This book clearly summarizes all the threats our oceans face today from human activities. I have a BS in Marine Science and I found that this book shows the reader how complex and inter-related the oceanic systems are and how many of our activities can, AND DO, adversely affect those ecosystems. I feel this book would be a great way for anyone interested in protecting the ocean to become familiar with the spectrum of destructive activities affecting the one element that allows for life to live on this planet. Chapter by chapter there is a different ecosystem and how it is in danger of losing its marine biodiversity. In addition, the author does a great job defining many of the science terms. However, not all casual readers may find this book an easy read because they may not have the understanding of the various oceanic ecosystems.
Not an easy read or pretty picture book.......2001-09-14
There are many pretty books which do a good job cataloging threats to our ocean environment. If you want a brief, graphic outline effective at stirring your emotion and imagination stay away from this book. If you want in depth and have the time... check this out.
Boyce Thorne-0Miller took a interesting approach to a difficult assignment. She sets out to catalogue man's negative impacts of the sea and threats to oceanic biodiversity. She begins by outlining the definitions and necessity of biodiversity. Then chapter by chapter, topic by topic gives us the potential for various human-ocean interaction to damage it. She backs up her conclusions well with explanation and statistics and goes to great length to explain her deductive reasoning. This book would only be a bore to a person who doesn't have a serious interest in the subject and a little bit of a biology background. I would use this as a text for an undergraduate course on marine conservation biology. I would also suggest it for people with more than a cursory interest in marine conservation. It is wordy and thought provoking, but it presents information, it does not tell you what to think.

I bought this book in an attempt to expand my understanding of marine ecology from the perspective of a recreational scuba diver and a scientific reader.
The book seems to have a lot of good content, but I had to put it down because I didn't have the strong foundation in marine biology for it to make much sense.

Great Choice.......2000-08-12
As a long time visiter to the Owens Valley I found this book to be excellent. Its great for the first time traveler or the person who has been to the valley many times. Its section on side roads is good for those passing through the area and wanting to explore a bit. The history and geology areas are current and answer those questions that arise when encountering the vast numbers of different geological features. While no one guide does it all this book comes close. A great book for those who want a general guide to the valley, its history,geology,flora and fauna.

I was pleasantly surprised at how great this book was. It's what can be a semi-serious topic but was written so well that you laugh along with the unpleasantness and awkwardness of seeing Leigh visit with her mom for the first time.
I will definitely read the next in the series.
sharing the spotlight with... mom?.......2006-08-14
Leigh is sent off to Ireland for the summer to spend the summer with her actress mother, Annika Anderson, where her mother is currently starring in the upcoming film Danny Boy, and where she is expected to have "mother-daughter bonding time" while being her mother's personal assistant. Leigh excepts to spend her time there being bored, but Sean, her mother's twenty-one-year-old, and hot, co-star, and her bit part in the movie make the summer a little more interesting. But Annika doesn't want to share the spotlight with her newbie, unexperienced daughter, and tension gets even higher between them. Annika and Leigh have to learn to separate the actor sides of themselves from their roles as mother and daughter. This book, though it emphasizes mother-daughter relationships, is far from cheesy, and teaches good life lessons while still entertaining.
Great but..........2006-04-11
This book was good. It was about Leigh, a girl with a movie star mom. She rarely sees her mom, and doesn't like her. Thats the part I didn't like. Leigh constantly thinks about how she hates her mom! I was annoyed about some parts of the book, it was too cruel for a kids book. Its not fun reading about a girl who wants to strangle her mom! I know its about a teenager and the rough stages she goes through...but still.
Everything else was good, I thought it was funny and creative! I learned a lot of Irish stuff! The book takes place in Ireland, where Leighs mom, Anika, is filming a movie. Leigh imediatly falls in love with an Irish boy named Sean. Before she knows it, Leigh lands a small part in the movie, Sean's sister Sinedad! She soon learns that acting is harder than it looks! I better not say anymore!
Introducing A Great Summer Read.......2005-07-04
This is an amazing book, but not just because it has romance, tears, laughter, culture of an Irish nature, relationship building, and much much more. It is because it touches the reader personally. There are so many characters that you can love and hate but it is extremely fun doing both. It all starts in the summer when Leigh is sent Ireland to a movie where her mother (known as the woman that left Leigh and her father for a not so great acting career) is playing the leading lady. Leigh starts off on what seems like a train reck of a summer but she will soon find her place on set, literraly. A fun and fabulous tale of boyfriends, love, right and wrong, friendship, and of course the mother daughter battle of the century, over more than one thing. By the end of her summer she has had the experience of a lifetime and has gained a new relationship with the mother she never really felt connected to. Other than the fact that Leigh has the same beauty mark her mother has. You'll read it in a flash and be begging for more, which is okay since we are all awaiting the sequal. I loved Introducing Vivien Leigh Reid: Daughter of A Diva it just had everything that makes a great book great.

