not comprehensive.......2005-12-01
I found this guide barely scratches the surface of travel possibilities in Botswana, offering few choices within each price range, and scant historical or cultural information. If you plan to visit only northern Botswana or the Central Kgalagadi (as most tourists so) then better to purchase the Bradt guide, which even after 2 years in Botswana, I still find interesting. The sight seeing and accomodation information in Lonely PLanet guide is meager at best, offering few choices. In Botswana, the best and most interesting places are off the beaten path, and Lonely Planet did not bother to find many of them for their readers. If you plan on visting southern or eastern Botswana (near Gaborone or Selebi-Phikwe) then buy a guide that includes South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia as well. This guide was fairly useless to me and has hardly left my bookshelf in the 2 years I've been in Bots! For a truly enjoyable holiday, buy a different guide.
Watch out for 7 digit phone numbers.......2003-06-19
Dear Readers,
I bought this book before going to Botswana Summer 2002. This book was useful, but most of the phone numbers are incorrect since the govt. has not completely switched over to 7 digits from 6 digits. It did help me go on vacation while there and gave me some good ideas of what to do. The maps are rather inadequate also.

You Just Can't Get Lost With This One..........1998-11-10
Swaney's guide to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is the best on the bookstore shelf. The level of detail is superb, from major cities to rural villages. She should consider herself more a regional geographer, as her detail concerning things like history, climate, people, and place are akin to that of one! All this and she manages to fit in the best deals on lodging, food, and travel sites, not to mention important info concerning safety and hazards associated with travel. I used this book extensively during my travels throughout last year, when I lived in Windhoek. Indeed, you can find no better than this- and the information is as good or better than what the locals give! I once had the opportunity to meet her at a hostel in Windhoek, when I was doing some academic research there, and never had the chance to tell her how much I praise this guide!

Absolute must have for visitors to Southern Africa.......1999-10-22
The book was our bible during our summer '99 holiday to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Without it we wouldn't have made it in the timeframe we had for sure. Be sure to buy the most recent version, 'cause these regions are developing faster than you can imagine. Due to the guide we discovered loads more country beauties than we would have. You'll absolutely get your money's worth.

Customer Reviews:
Physics/math study.......2007-02-22
This is an absolute necessity for a graduate student! Studying math/physics. One of the very best available. I was very pleased in the condition of the book, and the price made it affordable for me.
The work of a master.......2006-12-26
Landau's approach to Classical Field Theory demonstrates his ability to be clear, concise, and elegant without drowning out the physics with math. I will say, however, that Landau requires a certain maturity to appreciate his style (same goes for Rudin's books of analysis). I would recommend this title to those with a working knowledge of classical E & M, vector/tensor analysis, and of special relativity. It is also wise to work through the author's Theoretical Mechanics to get a taste of their style. I believe, contrary to many, that this book is appropriate for self study if one is willing to do the work (not only the exercises but following along pencil in hand). I suggest reading a passage and then covering it up and then trying to do the derivations by hand. I also suggest the study of Hermann Weyl's Space-Time-Matter for more on GR. My only complaint is the quality of print, which has is not the fault of the authors. It is especially annoying at first.
Overrated for Learning.......2006-12-02
L&L, while elegant, is umotivated in the justifications that start their derivations. If the subject matter is grasped, then L&L is excellent for its directness. In brief, the volume is far from a learning tool.
My comment is not about the content, but about the edition........2006-08-15
First, I love this book, it is superb. If the comment is only on the contents, I'll give 5 stars without any hesitation.
However, one star is taken because I seriously despise the way the publisher treating this book, or, the entire classic Landau series. Some of the letters are vague. All letters are not dark enough, even a xerox copy is darker than this book! Some straight lines are broken.
Why can't the publisher make the classic of Landau be their own classic?
Russian School of Physics.......2006-03-27
I bought this book for a graduate E & M physics class and found it utterly useless. Maybe it would be good for a math class, but even then I doubt it.

