Book Description

In Feels Like Far, award-winning author Linda Hasselstrom paints an intimate portrait of family, love, work, nature, and survival against the backdrop of the far-flung South Dakota prairie. Sixteen linked stories tell of the joy of training a first horse, the heartbreak of finding a fatally injured cow, the beauty of cavorting nighthawks, the stubbornness of her father, a rigid old rancher who bucks at old age, the deep, almost spiritual bond she shares with a friend who is diagnosed with AIDS. "In deliciously direct and unsentimental style" (Kathleen Norris), Hasselstrom maps the landscape of her life, demarcating the same beauties and brutalities that intermingle on the Great Plains she calls home.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this book down.......2004-02-29

I unboxed this book, flipped open some pages to preview and before I knew it, I had read 60 pages standing in my kitchen. Legs buckling, I sat and finshed the book in one sitting. The book is compelling because Hasselstrom's storytelling makes you want to read further, but also because her writing mesmerizes the soul. I found myself rereading sentences and hanging on the beauty of her unique prose. "How does she write like this?" I kept asking myself. Her ability to take you within the moment is unsurpassed. You don't need to be a cowgirl to enjoy this book, but if you are, you'll finish it in one sitting--or standing--like I did.

5 out of 5 stars Touching..........2002-09-27

Reading this book was a wonderful experience. What a touching story of a family that develops as all families do; realizing we love our family members even more when we accept them loving us the only way they know how. All this against the backdrop of a still unspoiled area of America. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this region, history or living.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.......2000-05-26

People from the prairies of South Dakota and North Dakota aren't pretentious. Well, some might be, but they tend to stand out in miserable ways. Linda Hasselstrom's writing is like the people of her home: careful, persistent, simple, surprisingly complex, fascinating. Your own family and home may be very different from Hasselstrom's, but through her writing you'll gain a better understanding of your own people and place of origin. Hasselstrom is a master; she shows us how to cherish the tribes we were born into, despite the inevitable losses and disappointments of life. She ranks right up there with Kathleen Norris and Patricia Hampl.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for Scandinavian travel.......2000-04-20

Overall a good book for Scandinavian travel. The things I liked about the book include the general information about each country, it was very helpful during a recent trip to Norway and Denmark. The hotel and restaurant information was useful and right on. It is a good guide to use if you want to see the highlights of each country, but perhaps lacks in-depth information about off the beaten path.

A couple of things that are lacking in the book include web site and email addresses for hotels, restaurants and museums. Also, there is not a lot of information in the book about train or boat travel in Scandinavia.

Even though this book was released in 2000, some of the times museums were open differed from the guide, so confirm with the museum before exploring.

If you are just going to one country, I would recommend purchasing a specific book on that country. Overall, I was pleased with my purchase and it served me well while in Scandinavia.

              Book Description

Strong characters, complex relationships, and believable dialogue combine to create an unforgettable story of loss and redemption.

Star is sixteen when her mother dies, and nothing seems to make her feel better: Not talking to her shrink. Not playing rock music with her best friend Dooley. Not even listening to her mother's old Beatles albums.

It is not until Star finds an unsent letter addressed to John Lennon and a broken-down vintage Gibson guitar that she begins to find a way out of her grief...and maybe even a way to take care of some of her mother's unfinished business.

              Praise for PEPPERLAND:

"Delaney's book will resonate with readers long after they put it down... Star's pain and healing sends a strong message, and Delaney is the perfect conduit." --VOYA

"Delaney's sensitive style and his development of realistic, multidimensional lead characters combine to create an absorbing story set in the early '80s... The author shows how a love of art can help one cope with difficulties as he deftly balances the dual themes of dealing with tragic loss and with being different." --School Library Journal

Pamela Jean Cochran, or Star as she would rather be called, lives for her music. After her beloved mother dies, music seems to be the only thing that gets her through the day -- specifically Beatles music. Star's mother loved the Beatles and now their music is all Star has left to remember her by.

When she hears that John Lennon is coming to town, she gives herself a mission. Her mission is to get backstage, meet John Lennon, and give him her mother's fan letter.

Thinking about this mission gets her through the long days of school and therapy. That, and spending time with her best friend, Dooley. Dooley is an amazing artist and Star ends up helping him through some pretty rough times.

This book was really, really good, and I made a personal connection with it. PEPPERLAND may cause you to reach for a few tissues and by the end of it you'll walk away with a "wow, life isn't so bad after all" attitude.

3 out of 5 stars Good for the grieving.......2006-01-22

Pepperland was an interesting look into anger, grief and coming of
age. I enjoyed the music references and imagery in this book. I do not think this has a wide appeal, aside from the cover being terrible, the character of Star and the offbeat retro nature of her voice I do not think will captive too many young teens. Also the plotline with Dooley is confusing and will turn off young readers. This book is good for teens tackling issues of grief, especially the loss of a parent.

