3 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Expected.......2007-09-21

After reading "Solace of Open Spaces," I was expecting something more "poetic" with this one. I really liked "Solace" a lot and was rather disappointed with this one. With such a magnificent subject, I would think Ms. Ehrlich could have done much better. The photography is really good, but the writing wasn't up to what I expected, IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful examination of a really weird election.......2002-01-02

With all the drama and soap opera theatrics of the Clinton years, its hard to remember just how unusual and downright bizarre the 1988 Presidential election was. Though it didn't feature any serious attempts at impeachment or Wag the Dog style bombings, 1988 was still the year that saw, briefly, the possibility that both parties would nominate preachers for President, the Willie Horton ads (which have been called "racist" so many times that people tend to forget the fact that the only was they became an issue was because Gov. Dukakis saw no problem with allowing a known dangerous felon to have an unsupervised weekend outside of prison), Dan Quayle, and most strangely, the theory that the pairing of robotic Michael Dukakis and blandly corrupt Lloyd Bentsen would somehow lead to memories of Jack Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Yeah, it was a strange year from the beginning, as this book clearly proves.

As opposed to other campaign histories, Grass Roots covers only one pivotal event in the campaign -- the New Hamsphire primary (which, even if it wasn't admitted at the time, pretty much sealed the nominations of both Bush and Dukakis). As well, instead of concentrating on all the behind-the-scenes strategizing, Grass Roots focuses on the citizen/activists who spent a year crisscrossing New Hampshire in an effort to bring their candidates to victory. Its a nice change from most campaign histories. Instead of supplying analysis of why certain campaigns failed, author Dayton Duncan instead shows us the gritty details that goes into the campaigns at the ground level and one comes away with both an appreciation of the massive effort it takes to run a succesful political campaign and a better feel for what makes for victory and what dooms a cause for defeat.

Duncan concentrates his narrative on a few individuals such as Doug Kidd, a former directionless man whose devotion to the Rev. Pat Robertson's campaign becomes rather touching and inspirational even if Robertson, himself, hardly strikes one as Presidential. We meet Al Rubega, a down-to-earth conservative whose frustration with the stillborn campaign of Jack Kemp reaches truly tragic heights. On the Democratic side, Dan Burnham faces the agony of watching Bruce Babbitt crash and burn as a result of the candidate's lack of charisma while veteran activist Andi Johnson helplessly watches as both Gary Hart and Joe Biden self-destruct in scandal before finally hooking up with the far more honest but just as doomed Paul Simon. Along with these stories, we get insightful views of various Presidential long-shots doing their best to make a name for themselves -- Duncan's account of a day in the life of Republican Pete Du Pont and his attempts to campaign as a common man (let's just say that juggling is involved) are especially funny and strangely sad. All in all, it makes for inspiring reading as both a political history and an account of human drama.

Duncan, it should be said, is admirably upfront about his own political leanings. He is a Democrat and, after the primary, even worked as a press secretary to the Dukakis campaign. So, what is amazing, is that this partisan has managed to write a truly nonbiased account of one of the most partisan presidential elections in recent history. As opposed to so-called objective journalists (Jack Germond and Jules Whitcover, I'm looking in your direction), Duncan treats all the candidates and their campaigns fairly and, even when writing about the Republicans that he surely disagrees with, Duncan never resorts to easy stereotypes. Everyone is allowed to present their case and everyone is treated with respect. What a concept!

Every post-election year, it seems that we are flooded with books that claim to give an inside account of the previous election and usually they dissapoint by either engaging in the pompous rhetoric of Teddy White's later books or the surly partisan grumpiness that seems to have afflicted Germond and Whitcover (who always seemed to be saying, "How could the rest of you vote differently from us!?") Duncan's book, however, reminds us why so many people have devoted their lives to politics. It reminds us that politics -- even today -- can still be an exhilirating way for a citizen to make his voice heard. And for that -- as well as giving as a wonderful record of really weird election -- he is to be commended and his book treasured.

5 out of 5 stars A great book about our First in the Nation Primary!.......1998-11-11

Andi Johnson of Cheshire County, New Hampshire will tell you that NH takes their presidential politics seriously. You will find well educated voters and activists as they work hard to let people know their candidate can beat the other guy best. Dayton follows several local activists during the First in the Nation primary in Cheshire County, NH. You will learn what makes them tick and why they feel they are going to win: who's it gonna be: Senator Paul Simon (D-IL) or former Massachusetts Governor Mike Dukakis against George Bush or Pat Robertson...? Enjoy a good read and learn history in the making.

