You have no idea...........2005-01-21
Just read the book and you will cry you laugh so hard. Just imagine being a student in his class like I am. It is the best class I have ever taken hands down. Whit is remarkably intellegent in all areas of herps and this book is a wonderful example of how dedicated he is to this passion.
I could envision myself in each scenario!.......1998-12-28
Whit has portrayed his adventures with herps with amazing wit. Each chapter begins with a narrative about an episode that his zest for "research" placed him in. I read a couple of different chapters to a friend over the phone (imagine an alligator in the cab of your truck!) and we both laughed so hard we were in tears. At the end of each tale is a lesson in sound zoology. Most field biologists will recognize themselves in this book.
Great book. Who'd think an herpatologist could be so funny?.......1998-01-08
Whit Gibbons gives a truly funny account of his time as a graduate student and professor, chasing reptiles through the southern US and abroad. It's funny, it's informative. This is no textbook, but rather tales of life and animal research.

Really good, thorough guide.......2004-01-06
Having Just returned from Western Papua I can say this is a really good guide. It was well researched, informative and definitely added to my enjoyment. A few of the points/suggestions seemed a bit out of date but aside from that I heartily recommend this book as a smart, sober, interesting guide. A must buy for anyone travelling to the Asmat.
The Only Guide to This Region.......2003-11-14
Being the only guidebook to West Papua/Irian Jaya alone is a major merit of it. It also has well-researched background information and decent practical details on the major tourist attractions of this area.
However, ONLY the major tourist attractions (Jayapura/Baliem/Biak/Manokwari/Asmat) are covered in any detail, and even many of those descriptions are simply accounts of the author's own travels there, which seem to have taken place many, many years ago.
There is no description of plenty of other, relatively accessible and increasingly popular parts of Papua, some of which are actually covered in the Rough Guide to Indonesia.
But with coverage of this region in general guidebooks to Indonesia invariably limited in length, this book is certainly still worth buying by anyone who wants to spend more than just a week there.

Must read for any one out there.......2003-10-11
You gotta read this one, Sana has to leave Akito and Fuka to go shoot a movie up in the moutains. While she's gone Akito starts to think and dream about her. Also while she's gone Fuka and Akito go out. What? Who wrote this? Oh, never mind. Like I was saying Sana is also thinking about Akito and how he's doing with out her. She also doesnt no if Skito likes her or not, because after she and her manager, you could say 'broke up'. She doesn't know what love is. Is Akito going to tell her the truth or is this going to be a bad book. What do you think. If you said that yes he's going to tell her. You'd be wrong. He doesn't tell her in this, book, but he gets real close. He's running to go tell her when she's getting on the bus to go to the shoot that day. Akito stops her and says he wants to talk to her when she gets back home. The book ends before she gets back by the way. but if you liked my reveiw then you must read the book, it says more then I jsut told you. Hope my reveiw helped^_^

Book Description
"Biological Neural Networks" presents a novel conceptual framework for neurobiology achieved by the application of control theory. This new paradigm provides unifying principles for understanding the functional construction of the nervous system. Konstantin Baev argues forcefully that all hierarchical levels of the nervous system are built according to the same functional principles, which are shown to underlie the highest forms of brain function. Each network hierarchy is structurally and functionally organized in such a way that a lower control system in the nervous system becomes the controlled object for a higher one, and each level of control possesses a model of behavior of its controlled object.
The book brings together for the first time the fields of neural networks (with its computational capabilities), control theory (with its hierarchical machinery), and neurobiology (with its plethora of enigmatic physiological functions, such as inborn and acquired automatic behavior). The function of the cerebellum, the limbic system, and the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamocortical loops are analyzed within this new hierarchical framework. Clinical applications include an original explanation of Parkinson's disease and suggested mechanisms of alleviating its symptoms by conducting functional neurosurgical procedures.
Baev writes with an interdisciplinary readership in mind. Neuroscientists, computer specialists and mathematicians, physicists and clinicians devoted to deciphering the way brain works will all find it fascinating and stimulating reading.
