Customer Reviews:
Scotland the Best! The ONLY book you need..........2003-06-20
This book is a must for the Scottish visitor. I bought 5 books including Frommers driving tours (never touched it) and eyewitness guide (nice pictures, but we never used it). It was the only book we used. The book is outlined in several ways, either you can pick by the area you are, or certain interests. Either way, this is a book written by a Scot, and he knows the area very well. He covers everything from best waterfalls and scenery to best pubs, and the things you shouldn't miss. We felt like we had a guide with us the whole time telling us where to go for the best Scotland has to offer, and everything he said was right on! We found so many places off the beaten path, that as a tourist we never would have found on our own. This book is also very amusing and unbiased, as the author has a keen sense of humor and I found myself laughing several times at his honest approach. I believe this makes all of the difference when you want to have a good traveling experience. I would recommend this book to anyone who is going to Scotland, and also the Michelin map was extremely helpful. It got us everywhere without a problem!
The Only One I Took Out Of The Suitcase.......2003-04-11
AS a well-prepared traveller, I spend WAY too much money on books and then have to cart them around the whole time. This time, I bought five books on Scotland and Edinburgh. As we travelled for five days, I noticed the book I continuously had out was Scotland the Best! At one stop at one of the "bloody good pubs" by Glencoe, we sat at a table next to Morag and Ian, both Scottish, married 35 years. They saw our book, grinned, and pulled out their own. They said they used it every weekend and kept it in the glovebox. How much more of a recommendation do you need? Buy this book and all the updates!
Mind expanding addition.......2003-03-24
Once you have a solid book on Scotland, (Fodors, Eyewitness, etc), then this book will bring more life and excitment to your base of knowledge. The authors pick what/where they like best in certain categories, and you will find places not listed in the main tourist books but worth going for if your travels take you near the vicinity. The "best of" topics are such things as graveyards; churches; castles; historical places; waterfalls; coastal villages; shops; beaches; golf courses; glens; and so forth, along with more information in detial on Glasgow and Edinburgh. Told with honesty and a sense of humour, is good for tourists and natives as well. 300 pages of great information, well worth it.
The True Scotland.......2001-04-22
If you are going to Scotland, forget all the other travel books and buy "Scotland The Best." My family and I used it exclusively on two long trips to Scotland, mostly spent wandering around the Highlands and Western Isles. Irvine's book definitely has a point of view, which makes it entertaining reading. Most importantly, the reviews and recommendations are spot on. We found several places to eat, sleep and shop which no other book mentioned. And after you have visited Scotland, this is a great book to pour through as you plan your return visit (because you will go back!).
Funny, unconventional, and TRUE!.......1998-09-02
This book is a big hit with visitors and Scottish residents alike. Although the format is unconventional (lists of the best of X, where X ranges from upmarket hotels to spooky graveyards), it can be used to guide the tourist to the best that Scotland can offer. On the other hand, as a 'local', I've found it opened my eyes to places and things I might never have noticed on my own. And the witty commentary prevents the lists becoming too much like, well, lists....
The reviews of places to stay and eat are very accurate - I've had a lot of fun eating out in Edinburgh and elsewhere to check out the recommendations!
Only negative point - I find the map references irritating to interpret - the map section could be formatted and printed more clearly.

Mastering Perl for Bioinformatics
ASIN: 0521600820 |
Book Description
Essential Bioinformatics is a concise yet comprehensive textbook of bioinformatics, which provides a broad introduction to the entire field. Written specifically for a life science audience, the basics of bioinformatics are explained, followed by discussions of the state-of-the-art computational tools available to solve biological research problems. All key areas of bioinformatics are covered including biological databases, sequence alignment, genes and promoter prediction, molecular phylogenetics, structural bioinformatics, genomics and proteomics. The book emphasizes how computational methods work and compares the strengths and weaknesses of different methods. This balanced yet easily accessible text will be invaluable to students who do not have sophisticated computational backgrounds. Technical details of computational algorithms are explained with a minimum use of mathematical formulae; graphical illustrations are used in their place to aid understanding. The effective synthesis of existing literature as well as in-depth and up-to-date coverage of all key topics in bioinformatics make this an ideal textbook for all bioinformatics courses taken by life science students and for researchers wishing to develop their knowledge of bioinformatics to facilitate their own research.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for beginners.......2007-01-06
The book is written in an easy and concise way. It is a very useful book for beginners. If the reader knows the basics, he needs a more advanced book.
