Excellent read!.......2007-06-06
I read this to my children over eight years ago and to this day my son still remembers the spirit and strength of these voyageurs. At the time we were living in another country, experiencing a taste of what it is like to mix cultures. The book opened new windows of thought for us; shaping inclusive attitudes through a culture we never knew existed. Now at 16, this same son also has renewed appreciation for the physical stamina of these canoing men as he too is learning to ply a canoe in less challenging waters!
Waste of paper.......2004-04-29
This book is a waste of paper and simply repeating the old English racist slurs against French-Canadians. Don't waste your money on this garbage.
Adventure and romance appropriate for teens.......2000-06-01
This book is one you'll want your teenage son to read and relate to. He'll learn such values as hard work, being dependable and cheerful, fortitude, and saving yourself for the right person.
Two of my favorite quotes from this book are: "Each word must be distinct. It is a courtesy to speak so one can be understood; it is an art so to sing." (The father speaking to the protagonist.)
"He who will not settle for second best but waits for the best will find it waiting for him... Love must be all or it is nothing."
There is plenty of adventure and action in this uplifting book. How knows, it may even kindle a desire to learn French or to go canoeing!

Beautifully Illustrated.......2007-10-05
We purchased this book and met the illustrator, David Geister, at a signing in DePere, WI. He is a wonderfully animated man, and brought the book to life before our eyes. The story is well written, richly illustrated, and has become a "regular" with our seven year old son. This book is an excellent way to bring history and lore to your family.
The Voyageurs Paddle.......2007-09-27
I have enjoyed all the books written and illustrated by this duo, the story is so interesting that you keep wanting to keep reading it, but the artwork side tracks you because its so beautiful and interesting to look at. Highly recommended for anyone.
Illustrations that take you INTO the story........2007-09-24
David's knack for creating gorgeous illustrations that pull you deeply into the wonderfully-written story make all of his books a must-have for any personal library. This book is no exception!
Paddle Review.......2007-09-24
This is a beautiful book and another great story in the series. My kids love all of these books and Mr. Dave Geister's artwork really resonates with children's interest. They study the artwork and notice the details of all the images. I highly recommend this book if you value history and a quality story for all ages. It is very developmentally geared for preschoolers and young children. Very recommended as a parent. A+

A Favorite from Childhood.......2000-03-27
This compelling historic fiction tells the story of Danny O'Hara, an American teen in pre-state Michigan. The British are at war with the French, and Native American tribes are allied variously with each. He leaves home near Fort Detroit for adventure with his voyageur friend/boss, Jacques LeBlanc, and finds it at Michilimackinac, the fort at the tip of the lower peninsula. To survive in the ever-growing atmosphere of war, Danny hides his red hair and freckles with the aide of his French and Native American friends. After re-reading this book as an adult it's too bad that some of the writing regarding Native Americans is stereotypical and demeaning; however, the overall theme of people living together in peace regardless of their heritage is a heartening one in this coming-of-age adventure.

Elementary particles for the, um, million.......2004-11-28
This is a pretty good book, but I'm still trying to work out just what audience it is best suited for.
How about a bright high school freshman, one who hasn't taken physics or even advanced algebra yet? Or perhaps someone a bit older who never took much mathematics. This book really does not require much (if any) math.
That might be good. Such a person might want to know about elementary particles. They're fascinating. And they are the building blocks of matter.
The book starts with an explanation of what particles are, a little history of particle physics, and (here's what a high school student might want to know) some description of what it is like to become a particle physicist: you go to college, you go to graduate school, you become a post-doc, you stay at a university, where you work on experiments or do theory, or maybe you just give up and get a job on Wall Street.
Then there is a description of the standard model, with the quantum numbers for the particles we know about. The Higgs boson is added to the list, even though it has not been discovered. And there is a discussion of high energy experiments, and plenty about that Higgs boson.
And there's material about supersymmetry and a little about cosmology.
There are a couple of appendices. One has a few pages on Feynman diagrams. Okay, that may confuse some readers but it is just an appendix. I'd leave it in. Another mentions internal symmetries. Here, I think some diagrams showing a few SU(3) multiplets wouldn't have hurt, but I guess Kane figured that telling about the families of leptons and quarks was enough.
In short, it is a good choice for the audience I mentioned. I just wish it had a little more in it. What's there gives a reader a good idea about why some folks find so much beauty and fascination in this field.
Boring.......2004-05-01
I've read several popular physics books, and I think this one was the worst. I hoped the followup "Supersymmetry" would be better. I think I made it through the first chapter before putting it down for good. Try Elegant Universe or one of Stephen Hawking's books instead.
Great Book For Interested Physics Students.......2002-12-28
When reading books about Chemistry or Physics, the level of depth is usually to the electron, proton, neutron, and there is usually some mention of quarks and antimatter and dark matter, but with no explanation of where these ideas are coming from. This book gives a good, nonmathematical description of the Standard Theory (Model) of particle physics, which gives a good account of what particles are known, how forces are treated using particles called Bosons. The books will answer any questions about what is known, but without proofs. I plan to study physics as an undergrad, and probably grad too, and have always been attracted to learning about the fundamental particles. This book was very satisfying for me, and will be for other interested students. Kane provides information about not only the standard theory, but also the facilities where research is done, where the field is going, and what a future student can expect. A quick read and definitely worth the time!
A lucid and precise account of the Standard Model........2002-08-20
This is specifically a book on the standard model of particle physics. Gordon Kane doesn't digress to other areas of physics and keeps himself doggedly to the subject. This in a way keeps the book brief and makes it more of a summary than a detailed treatment of the standard model.
So readers curious about the ultimate building blocks of matter (quarks and leptons) and the interactions between them (gauge bosons) will definitely benefit from this book. Kane also gives a brief account of the different accelerators and colliders engaged in testing the standard model and detecting the various quarks, leptons and bosons as predicted by the standard model(which until now has come out with flying colors, making it one of the most successful, well tested and mathematically rigorous theories yet). Kane also discusses the Higgs mechanism, which is responsible for imparting mass to the particles. This is still an active research area and the race is still on to detect the Higgs boson, which is a quantum of the Higgs field - in the bigger colliders such as the Tevatron collider in Fermilab and the LEP in CERN. If the results are still negative then the focus will shift to the giant Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in CERN which will start operating in 2005. Other areas of discussion in this book is the extended model of the Standard Theory like supersymmetric standard theory, CP violation, dark matter, baryon asymmetry etc...
Readers will greatly benefit if they could visit this web site - http://particleadventure.org/particleadventure/index.html - which I think provides a great and excellent introduction to the standard model and will complement "the particle garden". Also recommended is John Gribbin's - "Q is for Quantum - an encyclopedia of particle physics", which will definitely prove to be an invaluable source for anything and everything you wanted to know about particle physics.
The book is a bit dated(1996) and lacks charts and particle interactions equations which, I think, should have been provided appropriately to help the readers get a more better grasp on the subject and make it a more enjoyable learning experience. Apart from this grievance, Kane does a pretty good job of teaching and explaining the wonderful and complex world of particle physics.
Clear and Concise.......2001-04-22
This is a very good book both for the layman and for physics undergraduate majors such as myself who have forgotten most of what they learned 20 years ago. In addition...without using any sophisticated math it explains basic concepts of particle physics and also presents the latest theories and discoveries. It is certainly too basic for current graduate level physics students, but for the overwhelming majority of people this book gives a wonderful overview of a fascinating field of science. Those with any curiosity concerning physics should enjoy this book.

