Book Description
In 1908 an atmospheric explosion in northern Siberia released energy equivalent to 15 Mton of TNT. Can a comparable or larger NEO affect us again? When the next NEO strikes Earth will it be large enough to destroy a city? Will the climate change significantly? Can archaeology and anthropology provide insights into the expected cultural responses with NEO interactions? Does society have a true grasp of the actual risks involved? Is the Great Depression a good model for the economic collapse that could follow a NEO catastrophe? This volume provides a necessary link between various disciplines and comet/asteroid impacts.

Must Have Book to Understand Asteroid Impact Consequences.......2007-04-20
The Bobrowsky edited book is an excellent must-read book for anyone conducting serious intellectual inquiry into a potential asteroid impact with the Earth. The articles are a wonderful collection on a very serious topic. The reader gains multiple insights on the varied interdisciplinary issues related to asteroids. This is a fine contribution to the current state of knowledge. The book would make for an excellent university text in either astronomy or public policy agenda-setting and formulation. I highly recommend the investment in this book if you have serious interest in the history of asteroid/comet impacts as well as what humans may do to mitigate such a disaster in the future. I believe this book to be the best I have read on the topic of asteroids impacts. I am pleased to have added it to my personal library.

Book Description
In the 1960s and 1970s deep space missions were dispatched in pairs in case one was lost in launch or failed during its journey. Following the triumphs of the Viking landings on Mars in 1976 and both Voyagers spacecraft successfully surveying the outer giant planets of the Solar System, it was decided by NASA to cut costs and send out just a single probe.
Although Magellan successfully mapped Venus by radar, it suffered from problems during the flight. Then came the loss of Mars Observer, whose engine exploded as it was preparing to enter Marsâ orbit because it was using technology designed for Earthâs satellites and the engine was not suited to spending several months in space. Later came the high-profile losses of Mars Climate Observer and Mars Polar Lander - a consequence of the faster, better, cheaper philosophy introduced by Dan Goldin in 1993. Even the highly successful Galileo mission suffered a major setback when its high-gain antenna (also based on satellite mission suffered a major setback when its high-gain antenna (also based on satellite communication technology) failed to deploy fully, greatly diminishing the craftâs radio transmission capabilities, forcing the ground crew to re-programme the on-board computer to enable it to fulfil its mission and provide stunning images of Jupiter and its moons.
In
Space Systems Failures, David Harland (here working with co-author Ralph Lorenz) describes the many quite fascinating tales of woe involving failures of rockets, satellites and deep space missions in his inimitable style, providing a unique insight into the trials and tribulations of exploration at the high frontier.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read.......2007-09-22
This book needs to be read by everyone in the Space industry, especially those in quality organizations. Remember, those unaware of the past are doomed to repeat it .....
so many types of failures.......2007-03-14
Harland takes us considerably beyond the simple news reporting of a space system failure. We learn that these have occurred quite frequently in the last 50 years. The book gives an appreciation why. Starting with the fact that the launch rockets are essentially large bombs, that have hopefully controlled explosions. But not always.
Then, when the probe or satellite gets into space, much else can go awry. The batteries might fail. The communication chips that talk to ground control might have been misprogrammed. The gyroscope needed to orient the satellite could be defective. And so on. If you are an engineer, the book is a nice education in what has to work in most space systems.
A priceless preservation of institutional memory - and fun to read!.......2005-12-03
This is an excellent book that IMHO anyone in the space business should read. Over 350 pages covering literally hundreds of cases of "what went wrong" with launchers, satellites, missions, instruments, designs, and procedures from the 1940s to the present. It is well written, entertaining, highly educational, and can be read in many short sittings since the average incident description is about one page long. The book not only covers what went wrong, but in many cases also what was done to fix it. "Space Systems Failures" is a valiant and perhaps unequaled attempt to preserve institutional memory and the lessons learned, often at great price, by the world's space programs.
It's a wonder..........2005-09-23
I've been a fan of the space program since I can remember! After reading this book, it makes one wonder how we get anything up at all. I've learned a few more things than I knew before!
Knowing even the so-called 'experts' screw up, and some of the incidents dissected in this book could apply to ANY industry. Unless you follow carefully, it's easy to lose track of which satellite, bus, or mission is discussed. I consider this book a very enjoyable read.
Good Survey.......2005-09-13
Good at identifying launch failure events and summarizing history, but lacks details on the actual failure modes. Tough area to cover since much of the info is classified, proprietary or lost deep in corporate files.

