            Book Description

Snoopy sits atop his dog house, banging out stories on a manual typewriter. Usually they begin "It was a dark and stormy night..." Always they're rejected. In Snoopy's Guide to the Writing Life--a wonderful gift for writers--a roundup of 30 famous writers and entertainers respond in short essays to their favorite Snoopy "at the typewriter" strip.

Each essay focuses on how the strip presents an aspect of writing life--getting started, getting rejected, searching for new ideas, and more--everything that beginning and professional writers deal with on a daily basis.

The essays are light and sometimes humorous, but all of them offer insight and inspiration for writers working at any level. The book presents a powerful lineup of contributors, including:

Ray Bradbury William F. Buckley, Jr. Julia Child Elizabeth George Sue Grafton Evan Hunter Elmore Leonard Danielle Steel And the Beagle himself!

Editor Barnaby Conrad and Monte Schulz (son of the late Charles Schulz) provide introductory chapters that address the writing life and how Snoopy's experience--his tenacity and resilience--can inspire us all.

            5 out of 5 stars "Stories aren't written ... they're rewritten".......2006-12-31

'Snoopy's Guide To The Writing Life' is not the most in depth "how to" writing book you'll come across, but it certainly is the most charming. Illustrated liberally with Charles M. Schulz's disarmingly adorable beagle, using all comic strips from which Snoopy's desire to become a novelist was based on, the book also offers creative and inspirational tips from famous authors from all genres of writing.

Ray Bradbury, Danielle Steel, Clive Cussler, Julia Child, Ed McBain, Sidney Sheldon, Sue Grafton, Elmore Leonard, and many, many more. Whether you feel the calling to write non-fiction, general fiction, Sci-Fi, cookbooks, biographies, or short stories, there is a word of advice pertinent to your chosen genre. This book isn't really a "how to" book but rather motivation and encouragement from authors who've paid their debts. One of my favorite pieces was Jack Canfield's, on accumulating rejection slips. He points out many famous authors and pieces of literature that were rejected many times over before being accepted. Just don't give up.

This lighthearted book should be included in every writer's bookshelf. Next time you're stuck, lighten up, take it off the shelf, and help yourself to some inspiration. There is also a lovely foreword by Monte Schulz, Charles's son, in which he remembers his father, and a great introduction by Charles's long time friend Barnaby Conrad, with remembrances of one of the greatest cartoonists of all time. Don't miss out on this treasure, whether you are a writer or not. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Gift for the Writer in Your Life!.......2006-09-17

Do you have a writer in your life? A child graduating from college or high school or even elementary school? A cousin or nephew who spends his or her days dreaming up worlds to explore? Even, dare I say it, a Harry Potter fanficcer? Then Snoopy's Guide to the Writing Life is the ideal book to give your writer, on birthdays, on holidays, at graduation.

This is as much a book about life as it is a book about writing. This isn't a book about "the process." The book won't help you put words on the page, or help you fix your grammar, or describe the best ways of building air-tight plots. What Snoopy's Guide does is far more interesting and far more important--it takes twenty-odd writers and has them talk about about their writing processes, their wins and their losses, and each writer relates their experiences in some way back to Peanuts, which puts their experiences on terms everyone can relate to. Every writer has faced the terror of the blank page, or the title that won't come, or the vagaries of the market. Rather than discuss writing, Snoopy's Guide discusses the writing life, and that makes it a valuable resource to treasure.

If you need a gift, Snoopy's Guide would be ideal. I should know--I gave one as a gift, and it was perfect.

I luved this book. I read the whole thing and then bought it to take it home. It was inspiring to read what the authors contributed.

5 out of 5 stars My motivation level has been increased!.......2004-07-21

I just loved this book! I didn't buy it because I was hoping it would tell me how to get published...I bought it for the motivational comic strips!

How many times I would love to write a letter to an editor that says, I have just written the best story ever but I'm not going to mail it to you...instead you can come and get it...giggle...

If you are looking for a "how-to" book, then this isn't it, but if you are looking for a way to laugh at the whole process of writing, submitting and waiting for the good/bad letter to come..then this is the book for you...

I have many of the comic strips hanging at my computer, so when I get writer's block, I read the many "It was a dark and stormy night" and I seem to laugh a little and then start writing even more...

5 out of 5 stars It was a dark and stormy review..........2004-03-25

"Snoopy's Guide to the Writing Life" is a tribute to Charles Schulz, the late great creator of the Peanuts comic strip and its famous beagle-with-a-typewriter, Snoopy. The book is filled with various strips lampooning all sorts of aspects of writing, and tiny snippets of advice from famous authors.