A Somalian Novel
Customer Reviews:
Insighs to growing up in Somalia.......1999-01-01
When the Hyena Laughs is a novel about a young boy growing up in Somalia. It depicts the goings on of daily life. You learn what it means to grow up in Somalia. Not surprisingly it is a bit different than any life one could imagine within the United States. As the young boy grows, so does his facination and desire to go to the city.
I recommend this book to anyone who is genuinely interested in how other people live in a cultural experience different from our own. I suspect the author draws strongly form his own personal experiences. Sheik Abdi does a masterful job of conveying the places and times of his story.
A must read from one of the finest Somalian authors I have had the pleasure of meeting.
Customer Reviews:
A fun heartwarming read.......2007-01-09
This was a fun heartwarming read. I loved it.
I'm a man. This is the only romance novel I've ever read in my life. And I loved it. It was fun, with a real plot. A page-turner; I stayed up an extra hour late just so that I could come closer to finishing it.
The ending was touching as well.
If you're a man looking for a good read, I highly recommend it. (I only say "If you're a man" because I can't speak from a woman's perspective.)

Customer Reviews:
Offensive Yet Fascinating.......2007-07-30
I found an old edition of this at a used book store and bought it after reading only the first page, because Diana Mayo (the protagonist) seemed like a character I would like. She is described as courageous, tomboyish and intelligent - for about the first three chapters. She goes off on an expedition into the Algerian desert and is kidnapped by Ahmed Ben Hassan - The Sheik. He proceeds to rape her, repeatedly, threaten her and inflict all manner of physical, verbal and emotional abuse, which, for reasons beyond my comprehension cause her to decide about halfway through the book that she loves him madly and cannot live without him. He of course professes his absolute and undying love for her at the end of the book, even saving her from, as they say, worse than death at the hands of his hereditary enemy.
The above is why it is offensive (I didn't even touch on the absurd amount of racism toward "Orientals," something illustrated perhaps most clearly in the revealing previously obscured facts about Ahmed's parentage so that readers will not have to be shocked by a "mixed marriage"). What I find fascinating is the fact that Hull manages to present the story in such a way that by the end of the book, both the characters are at least somewhat sympathetic despite the many flaws (he is almost sociopathic and she could be considered a victim of Stockholm Syndrome, so this is a major feat indeed). A major part of this, I believe, is the fact that the rape is heavily implied at the beginning, then later ignored, but never actually described. Also, allowing Ahmed to demonstrate a certain brand of chivalry or heroism, belated though it may be, when she is kidnapped by his foe goes along way toward reducing the reader's antagonisim. And though after you read it and begin to actually think about the themes and implications you will be appalled, while you are doing the actual reading these thoughts do not occur to you; the skill it takes to produce that effect is why I gave the book three stars. If nothing else, The Sheik is of interest for its representation of what was considered "romantic" at the time it was written. Incidentally, if you are interested, the book inspired a silent film of the same name starring Rudolph Valentino.
If You Like Luke and Laura.......2007-05-13
This is the ultimate male fantasy romance novel. I literally threw it across the room when I finished it and annotated it with phrases such as "AAAHHH" and "I think I'm going to puke" and "you've got to be kidding me". If you are looking for a chuckle and beach read and you have little expectations beyond a ridiculous romance with odd undertones and a twisted ending that only a true romantic pre-1950 could enjoy, this is the book for you.
The first romance novel..........2005-10-28
The book behind the famed 1922 movie starring Rudolph Valentino was in itself a major event, for it was the very first of the genre now known as the romance novel. An instant best-seller, its steamy and suggestive plot caused much controversy. In brief, Diana Mayo is a beautiful willful, tomboyish, aristocratic Briton with a taste for adventure who goes off on a lark for a month in the Algerian desert. She is abducted by the handsome, ferocious, barbaric, sophisticated tribal leader Ahmed ben Hassan, who ensconces her in his luxurious tents in mid-desert and ravishes her. Diana abominates her captor for two months, then falls madly in love with him. Along the way, she experiences a host of adventures, including getting captured and almost killed by Ahmed ben Hassan's hereditary enemy. Oh, and at the end we learn that Ahmed ben Hassan is really half-Spanish and half-British, and of noble birth on both sides.
Well written and fun to read eight decades on for its exoticism and over-the-top romance, The Sheik is both reflects and perpetuates the absurd clichés of its age about Arabs. "She was utterly in his power and at his mercy - the mercy of an Arab who was merciless." "He was an Arab, to whom the feelings of a woman were non existent." Asked if he loves anything, the sheikh replies, "Yes, I do. I love my horses." "That he was an Arab with Oriental instincts filled her with continual dread." "When an Arab sees a woman that he wants he takes her." And this, said by the sheikh to Diana: "We teach our women obedience with a whip." In addition to these many comments on male-female relations, the novel also contains a smattering of other prejudices typical of its time ("the pungent smell of the native" and the like).
(...)
can't help but love it.......2005-07-15
It seems like this is one of those books that polarizes people. People either love it, hate it, or don't get it. Of course it's dated, incredibly racist, and horribly demeaning to women, but it's also one of the most captivating books I've ever read. The book is so well written that it is hard not to enjoy even while being disgusted. I won't bother to summarize the plot because others here already have. Part of what makes The Sheik so fascinating is to watch Diana's painful and rather revolting transformation. The Sheik is not realistic or politically correct in any way, but it is a lot of fun.
The Sheik, as one of the first modern romance novels and as one of the most popular books of the 1920's, has had a very real impact on today's romance novels.
The whole Sheik experienced has been influenced and enhanced for me by the fact I'm reading my great-grandmother's copy that she recieved for Christmas in 1922. Reading and enjoying the books of yesterday makes the past feel closer and more alive. I like to think that a woman I never knew poured over the pages of the same book.
Fun book to read........2003-04-18
The Sheik is an entertaining book for light, enjoyable reading. I don't consider it a great book, but certainly it is a classic of the 1920's. I would certainly recommend it to my friends for the reason stated above.
Before or after reading this book watch the movie it's based on with Rudolph Valentino, it's very glamorous for its time.