              3 out of 5 stars lame ending--overall good book.......2005-09-24

This book is about Star, a teenage girl dealing with her mother's death. The story is mostly about Star and her friend Dooley's relationship, which goes from friends to fighting to weird kisses to anger to love (?) or something like it. The plot is largely driven by Dooley's locker and artwork being vandalized. It gets very boring at times, and I had to skim some parts for the sheer dullness of the storyline. The only thing that kept me reading was the letter that Star's mother had written to John Lennon, which for some reason Star didn't want to open.... I had come to the conclusion quite early on that John Lennon would end up being Star's father. Lennon's story is a backdrop to the events of Star's life, and Star's mother had been a huge Beatle fan. Star's mother had gotten pregnant when she was 17, and so Star had not ever known her father. It talks about Star imagining her mother as one of John's song inspirations before he met Yoko, and about her mother's obsession with the Beatles when Star was young. I was so sure that Star would open the letter and figure out that her mother had been John's old girlfriend and John Lennon was her father! Or she would deliver the letter to John Lennon when he came for the concert and he would read the letter and be like, oh my god, your my daughter, and he would embrace her and they would have a nice long chat and then they would be forced to go their seperate ways but Star would have confidence and inspiration for her song now that she knew she was *john lennon's daughter*. But it was quite disappointing because she never got to meet John Lennon and you never got to read the letter that had been driving the story. So basically I got a huge disappointment. It was pretty lame, the ending. She got kicked out of the concert and she didn't get to meet John Lennon and you never figure out who was her father. There is a note at the end that says that the author "changed history" because he had John appear at a concert at the time he should have been dead. WELL if your gonna change history do it dramatically! I mean, it would have been way cooler if John had ended up being her father. SO if your not going to change history dramatically, go with the real thing! It would have been WAY more interesting if she had figured out John Lennon had just died! And then she opens the letter and finds that he and her mother had had a relationship. Or that her mom had just been a huge fan. But both of those endings would have been better than just describing John's concert and her failed attempts to get in.

Great book, lame ending, rather disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars First Delaney book for me--it's awesome........2005-07-11

Being a female guitarist, I was able to relate to this book very well. Star reminded me a lot of myself. The book starts off in an awkward yet intriguing way and slowly, you start to put it together and see what's going on. Towards the middle, after Star and her friend Dooley take the guitar to Teri, at a guitar repair shop, the book gets really moody and might be boring for some readers. Some of the pages I had to force myself to read...some serious dead moments.

However, the book becomes very lively concerning Dooley and his love for art. He ends painting a picture of Star and puts in an exhibit. But afterwhile, it was all over and the book picked up again. Star and Dooley end up falling in love, Star doesn't get to meet John Lennon but she ends up resolving some other issues including finally writing a song for her mother in the end. I thought that was great, even though considering I'm a Lennon fan, I would have appreciated if she did meet him. However, it all worked out for the better and Delaney redeemed himself in the end, and put together an awesome book.

5 out of 5 stars In My Life, I've Loved Them All.......2005-05-17

"...in my life, I've loved them all..." John Lennon, 1965 from "In My Life"

This sadly, movingly beautiful 1965 John Lennon classic is the song that underscores this book. Set in 1980, the year John Lennon died, the story is one of death, loss, coping and art. It seems sadly a propos that the story takes place in 1980.

The protagonist, Star (not Ringo Starr) is a Lennonphile who identifies strongly with Beatle lyrics, most especially those penned by John Lennon. The 16-year-old copes with the death of her mother and with a psychiatrist as well as bullies and a father with a love for motorcycles.

Star, per her therapist's request writes a song for her mother. In so doing, she finds a letter her mother wrote to John Lennon in 1965 (the year before she, Star was born); a guitar and an obvious love for the Beatles among her personal effects. Star has the guitar repaired and identifies with John's 1968 Beatle classic, "Julia" and solo work, "Mother," both of which are about John's mother Julia. Star takes John's maternal history to heart; she uses this as a springboard to writing the lyrics to her song. As George Harrison said in his 1976 solo work, "This Song," there is "nothing tricky about it...without you, there is no point to this song."

Star and her love for Lennon Help! her down the Long & Winding Road towards coping and acceptance. This is an exceptional work.

                      Book Description

Structuring Biological Systems focuses on the important components of biological systems in order to develop genetic algorithms for modeling purposes. The book considers the characteristics of biological systems from the artificial intelligence point of view, examines modeling examples of complex biological systems (such as molecular level modeling, a model of renal hemodynamics, and cognitive aspects of modeling), describes the entropy-based probability distribution for modeling of environmental and biological systems, and presents a detailed analysis of modeling cancer phenomena. Structuring Biologic Systems will benefit students and researchers interested in an interdisciplinary approach to complex problems of biological systems, as well as biologists, chemists, engineers, research physicians, and computer scientists.

3 out of 5 stars better than no solutions manual.......2007-05-14

this manual does not have all the answers or explanations to them. the detail is poor, and none of the conceptual questions or multiple choice have answers at all. it helps sometimes, but comes up short often.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy if looking for the even answers.......2007-03-22

My professor likes to give practice problems from the even section and he does not provide solutions, so I bought this book. One BIG problem, it does not have the even problems, so now I am in the same boat as before. Extremely upset that this is not advertised in the description. This is a college level book and it ridiculous that all the answers are not answered.

In my college physics course, I frequently found myself throwing this textbook against the wall and referring to my "Cartoon Guide to Physics" (Gonick..highly recommended). This entire book should be reduced to the summaries at the end of the chapter, for all else is useless jumble. I spend 4 hours trying to figure out the difference between a parallel and a series circuit, concluding that the best option would be a physics bonfire. Would this book conduct electric charge, where would the field lines point? I don't know, because I read this book.
