Book Description
Peter Kaminsky, one of the premier experts on fly-fishing, offers his unique worldview to fishermen and women everywhere in this fifth meaning of life guidebook. As any true fly fisherman knows, fly-fishing is more than a sport. Its an affirmation of life. This lyrical book muses on the philosophy of fly-fishing, rather than the hook and ballet aspect of the sport. Kaminsky calls up the greats of fly-fishing lore and his own profound experiences of early mornings, damp clothes, exuberant catches and releases, and peace. During the hardest times, times when the world seems all wrong, he fly fishes. In these 15 pieces, readers will be transported to another more joyful place where the bass and trout whisper a philosophy of life that makes sense.

Writing and Reporting News.......2006-03-14
Helps understand the fundamentals of writing and reporting in a real live situation. An extreme help for beginner journalists or writers.
Great book for a beginner like me.......2005-10-05
This book is a required text for a journalism class I'm taking at a junior college. It is extremely well written, and the best part is, it's written in simple terms. As a beginner, I'm finding the information extremely helpful. I haven't looked at the CD yet.
Good Textbook.......2003-12-17
As a student using this textbook, I have found that Rich is clear and direct in her instructions and gives examples that are easy to understand and follow. This is a must-have for any novice in journalism or a student learning to write for print journalism.
A Great Way to Teach Writing.......2000-03-28
I started using this text in my beginning reporting and writing classes a year ago. It was a strange experience: My students actually loved a textbook! I think that because this text does a good job of getting over the touchy-feely parts of treating the writing and editing processes as coaching processes, and shows how it's actually done. My students were able to convert her perspectives into some good work during our one-semester course. I'll be using this book again for some time to come.
Customer Reviews:
one of the better books on mecha ive seen in some time.......2003-12-13
well i took a chance on this book , i read a review in sketch magazine about this book , and decided to check it out , as i already own two other books that were decent , but not amazing.
i figured for the price.. if i didnt like it , i could just return it. well i have to say this book took me by suprise , it is a very good beginner to intermediate book , especially for the price.it gives alot of good pictures of the various body parts that make up a mech. this book in combination with How to draw manga : giant robots by hikaru hayashi , and mecha mania by christopher hart will have you drawing uber cool mechs in no time. if you are more advanced then this isnt the book for you. if you are just starting out , then i highly recommend this title. chapters are : before you begin drawing , drawing the head , body , arms , legs , and variety of robot design. it even comes with 4 sheets (of pre ruled non repro blue 1 ply) art boards for you to put your designs on . i can also recomend Let's Draw Manga: Transforming Robots by yasuhiro nitta if you want to draw transforming mecha.

Casual pig watchers and porcinologists alike are sure to learn something new on every page.
Customer Reviews:
Piggelicious.......2006-06-10
This book is absolutely delightful! Few of us are aware how rich and varied our farm yard animal's history is. This is a great book for adults and kids alike. It is full of facts and also has small fun tidbits of "useless" (if there is such a thing)information that tickles your funny bone.
Oink!!.......2003-04-07
This is a book that goes hog-wild with descriptions of twenty-four varieties of domesticated pig and thirteen of their wild relatives. It is larded with many interesting and important facts about the development of today's common breeds. Although the author does ham it up with some of his observations, he has succeeded in fashioning a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
Great book for those who admire the noble pig!.......2001-07-17
This book is delightful...for those of us who are infatuated with these bristly critters, it gives all the loose-end info that the other books don't. From tail-curling descriptions to grunt analysis, this book brings home the bacon. It included pig folk sayings, poems, pig songs, pig superstitions.. and the piggy illustrations were extremely detailed and captivating, if you adore porkers! It's a fun book to page through, and is chock full of obscure piggy facts that you would never find anywhere else, such as pig trails of past times, or the four varieties of spam. I am sure that any pig lover would be perusing through it as fast as I did.