Customer Reviews:
very captivating - a dazzling introduction.......2001-04-25
Karl A. Greene in the foreword asserted that after reading this book, one will never look at neurobiology and the human brain quite the same again, and I fully concur. Baev introduces a modular framework that fuses neurobiology with control theory and opens the portals for artificial intelligence to enter. Unleashing the powers of hierarchical modeling, his monograph presents a thoroughly conceptualized and truly captivating approach to understanding the functioning of the human brain. Two thumbs up, I had to read this book five times to fully understand it, but I enjoyed it every single time.

Book Description
With this text, basic quantum mechanics becomes accessible to undergraduates with no background in mathematics beyond algebra. Containing more than 100 problems, it provides an easy way to learn part of the quantum language and to employ this new skill in solving problems. 38 figures. 1986 edition.
Customer Reviews:
Quantum Disaster.......2007-07-09
I bought this book hoping it would simplfy Quantum Mechanics; it starts out simple with some good stories; but I learned one thing from Griffiths book at least philosophically, you can't get around the math. I like the style of the book but it gets shady around Chapter 10 about 1/2 way through the book, and he loses his focus. In order to do Quantum Physics, one must gradually learn vectors, Calculus and its assorted tricks, and to think outside the box abstractly; and you can't simplify that!
Jordan half-strikes again.......2007-03-23
This is very good as far as it goes but large chunks of important quantum theory have been deliberately omitted thus devaluing the book's ultimate usefulness. It is not up to the standard I expected from the author's book on Linear Operators
An Interesting Viewpoint.......2007-01-10
This is more of a philosophical or logical (axiomatic) approach to QM from minimal principles. It's not too practical but is enlightening.
super duper.......2006-09-14
i will not add any thing newer compared to the other reviewers.
but i felt that i should vote for that book.
very clear introduction for the subject, specially for the new comers.
highly recommended.
Excellent Book.......2004-07-07
This review is written from the point of view of a philospher, poorly trained in mathematics, but still wanting to get to the meat of quantum mechanics from a methematical point of view. Wow. In this book I found what I thought I never would. It describes the mathematical world of quantum physics using the majestic simplicity of matrices and the algebra of complex numbers. As the author states in the preface, no calculus or trigonometry is required. While the math isn't downright simple, neither is beyond the grasp of someone who is bright, but hasn't taken claculus or even precalc. For those who want to journey past this book another excellent intro level quantum mechanics text that introduces wave mechanics and does assume a knowledge of basic calculus is "Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics" by J.E. House. Both are excellent!

An entertaining resource for people of all ages who want to know more about rock history, "Rock 'n' Roll and the Cleveland Connection" links national and international events in music and the world, with the primary focus on Cleveland. This is an enthusiastic celebration of rock 'n' roll.
Customer Reviews:
Soon to be a best-seller in Cleveland!.......2004-12-22
I grew up in Cleveland, and now reside in Michigan. When I was home for Thanksgiving, my brother showed me his copy of "Rock 'n' Roll and the Cleveland Connection", which I then spent a few hours with.
My first reaction? I quote the amazon.com editorial review of this book: "At 612 pages, the book will lag for readers with no interest in radio."
Somebody nailed that one. I agree; There's too much baloney about one local radio station, which I won't even mention because I personally am tired of hearing about it and don't want to contribute to its notoriety.
Suffice to say that there's a lot that's missing from "Rock 'n' Roll and the Cleveland Connection" mainly because the main thrust of the text evolves around Cleveland radio, and the constant stream of almost endless self-promotion surrounding a few personalities involved in the politics of the Cleveland music scene of the seventies and eighties. This book serves as yet another example of all that.
On a more positive note, the book is fairly well-written and has some nice pictures. While it's probably not a book that anyone will read from cover to cover, "Rock 'n' Roll and the Cleveland Connection" at over 600 pages does cover a lot of territory.
