion text that contains "chapter extensions?"? What about getting the right Solutions manual? only 30% of the solutions are in it? And now I just found out they have published (another?) new 7th edition which no doubt will have a brand new array of essential supplements and extensions. Why all these editions and supplements?
