The illustrations in this book are not the same woodcut type illustrations typical in other books in this series. If you are looking for a good picture of a tree, I suggest you look elsewhere.

The book does contain Latin names for plants pictured, though, if this is helpful to you.

Like traveling with a tour guide!.......2007-08-20

This book provided lots of helpful information during our exploration of the state. It provided maps, accommodations, restaurant that suits our budget, scenic places, and a bit of history about the state; its climate and its people. It covers all sides of Idaho: Southwest, South Central, The High Country, North Central and the Panhandle. We stayed in BOY-see, not BOY-zee and certainly not the French "bwah-zay! As you could see, the author added humor to this guide. As suggested, we jogged the serene tree-lined Boise River Greenbelt, biked at the pristine Boise Front, explore the Grove--the largest park near downtown, and clicked our cameras away to capture the scenic mountains. As we strolled down the cosmopolitan area, we knew exactly where to eat, where to go for amusement, and where to withdraw money. We had fun. We also explored the beautiful city of Eagle--a place that took our breaths away. Our next stop? Coeur D'Alene. And we're taking our tour guide with us: The Moon Handbooks.Cold Eyes

An above average guide to the state of Idaho.......1999-12-12

After reading some of the reviews on this book, I decided to reread The Idaho Handbook. The book that I read was quite a bit different than some of the reviews.

While the author's position on land-use is well documented throughout the book, I would hardly classify those views as extreme. Quite a few of the Idahoans that I talked with in the two weeks that I spent in Idaho last summer expressed real concerns regarding land-use throughout the state.

When I am looking for a tour book, I want something more than the AAA travel books. The book contains a significant amount of the history of the state. The book also contains all of the usuals for a tour book - an objective analysis of the lodging and food options in many small towns. This is very important as some parts of the state, the options are somewhat limited.

In addition, he covers the major (and many of the minor) attractions in the state. A number of these attractions were not found in other books.

I enjoy the Moon Guides a whole lot more than other guides. Their strength is that that they are written by people who spend a lot of time travelling throughout the state rather than the tourist areas. For example, Deke Castleman's Nevada Handbook dedicated 10-15% of the book on the Las Vegas area.

A Toot for Root.......1999-11-25

Idaho may not be everyone's idea of a "hot potato" destination. But if you want a clever, concise guide to a wonderful state -- this is it. Check out "Rural Bar Etiquette" on p. 78 for a sample of Root's humor.

This is not your average dry guide (Although Root's sense of humor is indeed dry!) You will find instead detailed descriptions and opinions(some very funny) which can help you decide the places that might be of special interest to you. It is one of the best guide books I have ever read.

Don't be put off by the author's politics; a good book........1999-10-21

This book covers the state reasonably well and will help you make good decisions about where to go and what to avoid. I used it during a recent three-week trip.

It's not superlative, so normally I wouldn't post. After reading the first two reviews, however, I almost didn't buy the book, so I wanted to persuade others that the author's frequent political intrusions need not push you away. His opinions do slant the narrative and make some of the sidebars less attractive, but I found them easy to ignore.

Given the absence of other guidebooks, the solid coverage of the food/lodging/activities stuff makes this a valuable resource. It's also consistent with Moon's emphasis on hidden places and the great outdoors. An added bonus is that the author has a talent for capturing the feel of a place; this doesn't suffer much because of his political views.

Those who've come to trust Moon publications shouldn't hesitate.

Idaho Guide filled with Bias and Discrimination.......1999-06-03

I buy these kind of books to decide what activities to do on vacation with my family. I do not buy these books to listen to an author complain about peoples religion, political beliefs, or any of the sort. If this author would have made the comments about a Black Community about a community that has a large Mormon population he would have be censored and his writing rejected. Although the book does give some good information about local communities, it pales in comparison to the detailed information given in the Wyoming and Montana versions that I have. To bad the author was to busy bashing Amtrak, Mormons, and Conservatives, instead of giving accurate information. The author fails to point out several points of interest that I do know of.

Jamie writes in her journal every single day, creating a story that is a mix of biography and fantasy. She renames her friends and her classmates as well as herself. As Isabella (Is), she is able to zap away popular girls with a flick of the wrist. In reality, she feels like she is in the shadow of her older sister, Allie, a cheerleader, and she is often too nervous to talk to her crush or too scared to stand up to the bullies.

Then her journals are published, and the book becomes a bestseller. As Jamie rises to fame, she goes from shocked to amazed. Fans, appearances, book signings - suddenly, this is all so much fun! For a while, that is, until her classmates realize that Jamie's characters are based on them and the backlash begins.