Vivien Leigh Reid hasn't spent quality time with her mother, a b list movie/telivision star, in years. So naturally she is less than thrilled about her father shipping her off to Ireland, the location of her mother's new movie, for the summer. When she arrives, there is no surprise. Her mother is being her typical diva self....she even insists that Viv pretends to be her sister so that no one will guess her real age. However, what Viv was expecting to be the worst summer ever brightens up as she lands a bit part in the movie. She also develops a crush on her mother's hunky young costar. Just when she thinks life is getting interesting, her mother steps in. She tries to sabatoge her daughter in the movie, and flirts with Viv's new crush, even though he's old enough to be her son! Viv, sick and tired off her mother, the selfish diva, decides to take off on her own. Revenge isn't so sweet when you're lost and penniless in a foreign country, though. Will Viv patch things up with her mother...or will she leave the diva behind for good?

A good first course..........2005-10-13
I first had physics in college twenty years ago. I was studying (at that time) astronomy and mathematics, so the first college-level physics class I took fully incorporated calculus and advanced mathematics. It was not until recently, as I took a position as tutor at a local community college, that I discovered a rigourous introductory physics text that did not involve calculus (only one semester of calculus is offered at the college, and usually taken concurrently with or after physics).
Walker's text, second edition, is the text we currently use. We offer one semester of physics, so we only get half-way through the text, which seems designed for a two-semester sequence. As the main focus of the college is technical, so the sections on mechanics, thermal physics and electromagnetism are the most essential sections for our degree programmes.
While this text does not assume calculus, it does assume basic trigonometry and analytic geometry. Dealing with angles and graphing are important skills to know here; dealing with vectors is introduced very early in the text, and continues to be very important throughout.
The book is well organised, with chapter summaries, problem-solving techniques summarised at the end of chapter, high concept questions, drawings, photographs, and real-world applications that relate the theory back to actual experience. From the light refraction in raindrops to the workings of the Global Positioning System, students will learn more about the interactions of the world from this text.
The examples follow a format that shows not only the worked solutions, but also the strategies employed to get to the solutions. Problems are pictured (after all, physics deals with real, substantial things), and conceptual considerations are explained (physics is largely story problems that need to be set up properly, after all). The insights and further considerations from the solutions are explored, and other practice problems are suggested (physics is always about going on to the next problem). The examples follow different categories - there are active examples, conceptual checkpoints, and real-world physics exercises.
The book is divided into five primary sections: Mechanics; Thermal Physics; Electromagnetism; Light and Optics; and Modern Physics. Mechanics largely deals with motion, introducing near the end ideas of gravity, sound, fluids and energy. This leads into Thermal Physics, the study of heat, temperature, and the laws of thermodynamics. Electromagnetism looks at electric force, charge, current, potential/potential energy, magnetism and flux. Light and Optics continues this with electromagnetic waves, proceeding to optical instruments and issues of interference and diffraction. The final section on Modern Physics deals with `fun stuff' like relativity, quantum physics, atomic and nuclear physics and radiation.
Like most texts, it comes with various supplements for students and teachers, computer-based and web-based. There are pocket companions and workbooks with solutions that can also be obtained, related to the text.
This is a good text for classroom study, and also a text for independent study. Some of the exercises are difficult to work through, but there are literally dozens (sometimes hundreds) after each chapter, so there is plenty on which to practice, and all the odd-numbered exercises have answers supplied.