Essential Bioinformatics for Life Scientists........2006-08-20
This compact, economical book (at least for bioinformatics) covers the usual basics of bioinformatics (Databases, alignments, phylogeny, gene prediction, structure prediction, transcriptome analysis, proteome analysis) but is unique in its approach. Recognizing most life scientists need to understand basic bioinformatis, but lack extensive mathematical modeling, computer command line or programming experience Jin Xiong has written a text that describes common bioinformatics tools to perform each of the above studies. Using diagrams and figures in lieu of complex mathematical formulas, Xiong explains how the tools work. Each task in bioinformatics has many comoputing tools - the strengths and weaknesses of each, and guidance in critical evaluation of the output are explained. There are capstone problems at the end of the book that are extremely helpful in enhancing understanding of the tools. The text is easy to read.
In the preface. Xiong describes that the book is a compilation of notes from several years of teaching bioinformatics. Therefore they presumably have been revised based on student review. However, this is a first edition - there are a lot of typos, misspellings, and some figures have errors. Hopefully these will be fixed for this is a fine introductory book.
The text is for those new to bioinformatics. Unlike many bioinformatics books, there is no coverage of programming (PERL or SQL for ex,). Therefore, those who are already skilled in this area will likely not find this particularly useful. Familiarity with the UNIX operating system will help readers do the problems.
Good Introductory Book for the Student or Researcher.......2006-04-17
The author gives a pretty good summary of this book in the preface: 'I needed a text that was comprehensive enough to cover all major aspects in the field [bioinformatics], technical enough for a college level course, and sufficiently up to date to include most current algorithms while at the same time being logical and easy to understand... The book is aimed at graduate and undergraduate students in biology, or any practicing molecular biologise, who has no background in computer algorithms but wishes to understand the fundamental principles of bioinformatics and use this knowledge to tackle his or her own research problems.'
The book was developed over several years, first being issued in the form of Xerox'd lecture notes to test the acceptability by students. Subsequently the notes were revised, expanded and now assembled into book form.
There are now a large number of standard software packages designed for use in the bioinformatics area. Many of these are discussed. However, it is not intended for this book to be a manual on these packages. Instead it discusses the software from a standpoint of when and where specific packages can be used to solve your problem of the moment.
As a field, bioinformatics is expanding and developing at an extremely rapid rate. This book is up to date as of early 2006.

A step above grade school.......2007-07-31
I believe I learned physics in high school where
the formulas for gravity and force were simplistic
compared to physics for the utterly confused.
I believe the utterly confused series helps in all
aspects of the major.
Thank you,
Steven Gokey
Still confused.......2007-06-10
I think it is a great book for the older child or even adult who already has a basic working knowledge of physics and mathematics. The 13 year old beginner (such as my son, for whom it was bought) may not benefit substantially from this book, as I believe it assumes an existing knowledge of physics. The text could have included more explanations (in words), and examples of common problems to be solved.
I haven"t receive yet the book. .......2007-02-22
When I receive the book I will be able to sent my opinion.
Uhm....Duh.............2005-05-27
I used this book along with my textbook, and it helped a lot. It presented the key points to focus on so when you go to class you have a better grasp on the concept. You cannot use it as a textbook because not all the problems you may have to work on is presented. Overall, it was an easy read and very clearly presented so you can follow the steps to the solution of a problem. I used it thru third semester physics. Good luck!
