Very beautiful and helpful.......2006-02-12

This book has disucssions and beautiful color illustrations of not just birds, but frogs, snakes, fish, mammals and even some plants. There are discussions of different ecosystmes and what one might expect to encounter in each of them. There are notes on local bird lore. I took this on a guided boat tour run by one of the local people. It was extremely helpful to have the names of the birds in English AND Spanish, as the other people in the boat spoke only Spanish and the guide used mostly Spanish. The book is written from the standpoint of the Eco-Tourist. The author discusses some of the important conservation efforts in progress to preserve these beautiful and unique ecosystems.
Of course the book is not exhaustive, but fortunate is the traveller who sees all the species discussed here. In addition the book is actually quite readable and while in Yucatan, this was the guide that I frequently picked to review what I had seen or what I might be seeing on my next excursion. There are many different habitats in this part of Mexico, each with its own inhabitants. The book contains a wealth of information presented in an entertaining manner. I checked in several local bookstores, and could find nothing comperable, in English or Spanish. Although it may not satisfy the ardent birder, the book helps one feel at home when he is encountering so many new species.

Inaccurate and misleading.......2003-06-07

I can appreciate the author's intent - to create a more comprehensive guide to the wildlife of a region that is sorely lacking in accesible information. It is a pioneering effort, and I am grateful that such guides are being attempted. But after reviewing the bird plates I became quite upset - this guide will lead to many misidentifications due to innacurate portrayals and information, as well as omissions. While I can understand the impossibility of covering all the living species in a large and diverse region, it would be nice if the ones chosen were depicted accurately, and reference was made to similar species occuring within other parts of the covered range. For just one example, plate 45 shows four species of Motmot as being the ame size and shape, when the Tody Motmot is HALF the size (and a very different shape) of the others. While this is indicated (in small print), anyone relying on the pictures could easily become confused. Beletsky list Howell's excellent "Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America" in his references, but he clearly should have been paying more attention! As to omissions, if an abbreviated list is desired in the interest of keeping this book accesible for the more casual enthusiast, it would have been far better to at least focus on the species most likely to be encountered. While some rarely seen species are included, many quite visible and common birds are left out! And how could Beletsky leave out the Boat-billed Heron? Not only is this species an icon amongst Mexican birds, but it is a favorite species for boat tour operators on both coasts to find for visitors! After seeing what the bird plates are like, how could I ever feel positive about identifying other wildlife using this book?
On the positive side, I will reiterate that I am glad that such books are being written. There is often no information available (in practical form) on tropical reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, etc. But I hope guides like this will get a whole lot better! Skimping on information for portability is not the answer. Accuracy should be far more important. In Beletsky's favor are the habitat photos, and coverage of ecotourism and conservation issues.

Simply, a terrific wildlife guide and the best of its kind for Mexico. Chapters provided detailed information (with photos!) of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals found in southern Mexico. Recommeneded for any serious student of biology or dedicated eco traveler.

A Great Compact Guide to Tenerife.......2001-07-06

As a person who has never visited Tenerife, I got this guide to help prepare me for my upcoming trip. I enjoyed all the valuable information about not only the island but also its inhabitants.

The book provides practical information that travelers need to know (i.e.- money conversion, voltage and wattage, etc) and it also provides information on local customs and dress codes that will help travelers become better acquainted with the people of Tenerife.

It just keeps getting more and more better. Aaron gets busted with Kate. Kate gets her nose busted. Aisha is finding herself in a little bit of a man situation. The only thing missing was Mendel vs. Cabral. You can feel the tention when these guys get within 200 yards of each other, let alone being 2 inches from one another. Benjamin really needs to get over himself. I once thought he was a great. He was in my top ten all time great novel characters. Now he is no my all time...[bad] novel characters list. However, I do wish Lucas would have connected with Aaron instead of Kate. I am still a K-berger fan.

I loved this book! Katherine Applegate sure knows how to write 'em! The only thing I didn't like about this book was Benjamin. He really needs to get over himself! I am sick of his complaining! He and Nina used to be so cute, and I think he lost the best thing for him! I couldn't believe the ending! I waited for three weeks to get the next one. If you get a chance, read all you can. I have been reading them since last summer and I plan to read them as long as they are coming out!