Book Description
Neal Asher has been publishing short fiction and books in the small press in Britain for several years, and made a successful move to paperback in 2001 with Gridlinked. He got a sheaf of favorable notices. "This is a brilliant and audacious work, chock-full of cutting-edge ideas. . . . I look forward to [his next books] enormously and to seeing Asher receive the success he is clearly destined for. Highly recommended," said SFRevu.com. Now Asher crosses the Atlantic and breaks into hardcover with Gridlinked, a science fiction adventure in the classic, fast-paced, action-packed tradition of Harry Harrison and Poul Anderson, with a dash of cyberpunk and a splash of Ian Fleming added to spice the mix. Cormac is a legendary Earth Central Security agent, the James Bond of a wealthy future where "runcibles" (matter transmitters controlled by AIs) allow interstellar travel in an eye blink throughout the settled worlds of the Polity. Unfortunately Cormac is nearly burnt out, "gridlinked" to the AI net so long that his humanity has begun to drain away. He has to take the cold-turkey cure and shake his addiction to having his brain on the net.Now he must do without just as he's sent to investigate the unique runcible disaster that's wiped out the entire human colony on planet Samarkand in a thirty-megaton explosion. With the runcible out, Cormac must get there by ship, but he has incurred the wrath of a vicious psychopath called Arian Pelter, who now follows him across the galaxy with a terrifying psychotic killer android in tow. And deep beneath Samarkand's surface there are buried mysteries, fiercely guarded. This is fast-moving, edge-of-the-seat entertainment -- an American debut that's sure to make a splash and launch Neal Asher in a big way.

James Bond saves the galaxy.......2007-08-28
I'm sorry, I just don't get it. Science fiction has, haltingly and with lots of recidivism, gotten a little bit beyond superheroes who can outgun/outguess/outfight everybody else in the universe. This book is a throwback. Our hero has no personality; the villain is scary, but of course the good guy drops him in one shot when they finally get together. It's pretty well written (hence the two stars) in between the cliches, but it's ultimately pointless.
Super Reader.......2007-08-04
Ian Cormac is a super agent of sorts. He works hand in hand with the Artificial Intelligence government. A cold, methodical man, he seduces and kills with aplomb, as necessary.
He is linked to the AI personally, and they tell him it is time for a break, to regain his humanity. He resists, but they have a job for him. He is to go and investigate a strange breakdown of an interstellar travel gate.
From earlier incidents, he has a serious enemy, a psychotic killer and his deranged android killing machine called Mr. Crane.
Cormac does gain allies, and there are androids on his side, but he discovers something even worse in his investigations.
You forgot to write an ending!!!.......2007-07-24
This book was a solid four stars until the last couple of chapters. If you've ever read a book and then gotten suspicious as you approached the end, because there didn't seem to be enough pages to wrap things up believably, then you know exactly how the end of this book feels.
I'm not an author, so I don't know how this happens, but maybe the author gets tired of writing and just slams 4 chapters of revelation into a couple of paragraphs and sends it to the editor. Who knows?
But as other reviewers here have said, the subplot of the rebel leader who wants Ian Cormac dead is a little distracting, but tolerable. The main story line is quite interesting. Basically, mankind (and Ian Cormac in particular) is caught up in some sort of struggle/conflict/police action between two very large, and powerful alien beings.
But at the end, you are never really told what was going on between the two beings and what happened. I really thought maybe my book was missing the last chapter or two.
Asher has huge potential. His writing is very readable and enjoyable. As another reviewer mentioned, some of his clever weaponry made the book even more interesting. It is space opera drama in great form - until the ending. Perhaps he will improve the wrap ups and become a good author, but I cannot recommend this one as the ending is too poorly done to leave the reader with satisfaction.
Gridlinked leaves you Gridwinked.......2007-06-29
Read the excellent review by J. McIntyre! Gridlinked, Neil Asher's first novel (a space opera of hard SF dimensions) had a good start but alas, nothing really new. Gridlinked began with a lot of promise (especially after all the hype it received). I found myself skipping some of the dross narrative and the writing was uneven where the plot line jumped around too much. The villain Arian Pelter and the sadistic Mr. Crane (the psychotic Android) where pretty cool yet all of the characters seemed too one dimensional for my taste. Then half way through the book, a new alien entity is introduced which appears as an after thought. The best thing about the book is the action and high-tech wizardry. Though in reality we'll probably living in a new stone age by that time. The book reminded me a lot of Alistair Reynold's Revelation Space saga. Even though the book does have a lot of shortcomings it's a fun read and one that makes you look at the future with a jaundiced eye. Glad I'll be long gone when and if this comes to light.
Promising first novel.......2007-04-09
Gridlinked is a slow starter but ends up a fast burn in the second half. I was close to putting the book down after 100 or so pages, as the story line was confusing & the writing somewhat uneven. Once the real action started, I was hooked, & stayed hooked until the final page. Good complex story, solid treatment of good/bad guys and bad/good guys. Fans of cyber thrillers will enjoy this book, & I look forward to watching Mr. Asher develop as a writer.

Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents
ASIN: 140513108X |
Book Description
Tragedies like the Columbia disaster are distressing reminders that things can go wrong in large, highly regarded organizations. Although we embrace new technologies eagerly, we are reluctant to accept the risks of innovation. Moreover, some technologies and organizations may be too complex to control effectively. What makes some organizations more prone to accidents? Do the very measures taken to increase safety contribute to accidents? Can societies, organizations, and individuals learn from failures and reduce risks?Against this backdrop, Professors William H. Starbuck of New York University and Moshe Farjoun of York University have invited diverse experts to contribute insights about the Columbia accident and the organizational lessons it suggests. This book thus presents many viewpoints on the complex behavioral factors that led to disaster.

Limits to human control over risky technology.......2006-10-29
After two horrible disasters, do you think that NASA has learned from its mistakes, and that it will never happen again? If so, you need to read this book! In 18 well-written chapters, the editors have assembled a set of experts on organizations and disasters to analyze lessons from the Columbia disaster. Because the Challenger disaster foreshadowed many of the problems that subsequently turned up in official investigations of the Columbia disaster, it also figures heavily in this edited book. The authors demonstrate the analytic power of an historically informed organizational analysis of a large governmental agency under strong political pressure to produce results with limited resources.
Two points in particular caught my eye. First, after the Challenger disaster, NASA was supposedly reorganized to place greater emphasis on safety. However, because the organization began to define the space exploration program as a problem of meeting production goals and deadlines, "safety" never achieved the priority in the organization than it deserved. Instead of seeing the space shuttle program as a developmental one, exploring the risky frontier of technological knowledge, NASA officials treated it like any other flight program. Second, as anomalies continued to crop up after flights, engineers and officials began to think about deviations from acceptable practices and outcomes as "normal." As deviation was normalized, unusual events were taken for granted and didn't provoke the kind of response than one would expect from life threatening occurrences.
Scholars interested in organization studies, organizational learning, systems theory, and other academic disciplines will learn much from this book. However, one can also hope that public officials will take its lessons to heart and look more closely at the design of other risky systems that are operating close to the limits of our scientific knowledge.

TO THE ATTENTION OF AMAZON.CA.......2004-09-03
The classification of this book in this section is quite misleading, since it has nothing to do specifically with "SPACE" in the astronomical sense ! I think it would find a better, more appropriate and useful setting under : "Books > Subjects > Nonfiction > Current Events > Disaster Relief" probably. The five stars above have no meaning in this context, and feel free not to publish this commentary which has only an editorial purpose ! Best regards.
Not just another rope book........2001-01-03
This text is the perfect tool for those preparing to teach confined space rescue or develop a technical rescue team. The information is relevant, precise and real world. It points out the "why" rather than just "how" a team should be developed. I plan to use this text as required reading for students of the courses I teach. And will recommend that the Division Chiefs of my Dept. read it to help justify our rescue teams existence. Thanks Chase..