So you are confused?.......2001-11-18
So you are confused eh? You want to get more confused than you already are? Do you want to mess up on your physics test and get the information more messed up then it already is? If you do, then please go right ahead. I bought this book and found it to have a reverse affect.

A Tour of One of America's Literary Capitals.......2004-01-23
I've never been to Chicago, but my wife has. And on her last trip there she picked this book up for me. At first I barely glanced at it, but then one night I was looking for something to read and began to scan through it. I finally put it down several hours later, amzed at how engrossed I had become.
I did not realize how many well known authors had roots or connections to Chicago. The information is concise and has just enough detail for anyone interested in a who's who of Chicago literature, as well as the bookstores to hit when you're there.
Who knows, maybe someday I'll finally get there and really put this book to use.
Unique, user friendly, and a "must".......2001-06-08
Literary Chicago: A Book Lover's Tour Of The Windy City was designed specifically for bibliophiles in need of a fun and lively guidebook to the homes, haunts, and neighborhoods of Chicago's impressive literary figures ranging from Ernest Hemingway, Gwendolyn Brooks, David Mamet, and Carl Sandburg, to Ben Hecht, Mike Royko, Studs Terkel, Edna Ferber, and Saul Bellow. Literary Chicago is unique, user friendly, and a "must" for locals and out-of-towners wanting to explore Chicago's heritage of writers, journalists, poets, editors, publishers, and bookstores.

Excellent Resource.......2003-08-31
This book was the text for class I took on Paul's letters. Very readable with very insightful essays on each of the letters. Excellent background on the life and times of Paul. A must for anyone who wants to study or teach on Paul's letters.
Read 'the letters' first!.......2001-06-08
The Letters of Paul was written by a retired professor of Religious Studies at Macalester College. His former teaching career is evident when reading this book, although he admits in the preface it is written for the "nonspecialist." (ix) I got the sense that this book, first published in 1975 (ix), was a textbook for students. Roetzel himself describes it as a book for "those who are systematically reading Paul's letters for the first time as well as those returning to Paul for a fresh look." (xi) He says that the book is meant to be read before looking at Paul's actual letters, a point I disagree on; at least a perfunctory reading of the letters would be helpful before reading this book. Roetzel's aim is to have readers see the letters "less as repositories of static truth than as lively and sometimes turbulent exchanges over the nature of the gospel," (xi) and to "help the novice reader read the letters in light of their social and cultural background." (5) He is also trying to guide students in how they approach the study of Paul, and to help them understand basic structural and functional aspects of letters in Paul's time (xi).
Roetzel opens the introduction skillfully, drawing the reader in with a discussion of Paul's views on women. He then touches on some other controversial contemporary issues. Roetzel presents other dichotomous views of Paul. These "contrary impressions" (1) effectively tease the reader, and hint at the issues to be dealt with in the book.
The book concludes well by picking up where the introduction left off. It discusses controversial issues in a little more detail, but they make more sense now because of the background of the book. I especially enjoyed the last few pages as they provided an excellent, concise summary of Paul, and put him into perspective. Particularly the conclusion notes, that "...he raised hard questions that the church had to face. And he dealt with real issues most of which still lie near the heart of humankind." (190)
Roetzel was excellent at fulfilling his aims. He made me understand that Paul's letters are not static, but real conversations between Paul and the churches. The book also helped me to understand the world through Paul's eyes, which were focused on "the cross, the resurrection, and Jesus' imminent return." (72)
There are few negative things to say about this book. A couple of minor contentions I had were the use of theological words, and the black and white presentation of the material. First, Roetzel tossed theological words into the book several times, often without proper explanation (e.g. "eucharistic" 63, "exegesis" 39, and "doxology," 70) This would not be a problem if Roetzel was writing for the specialist, but if as he claims, his audience is composed of non-specialists, the use of theological words can lead to confusion.
