Fantastic Read!.......2007-03-20

This book is not an autobiography but a great look back on the experiences of the late great George Best among others. It was a captivating hilarious read which makes me wish I could have seen him in one of his after hours shows. The book is a show in itself and shows a side of what football (Soccer in N. America) was and still should be really all about...the good times. Sadly George did this to excess and eventually paid the price but then what a life. The stories are not all about George Best but collections of various football lore. Well worth the purchase price.

Captivating reading from cover to cover brought back memories of the golden age of football in the 60's and 70's. Great look at the life of one of the greatest players the game has ever seen. Fantastic insights into Bestie's life and the life of a professional footballer of the times. Also sheds some interesting and entertaining tidbits on some of the other football stars of the day.

I am so glad I found this book! My fiance and I got engaged and set the date. We were determined to plan our wedding in 4 months. Everyone said it couldn't be done. With the help of this book, we're proving them wrong! This book cuts through the usual frills of wedding planning crap and gets straight to the important points. The to-do lists included at the beginning of the book and at the beginning of each chapter were immensely helpful. Aside from outlining what to do and when, this book offers ways to cut costs and appeals to true indie, DIY brides. It proves that you can have a fabulous, FUN wedding without sacrificing a year of your life to plan!

I stumbled upon this book by accident while browsing through wedding help books at a local bookstore. This book stuck out from the rest of the organizers because it was conveniently small sized (the more popular ones were rediculously gaudy and huge). I looked at a couple other small organizers, but they didn't quite add up to what this book is. Shawne's Instant Wedding Planner is laid out in a way that helps you gather your thoughts in a logical manner, helping to organize even your mind. She starts out with having you and your fiance jot down your scattered thoughts about various wedding subjects (dress, catering, wedding party), followed by a chart where you can decide exactly which details are most (or not) important to you, and then she moves on to budgeting, then to shopping around, and everything you need to do leading up to the big day (with options, tips, and advice to help you along the way). She covers virtually everything you need (so nothing's left out on your special day), and her advice and tips are extremely helpful. I especially love how she's down-to-Earth and considers all walks of life in her book. This book is perfect for what it was made for: planning a wedding in a short amount of time. A MUST HAVE for those who are rushing to put together their dream wedding. It was honestly a life-saver for me, I VERY highly recommend it!

Coffee Table Book with Substance.......2001-01-26

This book offers a clear and concise introduction to the development of Walt Disney's first full-length animated feature. The book's use of stills, roughs, and concept art vividly illustrate much of the "magic" that goes into making an animated film. Not only that, but the book's incorporation of technical details provides enough "insider information" to appeal to those wanting to know more about the how of animation. In fact, I used the book's section on the multiplane camera to introduce the invention's importance to an introductory class in animation. It worked wonders!

Also nicely developed in the book is how Snow White set the production and narrative standards for the Disney's subsequent films. It's nice to see a coffee table book with substance!

Gorgeous artwork; good intro to animation process.......1998-05-03

I loved the artwork and descriptions of the animation process. (The display of the art is organized to also help explain the process.) Also "behind the scenes" recollections of how the movie was made as well as a discussion on how to conserve, and prepare for sale, animation artwork. This can be equally appreciated by those with serious or casual interest in animation art.

easy to follow directions.......2005-08-22

This is a great book. We've used it at our summer park program with kids ages 5-15 and they love it. The directions are very easy to follow compared to other beaded animal books and online sources. There's also a really good variety of projects. It will keep the kids busy for hours!

As Good As the Original, Maybe Better!.......2004-04-28

Making these beaded animals is just as much fun as were the ones in the original "Gecko". Like in the original, you get step by step instructions with photos and diagrams that are so very easy to follow. I just loved both Gecko books and, like me, in no time at all you'll be making lots of little beaded animals. Animals for you and animals for others, because don't you know, they make swell gifts, especially if you turn them into earrings or pins.

Actually you know, I might even have liked "Gecko 2" a little better than I liked the first "Gecko".

A solid guide to tropical flowering plants.......2007-08-28

This is a very good book for gardeners who live in a tropical climate, especially those who would like to grow plants that are not ordinarily found in big box plant nurseries.

Cultivation requirements of listed plants are clear and concise, and include warnings as to invasiveness, toxicity of plant materials, and any unusual quirks.

There is also a list of invasive plants, and those that are considered endangered or rare.

I enjoy just sitting and reading through it, each time picking out another plant I would like to have, as if it was a catalog.