Book Description
Veteran science journalist William E. Burrows offers a bold new mission for the US space program: to protect the Earth from the ever-growing number of perils that threaten our way of lifeand even our very survival. We are living through one of the most dangerous times in human history. Nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons technology are proliferating. Extreme natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, fires, and earthquakes are becoming increasingly costlynot only in dollars, but in livesas population expands. Environmental crises threaten to provoke massive famines and widespread social collapse. Asteroids the size of battleships streak within striking distance of the earth every year. One strategy offers the best hope of protecting us from all of these dangersa revitalized national space program that coordinates efforts in global defense, environmental protection, communications, and in military security. The Survival Imperative offers an impassioned argument for this bold initiative. Most of all, Burrows warns that the primary obstacle to achieving a true planetary defense program is not financial or scientific, but socialan unwillingness to acknowledge the urgency of the crisis, and to take the political risks needed to address it. The question, says Burrows, is not whether we can do it, but whether we will act before its too late.
Customer Reviews:
Will Humanity Survive?.......2007-01-09
This question seems more important than all others under discussion today. In this extremely significant book, a seasoned space author dramatizes events that might lead to our extinction, and then presents an unusual but logical program that will ensure that we carry on for the next millenium. Anyone who cares what happens to our civilization beyond his/her own lifetime should read this thoughtful and well written presentation.
Should be required reading for everyone!.......2006-11-03
I can't believe I'm the first person to review this book here, since it has been out for several months. It is an important book that should be read by everybody with an interest in the future of humankind -- though unfortunately, it probably won't be. It's likely to be ignored by people who think books about space aren't relevant to their own concerns. But the protection of civilization from potential disasters (either natural, such as an asteroid strike, or the result of human action, such as a widespread terrorist attack) is of concern to everyone, as is the need for coordinated efforts in global defense, communications, and environmental protection. The space program, which has drifted without a goal for much too long, can and should be restructured to provide that protection. As Burrows says, "The most important fact of this century is not that Earth is threatened in many ways. It is that for the first time in all of its history a decisive means of protecting the home planet exists. It is by using space."
The most ambitious and most crucial of the book's proposals is that an archive containing a comprehensive, continuously-updated record of our civilization, and the information required to restore it after a disaster, be kept in a colony on the moon. There is no more compelling reason to return to the moon than to save civilization, Burrows points out, and yet supporters of a lunar colony are now fragmented, absorbed in the pursuit of competing goals for building one. If they were united with the aim of establishing and maintaining an archive, the other benefits of utilizing the moon would ultimately be obtained. Will space advocates take up this challenge? I would like to think so, but in the past most of them have argued for the space effort on grounds of far lower priority and of lesser significance to the general public. There is urgent need for that to change.
The book's main problem is that it may not get into the hands of its intended audience. It contains a detailed history of space programs and proposals that readers knowledgeable about the subject may find superfluous, yet will appeal to only a minority of those who think they're not interested in space; and this may limit its readership. Yet it is worth everyone's time to read and ponder. If you are a space enthusiast, read it even if you believe you already know why space is important -- and then urge friends who don't care about space to read it, too.

Book Description
READ THE FACTS NASA AND THE GOVERNMENT DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW. . .
This large size - 8x11 -- deluxe edition provides evidence that the space agency issued warnings to the public about the danger of coming in contact with space shuttle debris in order to cover up the true cause of the Columbia disaster.
WERE THEY ATTEMPTING TO CONCEAL THE FACT THAT A WEAPON FIRST ENVISIONED BY LEGENDARY INVENTOR NIKOLA TESLA OVER 80 YEARS AGO WAS THE REAL CULPRIT THAT BROUGH DOWN THE SHIP AND KILLED THE SEVEN ASTRONAUTS?
Learn about the San Francisco photographer who took photos of the Columbia as it passed over the Bay Area. The photos, when developed, revealed anomalous flashes of purple light around the shuttle minutes before it was destroyed. NASAS later confiscated the photographer's camera and flew it to Mission Control by a special jet. What did the camera contain that made it so crucial for NASA to take possession of it?
The book also includes the full text of a l940 newspaper article in which Tesla first unveils the invention of his "Death Ray to a sympathetic reporter. Did other scientists pick up where Tesla left off and create a super weapon the likes of which the world has never seen before? Was a device Tesla intended to be used defensively developed into a horrifying offensive weapon instead?
Another chapter deals with the rumored Soviet conspiracy to sabotage the U.S. space program, leaving a path of destruction in their wake that includes eight U.S. rockets destroyed over a 19 month period. Was the U.S.S.R. also responsible for the Challenger disaster in 1986?
This book will be of special interest to those who have long thought that much of Tesla's work continues behind our backs and underground by a Secret Government that has a global agenda of world domination.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful as an overview.......2007-09-14
Our homeschooled seventh grader found this book engaging as an overview of the period, especially when taken in context with other works, especially Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, a child's-eye, heart-wrenching account of the worst years; the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck; and the Dust Bowl songs of Woody Guthrie. The strongest point is that the book contains some excellent black and white photos that we hadn't seen elsewhere.