"Rock 'n' Roll and the Cleveland Connection" will probably appeal to a more conservative mainstream audience who remember the seventies and eighties music scene in Cleveland and wish to wax nostalgic. I'm sure that this book will be very popular in the Cleveland area.
corrections?.......2004-08-10
This is an important book, a milestone. And certainly, <I>Radio Daze</I> follows in its footsteps.
I regret there doesn't seem to be a way to contact the writer to update/correct her research, perhaps for future editions. For the last few years my efforts haven't succeeded.
There's gotta be a way. Does anyone know an address to send items to Deanna?
peace
Excellent book.......2003-11-05
For anyone involved in the Cleveland music scene, or just a fan of some of the greatest talent ever to (generally) stay in Cleveland, this book is a must-have. Nice work from Deanna Adams.
Awesome Book!.......2003-10-19
Just got this book for my birthday and read it in a couple of days (not easy considering it's length). But being a former Clevelander, I was able to relive many great moments in music history-the bands, the deejays, the clubs. What indepth research this author did. All the quotes & the behind- the- scenes stories of all the important musicians & people that made Cleveland such a fun town(honest!) makes it a must have for anyone interested in rock 'n' roll. It's now on my coffee table & friends who have never been to Cleveland pick it up & suddenly we're talking about all the concerts & times we lived through, proving you don't have to be from Ohio to really enjoy this book. And great photo's! Highly recommended. N from Florida
Rock 'N Roll and the Cleveland Connection.......2002-06-15
Personally, I loved this book. Three of my seven kids were avid Rock fans and, being a single mother, I ended up taking them to concerts. I also ended up a fan of many of the bands mentioned. Deanna Adams gives so many insights to the era. One can tell she set out to produce a wonderfully detailed, and truthfully told chronicle of those times. Reading the book struck such a note of nostalgia for me. Thanks for the memories, Ms. Adams. And guess what three of my "Kids" are getting for Christmas.
Book Description
"A very powerful account of a significant aspect of recent American military history."
--Journal of Military History
"Westheider has researched very thoroughly-an effort including extensive interviews with Vietnam veterans-and he possesses a rare gift for narrative that makes the result of all this research eminently readable. A highly desirable addition for both African American studies and military affairs collections. . . . [an] invaluable history."
--Booklist
"Highly recommended."
--Library Journal
"James E. Westheider persuasively argues that black soldiers were the key factor in bringing about a more egalitarian military. This book significantly advances our understanding of both race relations and armed forces."
--Charles Moskos, Northwestern University
"With this meticulous investigation of how institutional racism operated in the military of the 1960s and 70s, James Westheider provides us with a model for making sense of institutional sexism in the Tailhook-era military."
--Cynthia Enloe, author of The Morning After: Sexual Politics at the End of the Cold War
The racial tensions that have long plagued American society exist to a much lesser extent in the military where the bond of common pursuit and shared experience renders race less relevant. Or so conventional wisdom has long held.
In this dramatic history of race relations during the Vietnam war, James E. Westheider illustrates how American soldiers in Vietnam grappled with many of the same racial conflicts that were tearing apart their homeland thousands of miles away. Over seven years in the making,
Fighting on Two Fronts draws on interviews with dozens of Vietnam veterans--black and white--and official Pentagon documents to paint the first complete picture of the African American experience in Vietnam.
Westheider reveals how preconceptions and petty misunderstandings often exacerbated racial anxieties during the conflict. Military barbers, for instance, were often inexperienced with black hair, leading black soldiers to cut each other's hair, an act perceived as separatist by their white counterparts. Similarly, black soldiers often greeted one another with a ritualized handshake, or dap, as a sign of solidarity, the unfamiliarity of which threatened many white soldiers and was a source of resentment until it was banned in 1973.