Good book from a great series.......2005-08-20
I purchased this book as a gift for an animal enthusist after previously purchasing a different one from the same Animal World series. The receiver of the book was extremely happy with it. It has amazing pictures and very interesting information. The only small complaint I got was the more than half of the book was about domestic pigs. However, the stunning pictures and info on the wild boars definitely makes up for it.

Rabbits, Squirrels and Chipmunks.......2005-08-10
Recently, while on vacation in TN, I bought "Caterpillars, Bugs and Butterflies" for my 5 year old granddaughter. This is another in this series of Take-Along-Guide books. She absolutely loves that book so I decided to buy 4 more, among which was "Rabbits, Squirrels and Chipmunks". This book explains what the animal looks like, what it eats and where to find it. There's also a few pages of things to make i.e. "Hang a squirrel nut-ball"! This book is great for older children, but my 5 year old granddaughter loves them all. I'm sure I'll be ordering the rest in the series. I'd say they are wonderful books to have on hand.
Excellent learning tool!.......2001-01-23
I purchased 5 books of this series for my five year old daughter for Christmas, as she wanted a "field guide" like her older sisters when exploring our 45 acres of woods. After reviewing these books before giving them, we decided to use them as part of our science program for our home school. These books have bright and colorful pictures, short accurate explanations of the animal, their habitat, eating habits, and even some of the popular anecdotes that go along with the animal. It has the appropriate warning for studying certain animals. What we enjoy most is that many of these animals can be found in our back yard to furthur study. Each book deals with three types of animal, such as Rabbits, Squirrels, and Chipmunks. They are separated into sections dealing with each type. At the end of the section is a wonderful hands-on project the child can basically do on their own within the recommended age group (9-12) or with some assistance for a younger age group like my daughter. (Such as making a hanging squirrel nut ball using peanut butter, nuts and seeds) My 5 year old begs us to read these books to her and loves the projects. I highly recommend this book and others in the series for those who want their children to learn about nature and how to respect it.

Excellent source on ferrets!.......2001-05-26
First of all, let me say what a big help this was to me. It pratically has sections on everything you need to know about ferrets; getting your house ferret-proof, how to bathe them, how to tell if they have an illness, and much more. This book is great for ferret owners and soon-to-be ferret owners. It is a must-have, and I highly recommend you buy it. Trust me, this is bool very helpful.