In this first volume, Ginji comes back to life as a penguin. He's still a sentient being, and he thinks like his former self, but there's the problem of those pesky wings, the funny beak, and the awkward noises he makes. His task? 5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE COOLEST MANGA EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-23

Alright, so I've been reading manga for a while now, and of course you get some great stuff in this genre, and of course you get some stereotypes. This is flat out, the greatest manga of all time. I've finished the first three, and can't wait for the next one. Alright, I'm a 27 year old male, so don't think it's a kiddie thing... but this book just rocks. It's got some really heartfelt romance (some a la sappy manga style-- so what???) and it's got great action... and it contains THE most laugh-out-loud hilariously funny sequences ever. I would feel almost embarrased to read it in public because it makes me laugh so much... And, hell, it's about a boxing penguin who is the reincarnation of a guy who just fell in love with a girl at first sight... only to be snatched away before they even had their first date. That part kinda reminds me of Meet Joe Black.... Ahh, but I ramble. If you like any of the following: penguins, romantic elements that aren't too girly and sappy (but I'm sure they'd appreciate it too), Straight up AWESOME and original humor, if you want something different in your stereotypical manga or stereotypical life, if you ever wanted to see Rocky remade as a Penguin.... GO OUT NOW AND BUY THIS!!!!!! you will love it... I can read this book over and over... I can read it once and then pick it up and read it all over again, And feel completely immersed in the beauty and genius of Gin-Chan!!!!!

                5 out of 5 stars Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-09-04

I loved Tuxedo Gin. I mean it was funny about the whole reborn as a penguin. I liked it and I read it over and over again. I think anyone will enjoy this manga! My rating A+++++++++++.

5 out of 5 stars Great little magna for penguin lovers.......2004-03-08

Like the Seattle reviewer, I also only bought the book because I am a big penguin fan. The book starts off slows, and it is awkward as a westerner to read it right-to-left style, but it is worth it. The subtle comedy and the nifty drama makes it a can't-put-down book. Seeing a penguin try martial art moves, or the varios sprinkling of penguin trivia, just makes it the perfect magna for penguin lovers.

A must have if you love penguins.

5 out of 5 stars Better than most.......2003-12-31

This manga is surprisingly good, containing a good mix of comedy and romance.

                Graphic: 5/5, Crisp and Clean
Storyline: 4.5/5, Excellent mix of Comedy and Romance - I suppose it's heartfelt if you're a male
Characters: 4.5/5, a bit static at time and each has simple motives, but the motives help in each storyline and you gain a better feel about the characters with each story.

Overall: 4.9/5 - One of my top ten favorite mangas.

5 out of 5 stars extremely underestimated manga.......2003-10-31

so... viz is FINALLY coming out with a whole line of new titles? Interesting... Basically, this was my first and only thought when I found this out. And when I saw that the new manga line up consisted of a 'girl-meets-penguin?' romance, I thought it was simply the most ridiculous thing ever. Out of all the good manga that has yet to be published... they bring something like this?

However, like aways, looks can be deceiving. I read a sample chapter from the viz manga sampler book and was immediately sucked into the storyline. Tuxedo Gin is surprisingly really, really good! Yeah, it looks lame. That's what I thought too, but this book is pretty darn funny and interesting. Trust me. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Unless you're a mathematician, the chances of you reading any novels about geometry are probably slender. But if you read only two in your life, these are the ones. Taken together, they form a couple of accessible and charming explanations of geometry and physics for the curious non-mathematician. Flatland, which is also available under separate cover, was published in 1880 and imagines a two-dimensional world inhabited by sentient geometric shapes who think their planar world is all there is. But one Flatlander, a Square, discovers the existence of a third dimension and the limits of his world's assumptions about reality and comes to understand the confusing problem of higher dimensions. The book is also quite a funny satire on society and class distinctions of Victorian England. The further mathematical fantasy, Sphereland, published 60 years later, revisits the world of Flatland in time to explore the mind-bending theories created by Albert Einstein, whose work so completely altered the scientific understanding of space, time, and matter. Among Einstein's many challenges to common sense were the ideas of curved space, an expanding universe and the fact that light does not travel in a straight line. Without use of the mathematical formulae that bar most non-scientists from an understanding of Einstein's theories, Sphereland gives lay readers ways to start comprehending these confusing but fundamental questions of our reality.

An odd, amusing and still provocative fantasy. The narrator is a Square who lives in a world of two dimensions, and whose vision of a third gets him into grave trouble with the authorities.

                    Download Description

Flatland is about a two-dimensional world in which geometric shpates are the main charaters. The Square is the narrator of the book and he tells of his world and his fantastic contact with the three dimensional world. Mildly amusing and though provoking, a wonderful read for everyone! This book is easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. This eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable.

Flat is an exercise in science fiction geometry, if you like. It shows a denizen of a 2 dimensional world seeing what it would be like to exist in higher dimensions. An interesting mathematical and philosophical exercise. Some will definitely find this very odd, and rather quirky. If you don't know what a dimension means in this sense, give it a miss.

4 out of 5 stars A Valuable Idea for Science and Math Teachers.......2007-08-02

Abbott, the author, has the reader imagine three-dimensional structures from a distant horizontal perspective. The third dimension becomes unimportant, and can be dispensed with completely. Taking this further, we are left with a "society" of circles, triangles, and other 2-D geometric figures, all living in Flatland.

As a science and math teacher, I found this book an inspiration for thought-provoking questions, such as: How would you describe the sphere to someone living in Lineland or Flatland? How, for that matter, would you communicate the very concept of thickness to someone living in Flatland? Or volume?

