But even in a tropical paradise, Jack is plagued by misadventure. He gets a violent case of blood poisoning (after chasing a headless chicken), discovers the perils of male bonding (in a pepper-eating contest with his father), and has his heartstrings twanged by an older woman (his sister’s best friend)—to name just a few of his trials and tribulations in these eight fierce and funny stories.

When his father moves the family to Barbados, Jack learns that life is not always idyllic on an island paradise.
Customer Reviews:
This is a great book.......2006-10-19
Jack's New Power is great. The best chapter is at the end when he goes to the cock fight and loses a piece of money. Even though his sister is annoying, she ends up being right. I felt bad for Jack, kind of, at the end. He's off to Florida and he doesn't know what that is going to be like.
The funniest part was when he is totally purple and is trying to hide that fact by running around the neighborhood at night when it is dark. Even though he doesn't want to see anyone, someone else is running at night too. He ends up being his friend.

I loved this Book about Jack and his Memoirs. I read it in One week!!!!

i know this is a kids book, and i read it a few years ago, but every once in a while i get it out and read it from cover to cover again. every time i read this book i get inspired about life. does that seem a little drastic? i love this book. it's like my security blanket. read this book!
Jack's New Power : Stories From A Caribbean Year.......2000-03-30
What a truly great book. I read this when I was in 4th grade. It has a beautiful mix of comedy and just plain interesting writing. It's the best book that I've ever read in my entire life. I also own my own copy of it. I would automatically recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh. This is a great book for all ages. I would also like to recommend "Heads Or Tails" which is also in the same series. I am also currently reading the third book in the series, "Jack's Black Book". It's great. Everyone should go out and buy copies of all three books and read them.

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to introduce Fourier descriptors as a method for measuring the shape of whole, or parts of, organisms. Fourier descriptors refers to the utilization of Fourier analysis, primarily the Fourier series as a curve fitting technique, that can numerically describe the shape of irregular structures such as are commonly found in living organisms. The quantitative characterization of irregular forms is often the first step toward elucidation of the underlying biological processes, whether they be genetic, evolutionary, or functional. The first five chapters discuss the theory behind the use of Fourier descriptors and the remaining chapters show case studies of how they can be used in various fields of biology such as anatomy, cell biology, medicine and dentistry. This is the first book solely devoted to this subject.
Customer Reviews:
The only one of its kind - well worth a look.......2000-04-05
The use of Fourier analysis to describe complex shape outlines is preceded by mountains of theoretical works, only an exceedingly small proportion of which are intelligible to the average biologist. This book attempts to present a sound theoretical basis to the use of FA, and follow this up with practical examples showing the actual use of Fourier descriptors. The book succeeds in sufficiently relating the background to FA to make a start, and shows examples of which directions may be taken by the investigator. After all, FA is only a data transformation, with actual analysis beginning afterward. What one does with one's Fourier descriptors is up to them, and chapters on face shape, gait pattern, cell pattern and trabecular bone structure help to show the multitude of choices one has. A single volume like this probably must have weak points however. Whilst elliptic FA is covered, it seems to be tacked on to the (comprehensive) description of the conventional method. Some points of EFA are more difficult to grasp than ordinary FA, and this doesn't help. Also, if the numerous authors providing practical examples had given a little bit more detail on why they had chosen the analyses they did, some of the fog may have cleared for the novice user. Still, this is the only book of its kind, and well worth a look for any biologist too foolish to have kept well clear of mathematics.