Perhaps the most gratifying reference-book of its type.......2007-07-20

This excellent book is not without a few faults--some of which have been brought up in other reviews--but overall this packs a huge amount of information in a beautifully presented volume with gorgeous photography and well-written text. Yes, it's more valuable to the horticulturally-oriented, since it is organized by family rather than genus, and this does limit its easy use to the more studied reader. But nevertheless it is very satisfying to the browser who is unaware of either potential organizational scheme.

Perhaps because Ms. Llamas is South Florida-based, the zone information is sometimes less than accurate, especially as regards tropicals that perform as frost-tender or half-hardy perennials in subtropical areas such as the Gulf States; she doesn't award zone-designations on the a/b half-zone system, a very useful tool in determining hardiness of tropical and subtropical plants; nor is their differentiation between climate adaptations in California or the Desert Southwest as opposed to the humid south/southeast, or truly tropical areas. Nevertheless the zone information is better than in the majority of texts, and in fact it is probably the only successful book I can think of that combines beautiful images, well-written and concise language with at least basic cultivation info, and current scientific nomenclature. She also includes some taxonomical details that really can help identify one plant in comparison to another related species. And here also, the family-grouping scheme is very helpful in comparing related plants, and serves as a valuable learning-tool for budding gardeners, horticulturists and landscape designers/architects.

There's room for improvement: perhaps a two-volume expansion is in order. But I think few will be disappointed with this. Certainly for South Florida there is no finer and more usable book on the subject. And it likely will introduce even seasoned tropical-growers to many new and exciting plants.

Tropical Plants.......2007-01-05

Very comprehensive. Species are grouped by families. Lots of excellent photos. Have bought over 10 books for friends after they saw mine. Highly recommended for anyone interested in tropical plants.

Excellent book, but not for a novice.......2006-07-09

Previous reviews hit this book on the head. If you are a novice gardener with little horticultural (with botanical) background or experience, you may find the pictures interesting, but certainly the format, layout and information unfulfilling.

However, if you live in Zones 9, 10 or 11, and grow many tropical plants outdoors (beyond the cliche' houseplants know in temperate regions), this book will help you familiarize yourself with plants you will encounter in outdoor landscapes in southern coastal Texas and southern and central FLorida, Puerto Rico, across the Caribbean and to some relevancy, Hawaii.

The book will keep you abreast of last taxonomic names and yes, groupings into plant families.

There is cultural information pertinent to each plants' OUTDOOR landscape use, providing a solid foundation of culture for the plant genus, then any specific information within the genus the differences between, say, light exposures, pH tolerances, soil preferences among species.

A must have reference for serious sub-tropical gardeners and even some professionals (I have seen Northern conservatories with very poor or outright incorrect labeling of tropicals) for ID and legitimate (Fairchild Tropical Garden and other so. FL expert testimonials) information. The ubiquitous reference books EXOTICA and HORTUS 3 fail to describe many of the plants in this book, and this book provides current (yes, 21st Century) taxonomic namings.

One of the most helpful horticultural books I own........2006-03-20

A friend and I saw this book while on a field trip for our National Wildlife Steward training. The price was heartstopping, but we were so impressed by the potential information, and the fact that the author was a South Floridian, that we both purchased a copy. Since then, it has been of great value to me when our Landscape Committee needs to know the botanical name and information for many of the exotic (and native) plants coming into our community. The book is a good starting place to research the cultural information we need to insure our "Right Plant, Right Place" philosophy.

Comparing visions.......2004-03-15

Shimon Peres, Nobel Peace Prize winner and a former prime minister of Israel, finds a way to examine how far Israel has come in a half-century by conducting an imaginary tour of the Holy Land for Theodor Herzl, father of Zionism. While the prose is hardly exotic, Peres does offer some keen and thought-provoking analysis. The book is recommended for readers with an interest in modern Israel.

Two Visionaries, Different Eras.......1999-07-30

Peres takes Herzl on an imaginary tour through Israel, a century after Herzl's first visit to Palestine. The author makes astute observations about Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and the spectacular changes these and other cities in Israel have undergone throughout the years.

Peres evaluates the predictions made by Herzl in his utopian novel, Old-New Land, in light of present-day realities. Of course, some of them were totally off-base, but others are amazingly prescient. And, in discussing the character of the Jewish state and how it ought to deal with its neighbors, Peres quotes extensively from Herzl's writings and the works of other Zionist thinkers (e.g., Ahad Ha'am).

Despite the mediocre editing job, there is plenty of keen insight on issues ranging from cultural/religious/ethnic diversity to the water problem in the Middle East that make this book a good read.