Visualize a sphere crossing Flatland. It starts as a point, then a circle of expanding diameter, then a circle of decreasing diameter, then a point, and then finally nothing. Other 3-D figures can be visualized in comparable manner. The possibilities are endless!

This book is such a great tool. I've used it for 10 years and it still gets my students excited about dimensions. They can't believe it was written over one hundred years ago and still, as they say, "blows their minds!"

This book at first is very dense. But once you get used to the writing style it becomes a great tool for thinking about perception. I especially like the section on shading and how that can determine what it is you are looking at. It is a short book but it does take a little a time to get through. Overall, it is a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Followup For Flatland.......2005-03-29

Once reading the book Flatland, I thought the world of Flatland could not get much better. Then I read Sphereland. It is written in modern English, which is slightly easier to understand than the already not-too-hard Victorian style of Flatland. The book elaborates on what Abbot left out in Flatland, based on new discoveries coming mostly from Einstein since 1880, when Flatland was first published. The style of writing is similar to that of Flatland and amusing. There is a short yet good summary in the beginning of the volume of the Flatland world, just in case you did not read it, read it long ago, or just did not understand a few things about it. As in Flatland, the concepts are easy to understand, even for a high school student. You will find that the theories of dimensions are not too complex if you did not understand them before. It is also a short read. As in Flatland, there are a few diagrams to help you understand a concept being conveyed. The book does not present complex mathematical formulas; actually, it presents none at all. I thought that this book was very interesting, even if you are not interested in mathematics or dimensional theory.

5 out of 5 stars Right up there with Flatland.......2001-08-01

Thanks to whoever conceived the idea of publishing a combined version of Flatland and Sphereland - I would probably have never read this book otherwise - its under-known and under-rated. As a satire, Flatland is arguably better, but as a popular math / physics book, I find Spherland of a much higher quality. I would go so far as to say that there is no better way to understand conceptually the notion of a curved space than to read Burger's analogy. Get it before it goes out of print!

4 out of 5 stars A worthy extension of the classic Flatland.......2001-05-19

In my opinion, the best popular mathematics book ever written is "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions" by Edwin A. Abbot. Designed to be as much a satire on nineteenth century British society as a book on spatial dimensions, I have seen excerpts from it in several books on multi-dimensional space. This book opens with an excerpt from Flatland, and then moves on to describe how the universe of the Flatlanders is changing due to the universal expansion of their living surface.
The social commentary continues in "Sphereland" as newborns are killed simply because their parents prefer large angles in their shapes. Dogs are either of mongrel or pedigree stock depending on which mirror image they are. Finally, Burger also satirizes the intellectual segment, when the findings of the knowledgeable experimentalist are almost rejected out of hand as they do not conform to current physical theories. The sphere continues to make periodic appearances in "Sphereland", but it is also subject to emotional frailty, becoming quite angry at some of the suggestions the humble Flatlanders make about the world he inhabits.
While it does not match the high quality of Flatland, Sphereland is still an excellent description of the differences in the properties of spaces as additional dimensions are added. Being restricted to three dimensions, humans can only conceive of space with more than three dimensions with mathematics or by analogy. Both are used here and it is done well without resort to sophisticated mathematics. The satire also is of a high quality, although it must be read with an eye to the fact that it is an extension of the social commentary of Abbot. He was a strong advocate for the emancipation of women, working very hard to promote womens rights, and Flatland was only one part of that struggle.
Sphereland is a worthy sequel to a book that sets the standard for popular mathematics and social commentary. As long as you read it as that, it will be very instructive and amusing.

I gave this volume to a friend who had no experience of reading poetry (since school, that is), and had asked me what sort of poems he could start with. I pointed out a couple of poems that I thought were highlights, and wished him good luck. When I met up with him a week later, he burst into excited praise for the book. He'd started on the poems I had suggested, and rapidly proceeded to read the whole collection, several times over.
I quite agree with his response - in my early 20s this was one of the books that got me excited in contemporary poets and poetry. While Walcott is not foremost an experimentalist - and he might at odd moments almost be thought a sentimentalist - his sheer joy of craft and wordsmithing is a beautiful, beautiful thing to behold. This book is one of those things that can remind you why life is worth living. It's that good.

                        Book Description

When Darwin published his Origins of Species in 1859, he initiated a debate about the origin of human life and the role of God in human affairs scarcely equalled in world history. Smout traces the response of Biblical creationists to Darwinian evolutionists. Looking carefully at the stories told and the tactics used by both sides, he analyzes all available accounts of the original debate culminating in the 1860 Huxley/Wilberforce debate, the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial, and the 1981 Arkansas Creation-Science Trial. Professor Smout argues that both sides in the controversy use various language strategies to persuade the culture as a whole to see the world that they see and to enact their position as public policy. As Smout illustrates, the problem is that both sides rely on an inadequate conception of language as a namer of timeless realities rather than as an instrument used by human communities to achieve their goals. He attempts to articulate a better view of language and to show how it might help solve intractable arguments such as this. He argues that we should see language as a tool that shapes what we see, and definitions of terms as political acts rather than statements of fact made by disciplinary experts. An important analysis for students and scholars in rhetoric, history, religion, and sociology.