Customer Reviews:
Inspiring and enchanting!.......2002-04-09
I have used this delightful book for reference and inspiration countless times since buying it several years ago. It's paid for itself and then some! Tussie-mussies never fail to provide a gracious touch to the giving of flowers. Anyone can merely present flowers, but to customize the bouquet to the recipient or occasion? Truly impressive and touching! I once attended a luncheon honoring a well-known philanthropist. The hostess spent a fortune on catering for the event and decorated the banquet table with an enormous [$] floral arrangement of spring flowers. The well-traveled multimillionairess was cordial but a trifle bored (been there/done that)until I presented my tussie-mussie, assembled just for her, with a hand-lettered scroll listing the flowers and their definitions. She was astonished and fascinated. That's all she talked about afterwards--the table arrangement could have been dandilions and crab grass. Even if you don't actually make up a tussie-mussie from real flowers, Laufer's book has other terrific uses. I used it to design a bouquet in watercolors for my aunt's memorial service program. You will relish this book!
Tussie Mussies!.......2000-01-21
My friend and I used this book as a source for a program for my garden club. We did this in January when our gardens were bare, or so we thought. After looking, we were able to find lots of things that were useful as well as meaningful. With a few dollars worth of flowers from the grocery store we made several examples from the book (with a few substitutions). We were delighted at how beautifully they turned out. I talked about the language of flowers and then showed everybody our samples. We had assembled a variety of ingredients and then each of our 15 members created her own Tussie Mussie. Each one turned out differently and each was charming. I cannot wait for a reason to make another one. We had a hoot of a time. My only complaint with the book was that there were not enough sources of materials such as holders, etc. Thank you for such a beautiful book.
Excellent information and a wonderful pictorial book........1999-01-12
I have read this book and use it as a ref guide in our work shop. We manufacture tussies. The only wrong thing about this book is it does not have a glossery of where one can purchase the things they would need to make these wonderful tussies. As in WHERE could you purchase the holders? or who makes holders like this? Also where can you purchase special ribbons. and so on. We make these as our job, but for the home garden person who perhaps would like to dabble into this as a gift making idea will not find much in the way of suppliers. Anyone can use lace and doilies, but the real EYECATCHERS are the hand casted resin containers! Too bad they didnt say or give a list of suppliers. Other Than that.... it is a well photographed book. Book Description
Tussie-Mussies reacquaints readers with the complex and delightful language of flowers, and the art of making them speak through Victorian "talking bouquets" called tussie-mussies. Now Tussie-Mussies is available in a stunning paperback edition.
A celebration of craft, lore, and language, Tussie-Mussies is a full-color guide to tussie-mussies, how to make them, and how the symbolic meanings of flowers and herbs have developed over the centuries. Roses that are red mean only one thing-Love-while a yellow rose may range from Friendship to Jealousy. Daisies are for Innocence, ivy for Fidelity, rosemary for Remembrance. Then comes the delightful task of arranging individual flowers and herbs together to compose a specific message to a friend or loved one. A floral poet, Geraldine Laufer shows how to make 60 bouquets-tussie-mussies to declare Ardent Love, say Happy Birthday, celebrate a Newborn, mark an Anniversary, honor a Mentor, admit an Infatuation, or even announce a Bitter Rivalry. Indeed, any sentiment can be crafted with a few blooms, woolen yarn, and scissors.

Flowers Speak.......2007-07-09
Flowers can say all kinds of things: "I love you"; "How could you?!"; "Let's get married"; "Happy Birthday"; just about anything. I orginally got this book for some research on Victorian customs and realized it can still be used today. This book goes way past just pretty pictures, though there are dozens of ideas for Tussie Mussies to give to friends and family. There is a history of Tussie Mussies and a Step by Step guide to making a Tussie Mussie in the front, and -- my personal favourite -- TWO glossaries, a Vocabulary of Flowers and an Index of Sentiments. For research or fun, this is definitely the book to have.
Interesting - Very sweet.......2001-06-07
This is a very charming book with lots of historical facts as well as beautiful pictures and drawings. The history of the talking bouquet is quite interesting, being influenced from several different countries. Lots of specific bouquets are pictured and labeled, including bouquet examples for "Admiring a Creative Talent", "Embarking on a New Adventure", "First Day in a New School/Job/City", and "Support During a Difficult Divorce" to name a few. There are several dozen more. The step-by-step guide to making these bouquets were easy to follow. A wonderful gift book.
Beautifully done - tons of info and gorgeous photographs.......2000-04-22
This book is chock full of photographs not only of the gorgeous tussies it teaches you how to make, but of the actual process of making them. Very clear and concise directions that are easy to follow for the beginner and give the experienced flower lover something to build on.
I hope this book brings back a bit of the romance of tussies from bygone days - every man who has a woman in his life should surprise her with flowers with meaning and not more insipid scentless hothouse roses. This is a great guide.