The strips in this book are so funny that I had to share many of them with my husband as I read. Particularly all the ones that have within them some variation of the line: "It was a dark and stormy night." Snoopy seemed fixated on that idea, unable to get past it to anything more original than "it was a dark and stormy noon," or perhaps, "he was a dark and stormy knight."

And in between all of these stormy nights we get to see Snoopy's clashes with editors and publishers of all kinds: "Dear Contributor, We are returning your dumb story. Note that we have not included our return address. We have moved to a new office, and we don't want you to know where we are." Ouch! All writers can identify with some part of the poor beagle's struggles for fame, recognition, and a fifty thousand dollar check!

I was a bit surprised to find out just how short most of these little essays are--a few paragraphs, generally. On the other hand, it meant there was more room for comic strips, so how can I complain? This book isn't meant to be an exhaustive textbook or guide to the writing life. It's a joyful riff on the pain, excitement, and perspiration that is writing. You're bound to find something in here by a writer you love, and it's neat just to see what these preeminent folks have to say. Each essay is preceded by a related comic strip, and many of the essays address Snoopy or one of his friends directly, or mention poor Snoopy's latest plight--it's an endearing conceit. Each is then followed by several more strips just to keep us laughing.

This is a wonderful coffee table book. It's a great gift for your favorite struggling, would-be, or even successful writer. All of us can relate to Snoopy's trials and tribulations. All of us can enjoy seeing these brief words of wisdom from such accomplished authors. And all of us could use a good laugh at ourselves and the "hardships" we endure in the writing life!

4 out of 5 stars A nice wake up call!.......2005-01-10

It is about time someone brings to light the dangers of over- vaccination! This book explores the many dangerous side effects of vaccination, the obscurity of diseases such as Coronavirus, the inadequacies in vaccines such as Leptospirosis, and the lack of science behind annual rabies mandates. The text given is thourough, and thought provoking! Many vaccines are mandated based on fear, and not science. It is refreshing to see an author admit the inadequacies of vaccinations and the laws surrounding them. Vaccines can become dangerous, and cannot be considered harmless, as demostrated in this book.

This book provides a solid outline of data that rubs against the grain! A great mind-opener! It is great for those questioning current vaccination standards, yet will easily rub wrong with those who strongly advoate vaccine usage. The main down-fall to the book is that it focuses on the negative, and gives little alternative beyond not vaccinating. I would use this book as a resource for the negatives of vaccination, yet would do further research to determine if or how you will choose to vaccinate. The book would serve well coupled with Don Hamiltons book Homeopathy for Cats and Dogs: Small doses for small animals, which also gives some interesting insight into vaccinations, and more alternative on how to administer them, if at all.

                1 out of 5 stars Bad - shouldn't be called a "guide".......2003-12-24

This book is not a guide as it doesn't guide you to answer the obvious question "if you don't vaccinate, what DO you do??" It discusses all the bad things vaccines do, but gives no solution for protecting your dog against the deadly Distemoer, Parvo and Rabies. Ridiculous.

Indisputably the largest and most comprehensive book available on Noritake, more than 1,000 pieces in classical, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles with both luster and non-luster finishes are presented, as well as a wide variety of post-war bone china figurines and recent collector-series items such as Valentine's Day hearts and Easter eggs. The time span covered is greater than any other book in this field, including non-dinnerware "Noritake"-marked porcelains made between 1908-1995. Most of the items presented in this comprehensive volume have never before been seen in books on this subject. Chapters reviewing the history of the Noritake Company and trends in Noritake collecting, as well as photos of extremely rare pages from Noritake sales books are included. A comprehensive essay regarding the identification of Noritake backstamps with exclusive full-color photos of each stamp round out the book. The high-quality photographic materials are very clearly and carefully organized, making the book extremely easy to use as a reference tool for both novices and experts.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for the Noritake collector.......2007-09-24

In one volume, Spain takes the reader through Noritake's art deco production. That is an important point--this volume is not about the dinnerware lines, but rather concerns itself with the art deco "fancyware" or giftware items. Organized alphabetically, beautiful cake plates, dresser boxes, vases, etc. are illustrated, and chapters start off with excellent introductions. The opening chapter itself is very helpful, outlining the overlapping "Nippon" and "Noritake" collecting periods. Not just a collector book, this book also provides a history of the company, and is well-written, accurate, and the best collector book available on the subject. Highly recommended.

Using flamboyant plants to evoke tropical gardens is the hottest trend in the gardening world, perhaps best described as the "banana and canna" style of garden design. Hot Plants for Cool Climates makes clear, for those of us without greenhouses or the time and muscles to dig and wrap plants for winter, that this look can be achieved by using tropical-looking hardy plants or by planting container gardeners that can be moved indoors before first frost.