Whoa! You REALLY don't know how insecure Zoey can get until she meets Kate! Meanwhile Claire is in head over heels in love with Aaron. But will everything go as she had planned ? Aisha gets a chance at a scholarship , AND SOMEONE. WHO , of WHAT will she choose ? Ben has been pushing Nina away ever since the mishap. Will Nina finally give up ? Find the answers ALL these questions in this book. MY favorite par is all about Zoey and Lucas. I also LOVED the part about Aisha. Which part ? Read it and you'll know.

I am a retired science person who volunteers as an eighth grade science teacher. My primary notion is to convince the students that an understanding of the basic ideas of physics will enable you to comprehend more complex principals. To accomplish this, I am always searching for real life examples which demonstrate physics ideas. "The Flying Circus of Physics" provides a rich mix of these examples that makes the student see physics as part of their day-to-day life and not an abstraction.

For about a year, I've restrained myself from buying this book, since the reviews and description did not reflect the 2007 (once set at 2006) edition. About a month ago, I suggested they do something about it. I may have even written to Walker. At last, the description is up to date. However, a week ago I just decided to buy the book and write a mini-review. I'm just going to say a few words though.

It's a much larger format width/height wise. The answers are placed after the question and they are generally much longer responses than the first edition, which I thought were a bit too brief. These are completely new topics. The references are gone, but I do believe they are on his web site--in spades. There's quite a bit of supplemental info there. To find it his site just Google to "Jearl Walker" flying circus.

I suspect another difference in the book is the questions seem to have gotten further away from common basic physics. For example, in his first book he poses the question why does the cardboard stay in place when you turn over a glass of water with a cardboard over its mouth? Of course, there are many deeper questions in edition one. Nevertheless, his questions are interesting in the second edition. He's punctuated the book with some fun "short stories" like fire-walking. The book strikes me something like the approach of Mad about Physics, which also pulls examples from (a) physics journal in the manner of Walker's first edition. I don't quite see the "conceptual" tone as in Paul Hewitt's book Conceptual Physics, or in Epstein's Thinking Physics. Just different ways of thinking about physics.

This is my favorite book. This is a fantastic collection of hundreds of physics puzzlers, many taken from everyday life. It is full of thought-provoking questions about: superballs, silly putty, tops, and yo-yos; boiling water, dripping faucets, and blowing bubbles; rain, rainbows, snow, lightning, and tornados; bicycles, cars, boats, airplanes, and spaceships; magnets, electricity, radio, and television. It has answers in the back, but it is more fun if you try to figure it out for yourself, and resist looking up the answer. Some of these simple questions are so deep that scientists don't know the answers yet. Literally wonder-full.

I chanced upon this book and now can't put it down. I never realized how little I know about how the world around me works. This asks questions about physics in everyday life, not esoteric particle-accelerator stuff. Absolutely fascinating and the best read I've had in a long time.

These short stories are a strange Surreal landscape of humor and characterization.
There is virtue in this capture of a culture and a time in words.
These are some of the best short stories of this period that I've read.
I'm glad they weren't overworked in to parts of a novel
as is the custom today.

I had to read these stories for one of my classes, and I really liked it. The stories were impeccable and Pirandello was a brilliant story-teller. A book that I could read again and again.

Pirandello captivated my interest through his existential and absurdist writing style. This specific book is a collection of short stories that look at the many emotions eperienced in a human life. Each story was amazing; the character development, the setting, and the climax were profound, for an eight page tale.

Not the author's best works.......2004-01-24

I looked into Pirandello because of his fame as a Nobel Prize winning author. I read "The Late Mattia Pascal" which was OK but nothing special. I came across a book of his short stories titled "The Naked Truth" and I became immediately aware of the power of this author. I realized that he is known for his plays but these stories of the rural Sicilian society were outstanding. I immediately sent for this book to pick up where the others left off. Unfortunately, these stories are not in the same class as the others. They are OK but, after reading the other book, I felt let down. Still there is some good writing in here. I did enjoy "It's not to be Taken Seriously" and several others. However, these stories seemed more of mainland Italian urban society and, thus, lacked the unique flavor of the others. I suggest you read this book and pay special attention to the story "The Fly". It was the one story from the other book that was repeated in this one. In it I believe you will see the type of story I previously found so impressive.

Wonderful slice of 19th century Sicilian life.......2001-12-08

This tiny booklet of short stories offers wonderful vignettes of 19th century life in Sicily. The characters come alive and some of the stories remind me of my late grandparents' tales about villagers in the "old country". Especially nice booklet for people of Sicilian descent.