Book Description
LORD KELVIN. In 1840, a precocious 16-year-old by the name of William Thomson spent his summer vacation studying an extraordinarily sophisticated mathematical controversy. His brilliant analysis inspired lavish praise and made the boy an instant intellectual celebrity.
As a young scholar William dazzled a Victorian society enthralled with the seductive authority and powerful beauty of scientific discovery. At a time when no one really understood heat, light, electricity, or magnetism, Thomson found key connections between them, laying the groundwork for two of the cornerstones of 19th century science -- the theories of electromagnetism and thermodynamics.
Charismatic, confident, and boyishly handsome, Thomson was not a scientist who labored quietly in a lab, plying his trade in monkish isolation. When scores of able tinkerers were flummoxed by their inability to adapt overland telegraphic cables to underwater, intercontinental use, Thomson took to the high seas with new equipment that was to change the face of modern communications. And as the world's navies were transitioning from wooden to iron ships, they looked to Thomson to devise a compass that would hold true even when surrounded by steel.
Gaining fame and wealth through his inventive genius, Thomson was elevated to the peerage by Queen Victoria for his many achievements. He was the first scientist ever to be so honored. Indeed, his name survives in the designation of degrees Kelvin, the temperature scale that begins with absolute zero, the point at which atomic motion ceases and there is a complete absence of heat. Sir William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, was Great Britain's unrivaled scientific hero.
But as the century drew to a close and Queen Victoria's reign ended, this legendary scientific mind began to weaken. He grudgingly gave way to others with a keener, more modern vision. But the great physicist did not go quietly. With a ready pulpit at his disposal, he publicly proclaimed his doubts over the existence of atoms. He refused to believe that radioactivity involved the transmutation of elements. And believing that the origin of life was a matter beyond the expertise of science and better left to theologians, he vehemently opposed the doctrines of evolution, repeatedly railing against Charles Darwin. Sadly, this pioneer of modern science spent his waning years arguing that the Earth and the Sun could not be more than 100 million years old. And although his early mathematical prowess had transformed our understanding of the forces of nature, he would never truly accept the revolutionary changes he had helped bring about, and it was others who took his ideas to their logical conclusion.
In the end Thomson came to stand for all that was old and complacent in the world of 19th century science. Once a scientific force to be reckoned with, a leader to whom others eagerly looked for answers, his peers in the end left him behind -- and then meted out the ultimate punishment for not being able to keep step with them. For while they were content to bury him in Westminster Abbey alongside Isaac Newton, they used his death as an opportunity to write him out of the scientific record, effectively denying him his place in history. Kelvin's name soon faded from the headlines, his seminal ideas forgotten, his crucial contributions overshadowed.
Destined to become the definitive biography of one of the most important figures in modern science, Degrees Kelvin unravels the mystery of a life composed of equal parts triumph and tragedy, hubris and humility, yielding a surprising and compelling portrait of a complex and enigmatic man.
Customer Reviews:
Degrees Kelvin - a biography that does justice to it's subject.......2007-09-30
David Lindley's biography of Lord Kelvin is one of the most enjoyable books that I have ever read. The author provides a fair assessment of the man within his historical and scientific milieu and one is left with a sense of having obtained a deeper understanding of 19th century scientific thinking. The complexities of the foundation of thermodynamics are dealt with capably as is the scientific outlook of Kelvin as an advocate of a purely mechanical universe, in particular against the changing views towards the end of the 19th century. Overall a balanced approach between science and personal detail for a book of this type.
An obstinate genius!.......2007-07-12
Another remarkable British physicist of the 19th century. The genius of William Thomson was formidable, capable of tackling every challenge in science quite fast, though not always totally right, but helping to narrow possible solutions and enriching scientific debate of the time. The book took you to a great epoch of scientific knowledge and progress, from the theory of heat and the beginnings of Thermodynamics, the marvellous story of the trasatlantic cable and even the perfection of ships compasses to compensate the magnetic effect of the new Iron ships that were built by the British Navy. Although I think John Clerk Maxwell is definitely the 19th century physics genius, Thomson place his name near to Faraday and several others that contributed to the dynamic and flourish scientific knowledge of the second half of the 1800.
William Thomson was a genius, but seems that to accept new ideas was not an easy process for him. After reading the book my opinion is the same as Maxwell -- he was so busy on diverse interest that he was incapable of focusing on only one subject.
Science Enthusiast.......2007-01-16
This was a good book. The author does a nice job documenting the life and times of Lord Kelvin. It may not have been a goal of the author, but I think this book clearly illustrates that advances in science are not the work of one person, but collaboration between many different thinkers. Enjoy the read!
Applied physicist.......2006-09-12
I was surprised to learn of his many commercial inventions where he applied the physics he had discovered. His early work in product testing of the cable for the transatlantic telegraph cable was years ahead of its time. I found this book an easy read, Kelvin (Thomson) was a real down to earth scientist and the author has captured his essence.
Powerful Forgotten Scientist.......2006-04-18
Degrees Kelvin, written by David Lindley, is a book about a very influential figure in the world of physics who is sometimes forgotten.
The book chronicles the life of William Thomson (eventually Lord Kelvin) from the time that he was an inquisitive student in his father's mathematics lectures at Glasgow University in England, through the great and eventually turbulent events in Thomson's scientific career. Very early on in his life Thomson became the Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University, a position that he was to hold for much of his lifetime. Most notable, in his career that spanned many different fields, was his work with electricity for the telegraph industry. His work in this field allowed for the construction of the first transatlantic telegraph and improved upon the design of wires to transmit electricity over long distances. One of Thomson's lesser known, but still important accomplishments was the creation of the first modern physics textbook. There are many other interesting things that were important in Thomson's life and Lindley goes into great detail.
One of the most endearing aspects of this book is the way that it can embrace science yet still read like a novel. One of the book's flaws is that at times it gives to much background information about other 19th century scientists that eventually slow down the reading and detracts from the author's main message. In writing this biography Lindley was trying to create something to represent a very important scientist whose name is lost in history. This biography is extremely interesting to read because Thomson has helped to shape many scientific principles of the modern age. This book would be recommendable to anyone who enjoys science, in particular physics, and who would like to read about a man who helped physics come to be. Overall, it is decently presented and anyone who likes science would probably enjoy most of the book.