Most tropical plants are perennial in their native habitats, and if we lived in Hawaii, we too could grow agaves, Elephant's Ear, and Angel's Trumpet outdoor year-round. For those of us who garden in less benign climates, the authors give instructions on mulching and wrapping such plants to protect them from freezes. It involves straw and burlap and leaves the plants looking like mummified little soldiers, but able to withstand temperatures 20 degrees lower than without protection.

The gardens pictured in the plentiful color photographs are certainly tempting, as they overflow with huge leaves, flashy foliage, exotic flowers, ponds and vines, all combined into the rich tapestry of a jungle. You can almost smell the jasmine and hear the chattering of the parrots. Thankfully, the chapter on hardy plants for the tropical look (bamboos, grasses, hardy bananas, ferns, Petasites) puts this style of garden within the reach of most gardeners, no matter if they live in Minnesota or California. Especially useful are the appendices, which list plants for a variety of design situations and a source list for the plants recommended throughout the book. --Val Easton

                    Book Description

The most exciting new trend in garden design is the lush look of the tropics -- no matter where you live! If, like so many gardeners, you're a little bored with pastel flowers and rigid borders, welcome to the jungly garden, where the plants have huge shiny leaves, boldly colored foliage, ferny textures, and flame-colored flowers. Now that garden centers and nurseries are stocking banana plants, elephant ears, giant ferns, and Amazon lilies, you can have your own tropical garden no matter where you live. Whether you want to go the whole way and turn your suburban yard into a jungle paradise or simply want to grow a few tropical plants in containers, you'll add pizzazz to your garden and your gardening experience by indulging in these exciting new plants. How do you grow tropical plants in a cold climate? The way you grow annuals or other tender perennials -- you plant new ones each season or winter them over indoors. And you can even include hardy plants with a tropical look to augment the true denizens of the junble. If you've ever bemoaned the sorry appearance of an August garden, tropicals are the perfet answer -- their leaves stay fresh and they bloom undaunted by summer's worst heat. In HOT PLANTS FOR COOL CLIMATES, you will find both inspirational photographs and solid information on how to design a flamboyant tropical landscape and grow the plants that make it happen no matter where you live.

This bood is exactly what I was looking for. What plant to use to create the «tropical» look for cold country as far as Québec. Great tips, even for a long time gardener as I am, I have fund lots of plants that I did'nt know we could over wintered in cold storage. I really hope that they would be a part II of the same book, which will illustrated some nordic landscaping with a exotic look, using the plant showing in this book. Thank's again

5 out of 5 stars Do You Crave a Lush Landscape?.......2005-11-22

I've always admired the gorgeous plants and lush landscaping that one could do in the tropics. This book tells you how to do that without moving to Florida. The authors have good credentials for a book of this type.
Information about the authors from the publisher's website:
"Susan A. Roth is an award-winning writer and photographer. She cultivates her own eclectic garden in Stony Brook, New York.
Dennis Schrader is one of the foremost experts on tropical plants in the Northeast. He co-owns and -operates Landcraft Environments, a wholesale greenhouse in Mattituck, New York."

The back of the book is helpful, the pictures throught the book are good, but not really inspiring. I'd recommend this book for beginners getting into tropicals. but if your looking for more this wouldn't be the best book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Chicago Bananas and pineapples.......2004-06-18

Tropical gardening here in the the Midwest has been a passion of mine for over 20 years. I never thought of it as different just big annuals. Thats what I liked about Susan's and Dennis's approach to this book. It was really laid back there just plants was the feeling I was getting from reading this book. They didn't make it complicated. I liked the real expectations they had in the book no hype about growing you own table ready bananas in Maine or something crazy like that just pure and simple you are growing them for the foliage effect don't get carried away. Bananas are just big cannas and brumansias are really big coleus they put it simple and gave great advice and the garden shots are great a real inspiration. The over wintering section was worth the price of the book.

3 out of 5 stars If only the content lived up to the title!.......2002-10-29

When I first saw the title of this book, I thought it was exactly what I was looking for. But that turned out to be because conceptual accuracy was sacrificed for verbal cleverness on the cover. The book has little to do with gardening in temperate zones (horticulturally understood to be climates free from extremes of heat or cold), or cool climates (horticulturaly understood to mean climates with heat-deprived summers). To the contrary, the book presumes that the gardener lives where there is a significant season of sustained heat, during which time plants will quickly establish themselves from plant-and-pull frost protection measures or regenerate as root-hardy returning perennials. The book is aimed at gardeners in the East; West Coast gardeners will probably be happier with books that advocate attaining the "tropical look" with plants that feature year-round outdoor hardiness and don't require summer heat to perform well.