Despite ample evidence of institutional racism in the armed forces, the military elite responded only when outbreaks of racial violence became disruptive enough to threaten military discipline and attract negative attention from the civilian world. A crucial addition to our understanding of Vietnam,
Fighting on Two Fronts is a compelling example of the new military history at its finest.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Overview.......2004-11-23
The book is an excellent overview of the issues facing African Americans in Viet Nam. Westheider views the racism facing African Americans in the military at that time as being the result of both personal racism, primarily from a military heavily populated by whites from the southern US, and institutional racism, both deliberate and unintentional, from the military hierarchy. Westheider shows an interesting evolution of the attitude that African Americans toward the military. Before the Viet Nam war, African Americans held a generally positive attitude about the military and viewed the military as less racist than society in general. By the end of the war, African Americans viewed the military as more racist than society in general and suspected that the military was, in fact, a tool used by society to persecute African-Americans. He uses a number of statistics to make his case. For example, in 1964, thirty percent of the population of Alabama was African American and yet there was not a single African American on any Draft Board in Alabama. There is information on racial violence in the military, racially motivated "fragging" of officers and political and ethnic oriented organizations in the military. The book is an excellent overview and is a good introduction to the subject. I enjoyed the book but I finished the book thinking that there is much more of this story to be told

Customer Reviews:
A Look Into The Ideas Behind The Icon.......2007-03-17
Che Guevara has been so etched into the public consciousness as an icon of revolution, rebellion and guerrilla warfare that it is easy for many to forget about the more intellectual aspects of the man. The "Che Guevara Reader" is the perfect tool to really study and learn the ideas behind Guevara's quest for Latin American unity against imperialism, poverty and racism. The depth of thought and analysis will be stunning to many, there are passages where Guevara writes and expresses at a level worthy of Noam Chomsky. Here we see that the man was no joke, there were very real philosophies behind his drive for revolution. The book covers Che's writings from the time of the Cuban guerrilla war against the U.S.-backed Batista dictatorship to his various speeched as Cuba's ambassador to the world. Among the most powerful pieces are his speeched at such forums as the United Nations, where Guevara gives an angry, heartfelt summary of the suffering felt in the Americas at the hands of imperialism and how the people will rise. When one looks at current events in Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador, there is more resonance to a passage where Che states, "our example will bear fruit." Some of the most fascinating passages in the book deal with the concepts behind social progress and unity, where Che stresses the need to work as one and not give in to shallow materialism. Che especially focuses on the need for education to build a stronger system and build social consciousness. Che and Fidel bashers will be infuriated by sections where Guevara clearly states that not ALL aspects of Marxism work for a society, destroying the myth of Che being a radical dogmatic Communist. There are also interesting speeches where Guevara expresses the need to analyze what kind of revolution every country needs, what worked in Cuba might not work for example, in Chile where the people elected Salvador Allende without having to resort to a guerrilla war, interestingly Latin America's recent tilt to the Left has been driven mostly be democratic elections as well. There is also a wonderful depth of feeling in writings where Che states the need for a true revolutionary to have a sense of love, real, true love and not pure cold calculation. The most rewarding experience of reading the "Che Guevara Reader" is realizing how important these ideas are for our times as well when corporate ideals have monopolized our industrial nations and created a huge gap between the poor and rich. Some will be surprised to find only a fraction of this book dedicated to pure guerrilla warfare talk (for that check Guevara's "Guerrilla Warfare") and a good 90% dedicated to discussions on society, people and the need for true social reforms in the face of tyrannical capitalism and social inequality. A valuable book so you can wear the T-shirt, but know the philosophy as well.
Che as a Guerilla Leader.......2002-06-29
Good book, but be prepared. Che was a failure as a guerrilla leader because he refused to accept the possibility that a revolution could begin and end in major population centers. He reallty didn't have many wins to his favor when he was in charge.
Che.......2001-01-20
This is a good book if you want to know about Che's Marxists theories and if you want to know some of his views on the world during his time. But this book (though it is good) only scratches the surface a good portion of these speeches and essays have been published in many other books what the editor should've done was published parts of Che's critique of the Soviet Union that Castro has hidden away, printed parts of his congo book and sections from the Bolivian Diary, and more sections from the nine volume Che Guevara writing and speeches then this book would worthy of the title Che Guevara Reader
Correction on page 13 of the chronology.......2000-10-15
Mr. Deutschmann:
On page 13 you write:
"April 1, 1965 Guevara delivers a farewell letter to Fidel Castro.....Guevara operates under the name Tatu, Swahili for "Number two."