Book Description
`I am simply steeped in Miss Braddon' Alfred Lord Tennyson Tennyson was not the only Victorian reader to be captivated by Mary Elizabeth Braddon's fiction. While still in her mid-twenties, Braddon scored two remarkable hits with the sensational Lady Audley's Secret and Aurora Floyd. John Marchmont's Legacy deserves to take its place alongside them for a plot charged with drama and mystery, its eerie atmosphere and, above all, its depiction of an extraordinary woman. In remote Lincolnshire, `fenny, misty, and flat always', Olivia Arundel can find no outlet for either her intellectual abilities or her fierce passions, but is compelled to look on as the man she loves has thoughts only for a woman whose gifts are vastly inferior to her own. Braddon once declared that Wilkie Collins, the master of the `sensation novel', was `asssuredly my literary father'; she herself has the same skill in weaving a story of mystery, conspiracy, menace and violence, while the energy and vivacity of her narrative are all her own.
Customer Reviews:
Not her best effort but, not horrible either.......................2003-06-30
I will have to agree that this is NOT Braddon's best work. However, it is not as bad as some of the other reviewers make it out to be. The biggest fault is that the story is quite slow to get going. If the reader can hang on and make it through about a third of the story, they will be rewarded with what we normally expect in sensation fiction. I was also somewhat put off by the little synopsis on the back of the book. It is very misleading. There is a lot more to the plot than what that little blurb suggests.
If you are new to Braddon, I would suggest starting with some of her other titles such as The Trail of The Serpent or Aurora Floyd.
a rather unsensational 'sensation' novel.........2002-05-30
During the 1860s Wilkie Collins, with his terrific The Woman In White, started the period of 'sensation' novels. These novels are rather over-the-type, almost slapstick-like mystery stories. Mary Elizabeth Braddon followed with her own flavor of sensation novels. While I love many of Wilkie Collins novels I was disappointed with Braddon's most famous work, Lady Audley's Secret. But when I ran into a copy of John Marchmont's Legacy I thought I'd give Ms Braddon a try. Was I disappointed? Well...
Firstly, the story is a typical Victorian era melodrama: family members squabbling over an inheritance, with certain members stopping at nothing to become rich. Ms Braddon does do a good job on the characterizations, and the ultimate mystery does build up to a good conclusion. The book is nicely structured (..unlike Lady Audley's Secret, where we find the story basically ending 100 pages from the finish).
However Ms Braddon is simply not a very good writer. Her prose is weak, especially compared to Wilkie Collins. Every third sentence ends with an exclamation point, which must be Ms Braddon's way of indicating high drama (?).
Bottom line: a unremarkable slice of Victorian literary history. Certainly not terrible, but nonetheless a far cry from Wilkie Collins material.
IMO It's Bad.......2001-03-04
I got here after getting to Collins, after going through Dickens. This is an awful book, in my humble opinion. Why has it been resurrected? (Rhetorical) If you love Dickens, maybe you found Collins, and if you love Collins, then you and I are relevantly similar, so let me tell you, don't bother with this insipid tripe, or with "Doctor's Wife" for that matter. Unless you are simply obligated, because you are a gendered wannabe English professor, in some forsaken place, poor you.
Victorian sensation.......2000-03-28
M E Braddon was one of the most prolific Sensation novellists of the nineteenth century. Her popularity as a novellist of the suspenseful, shocking and unexpected was surpassed only by Wilkie Collins (The Moonstone; The Woman in White). The central character in "John Marchmont's legacy" is Olivia Marchmont, a woman driven by intense passions, and unable to accept that the man she loves cannot return her feelings. Olivia is a wonderful portrait of a woman stifled by the conventions of Victorian society and the limited scope for a woman of intelligence and ambition. Her thwarted passions lead her to become involved with a true villain who will do anything to accomplish his wicked designs. This is a great melodrama with all the elements of a true Sensation novel- handsome hero; delicate, virtuous heroine- but also a truly unique character in Olivia.