One other minor criticism: Roetzel made many assumptions that he treated as undisputed truth. For example he writes, "we know, of course, that Paul is unfaithful here to the original intent of the Genesis material." (101) Do we know this for certain? How? These are the unanswered questions I had while reading comments like that. (In this case he is erring on the side of the non-specialist, who would be confused by an introduction of all the ambiguities.)
Overall though, I really enjoyed this book. Besides a few glitches it was at a level for the beginner reader to understand clearly. Whenever possible Roetzel referred to Paul's letters to make a point. He also summarized scholarly opinion about an issue, and provided further references for reading in the helpful selected bibliography at the back of the book. Even though the book has too much detail for the general public, it would be great for a serious student who is analyzing the letters of Paul. Overall it was well written and interesting. I think the only problem was that the author stated that this book was for the non-specialist, but I think it would be difficult to understand for someone with no background at all in Paul's writings. I would suggest a reader to be familiar with Paul's letters before he/she decides to read the book.
Conversations.......2001-04-29
The Letters of Paul: Conversations in Context, by Calvin J. Roetzel, is a book on the letters of Paul written from a historical perspective. As the subtitle implies, Roetzel attempts to interrupt the letters in the historical context in which they were written, as the writer Paul converses with his readers. Roetzel analyzes Paul's letters within first-century Judaism and the world of mystery religions, stoicism, Neo-Pythagoreanism and Gnosticism. Roetzel examines the structure and function of the letter in the ancient world. He attempts to show how Paul used this medium to express the authoritative understanding of Christian life to communities that where experiencing specific problems. As for presenting a historical background on Paul and his letters, Roetzel does an admirable job. The book is outlined and organized well. He does emphasis the role of the historical setting for proper interruption of scripture, but I feel the canonical context is significant, also. Paul's letters were clearly written for particular situations during his lifetime, but they exist in canon today because the early church found value in them for themselves in different times and contexts.

This is a terrific introduction to the Apostle Paul and the letters attributed to him in the New Testament. Roetzl is a superbly clear and concise writer who knows how to write introductory material without distorting and oversimplifying. This is a well tested textbook, and the new fourth edition brings it into line with the most current Pauline scholarship. Roetzl fully incorporates the continuing influences of the "Sanders revolution" into his own understanding of Paul and his writings. The book provides a thorough treatment of each of the epistles in terms of posible dating, situation, and literary structure before explicating the primary themes. Roetzl does divide the Paul's letters into the categories of undisputed and disputed and treats them roughly according to his own chronology. Some will quibble with the ordering and the categorization, but Roetzl is far from dogmatic on these positions. Most importantly, as the subtitle indicates, Roetzl takes seriously the role Paul's letters play in an ongoing relationship with the churches to which he writes. In line with the the contemporary trend, he extends this principle to Romans, moving further away from the older, non-situaltional way of reading. I have used this as a textbook with undergraduate students and they have complimented it highly.

Book Description
America raised three distinct forces to win its revolution: untrained, short-service militiamen; state troops; and the regular Continentals. The latter were the backbone of the army, providing a disciplined and effective fighting force. Some infantrymen served with Arnold's Lake Champlain fleet as marines, while others fought conventionally in sieges and field battles. This book takes a close look at the Continental infantryman of the period examining all facets of their daily life including recruitment, training, service conditions and combat experiences. Many armies have saved their nation: the Continentals helped build theirs.

Not worth the cost.......2006-02-17
I had high hopes, which were dashed by this less than middle school level book.
Hardly worth a continental.......2005-04-17
Other than reminding us of women camp followers, this book really doesn't do that much of a job informing us of the men who served in America's founding. Just as he fails to truly remind us of his ability to improvise. Often wearing the simple much better suited Hunting Shirt when euorpean uniforms were available. Often bringing a modified fowling piece used for hunting when muskets were not to be had, along with powder horn and shot bag when cartridge boxes were not available. And I thought it rather boring.
Osprey usually produces better.