Snakes and Ladders.......2004-04-29
The plot of "Sheiks and Adders" (1982) might seem very similar to "Death by Water" (1968). In both novels, Sir John Appleby, retired Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police (New Scotland Yard) is invited to a new neighbor's outdoor fête and murder ensues. However, this time it is a charity masquerade at Drool Court, where an alarming proportion of the male guests are disguised as sheiks.
Sir John and his friend, Chief Constable Tommy Pride both arrive dressed as Robin Hood. Colonel Pride has received a mysterious request from the Foreign Office that he and his men should keep an eye on the affair, but he was not informed as to what the local police were supposed to be keeping an eye on. Appleby soon discovers that there is a genuine sheik, Emir Hafrait at the party, and furthermore he has been the target of numerous assassination attempts. Sir John's deduction concerning Colonel Pride's assignment is verified when one of the pseudo-sheiks is found on the archery range with an arrow through his back.
A herpetologist laden with grass snakes and adders wanders onto the scene. A bevy of nefarious Druids attempts to purify Drool Court, using the ancient ceremony of Perlustration. A local troop of Boy Scouts reenacts the relief of Mafeking. A hot air balloonist takes too many swigs out of his gin bottle and tumbles to the sward. All of these seemingly unrelated incidents come together in a quick, glorious, tongue-firmly-in-cheek finale.
Innes takes many delightful twists and turns in this farcical adventure. The only two minor problems I had with the story concern the herpetologist. He didn't seem to know that snakes are deaf, and he referred to Appleby's adventures in "The Seven Suspects" (1936) as having occurred at Oxford, when in actuality our serial detective solved this particular mystery at St. Anthony's College (which was admittedly modeled after Oxford). I honestly believe Innes worked the herpetologist into the plot just so he could include 'Adders' in his title.
Note to animal rights activists: no snakes were harmed in the construction of this plot, although the Druids do not share in the generally happy ending.
Review.......2001-12-06
It can't be said that this is a particularly good Innes. Although light-hearted and amusing enough, it is very badly plotted. The fête setting is well-drawn enough, but the rest of the plot just sags. Plot? There is nothing that can be described as a plot. (...)Nothing is done with the sheiks, apart from the problem (...)When murder does occur, this by archery(...)it is explained in one paragraph, the book then turning into an attempt to smuggle the Emir out of a house surrounded by an unfriendly crowd. Attempts to involve (...) by centring the book's feeble plot around a financial crisis involving Middle Eastern Oil (...) do not improve the book at all. In short, bad and shallow. Like all late Innes, to be avoided by the connoisseur.