She Lives Her Dream .......2006-04-10
How many of us are able to say that we are living our dream? I believe Dee Dee Jonrowe is doing just that! My opinion of an athlete is not one who wins an important event, but the one who is consistent time after time, year in and year out. Dee Dee Jonrowe and her dogs exemplify this. She has a passion for her dogs, racing, and life. Her story is extraordinary, and I believe after reading this book, that she is as well. I hope she continues to race and promote her passion for this sport. Congratulations to Dee Dee Jonrowe(Miss Consistency)for your fourth place finish in the 2006 Iditarod!!!
A one-eye opener into suffering of dogs in Iditarod.......2005-11-17
Although the book is an eye opener about the Iditarod, Jonrowe should have told us more about the suffering the dogs endure. She does tell us that mushers sleep on their sled while the dogs race. And, during the race DeeDee says numerous accidents happen-- mushers hit trees and bounce off rocks. But she doesn't give enough details. The reader is never told that dogs die in the race, that they develop ulcers, lung damage, anemia, rupture discs, paralyis, pneumonia and viral diseases.
Great book, very inspiring..........2005-06-17
I have read this book, found it most inspiring, and learned so much from DeeDee Jonrowe.. This book has been an example in 'endurance' for me for every day living.... There should be more books like this one..DeeDee is a special person who loves her dogs. Once you open the cover, it's impossible to lay it down till you read the last page.... Worth reading, and learning from... how she cares for the dogs, loves them, as they ARE her best friends..And after traveling to Alaska and visiting in Denali Nat. Park, seeing the dogs there, I realized just how MUCH the dogs love to run. It's their life.. a life they love. There is so much to learn from the dogs and the 'mushers'. And this book takes you to the 'real experience' of running with the dogs. Quite inspiring. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know the truth, and how it 'really is'.. An excellent book.!!!
DeeDee Jonrowe's tale of her passion... sleddogs .......2005-06-17
I have had the pleasure of meeting DeeDee on many occasions and I can say without hesitation she is one of the most respected women in mushing and in her community. Her book is all about her passion, her sleddogs, her best friends, and her adventure with them... her love for these wonderful dogs, her committment to them, and to mushing. She is one of the most amazing, strong, honest and intelligent women I have ever met... read this book, it's worth much more than it's cost. You will feel as if you have just taken a trip down the Iditarod trail with your own team of amazing huskies... what a pleasure to be able to share this through DeeDee. I can't say enough about her or her book... just trust this and other reviews and don't miss this book...
A Testament to the Partnership Between a Musher and her Dogs.......2005-06-17
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the incredible relationship between mushers and their dogs. Many animal lovers dream of a job where you can really spend time with your pets, mushers live that every day. As a person interested in animal welfare, I am familiar with the concerns that have been raised about the Iditarod. However, I've actually seen the race myself, and it is crystal clear that what makes those dogs run is the love of the sport itself, and an incredible devotion to the "Lead Dog" who just happens to be human. It is also clear that a love for the dogs is the primary motivation for the mushers. The life of an Iditarod musher is not easy, in fact, it appears that the "dog's life" is the easy one here! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about sled dog racing or life in Alaska.

Book Description
This volume (the second in a new series) illustrates all the users of the F-86F, including the South African Air Force's No.2 Squadron which flew with the 18th FBW, in contemporary wartime colour. These aircraft were some of the most colourful F-86s ever to see action, and the author has used his extensive contact base to accumulate one of the largest private collections of Korean colour material in the world. Accompanying the photos are detailed captions, quotes from pilots in action and a full appendices listing of the various units that served in Korea, plus specifications/cutaways of the aircraft flown.

"You Are There", flying the F86 in Korea........2000-07-31
Osprey's author Warren Thompson has woven an excellent collection of candid and "formal" photos with historical information and personal stories to give the reader a real "I was there" experience.
The focus of the book is operational, and with the exception of a cutaway drawing and pertinent specs of an F-84-30, there is little technical data. But if you want to know what it was like to be assigned to a Sabre squadron in Korea, look no further.
There are dozens of photos in sharp, clear, brilliant color, with detailed captions that flesh out the "story line" with additional information, adding to the reader's immersion in the era.
The only criticism I have is that the type face is kinda small and would be easier to read if it was bolder. Big deal! :)
The bottom line is that this is a "must have" for any F-86 nut, and I am looking forward to picking up the other volumes in Osprey's "over Korea" series (F-51, F-84 and B-26)

Product Description
All is not well in American civic life. Citizen participation is too infrequent, too inconsistent, too unequal, and too ill informed. Democracy at Risk not only reveals the dangers of civic disengagement, but also diagnoses the causes and suggests that there may be cures. This important book explores the problem of Americans decreasing involvement in their own public affairs. It argues that we should not simply blame citizens for this sorry state. Much of the responsibility lies with our ill-designed political system, which tends to dampen involvement, sharpen participatory disparities between groups, and discourage serious attention to political campaigns and policy discussion. In Democracy at Risk, a team of leading political scientists performs three essential tasks: *They document recent trends in civic engagement. *They show how these trends have been shaped by the design of political institutions and public policies. *They provide recommendations on how to improve the quality, amount, and distribution of civic engagement. Democracy at Risk focuses on three key factors influencing public participation: the electoral process, including political campaigns and subsequent elections; the American metropolis, including demographic changes and evolving development patterns; and the critical role of nonprofit organizations, voluntary associations, and the philanthropy that helps keep them growing. Undertaken with the support of the American Political Science Association, the book tests the proposition that scholarship can provide useful insights on the state of our democratic life. It charts a course for reinvigorating civic participation in the worlds most powerful democracy.