I dont know where you got this quote of "Number two." from, but Tatu in Swahili stands for Number three. Number two is Mbiri.
Thank you.
great collection of various guevara speeches and writings.......2000-06-18
this book is a great collection of various writings and speeches by ernesto che guevara. it contains some entries in his diary of the cuban revolution, speeches he gave internationally and in cuba, and letters he wrote to people close to him. it's an interesting collection of his stuff, which is actually pretty hard to get a hold of. so if you see this book, and your interested in che, grab it, because i really had to look around for this one.
Book Description
Developed by the pioneering landscape design firm of Andropogon Associates, world-renowned for their innovative approach to integrating environmental protection and restoration with landscape architecture and design, The Once and Future Forest is a guidebook for restoring and managing natural landscapes. Focusing on remnant forest systems, it describes methods of restoring and linking forest fragments to recreate a whole landscape fabric.
The book begins by explaining the history and current situation of forest ecosystems in the eastern United States. Following that is an in-depth examination of the restoration process, with thorough descriptions of ecological strategies for landscape management along with specific examples of how those strategies have been implemented in various sites around the country. The final section provides hands-on information about the many specific details that must be considered when initiating and implementing a restoration program. All aspects of the restoration process are considered, including:
Water-opportunities for increasing infiltration, reducing pollutants, promoting habitat values
Ground-methods of protecting existing vegetation, removing fill, rebuilding soils
Plants-strategies and procedures for planting, maintenance, propagation
Wildlife-guidelines for preserving wildlife resources, management techniques to favor selected specie.
The Once and Future Forest presents a comprehensive approach to assessing sites, detailed guidelines for determining management goals, and a thorough overview of appropriate management and restoration techniques. It is an important guide for professional planners and landscape architects, government agency personnel at all levels, land managers, scientists involved in restoration work, and citizen activists who wish to do something constructive about our deteriorating forest patches.
Customer Reviews:
Great shipping time.......2007-07-17
I was impressed by how quickly this item arrived for me, less than 5 days!!
Straight up.......2005-07-26
Sauer has written a great book focusing on the restoration and management of Eastern forests. She jumps right to the point chapter after chapter making the book packed full of helpful and educational insights. The only real problem that I have with the book is that it is very regional (eastern forests) and not comprehensive in that way. But if your focus is on the Eastern US region then I highly recommend this book. Very eye opening.
some good thoughts - but seems anti-wildlife without grounds.......1999-10-21
I agree with some of what the author says, but some facts are certainly not accurate. Fopr example on page l85, the author cites a conference at Morris County Park Commission to examine deer and forests and states that "all those concerned about the current plight of deer were brought together". That is not accurate. In this case, as in every other case I have heard of, people who are for animal "rights" or animal compassion or seek to let animals continue to live are NOT INVITED to these conferences. These conferences, as this particular conference was, are confined to invitatations to people who have a narrow interest in plants. Because of the hate engendered against animals and wildlife by state division of fish and game councils, only bad publicity is being given out on wildlife. The hunting community has a lock and power base and only sees wildlife as targets and has used their dollars and power base to make wildlife out to be "the guys in the black hats". The real reason, to my mind, for forests not growing is acid rain, climate change man made problems - That is the big problem. Not wildlife.
Enlarged my awareness and understanding.......1999-01-22
If you live in this world you should read this book. It tells you about the environment in a scientific but understandable manner, and suggests ways you can make a difference. Understanding why grass does not hold much water, causing runoff and clogging our rivers with fertilizers, leading to algae growth, will give you a real impetus to plant a tree, shrub or decorative ground cover. You will never look at a large, green lawn with admiration again! This is just the beginning. I recommend this to all my friends.