Shifra Horn, the wife an Israeli diplomat, provides a colorful, if somewhat generalized, account of her five years in Japan. A teacher of Hebrew, Ms. Horn's scrupulous relationships with her students stand in contrast to many of her shocking observations, including the country's seemingly endless fascination with pornography, the affordability and availability of sex-change operations, dinners that cost $1,000, computerized toilets, and sex clubs that allow audience to join in with the performers. Though her descriptions will surprise those unfamiliar with Japanese culture, Ms. Horn often neglects comment on the rich traditions and subtleties of her adopted home in exchange for indiscriminate stereotypes and tabloid-style hype.
Customer Reviews:
A nice enough read.......2004-09-13
Hello! I am the translator of this book and the reviewer is right, I am not familiar with the Japanese language; it woudl be nice if I were, but not really essential, since I translate from Hebrew to English. I transliterated the Japanese words from Hebrew and the author - who claims a deep and expert knowledge of all things Japanese - corrected them into what she assured me was the correct, phonetic English spelling.
My sincere apologies for any offence caused.
Nearsighted Ethnocentrism at its Worst.......2004-06-02
It is sad when people with a similar background as yours make such unaccurate, generalized criticisms of cultures they didn't even try to understand. After living in Japan myself, I became tired with foreigners always trying to point out how strange Japan is without realizing that their own cultures also have their own weirdnesses.
A sad misinterpretation of Japan.......2004-06-01
More than merely stereotypical and incorrect, this book and books like it are actually dangerous to genuine understanding between cultures. I'm afraid the "Japan" Ms. Horn lived in for five years doesn't actually exist; however, the Japan she has fabricated for this book is so stereotypically perfect that she might have written it without spending even one afternoon in the country. It is blatently obvious that Ms. Horn doesn't speak a word of Japanese and was never able to break the barrier between "us and them". I don't know why some people will try to explain a culture without understanding it themselves, but it always saddens me when these deep misinterpretations are taken by others as fact. It's not difficult to mock a culture you don't understand, but it is terribly irresponsible in today's global society. I wonder if Ms. Horn would appreciate the trivialization of her own cultute in such a manner. I could site specific errors in the book, but that would take another book. If you wish to understand Japan leave this book on the shelf.
Stereotypical, Disapponting.......2003-12-17
I'll be taking this one back to the book store to get my money back. I've acquired a large circle of Japanese friends and visited the country several times, but I cannot seem to develop the subdued sense of contempt this author has for the culture. For example, she complains that there is no place for vegetarians to dine out, then goes into an extended anecdote about eating at a rare Buddist vegetarian restaurant. GET USED TO IT. Japan serves the masses, not the shifting whims of yuppie liberals from the West.
I was also put off by the author's sweeping (and wrong) generalizations. For example, she claims that Japanese people love their food to be fresh (very true) and all the better if it's raw. Poppycock. I know many Japanese who cannot stand sushi or raw seafood. Most people are not aware that sushi and sashimi are semi-delicacies in Japan and are quite expensive. American pop-culture is responsible for the proliferation of sushi restaurants in the West. Japanese people do not eat raw fish like they scarf down rice.
I was also disappointed that the author seemed to harp on the sex culture of Japan as totally depraved, rather than simply lacking the taboos and inhibitions of the beaten down Western societies. Newsflash: the vast majority of Japanese do not buy used underwear out of vending machines or attend public sex-hibitions. There is simply an accomodation of all lifesyles (if a profit can be made). By the way, there are almost no mixed-sex public baths left in Japan. The author talks about them like there's one next to every McDonalds.
I really love reading anecodotal accounts of gaikokujin (foreign persons) in Japan. The author even manages to present some amusing and interesting stories. However, the feeling I get when reading this book is an uncomfortable sense of having to defend what I know to be true about Japan against a frank, but also almost contemptuous distrust and distaste for the culture of the far East. I don't have a right to not be offended by someone else's opinion, but when the author claims to love Japan, then writes ten pages about how bizzare and depraved her people are, I cannot help but call her bluff.
Japan Over-generalized.......2003-01-14
I have to say that I was sorely disappointed in Ms. Horn's oversimplication of a very complex society. I lived in Japan for 11 years and am married to a Japanese man. Although she states that she has the utmost respect for the Japanese people, it is not reflected in her words.
I agree with the other readers that a more detailed account of her life as a Jewish woman/diplomat would have been a much more interesting read.
Finally, the horrible spelling of all things Japanese was unbearable and at times - believe it or not - made it impossible to understand what the author was referring to.