With all of the attention and hoopla surrounding Jamie, will she ever come back down to Earth? Luckily, the answer is yes. The moral of the story: Be true to yourself. This is a cute book, especially for kids suffering through the popularity contest known as middle school. It may also encourage readers to acknowledge their hidden talents, be it journaling, writing, or something completely different.

How my Journal Became a Bestseller.......2006-10-08

This book is about a girl who accidentally emails her teacher her diary instead if her assignment. The teacher thinks it's the greatest piece of writing and reads it to the class. Then she becomes a famous author, even appearing on TV, in a matter of weeks.

I thought this book was atrocious. First of all, the plot is completely and 100% improbable. This would NEVER happen in real life. Normally I can suspend my belief when the story line is only semi probable, but not with this novel.

I appreciate the fact that Julia wanted to relay a message of being yourself. The book does teach the reader not to worry about what people gossip about. The whole message was ruined for me when Jamie went and talked badly about the same girl she was writing about. It was so hypocritical.

Overall I thought the story lacked any sort of depth. Skip this book, you'll be glad you did.

This book is REALLY good!! I loved it! I read it in 5 days,(and I never read that fast!) that's how good it was. This girl (Jamie Bartlett) accedentally turns in her journal in instead of her English essay. Jamie's essay gets sent here and there until it gets published. "How My Private Personal Journal Became a Bestseller" has a good moral for girls. It's that being yourself is good, and popular people don't always get their way. And that clothes and style isn't everything.

This book gives you practice tests that are MCAT style at the end of sections and thats what makes it the best review book out there. The MCAT is about not only learning the concepts but about PRACTICE. And this book does both really well.. Buy the book, use it, improve your score. Simple!

Better than Exam Krackers.......2007-06-30

I never really had problems with Physics during undergrad, and assumed that I would have no problem with the MCAT. I bought the whole EK series including the 1001 question books. I read them I dont know how many times (I've been studying for months), but by the end I was very worried about my physics. Nothing made sense. After purchasing this book, everything makes sense again. Unlike EK, it offers a lot of very good example problems, and the questions at the end of each chapter really drill the IMPORTANT points, not just random physics questions. They help you memorize the equations, but stressing them in their problems. The problems are not really MCAT format, however, if you are having trouble with physics this book will definitely get you on the right track. The questions are not there to simulate MCAT problems so much as drill the important concepts into your brain. I haven't taken my test yet, I have two weeks to go...but I am feeling good, and I am considering purchasing the NOVA chem and bio books. I liked exam krackers when I first started, but I am beginning to feel they cut to many corners and have a tendency to confuse you by making things too easy. I give this book 5 stars if you need to RELEARN physics....if you are just looking for problems, this is not the book for you.

I appreciate the humor which Biehle brings to the subject- the review he provides is quite thorough. I would have liked to have seen some combination concept passages (e.g. thermodynamics, fluids, and work-energy in one passage) because I feel that is the direction that the MCATs are heading in- but overall I am really satisfied with this purchase.

This is an abysmal recording of Stalky and Co. Read by some vapid, arch young woman who doesn't get sarcasm or irony. In that marvelous scene early on in which M'Turk sees the keeper poaching a vixen in cubbing season, goes all feudal and Irish, and confronts the landowner, the silly besom reads it as if it's Eeyore confronting Piglet. That scene was funny to me when I was 7 and I didn't even understand most of it. And she's American. I am actually going to trash the tape to the publisher. Regardless of non PC stuff, I love Kipling, especially Stalky, Kim, and Puck. Every summer holidays since I was quite young, I began ceremoniously by reading Stalky , Kim, and The Sword in the Stone. A great story, ruined by a reader who does not understand it. Soporific.

This is my absolute favorite book of all time. Not only is the story brilliant - Stalky & Co. repeatedly outwitting their elders and peers in creative and innovative ways - but the language is pure gold. The book is chocked full of delightful gems of British schoolboy slang, from giglamps to fags to brollies - and the teachers' vocabulary is spectacular. Say what you like about Kipling, but this book is magnificent.

With Stalky, McTurk and Beetle around, you know that school will never be boring. They are a terror to the house-masters, the prefects, and just about everyone else. And, college complete, out they go, bursting upon an unsuspecting world!

I must admit that I have not read much Rudyard Kipling, but this is one of my favorite books! Kipling takes an irreverent look at late-nineteenth century British school life, taking the reader along on a hilarious journey from one adventure to another. As this book was originally written with the younger reader in mind, they will no doubt enjoy seeing these students outmaneuver and overwhelm their elders. But, even if you are only young at heart, you will still enjoy this wonderfully hilarious book. I have read it three times over the years, and do not hesitate to recommend it highly to everyone!