They Served and Suffered.......2004-09-24
As John Milsop notes in Osprey Warrior #68, Continental Infantryman of the American Revolution, the Americans raised three distinct armies during the War for Independence: militia, state troops and the Continentals. It was George Washington's dream to raise and equip an all-volunteer and professional army that could best the British redcoats on the battlefield, but circumstances continually frustrated the realization of that aspiration. The Continental Army that did emerge, as described by Milsop, was often dressed in ragged uniforms and poorly fed, but willing to soldier on. Indeed, Milsop concludes that "the willingness of the Continental infantry to endure privation may have contributed as much to final victory as did their skill on the battlefield." Although much of this volume covers fairly familiar material for anyone familiar with the American soldier in the Revolution, Milsop is able to retain the reader's interest by carefully weaving first-person accounts into a coherent narrative.
Continental Infantryman of the American Revolution begins with 5-6 page sections on the enlistment, training and equipment of the American regulars. Milsop's comment that "the absence of field sanitation and basic cleanliness promoted sickness, weakening the fighting power of the army" highlights an under-appreciated vulnerability of the American forces (oftentimes, historians attach too much significance to alleged American tactical clumsiness or skill, rather than basic meat-and-potato soldier skills). Most readers familiar with the American Revolution will be aware of Von Steuben's drill instruction at Valley Forge, but few will be aware - as Milsop details - his efforts to reform American camp procedures, including latrine digging. Apparently, about the only equipment that the American soldier had a decent supply of was muskets or rifles, but the Continentals were desperately short of uniforms and footwear. Camp life was tough on the Continentals, who were usually hungry and paid with almost worthless paper currency. Mutiny was fairly common and Milsop notes that one particularly large mutiny in 1781 cost the Continentals more men than any single battle of the war. The remainder of Milsop's narrative includes sections on campaigning, belief and belonging, the experience of battle and notes on museums.
The color plates in the volume are: a private from the Commander-in-Chief's Guard, 1778; Von Steuben drilling at Valley Forge; the night attack at Stony Point; the New Windsor cantonment; four starving Continentals; the charge of the Deleware-Maryland Battalion at Cowpens; Aftermath of the Battle of Trenton; and a Continental infantryman with equipment in 1781. Compared to other Osprey volumes, these color plates tend toward mediocre, but are acceptable. Most of the other illustrations are very commonplace examples.
Despite triumphs at Saratoga and Yorktown, the Continental soldier's main contribution was his ability to remain in the field despite crippling logistical shortfalls. Quite frankly, it was beyond the ability of the cash-strapped colonies to maintain 20-25,000 regular soldiers in 1775-1783 and the only way that it was managed was that the army put up with gross shortages because enough troops believed in the worthiness of sacrifice for the cause (Confederate troops would be in the same situation in 1864-1865). Thus, the ultimate success of the American Continental would seem to be a good example of Napoleon's dictum that in war, the moral is to the material as three is to one.

Book Description
Americans often think of New Jersey as an environmental nightmare. As seen from its infamous turnpike, which is how many travelers experience the Garden State, it is difficult not to be troubled by the wealth of industrial plants, belching smokestacks, and hills upon hills of landfills. Yet those living and working in New Jersey often experience a very different environment. Despite its dense population and urban growth, two-thirds of the state remains covered in farmland and forest, and New Jersey has a larger percentage of land dedicated to state parks and forestland than the average for all states. It is this ecological paradox that makes New Jersey important for understanding the relationship between Americans and their natural world.
In New Jersey's Environments, historians, policy-makers, and earth scientists use a case study approach to uncover the causes and consequences of decisions regarding land use, resources, and conservation. Nine essays consider topics ranging from solid waste and wildlife management to the effects of sprawl on natural disaster preparedness. The state is astonishingly diverse and faces more than the usual competing interests from environmentalists, citizens, and businesses.
This book documents the innovations and compromises created on behalf of and in response to growing environmental concerns in New Jersey, all of which set examples on the local level for nationwide and worldwide efforts that share the goal of protecting the natural world.
